A bigger coup than Buendia: Leeds looking to sign "exceptional" £10m star

Leeds United supporters are surely still in a celebratory mood after their side brushed off any playoff final agony to lift the Championship title on a colossal 100 points.

There will be some anxiety seeping in as to how the Whites will cope with the Premier League. However, the summer transfer window is also a time for those at Elland Road to become even more excited about who could possibly don the famous Leeds white in the top division.

Daniel Farke could well be about to flex his past Norwich City connections to finally bring Emiliano Buendia into the building, with the addition of Buendia to the Whites ranks somewhat of a coup, considering his previous excellent performances for Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Why Buendia signing would be a coup

Buendia and the German used to be a match made in heaven in Norfolk, before the Argentine ace spread his wings for pastures new at Villa.

Indeed, the exciting ex-Canaries midfielder made the Championship his playground under Farke’s watchful eye, as seen in his terrific tally of 24 goals and 41 assists pulling on Norwich yellow and green.

He would initially kick on when given first-team opportunities in the West Midlands, with this goal even breaking Leeds hearts back in early 2023, but injury troubles have since hindered his chances at progressing further at Villa Park.

But, even with Buendia being missing for a hefty 56 games during the 2023/24 season due to a devastating cruciate ligament tear, he does still boast ten goals and 15 assists up a level, which will be of great use to Leeds as they carefully navigate back up.

Yet, whilst the opportunity to pick up a former £33m-rated star on loan shouldn’t be passed up on, another move would go down as a bigger coup than Buendia’s temporary signature being won if it were successfully pulled off.

Leeds could re-sign Bielsa favourite

Leeds will be aiming to leave the past in the past for the most part, especially when it comes to the sinking feeling of being relegated back down to the Championship.

But, Farke and Co. would surely be tempted by the prospect of adding Kalvin Phillips back to their roster.

Indeed, the Mail on Sunday – as has been relayed by MOT Leeds News – stated in their recent print copy that the newly promoted Whites want to bring Phillips back to his old boyhood home after his shoulder surgery at Manchester City.

It has even been further speculated that Leeds could win back their former fans’ favourite for a cut-price – valued at £10m by Transfermarkt – which would be a deal that’s hard to refuse, particularly when you remember Phillips’ heroics at Elland Road under Marcelo Bielsa saw him join Pep Guardiola’s men for a bumper £45m.

This would surely go down as a stroke of genius on Leeds’ end if Phillips were to return and get back to his previous West Yorkshire best.

Indeed, his last spell at the club resulted in many an England call-up under Gareth Southgate, alongside the 29-year-old looking assured at the daunting level, instead of now being known as a waste of City’s flashy millions.

When playing in the top-flight previously for Leeds, Phillips had shown himself to be a competent battler who was also keen at creating chances for his attacking teammates, with the table above showing off both his grit to win duels galore, but also his ability to fashion openings.

It would even lead to the 29-year-old being labelled as “exceptional” by football talent scout Antonio Mango, with nobody more desperate than Phillips himself to try and recapture these lofty heights.

Of course, this might well go down as a misfire if the beloved ex-number 23 returns and buckles under all the intense pressure.

But, on the contrary, it could well be viewed as an unbelievable coup, especially if he rolls back the years in the heart of Leeds’ midfield for far less than his steep £45m valuation.

Their new Declan Rice: Arsenal enter race to sign "generational" £80m star

There is no getting away from it: this season has been one big disappointment after another for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s side crashed out of both domestic cups, couldn’t get past Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, and are so far behind Liverpool in the Premier League that it would be hard to say they were even in a title race.

However, while this has not been a campaign to remember for the North Londoners, there have at least been a few positives, such as the form of Declan Rice.

The Englishman has been one of the team’s best players and currently has a tally of 18 goal involvements in 50 games, so fans should be excited about recent reports linking the club to someone who could be their next Rice.

Arsenal's hunt for a new midfielder

Before getting to the player in question, it’s worth reviewing some of the other midfielders linked with a move to Arsenal in recent weeks, like Martin Zubimendi and Hugo Larsson.

Transfer Focus

The former’s proposed £51m move to the Emirates actually got the ‘here we go’ treatment from Fabrizio Romano on Saturday morning, and with Spain manager Luis de la Fuente previously describing him as one of the “best central midfielders in the world,” fans should be excited.

Interestingly, Larsson would also reportedly cost just as much this summer, but as he’s still just 20 years old, his move would likely be one for the future, and if Arteta and Co want to sign an up-and-coming central midfielder, they’d be better served acting on their supposed interest in Adam Wharton.

Eintracht Frankfurt'sHugoLarssoncelebrates scoring their first goal with Ansgar Knauff and Arthur Theate

Yes, according to a recent report from Caught Offside, Arsenal are one of several sides keen on the Crystal Palace star.

Alongside the Gunners, the report revealed that Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are interested in the young Englishman.

A potential price tag is not mentioned in the story, but another report from earlier this month claimed that it would take a massive fee of around £80m to get the midfielder out of Selhurst Park this summer.

It would be an incredibly complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given Wharton’s ability and potential, it’s one worth fighting for, especially as he could be their next Rice.

Why Wharton could be Arsenal's new Rice

The first thing to say is that we aren’t claiming Wharton is on the same level as Rice at the moment, but there are enough similarities to suggest he could develop into someone just as brilliant.

One of the key similarities is their position and style of play, as, just like the Arsenal star, the young Palace ace started his career and primarily still plays in defensive midfield but is now incredibly influencing things at the sharp end of the pitch while maintaining his defensive output.

For example, FBref has placed him in the top 6% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for ball recoveries, the top 7% for progressive passes, shot-creating actions and dribblers challenged, the top 10% for crosses into the penalty area, the top 11% for expected assisted goals, the top 12% for goal-creating actions and more, all per 90.

On top of that, just like the former West Ham United captain, the young “generational talent,” as dubbed by members of the media, would be moving to the club from a fellow London-based Premier League side in Palace.

Finally, just like the Gunners’ number 41, the up-and-coming Eagles star earned his first England cap at 20 years old and under the management of Gareth Southgate.

Ultimately, while Wharton still has a lot of developing to do, he already looks like a special player, and if Arsenal have a chance to sign him, they should take it, as they may just be getting another Rice in the making.

£4m-per-year boss "emerging" as favourite for Spurs job after Iraola blow

Another frontrunner to replace Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham is now “emerging”, after news today that Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola is more likely to remain at the Vitality Stadium next season.

Tottenham dealt blow with Andoni Iraola stance revealed

As per The Telegraph and reliable journalist Mike McGrath, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has already been dealt a blow in his pursuit of a possible heir to Postecoglou, as top target Iraola is weighing more towards committing his future on the south coast.

The 42-year-old has guided Bournemouth to an unprecedented campaign where the prospect of European football is very much alive, and this subsequently attracted attention from Tottenham amid their worst ever Premier League season to date.

Spurs remain in the Europa League as Postecoglou seeks to end their 17-year wait for a major trophy, but some reports suggest that the Australian could be sacked regardless of whether he wins the competition (John Cross).

The Lilywhites are on the look-out for managerial replacements, and Iraola is believed to be Tottenham’s leading candidate for the job. However, the Spaniard is now more inclined to stay at Bournemouth for 2025/2026, with Levy looking set to be disappointed as things stand.

There are alternative names in the frame, including Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, Brentford’s Thomas Frank, Inter Milan head coach Simone Inzaghi, ex-Juve manager Thiago Motta and Fulham’s Marco Silva, who’ve all been linked in the last fortnight.

The latter, similarly to Iraola, has guided his team to unlikely contention for a European qualification spot – picking up very impressive results along the way despite working with a shoe-string budget compared to the big six.

Fabrizio Romano backs Silva as one of the most concrete names for the Spurs job, with talkSPORT’s Alex Crook sharing an update of his own this afternoon.

Marco Silva "emerging as a frontrunner" for Tottenham job

According to the reporter, Silva is now “emerging as a frontrunner” for the Tottenham job, following news of Iraola preferring to remain at Bournemouth and the Cherries hopeful they can agree a new deal.

The £4 million-per-year boss is set to be a man in demand this summer, according to Crook, and it is believed Fulham now face a battle on their hands to keep the tactician after yet another noteworthy campaign in west London.

The Whites would ideally like to tie him down with another deal, but Silva isn’t exactly rushing to agree a new contract. His current terms include an £8 million release clause, which could render Fulham powerless if Levy decides to trigger it and open talks with Silva.

The 42-year-old’s reputation is growing stronger by the year, and perhaps it is time for Spurs to grant him a big move.

“He is a master,” said Evandro, Silva’s former striker at Hull City, to Premier League Brasil. “I like to put Marco Silva on the same level as Sampaoli, because he has a management model that I also look up to. Marco Silva has an excellent way of managing the group and his greatest characteristic is being rational and not emotional.

“I believe that in this role as a coach, if you let emotions take over, things get lost easily, because in football you have to deal with fans and the press.”

DPL week 3 – Anamul Haque continues stellar form; Abahani go top of the table

Partex Sporting Club get out of relegation zone with dramatic win while Rakibul Hasan and Nahid Rana shine with the ball

Mohammad Isam27-Mar-2025

Key takeaways

Abahani Limited have taken the lead in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, as it goes into the Eid break. Abahani are now on 14 points, while Gazi Group Cricketers and Mohammedan Sporting Club are on 12 points each. With eight rounds of matches complete, Abahani have taken a significant step towards defending their title. It was a good week for Prime Bank Cricket Club and Mohammedan Sporting Club, who like Abahani won both their matches this week. Mohammedan sealed a seven-wicket win against Shinepukur Cricket Club, but their regular captain fielded for just one over and was rushed to a hospital after suffering a heart attack.

Best batters

Gazi Group’s Anamul Haque reached 500 runs in a Dhaka Premier League season for the seventh time, and became the first to cross the landmark in the 2024-25 season. He struck an unbeaten 149 against Mohammedan last week, following it up with an unbeaten 144 against Gulshan Cricket Club this week. Anamul started the season with two ducks, but now has scored at least a fifty in five of the last six innings, with his other score being 48.

Best bowlers

Left-arm spinner <Rakibul Hasan and speedster Nahid Rana took four-wicket hauls against Dhanmondi Sporting Club in Abahani’s five-wicket win in Mirpur. Due to workload management, Rana is playing only selective matches for Abahani this season, but he has made an impact. Rana has nine wickets from his four outings, while Rakibul leads the wicket-takers with 17 scalps.

Best match

Partex Sporting Club dragged themselves off the relegation zone (bottom three) in dramatic fashion, beating the high-flying Agrani Bank Cricket Club by one wicket. Their middle-order batter Mohammad Rakib was the hero, remaining unbeaten on 80 off 103 balls with five sixes and as many fours. Rakib kept his cool as four wickets fell in the last four overs. With ten runs required off the last over, Rakib first struck a boundary before getting dropped at long-on. He struck another straight boundary before No 11 Abdul Gaffar took a cheeky single off the last ball to win the game.

Points to ponder

Agrani Bank and Dhanmondi lost both their matches this week. Though Agrani Bank remains in the top six, the big-budgeted Dhanmondi slipped to No. 8 in the points table. Shinepukur and Rupganj Tigers remain at the bottom with just two points each.

Players to watch

Samiun Basir became only the third bowler in Bangladesh’s List-A history to take a five-wicket haul on debut. He took 5 for 27 playing for Legends of Rupganj against Rupganj Tigers in Mirpur. Samiun has a classic left-arm spinner’s action, and likes to float the ball to the batter. He also can spin the ball, which would be an asset going forward.

Woakes' guile and guts ignite England to seize their moment

Six wickets has been a stunning return for a player who thought his Test career could be over

Vithushan Ehantharajah08-Jul-2023The skies are “Stranger Things” dark above Headingley. The moisture in the air has combined with the beaming floodlights to create some kind of anti-batter alchemy in a pitch that has, so far, given everyone a bit of something. Now it is skewed towards the bowlers. England’s, to be precise.Fans had packed together under what little shelter there was in the concourses for the morning and afternoon rains. Some ventured onto the high street. Some even back into Leeds proper. Most had returned to the ground by the 4.45pm restart, and all were in their seats and strapped in for the evening by the time play recommenced at 5.04pm after a brief shower. Judging by the noise in the ground, not just the Western Terrace, it was clear how they passed the time. The context of England needing to beat the elements and then Australia to begin an outlandish overturning of a 2-0 scoreline crystal clear. And here was the stage, set for demonic acts. Perhaps a devilish allrounder who gives his all for the team might provide them. In he walked, chest pumped, eyes focussed, arms bristling with tat… hold on, is that Chris Woakes?Related

Woakes, Wood and Brook keep England's Ashes hopes alive

Crazy things do happen at Headingley and sometimes crazy is good

Chris Woakes and Travis Head star to leave England needing 251 to keep Ashes alive

Yep, it was. And how. In England’s most important session of the series so far, corresponding with the most crucial two hours of Woakes’ career, the 34-year-old summoned a display equal parts guile and guts to drag England towards victory in this third Test. There is still much to do, of course, but the hosts rest on Saturday night with 27 chipped off their target of 251 without loss. Where they would want to be.There have been five chases greater than 250 on this ground (insert mention of 2019) and this team under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum have managed bigger successful fourth-innings shifts on five occasions. What optimism there is of what is to come tomorrow is because of what Woakes did today. The wickets of first-innings centurion Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey opened up the tail, both undone with surprise bounce off the surface. Marsh gloved through to Jonny Bairstow just as it looked like he was accessing his day one form, before, and not for the first time this week, Carey’s glove took out the stumps at the striker’s end.All that came during a nine-over spell largely out of necessity. Neither Stokes nor Ollie Robinson were able to bowl, and despite Moeen Ali’s prudence on Friday evening, turning to spin would have been a risk and a waste given runs needed to be capped and the clouds still reigned up above. The wane at the end was understandable, as he found himself in the firing line of Travis Head’s one-man army with 17 taken from his final two overs.Tagged on to his first innings 3 for 73 from 17 overs, it has been a remarkable return to action for a player who thought he might never don Test whites again. The entirety of the 2022 summer was missed with a knee injury that eventually required surgery. He only returned to red ball action this summer with three County Championship matches for Warwickshire, sending down 76 overs. The last of those came against Hampshire on May 7, and yet he has been able to summon the accuracy and nibble of old. This, by the way, was his first Test at home since September 2021. The consistent pace, the fact he swung the ball more than any bowler in the match so far, was a testament to his skills given the gap and the injury.Chris Woakes has had an outstanding return to the Test side•Getty ImagesMaybe that should not come as a surprise. Woakes has a steel masked far too well by a geniality that constantly has him ranked as “the nicest man in English cricket”. Even if you did not know him, there’s a good chance if you called him up to ask for a lift to the airport, he’d oblige and probably offer to water your plants while you’re away. Even the end he bowled from today – running in with the Rugby Ground behind him – was seemingly out of politeness to Mark Wood, who had gravity on his side from the Pavilion End, dismissing Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins with searing pace.”It’s not actually an end I particularly like having bowled quite a bit here for Warwickshire and England,” Woakes said. “I much prefer to come down the hill, but I found a bit of rhythm from that end and actually it makes you snap into the wicket a little bit harder, whereas coming down the hill you can kind of go with it a bit.”The “good guy” tag undersells the spirit and commitment to England across all formats. It’s worth noting that following last summer’s surgery, he went and won the T20 World Cup, becoming a dual World Champion in the process.Woakes seems to suffer from the drawbacks of “Good Blokeism” rather than its benefits of nepotism and longer grace periods. It has seen him exist largely in this unfortunate limbo as a Test cricketer; one who is both easy to drop and easy to chuck a hospital pass.Only nine of his previous 45 caps have come in a row, back in 2016, partly because Stokes only made two Test appearances that summer. The last of Woakes’ Test appearances, in March 2022, looked like being the end of him. Broken after a draining Ashes series, he was sent to the Caribbean to operate as the leader of the attack after James Anderson and Stuart Broad were dropped. After a month of lifeless pitches, he returned more broken than before.Of the wickets taken in this match, not a bunny among them in Marnus Labuschagne, Marsh twice, Head and Khawaja, it was the first on the list that elicited the biggest reaction from a usually measured individual.”It’s just emotions, isn’t it?” said Woakes, almost apologetically. “The emotion of a Test match and with it being an Ashes Test match. Being on the sidelines watching for the last few weeks. And then getting the call, it shows that backing from the coach and the captain and a little bit of a relief that you’ve been able to get a big scalp like Marnus and put your faith in the decision to play.”Also the gap in the fact I haven’t played in front of a crowd in England for a couple of years. You realise when you hear that roar it brings out that emotion in you which is easy to kind of forget how good it is when you haven’t played for a while.”Saturday ticked Woakes over to 100 wickets in England, which feels significant given the conversation throughout his career is his ineffectiveness overseas. Especially in Australia, where he has a bowling average of 51.68 and batting average of 20.00. At this stage of his career, it is something he will have to stomach. The broader away bowling average of 51.88 and 21.90 with the bat, along with the perception of him as an allrounder are too far gone. And yet here he is, answering a mayday call from a captain who happens to be the greatest allrounder English cricket has produced, to help his country in their hour of need as the Ashes threaten to slip away. The players rate Woakes as high as anyone and, while he may have a part to play with the bat on day four, even the brief amount of play on day three underlined that to everyone else.

How many batters have survived two hat-trick balls in the same Test innings?

And which batter has the highest Test score away from home?

Steven Lynch17-Aug-2021Joe Root twice survived hat-trick balls during his unbeaten 180 in the Lord’s Test. Has anyone else managed this? asked James Hampshire from England

Joe Root entered on a hat-trick in the second Test against India at Lord’s, after Mohammed Siraj dismissed Dom Sibley and Haseeb Hameed with successive balls in the 15th over of England’s first innings, and later faced up to Ishant Sharma’s next ball after he’d removed Moeen Ali and Sam Curran in his previous over (the 111th).The only other man known to have to faced two hat-trick balls in the same Test innings is Mohammad Ashraful, during Bangladesh’s match against India in Dhaka in 2004, when he thwarted Irfan Pathan on two separate occasions during a defiant 60 not out.In Bridgetown earlier in 2004, Brian Lara did something very similar. In the 17th over of West Indies’ second innings against England, he survived a hat-trick ball from Andrew Flintoff, although the wickets had actually fallen in the first innings. Not long afterwards Matthew Hoggard really did take a hat-trick, with the last three balls of the 21st over. Lara faced his next delivery – the first one of the 23rd – and prevented Hoggard taking four wickets in four balls, which some people call a double hat-trick. (Thanks to Charles Davis for his help with this one.)Was India’s tail in the Lord’s Test, with the four fast bowlers at Nos. 8-11, the worst in Test history? asked Ivan Sowry from New Zealand

This is very difficult to work out, as there are some Test sides – notably in a country’s early matches – where Nos. 8-11 have very few runs. India’s late order at Lord’s did look pretty flimsy on paper, with Mohammed Shami (Test average 11) at No. 8 in the first innings – although it must be said that Shami and the others made a nonsense of this in the second. But I also remember an England team, against New Zealand at The Oval in 1999, which had the worst tail anyone could remember – Andy Caddick (final Test average 10.37) at No. 8, followed by genuine No. 11s Alan Mullally (5.52), Phil Tufnell (5.09) and Ed Giddins (2.50).Shiva Jayaraman, one of the hard-pressed ESPNcricinfo stats team, crunched a few numbers for recent first-class cricket, although he did warn that lack of detailed data for first-class matches meant he couldn’t go back very far. But he did manage to come up with a statistically worse last four than India’s at Lord’s. Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Siraj had 2476 first-class runs between them before the game, at an average of 9.30: Pakistan’s last four in their Test against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi in December 2019 – Usman Shinwari, Mohammad Abbas, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah – had previously amassed 1043 first-class runs at an average of just 8.34.Some earlier games might well beat this: for example, none of South Africa’s team in their inaugural Test, against England in Port Elizabeth in 1888-89, had ever played a first-class match before.Don Bradman scored 6996 runs in Tests and was run out only once. But which player scored the most Test runs without ever being run out? asked Jamie Stewart from Australia

The man who made the most runs in Tests without ever being caught short of his crease is the great Indian allrounder Kapil Dev, with 5248: he was never run out in 184 Test innings, another record. Next comes the former England captain Peter May, who was never run out while compiling 4537 runs in Tests. The current South African opener Dean Elgar is not far behind – he’s so far made 4347 runs without being run out. You’re right that Don Bradman was run out only once in his 80 Test innings – against England in Adelaide in 1928-29, beaten by a return to the wicketkeeper from the covers. The fielder was 46-year-old Jack Hobbs. Two batters have scored more Test runs than Bradman while being run out only once: Alastair Cook made 12,472 in 291 innings, and Chris Gayle 7215 in 182.Hanif Mohammad’s 337 against West Indies in Bridgetown remains the highest Test score by a batter away•PA Photos Which batter has the highest score away from home – I know Sachin Tendulkar made his highest score in Bangladesh? asked Venkata Praveen Puvadi from the United States

The highest score of Sachin Tendulkar’s illustrious Test career was 248 not out, against Bangladesh in Dhaka in 2004-05. But there are a number of higher scores by batters in away Tests: biggest of all was Hanif Mohammad’s epic 337, in more than 16 hours, for Pakistan against West Indies in Bridgetown in 1957-58.Don Bradman made two triple-centuries away from home, both at Headingley – 334 in 1930, and 304 in 1934. Eight other batters have completed Test triple-centuries outside their own country. This excludes performances in Tests at neutral venues, mainly Pakistan’s matches in the UAE. Azhar Ali made 302 not out in a day-night match against West Indies in Dubai in 2016-17, while AB de Villiers hit an unbeaten 278 for South Africa vs Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in 2010-11.Is it true that Lord’s has hosted more Tests than any other ground in the world? And which grounds hold the corresponding records for one-day and Twenty20 internationals? asked Sunit Kumar from Sri Lanka

The just concluded match between England and India was the 141st Test to be played at Lord’s since the first one there in 1884. That is indeed the record: three other grounds have staged more than 100. The Melbourne Cricket Ground has so far held 113 Tests, Sydney 109, and The Oval 102.Lord’s is, however, well down the list when it comes to one-day internationals: there have been 67, fewer than 13 other grounds worldwide, including The Oval (74). Right at the top of the list is the Sharjah CA Stadium, which has staged no fewer than 240 ODIs. Sydney comes next with 159, then Harare with 154 and Melbourne 149.The UAE also leads the way when it comes to T20Is, although this time it’s the Dubai International Stadium that is top, having staged 62. Next come Mirpur with 49 and Abu Dhabi with 48.Use our feedback form, or the Ask Steven Facebook page to ask your stats and trivia questions

Twins Owners Release Statement Announcing Team is No Longer for Sale

On Wednesday, the Pohlad family announced a shocking reversal of course regarding the sale of the Twins.

In a statement, the Pohlads revealed they would no longer be pursuing a sale of the franchise and instead will retain ownership of the Twins while adding two "significant limited partnership groups." The ownership group had spent the last year looking into selling the franchise.

"For more than four decades, our family has had the privilege of owning the Minnesota Twins," the statement read. "This franchise has become part of our family story, as it has for our employees, our players, this community, and Twins fans everywhere.

"Over the past several months, we explored a wide range of potential investment and ownership opportunities. Our focus throughout has been on what's best for the long-term future of the Twins. We have been fully open to all possibilities.

"After a detailed and robust process, our family will remain the principal owner of the Minnesota Twins. To strengthen the club in a rapidly evolving sports landscape – one that demands strong partnerships, fresh ideas, and long-term vision – we are in the process of adding two significant limited partnership groups, each of whom will bring a wealth of experience and share our family values.

"We see and hear the passion from our partners, the community, and Twins fans. This ownership group is committed to building a winning team and culture for this region, one that Twins fans are proud to cheer for."

Back in March reported the Pohlads were seeking a sale price of at least $1.7 billion and that the team had accrued over $425 million in debt, which may have complicated a possible sale.

The Pohlads now embark upon their promised quest of building a "winning team and culture" in Minnesota, which has proven difficult during their 40-plus year stewardship. It will be even more difficult going forward after the Twins underwent a dramatic firesale at the MLB trade deadline and shipped off most of the top talent on the roster, headlined by Jhoan Duran and Carlos Correa.

Zawad Abrar missed out on a hundred•CREIMAS/ACC

With just 48 more runs to get in 45 balls, eight wickets standing, and two set batters at the crease, Bangladesh Under-19s looked set to beat Afghanistan Under-19s rather comfortably in their 284 chase. Although they scored 28 runs in the next four overs, these came at the cost of four wickets. At that stage, Afghanistan sniffed a comeback win.Earlier in the innings, the Bangladesh openers Zawad Abrar and Rifat Beg had added 151, while captain Azizul Hakim and Kalam Siddiki stitched together a partnership of 66 for the third wicket.Roohullah Arab got the first breakthrough for Afghanistan, when he dismissed Beg for 62 to end the first-wicket stand in the 27th over. Arab also took Abrar’s wicket in the 31st – the batter missed out on a hundred, falling for 96. Although Hakim and Siddiki looked like they were going to make it a one-sided affair, a middle-order collapse threatened to take the win away from Bangladesh. Eventually, though, Rizan Hossan’s speedy 17* ensured Bangladesh scraped through in the 49th over with three wickets remaining.Afghanistan had centurion Faisal Shinozada (103) to thank for putting up a big total. Shinozada put up stands of 66 and 89 for the second and third wicket with Osman Sadat and Uzairullah Niazai, respectively.
