Leeds eyeing fresh 2026 move to sign "perfect" Championship star for Farke

After getting off to a solid start in the Premier League, newly-promoted Leeds United have reportedly set their sights on signing a Championship star for Daniel Farke.

Where Leeds should prioritise in 2026

Whilst it has been a solid start, there’s still plenty of work for Leeds to do if they want to maintain their Premier League status at the first time of asking, and the January transfer window will play a major part in that.

Having missed out on a number of top targets in the summer, the Whites would be wise to make up for lost time and add the finishing touches to Farke’s squad when the winter window opens.

Who arrives, if any, will be the big question.

Reports have namedropped the likes of Jens Petter Hauge in the last week, and there’s no doubt that the Bodo/Glimt winger would be an interesting addition.

Revealing the news, transfer reporter Graeme Bailey told Leeds United News that those at Elland Road have set their sights on signing the 20-year-old.

If any reinforcements are to arrive, then it’s likely Farke’s attack receives a much-needed boost.

The German made his desire for attacking talent no secret in the summer, but watched on as Leeds failed to get his top targets over the line.

Although Leeds will not be expected to break their transfer record in January, they should look to add some decisive arrivals in pursuit of safety, before splashing the cash in the summer.

By securing their Premier League place for a second-consecutive campaign, they’d put themselves in a strong position to finally welcome an attacking midfielder that they’ve been chasing.

Leeds now eyeing 2026 Gustavo Hamer move

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Leeds are eyeing a summer move to sign Gustavo Hamer from Sheffield United, with a January deal unlikely as things stand.

Having been interested in the Sheffield United star in the summer, Leeds could finally get their man one year on.

If the Blades fail to earn promotion to the top flight, then keeping hold of a player as talented as Hamer would prove to be even tougher, especially if Leeds look to take advantage of the fact that he shares an agent with Wilfried Gnonto.

Praised as “perfect” by Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder for how he handled transfer speculation in the past, it will be interesting to see just how much Hamer pushes for an exit if his side continue to struggle in the Championship and Leeds come calling again.

The 28-year-old has been a mainstay of Wilder’s midfield, starting nearly every second tier game for them so far, and he was equally imperative last season.

Hamer bagged an incredible 18 goal contributions in 44 Championship appearances in 24/25, playing a key role as the Blades only just missed out on Premier League promotion, courtesy of a play-off final loss to Sunderland at Wembley.

Newcastle star who looks like "the stuff of nightmares" is on borrowed time

Newcastle United’s season has been a tale of mixed fortunes.

There had been questions over their attack in the opening weeks, with the team struggling to find fluency in front of goal.

They entered Sunday’s home fixture with one of the lowest expected goals tallies in the Premier League, a worrying sign for a side competing on multiple fronts this campaign.

Yet there have been positive signs of improvement. A 4-0 win against Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise in midweek and a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the weekend offered encouragement.

Across those two games, Newcastle scored six and conceded none, showcasing both attacking progress and defensive resilience.

Their defensive record, in particular, has been outstanding.

The clean sheet against Forest was their sixth of the season, built on the formidable partnership of Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman.

Botman, finally free from the injuries that plagued him over the last 18 months, looks back to his dominant best.

With such a strong foundation at the back, Eddie Howe’s side have not had to rely on prolific attacking displays to keep pace in the league and Europe.

But injuries have caused problems. Both starting full-backs, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall, are set for extended layoffs, and that has forced Howe into reshuffling his defence.

Dan Burn, a natural centre-back, has been deputising at left-back, and while his height and physicality bring certain advantages, the role exposes his weaknesses.

How Newcastle defeated Nottingham Forest

Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest was convincing in the scoreline, but the performance showed areas that still need work.

Offensively, Howe’s men created plenty. They registered an xG of 3.28 – their highest in a single Premier League game this season – and fashioned six big chances, firing 18 shots.

Bruno Guimarães was exceptional, dictating the game and earning a 9.4 match rating, via Sofascore.

His curling strike in the 58th minute opened the scoring while he then won a penalty after being fouled. Man of the moment, new mega-money striker, Nick Woltemade confidently dispatched the resulting spot kick to seal all three points.

Defensively, Newcastle looked solid throughout. Forest mustered only five shots, four on target, but none that truly tested Nick Pope.

The only real scare came from former Magpies Chris Wood in the second half, though it was ruled offside.

For a side that has kept six clean sheets already, this was another example of their defensive discipline shining through.

Yet it wasn’t all perfect. While the centre-backs were imperious and Guimarães orchestrated midfield, the flanks were less convincing.

Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga both struggled to stamp their authority in wide areas, and Burn’s positioning at left-back behind Gordon became a notable concern.

Dan Burn's struggles against Nottingham Forest

Dan Burn has been described by one content creator as “the stuff of nightmares” at left-back.

Against Forest, that description rang true again.

Despite Newcastle controlling much of the game, Burn’s vulnerability in one-on-one situations was visible and will surely be noted by future opponents.

Statistically, Burn’s outing summed up the dilemma.

He registered a 6.9 match rating according to Sofascore, produced one assist, and made two clearances, one interception, and one tackle. But he was also dribbled past twice, highlighting his discomfort against quicker, more agile opponents.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

While his aerial dominance and strength are assets, at full-back, he is often exposed for pace and movement in behind.

This isn’t an isolated issue. In midweek, Union Saint-Gilloise repeatedly targeted Burn’s side in the Champions League, recognising it as a potential weakness.

More dangerous Premier League opponents than Forest are likely to do the same.

Newcastle’s next fixture away at Brighton could prove especially difficult, with Yankuba Minteh expected to test Burn’s defensive ability down the wing.

Burn’s situation is complicated by his England call-up, where he will likely feature as a centre-back.

While that suits his natural game, it denies him the opportunity to gain more rhythm at left-back, a role Newcastle increasingly need him to adapt to.

The positional adjustment could even influence the way Howe sets his team up, as Burn’s lack of mobility on the flank can alter Newcastle’s pressing and transition play.

The debate is already growing among fans about whether Newcastle should look into the free-agent market for a temporary left-back solution until Hall returns.

Burn has been a dependable servant and remains a strong squad option, but in this role, he is certainly on borrowed time in the starting lineup.

As Howe looks ahead to a congested autumn schedule, managing this weakness could be as important as Newcastle’s improving attacking play.

While the defence remains one of the most reliable in the league, the left-back situation is one clear that rivals will aim to exploit.

Better signing than Hato: Chelsea targeting move for "sensational" £40m ace

To say it’s been a busy summer for Chelsea this year would be quite the understatement.

While most of the Premier League were enjoying a break, Enzo Maresca’s side were competing in and winning the Club World Cup.

It was just as busy off the pitch for the Blues, as the board sold several players like Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga, while also bringing in stars like Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens.

Chelsea forward Joao Pedro

Moreover, with just over a month of the window remaining, the West Londoners look set to do more business, with Jorrel Hato the latest player set to join the club, and if reports are to be believed, they could also bring in another international ace who’d be an even better signing.

Chelsea target better signing than Hato

At the moment, it looks like Chelsea are getting close to signing RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, but the player closest to making the move to Stamford Bridge is undoubtedly Jorrel Hato.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In fact, the Dutchman’s move to the club received the “here we go” treatment from transfers expert Fabrizio Romano yesterday afternoon, who revealed the fee is set to be in excess of €40m, which is about £35m.

There is no denying that in signing the highly-rated 19-year-old, the Blues have improved their defence for the present and future, but it also appears as if they are interested in another star who’d be an even better signing.

At least that is according to a recent report from BBC Sport, which has reaffirmed Chelsea’s interest in Marc Guehi.

The report claims that alongside the likes of Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, the Blues have registered an interest in the Crystal Palace star since the end of the season.

In terms of how much the England international would cost, the story states that the Eagles want around £40m, which could prove to be great value, especially as he would likely be a better signing than Hato.

Why Guehi would be a better signing than Hato

Okay, so the first thing to say is that, like plenty of others, we do feel confident that Hato will be a great addition to Chelsea’s squad this summer, as he’s young, highly promising and already has an impressive amount of experience under his belt.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehi

However, there are still a few reasons why we think that this summer, Guehi would end up being the better acquisition.

The primary one actually relates to experience, as while the Ajax gem has an impressive tally of 111 senior club appearances under his belt, the Palace star dwarfs that with a whopping 216 across his stints with the Eagles, Swansea and Chelsea.

Moreover, you have to take into account the competition in which most of those appearances were made, as according to Opta Analyst, the Premier League is comfortably the toughest in world football.

In contrast, the Eredivisie comes in as just the tenth toughest, behind the likes of Brazil’s Serie A and Portugal’s Primeira Liga.

On top of the simple fact that this means the Englishman has been playing far more challenging games, it also means he should be able to adapt to playing for the West Londoners quicker, as he does not have to change leagues or take a step-up.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehiin action

Then, while the fact that the 19-year-old has already won six senior caps for the Netherlands is certainly promising, it once again pales in comparison to the 23 won by the former Blues gem, especially when you consider he played a key role in the Three Lions’ run to the final of the European Championship last year.

Finally, while it’s good to invest in promising young players, Maresca and Co need signings who can help them win things over the next couple of seasons.

So, it’s crucial that, at 25 years old, the “sensational” Palace ace, as dubbed by Steve Parish, is just two years from reaching his peak, whereas it could be another seven years until the Rotterdam-born ace hits his, according to research carried out by The Athletic.

Ultimately, Hato is a great signing, but due to having more quality experience and being closer to his peak years, Guehi would likely be a better signing for Chelsea this season.

Frank's own Xavi Simons: Spurs hugely keen on signing "magic" £50m star

Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to make headway in the Premier League and Champions League next season, all the while challenging for further silverware in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

They’ve got a taste for that winning feeling, you see, and while Ange Postecoglou was sacked in June, we left with his head held high, a hero, the manager who came and conquered after so many were thwarted before him.

In Thomas Frank, though, Spurs have the perfect successor, bringing structured organisation and dynamic balance, but also a pragmatism that was lacking under Ange’s wing.

While Mohammed Kudus has already been reeled in, Tottenham are hoping to sign another creative midfielder, with several names lined up.

Spurs sounding out attacking midfielders

Only one week ago, it looked as if Tottenham were on the cusp of signing Morgan Gibbs-White. But Nottingham Forest allege the Lilywhites made an unlawful approach.

While work is being done to get that one over the line, Tottenham have since set up contingencies, with RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons the centre of talks between the outfits, though Arsenal and Chelsea are also interested.

Elsewhere, transfer insider Graeme Bailey has revealed that Tottenham are hugely keen on striking a deal for Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey, 24, who is expected to be on the move this summer.

Aston Villa's Jacob Ramsey

Newcastle United and Forest are also keen on a deal, with Villa reported to have set a price of £50m for their homegrown midfielder.

Why Spurs want Jacob Ramsey

Last summer, Tottenham explored a player-plus-cash move for Ramsey, with Giovani Lo Celso heading the other way. That never came to fruition.

At 24, Ramsey is entering the prime years of his career, but having made 167 appearances for Aston Villa, his boyhood club, he’s struggling for purchase in Unai Emery’s plans.

At his best, Ramsey is lively and slippery and exciting. Statman Dave once noted his “magic” technical qualities, and that sense of wonder could lead him right to a new chapter down N17, buoyed by the knowledge that Tottenham’s vested interest winds right the way back through the previous campaign and into the 2024 summer window.

If Frank succeeds in unlocking those powers, he might have a cut-price alternative to the likes of Simons on his hands, who may yet restore his finest form, perhaps expand it to something not yet witnessed.

The diminutive Dutchman has scored 21 goals and supplied 23 assists across 71 matches for Leipzig, with talent scout Jacek Kulig even suggesting that the playmaker is “destined for greatness”.

After a couple of frustrating seasons in the Premier League, Ramsey doesn’t have the same hype around this name, but there’s little question that he has what it takes to level back up; the dynamic midfielder, after all, ranked among the top 2% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues last season for pass completion, as per FBref.

He’s shown before an aptitude for clinical performances, and that could swell larger in a new project at Tottenham, with Frank’s tactical prowess sure to take his development to the next level.

Ramsey might not have the reputation or accomplishments of Simons, but he’s got so much more to give and could prove a shrewd signing indeed, as well as playing in similar positions to the Dutchman, either as an attacking midfielder or on the flanks, drifting into central positions.

Kent enjoy better of curtailed day as Vince holds Hampshire together

Kent reduced Hampshire to 213 for 7 at stumps on a weather-affected first day in the Vitality County Championship at Canterbury.Matt Parkinson took 3 for 31 and George Garrett 3 for 60 as the hosts exploited the conditions at the Spitfire Ground. James Vince hit 88 for the visitors, but their next highest scorer was Liam Dawson, who made 31.No play was possible before lunch, but when Kent won the toss a home supporter was moved to say: “If we can’t bowl a side out in these conditions, we never will.” And while the bar is admittedly low, this was as good a day as the division’s basement side have enjoyed at the St Lawrence in red-ball cricket all season. It was damp, overcast and blustery and Fletcha Midleton was soon bowled by Garrett for 8, playing the wrong line. Joey Evison then removed Toby Albert with his second ball for 11, playing on, before Nick Gubbins joined Vince. They put on 83 for the third wicket before Gubbins was caught behind off Garrett for 24.When the light deteriorated, tea was taken at 3.10pm, with Hampshire on 135 for 3. Conditions improved significantly after the restart but Ben Brown tried to hook Garrett and was caught by Evison for 9.Vince was on 77 when he pulled Evison to midwicket and although Joe Denly couldn’t take the catch, the former England man atoned with a brilliant diving one-handed grab when Vince tried to drive Parkinson through cover.Parkinson then got Liam Dawson for 31, caught by Charlie Stobo at second slip, but Harry Finch missed a chance to stump James Fuller when he was on 1, but he’d only added six more when Finch took his chance at redemption, grabbing a violently turning ball from Parkinson. With darkness encroaching once again, play was eventually abandoned for the day at 5.47 pm, with 11 overs remaining.

Tottenham ready to pay asking price for £100k-p/w star, he wants the move

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will be desperate to ensure that his decision to sack Ange Postecoglou won’t come back to bite him, and he’s apparently prepared to back new manager Thomas Frank so he can give the Australian’s replacement the best-possible chance of success.

Postecoglou ended the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy by guiding them to an historic Europa League final victory over Man United last month, a result which also gifted them a spot in the Champions League next season, but Spurs’ torrid 2024/2025 domestic form meant that Levy was forced into the tough call of letting him go.

Frank is now tasked with re-settling the dressing room whilst helping Spurs to kick on from their memorable night in Bilbao, and the Dane has already paid homage to his predecessor’s work at N17.

“I think Ange has done something special. He’ll forever be a legend in Tottenham,” Frank said in his first interview as Tottenham boss.

“It’s important to understand we all stand on the shoulders of others. I’m going in on the foundation Ange built, and his coaching staff, and I’m very humble about that. I’ll do my very best to continue the great work he put in.

“The feeling, the excitement, the joy and the happiness in the fans’ faces, the pictures were ‘wow’. Hopefully, we can create more of those moments. That will be the ultimate dream: to do that and build on that.”

The 51-year-old is reportedly keen to upgrade his new ranks by signing a proven wide-attacking player, especially considering Son Heung-min may have already played his last competitive game for Tottenham amid interest from Saudi Arabia.

Many high-profile Premier League names have been linked already, but chief among them is Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze.

The England international guided Palace to their first ever major trophy last season, bagging the winner in a 1-0 victory over Man City in the FA Cup final, adding to his impressive tally of 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.

Eze has been a star player at Selhurst Park ever since his move there from QPR, and Eagles chairman Steve Parish was left “astounded” by the lack of interest in him last summer.

Tottenham ready to pay £68 million for Eberechi Eze

The £100,000-per-week forward, who can play both as a CAM and out wide, has certainly got admirers this time round, and Spurs are one of the chief contenders for his signature.

Reports have suggested that Frank has personally recommended Eze as a target for Tottenham, with TEAMtalk now sharing an update on the situation amid rumours that the player would also be keen on a north London move.

The outlet states that Tottenham are ready to meet the price required to sign Eze, his £68 million release clause, and the ex-Arsenal academy man is “enthusiastic” about swapping south London for a place in Frank’s side.

Frank also apparently believes that Eze would be a stellar addition for the Lilywhites, and one capable of thriving both on the wing and as a complement to James Maddison in the centre of attacking midfield.

Palace are also open to receiving Eze’s final fee in installments, even if they’d want an upfront payment of £45 million, something which Tottenham are prepared to offer as well.

This could be one to watch in the coming days/weeks, as Spurs want to act “swiftly” and provide Frank with fresh additions ahead of a crucial campaign.
