EFC fans want to sign Longstaff

Everton fans want to sign Sean Longstaff after they were linked with a move to capture the Newcastle United midfielder in January.

The Toffees have started the Premier League season well. As it stands, the Merseyside outfit are fifth in the Premier League with 14 points, just two behind leaders Chelsea (Sky Sports). Rafael Benitez has had a positive impact on the club since replacing Carlo Ancelotti, who returned to Real Madrid in the summer.

The arrivals of Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend have helped Everton rise up the table, and now it seems Benitez could dip into the market once more. According to The Independent, the Toffees are looking to sign Longstaff from Newcastle, where the midfielder previously played under Benitez.

The news has been doing the rounds of Twitter, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on the £13.5m-rated ace (Transfermarkt).

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Longstaff links below

“That’s it mate. It’s no good having players like Gomes or Davies as backups to the current two as they are both completely different players. Signing players who are similar mould e.g Longstaff makes a lot of sense.”

“Just the fact he would be on half of them others mentioned in wages makes it worthy. Oh and he can run a bit, that’s two plusses.”

“Yeah works with me As you said if you get rid of Delph and get Longstaff in for next to nothing who will be on less money, it’s a squad upgrade.”

“Sean Longstaff’s contract is set to expire in the summer. Everton should get in his ear about offering a contract in January. Get him on a free or take him off Newcastle for less than £5mil. Would be decent cheap depth for Rafa”

“Looked into Allan & Longstaff stats compared this season. Certain area pressures & some passing stats Allan slightly on top. Overall Longstaff is outperforming Allan. Understand why Everton want 23yr old on free transfer who performing at level of first team midfielder”

Exclusive: Spurs legend makes surprising transfer claim

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Graham Roberts insists he is not against the club making a move to re-sign Fernando Llorente on a free transfer.

Spurs enjoyed an aggressive summer of recruitment as they looked to refresh the squad of Nuno Espirito Santo.

Spurs have brought in five new players, with Bryan Gil, Emerson Royal, Pape Sarr, Pierluigi Gollini and Cristian Romero all coming in, though Sarr was loaned back to French club Metz for the remainder of the season. Spurs also shipped out Juan Foyth, Toby Alderweireld, Moussa Sissoko, Joe Hart, Danny Rose, Erik Lamela, Paulo Gazzaniga and Serge Aurier.

However, the club did not manage to bring a new striker into the club to provide support for Harry Kane.

Llorente, of course, is a former Spurs star, playing for the club between 2017 and 2019 and playing a key role in their run to the Champions League final, scoring the winning goal in the quarter-final against Manchester City and assisting Lucas Moura’s third goal in the remarkable semi-final against Ajax.

Llorente has left Udinese on a free transfer and remains without a club, and Roberts says he would be open to the potential of him returning in the summer.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “He could do. He’s been around, he knows what the club’s about.”

Rangers told why Goldson will leave

Gabriel Agbonlahor has offered his thoughts on Rangers defender Connor Goldson’s future…

What’s the talk?

Former Premier League forward Gabriel Agbonlahor has claimed that Connor Goldson may leave Rangers in order to earn £50k-per-week in the Premier League.

West Ham are reportedly keen on the defender, who is out of contract next summer, and Agbonlahor believes that wages hold the key to his future.

He told Football Insider:

“I don’t know what Rangers are offering him but maybe Rangers can’t pay very well.

“These players, when they’re doing well, they’re going to try and maximise their earnings. They will hear about the crazy money flying about in the Premier League.

“That’s why Odsonne Edouard left Celtic, that’s why Ryan Christie left for Bournemouth because they will offer more money than Celtic.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if Goldson and his agents are looking at it and thinking ‘Maybe Rangers can pay £20,000-£30,000-a-week, but maybe we can get £50,000-a-week in the Premier League’. You can’t really blame the player. At his age, it could be his last big deal so he’s got to maximise his earnings.”

Get it done

Ross Wilson must sanction offering the type of big contract offer that Goldson could get in the Premier League in order to keep him at the club. He is reportedly on £27k-per-week at the moment and a big boost to his pay packet could persuade him to put pen to paper and commit his long-term future to the Gers.

It would be a disaster for Rangers if they watch one of their key performers leave the club for nothing next summer because they refused to match what the likes of West Ham could potentially offer him. Losing Goldson on a free transfer would be a bitter blow for the fans to take, given how important he has been in recent seasons.

Gerrard once hailed the ex-Brighton man as a mountain for the club, praising his on and off the pitch leadership. He told The Scotsman: “Connor has been an absolute mountain for this team, a warrior.

“I can’t describe to you how well he has done for this team, not just in terms of what you have seen on the pitch but also his leadership on the inside of the club and his availability every single day.”

This shows how highly Gerrard rates him behind the scenes and his statistics on the pitch back up his overall impact on the side. He started 38 Premiership matches last season and Rangers accrued an incredible 26 clean sheets in that time, with Goldson averaging a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.39.

Therefore, Wilson must avoid a disaster by offering Goldson a bumper new deal before the January transfer window. Keeping him would be a major boost to the club, given what he was able to achieve last year.

Aston Villa’s Matt Target was awful vs Watford

Aston Villa suffered a shocking start to the new Premier League season, going down 3-2 to Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon.

Dean Smith’s side have had a rollercoaster few weeks in the summer transfer window, waving goodbye to talisman Jack Grealish and welcoming a number of new signings, a few of whom started against the Hornets.

While the new boys didn’t impress, it was one longer-serving player who had a particularly awful game – Matt Targett.

The left-back certainly wasn’t helped by Ashley Young seemingly allergic to doing his defensive duties and tracking back, but Watford’s Ismaila Sarr took him to the cleaners with his combination of pace and trickery.

As per Sofascore, the English ace lost all five duels in which he was involved and made no tackles or interceptions whatsoever. He also lost the ball on eight separate occasions and couldn’t find his passing radar either, completing just 79% of his passes.

Such were his struggles that Smith actually decided to take him off at half-time and spare his blushes, but some journalists didn’t spare the 25-year-old in their assessments of the match.

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece claimed that Targett was “all over the shop” as Emmanuel Dennis opened the scoring for the home side, with the left-back’s nemesis on the day Sarr playing a big part for the goal.

Writing on Twitter, The Athletic’s Gregg Evans said: “Feeling a little bit for Matt Targett here. 14 mins in and Sarr is causing him all sorts of problems. Hard to watch. #WatfordFC #AVFC.”

All in all, it was a difficult afternoon for the left-back, who looked completely off the pace like the rest of his teammates and was left embarrassed by a winger in Sarr who is at the top of his game.

From being considered Villa’s most improved player last season by some fans, to putting in a shocking performance like the one on Saturday afternoon, Targett’s season couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start.

The Villa defender badly let his manager down today with a woeful display at Vicarage Road.

Meanwhile, this Villa star could leave the club…

Pundit gives verdict on Wilson’s potential NUFC goal target

Former Newcastle United player Steve Howey believes Callum Wilson will set a goal target of around 15 this season.

Wilson put pen-to-paper on a four-year deal with Newcastle in September 2020, which will keep him at St James’ Park until the summer of 2024.

The 29-year-old has scored 104 goals throughout his career and has provided a further 44 assists for his teammates. So far for the Magpies, Wilson has scored 13 goals and provided five assists, including an opening day goal against West Ham two weeks ago.

Last term, Wilson netted 12 goals in the Premier League, but Howey reckons he will be aiming for around the 15 mark this campaign, exclusively telling Football FanCast: “I think it will be around the 15 mark, I think he’d look to think that looking at anything else would be a very, very good season.”

Newcastle finished last season in 12th place in the Premier League, winning three of their last five matches. Wilson was the leading goal scorer in his debut campaign at St. James’ Park and will need to avoid a repeat of the injury problems he suffered last term if he is to improve on his tally of 12 goals in 2020/2021.

Liverpool fans fume at transfer update

Some Liverpool supporters have been left fuming after a fresh update emerged regarding the Reds’ potential spending this summer.

Jurgen Klopp has only signed Ibrahima Konate since the end of last season, with the club’s transfer business low-key until this point.

Gini Wijnaldum’s exit has arguably heightened the need to bring in a new central midfielder, while another attacking player could also ideally be recruited.

There has been some frustration surrounding Liverpool’s lack of signings, especially with Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United all spending big.

A fresh update may not bring too much happiness to Reds fans, with the Liverpool Echo claiming [via Anfield Watch on Twitter] that new arrivals won’t come in until both Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi are sold.

Pundit Liam Delap move to West Brom would suit all parties

Carlton Palmer reckons that West Brom signing Manchester City youngster Liam Delap is a move that would suit all parties.

The teenager, son of former long throw specialist Rory Delap, has made three first-team outings for City, but has caught the eye of most of the Championship following his exhilarating form in Premier League 2.

Delap, who netted on his senior debut in the EFL Cup for Pep Guardiola’s men, struck 24 times in 20 appearances for City’s Under-23s last term, including three hat-tricks and four braces.

And according to The Express and Star, West Brom are the latest second-tier outfit to register their interest in the 18-year-old, even though he’s currently injured and hasn’t been involved in either of City’s two competitive fixtures this season.

But with Delap desperate for regular first-team football, something that’s unlikely to happen at City, Palmer believes a switch to the Hawthorns would benefit the youngster.

He exclusively told Football FanCast:

“Of course, because he’s a young player. And I have said young players need to play first-team football.

“So yeah, go out and play first-team football, get experience, be in the first-team dressing room – and it’s a benefit for all parties.”

Steve Howey urges Newcastle United to sign Andrea Belotti

Steve Howey has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that Newcastle United need to add more firepower to their squad amid renewed interest in Andrea Belotti.

The Magpies reportedly had Belotti on their radar before the coronavirus pandemic struck and his current employers, Torino, have slashed their asking price.

Newcastle only scored 46 Premier League goals as they finished 12th in the Premier League standings last term.

Callum Wilson ended the campaign as the Magpies’ top goalscorer with 12, while fellow striker Joelinton has still only scored 10 goals since joining from Hoffenheim in a club-record £40million move two years ago.

It has led to boss Steve Bruce looking to bolster his options and he is also hoping to seal midfielder Joe Willock’s return following an impressive loan spell from Arsenal.

Belotti was involved in Italy’s Euro 2020-winning squad this summer and has scored 105 Torino goals in 228 appearances.

Howey believes the 27-year-old could be the ideal addition to provide Wilson with competition at St James’ Park.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “I think Newcastle need more firepower because, ultimately, the only main striker is Callum Wilson.

“Obviously they’ve got Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron and Joelinton but are they scoring regularly? No.

“The team missed Callum Wilson when he got injured.”

Aston Villa open transfer talks over Leon Bailey

Aston Villa fans have been handed an exciting transfer update about their side’s pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen star Leon Bailey.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that Dean Smith’s side are eyeing up a swoop for the Jamaican winger this summer as they look to bring in some new faces ahead of the start of the Premier League campaign next month.

And now, The Express and Star’s Matt Maher has said: “The clubs are currently in talks over a deal but while Leverkusen accept the 23-year-old is likely to move on this summer, they will not let him go on the cheap.

“Bailey, who scored 15 goals in the Bundesliga last season, has emerged as one of Villa’s top targets as they look to bolster their attacking ranks. Boss Dean Smith also has a serious interest in Burnley’s Dwight McNeil and it is thought Villa are prepared to make one more big-money signing.”Fans will be buzzing

The £31.5m-rated Bailey enjoyed an outstanding campaign in the Bundesliga last season, bagging an impressive 15 goals and providing another 11 assists to boot too.

Ajax’s former youth coach Ronald de Boer once said of Bailey: “He’s so fast it’s not normal. His speed, combined with his technique, is very rare. Exceptional. He has no weak points.”

And, having been involved in signing him in the first place, Leverkusen’s sporting director, Rudi Voller, added: “He’s got extraordinary pace, he’s very skilful with the ball, and he will give further impetus to our attacking department.”

Villa fans will rightly be buzzing at the news that the club have opened talks over signing Bailey, with the tantalising prospect of seeing him line up alongside the likes of Jack Grealish and Emi Buendia in a fluid front three just behind Ollie Watkins something to get very excited about.

The fact that Villa are being aggressive in the transfer market – having of course looked to sign Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe – is a real indication of just how keen they are in taking that next step in the Premier League.

Fans will be very excited with how things are shaping up at Villa Park this summer.

The Athletic journalist drops Leeds transfer update

The Athletic’s Adam Crafton has dropped a fresh update on Leeds United’s plans for the rest of the summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

Writing initially via his official Twitter account, Crafton said: “Leeds won’t do loads this summer but still want young centre mid + closing on Bamford extension.”

And then via a piece for The Athletic, he added: “This summer, therefore, had always been intended to be a little more measured, particularly as several of last summer’s deals are spread across several years. In this summer’s market, Leeds’ spending will be more reserved but sporting director Victor Orta has now closed two deals.

“It is not expected to be the end of the business, as Leeds are also searching for a young central midfield player with the potential to develop under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa. As things stand, it is unlikely to be the Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez, who has represented Uruguay at the Copa America.”

Bielsa may be frustrated

Having only seen Amari Miller and Junior Firpo come through the door thus far – the former will hardly be expected to make an impression on the first-team either way – Bielsa may be slightly worried at where things stand with Leeds in the transfer window.

Having seen reports for a number of months linking them with the likes of Nahitan Nandez and Rodrigo de Paul, news that Leeds want a younger central midfielder, and that it won’t be the Cagliari midfielder, will surely frustrate the Leeds boss.

The Whites could do with some more first-team quality signings in the middle of the park, both as competition for the likes of Kalvin Phillips or even to ease out someone like Mateusz Klich.

Younger signings with an eye to the future is all well and good, but Bielsa will feel that next season in the Premier League they could really make a go of finishing in a European place having finished inside the top half in their first campaign back in the top-flight.

That requires a bit more work on Orta’s part like last summer when he snapped up the likes of Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Rodrigo and Raphinha to come straight in and boost the starting line-up.

Firpo’s arrival solves one problem at left-back, but they need a couple more at least. It’s exactly why Bielsa may be worried with this latest transfer update.

Meanwhile, Leeds could sign a dream De Paul alternative in this star…
