UAE journalist makes big claim about Newcastle takeover

Newcastle United’s takeover is on the verge of completion and UAE ex-pat radio host and Magpies fan Andrew Davis has made a big claim on Twitter this week that suggests that it is indeed done and dusted. He states that his source has said that all players at the club have been told the deal has been complete having only returned to training on Tuesday for the first time in several months.Davis tweeted:

The final decision has been on the Premier League’s shoulders for many weeks and as the first phase of their ‘Project Restart’ got underway, it seems rather plausible that they have had time to now ratify the Saudi-backed consortium’s takeover bid.

Celtic fans react as Keith Jackson reveals SPFL crisis talks

Loads of Celtic fans have been reacting to a story from The Daily Record’s Keith Jackson, as he claims an SPFL summit could soon crown the Hoops champions

According to Jackson’s report, league bosses will hold conference calls next week after Belgium’s Jupiler League ended their season – the table in Belgium will stand, meaning Club Brugge will be declared champions. Brugge were 15 points clear of Gent, while Celtic are 13 points clear of Rangers.

Jackson claims that the crisis talks will discuss whether or not to follow the Jupiler League’s example and end the season, and states that if they do opt to “pull the plug” on the campaign then results will stand, meaning Celtic will be champions “with immediate effect”.

The option of a null and void season is not on the table, says Jackson, despite calls from many at Ibrox.

Of course, ending the season now would cause quite the divide in Glasgow, and it’s fair to say the Parkhead faithful are enjoying this one on Twitter.

Loads of Bhoys have flocked to Jackson’s post to mock their rivals and jokingly celebrate being “Championes”, and you can find some of the best Twitter responses down below…

Sheffield United: Fans suggest their worst XIs for the club over the last decade

A recent Twitter post has had many Sheffield United fans thinking about some of the poorer players to have represented the club in recent years.

The account @BladesPod said that they had put together their “worst Blades XI of the decade” ahead of their latest podcast.

Their post led to a barrage of replies from Sheffield United supporters who couldn’t wait to make their suggestions as to who should be included in the team.

Whilst the Blades are going great in the Premier League under Chris Wilder at the moment, the ‘teenies’ hasn’t been the best decade for the club as they spent six years playing in League One (Transfermarkt).

There are therefore plenty of contenders for players who should make the team, and some names seem to crop up in most of the fan made XIs.

The likes of Steve Simonsen, Dean Hammond and Martyn Woolford have the honour in being in most teams. Here are the players some Blades supporters selected in response to the post from @BladesPod on Twitter…

Sheffield United fans, who would make your worst XI since 2010? Let us know in the comments below…

Sheffield United fans were annoyed despite George Baldock’s goal

When George Baldock scored Sheffield United’s equaliser against Tottenham Hotspur, he didn’t bother to really celebrate it.It was the 26-year-old’s first-ever Premier League goal, having scored at every other level between the Championship and National League, so it should have been a special moment, especially as it was a well-worked strike that had brought the Blades level. However, VAR overshadowed the occasion, as he was made to wait for confirmation of the goal, just minutes after David McGoldrick was robbed of his season’s first:

While Blades fans were happy to see their team back on level terms, they were still furious with the decision that went against them, as well as how long it took for the goal to be confirmed.

VAR has been a big talking point so far this season in the Premier League, due to the controversy that has often surrounded it, which is the case with this game.

Many at Sheffield United feel they have been robbed of a win, as well as the enjoyment of getting their equaliser.

A selection of Twitter reaction to the goal, including frustrated Sheffield United fans, can be seen below:

Sheffield United’s January intentions must be on a poacher, says Stan Collymore

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

What more harm could one more do?

Well, not a lot of harm, but it’s still something that Sheffield United shouldn’t bother themselves with.

There are a lot of men all eyeing a spot in the starting line-up at Bramall Lane, but according to Stan Collymore, there’s still room for one more.

What’s he said?

Writing in The Daily Mirror (Print edition, 5/11/19, Page 51), Collymore felt that although their defence has been superb, a lack of goals could well see the Blades fall off. As a result, he’s suggested bringing someone to add an extra couple of goals to see them over the line:

“Sheffield United were one of my tips for relegation and, of course, that might still happen. Defensively, they are conceding 0.75 goals a game — Champions League percentages — and what they need now is to push on from a very solid start.

“To do that they need more goals and if they get them they will be safe. I’d imagine a loan striker will be top of Wilder’s Christmas wish-list because if they can get a poacher of Jermain Defoe’s calibre — all relegation bets will be off.”

Too many chefs spoiling the broth

Should Sheffield United really go through the effort of trying to sign someone like that for what might only end up being one or two goals throughout the season?

It just doesn’t make any sense.

As has been pointed out earlier, there are far too many men already for them to choose from, and unless there is a mass exodus in the window, it wouldn’t be wise to add another one into the mix.

Collymore makes reference to Defoe and although he has a wonderful Premier League record, bagging 163 goals in 496 games, it would feel like a waste of wages to bring in an added attacking player. After all, only top quality would be an upgrade on the options they currently have and it’s unlikely they’ll find that in January.

Collymore isn’t talking about bringing in 20 goal a year player, just someone who can provide 4 or 5 to take them over the edge and keep them out of trouble.

Find out which Premier League newcomer is a future England boss in the making in the video below…

Someone like Billy Sharp has been a reliable source of goals for the Blades down the years, with 103 of them in 250 games (via Transfermarkt), so if they find themselves laking goals from the likes of Lys Mousset and Oliver McBurnie in the first team, why not go with someone that you know can get you goals.

It’s a risk-free method and wouldn’t do them any great harm.

There’s no point in spending money just for the sake of it.

Arsenal’s predicted XI against Wolves

After their thrilling 5-5 draw against Liverpool in the League Cup in midweek, Arsenal will play Wolves at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday in the Premier League.

The Gunners lost that match on penalties against the Reds, meaning they have won just one of their last four games in all competitions. As such, Unai Emery will be hoping for a response from his side against the Midlands outfit.

Watch the moment Granit Xhaka’s Arsenal career may have come to an ugly end in the video below…

Here, we try to predict his starting XI for the clash.

In goal, Bernd Leno is expected to return to the starting line-up. Emiliano Martinez still has the Europa League to prove himself, but conceding five at Anfield will not have done him any favours.

Having not started in midweek, Kieran Tierney should be included from the off at the weekend.

Although Sokratis and David Luiz have not exactly excelled this term, having been part of a defence that has conceded 14 goals already in the league, the fact that Rob Holding and Shkodran Mustafi shipped a handful of goals in Merseyside means the two veterans should be handed a reprieve.

At right-back, Hector Bellerin could be given the nod in the Premier League for the first time this season in what would be a very new look defence.

After shouting expletives at the Arsenal crowd as he was booed when walking off the pitch against Crystal Palace, captain Granit Xhaka will not feature Unai Emery confirmed during his press conference.

As such, Lucas Torreira could play alongside Matteo Guendouzi. The Uruguay international’s fighting spirit should be a boost against a strong midfield that includes Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho.

The three behind the striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation could throw up some surprises.

Nicolas Pepe is expected to return and, after claiming an assist against Liverpool, Mesut Ozil could be brought back into the fold in the league. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could move out left to make way for another striker.

After scoring seven goals in four starts, Gabriel Martinelli deserves to play up front. Should he be given a starting berth, it will be the perfect opportunity for the 18-year-old to prove to his boss that he has what it takes to play in the Premier League rather than just in the cup competitions.

Leeds fans think Jack Clarke will leave if Reece James transfer goes through

Leeds United are reportedly preparing a loan bid for Chelsea’s Reece James, who has raised eyebrows since he joined Wigan Athletic on loan last season.

However, the complications of another homegrown player arriving at Elland Road has got some fans speculating as to how the club could respond to James’ potential arrival.

After an impressive spell at Wigan in the 2018/19 campaign, James returned to Chelsea where he has slowly emerged into the first-team picture under manager Frank Lampard, appearing in the Champions League group stage – although the 19-year-old is yet to make a Premier League appearance so far this season.

With Leeds having won just one of their last four Championship fixtures, the potential arrival of James in January has excited some of the club’s fanbase, though some fans have speculated that his arrival could pave the way for Jack Clarke – on loan from Tottenham Hotspur – to depart back to north London.

Given James’ ability, it’s no surprise that this rumour has got fans talking on social media.

Here’s what some of the Whites faithful had to say about Clarke and Nketiah in light of the recent report…

Leeds fans impressed by Eddie Nketiah’s skill on international duty

He’s huffing, he’s puffing, but he can’t break the door down. You just wonder how many hints he’s going to have to give before Marcelo Bielsa starts paying attention. It’s no secret that there are a lot of Leeds fans who have been crying out for Eddie Nketiah to start ahead of Patrick Bamford, but it just seems that no matter how hard he tries, there just hasn’t been that breakthrough.Which is perhaps why he’s being forced to try some new methods to show the Leeds boss exactly what he can do.

He posted a video to his Twitter feed yesterday of himself scoring during training with the England U21 side, capped off by a very impressive no-look finish for one of his efforts.

Leeds fans when they saw the video couldn’t contain themselves, and used it as yet another opportunity to demand that he be given more chances under Bielsa.

So far he’s netted four times for the Whites, two of which were late strikes in the league.

Here’s some of the reaction.

Whether it’s pressure from the fans, or it’s pressure from himself in scoring as many goals as he can to get him to notice, you just wonder how much longer we’re going to have to wait before he starts becoming a first-team regular.

Real Madrid’s recent targets pose a serious question for their transfer policy

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Real Madrid had a pretty productive transfer window over the summer.

As a whole, eight players joined Los Blancos’ squad from abroad and three of them made a step up from Real Madrid Castilla. When everything is said and done, a number of great squad members have been added to the team.

Of course, the biggest scoop was actually Eden Hazard who was snatched away from Chelsea and represented the only real Galactico signing Florentino Perez brought in.

But the rest should also not be disregarded as Luka Jovic and Eder Militao were also big names that are now donning the white.

However, even with all of those players joining the club and covering numerous positions, Los Blancos are seemingly nowhere near done with their revamp of the team.

The likes of Christian Eriksen, Harry Kane and Milan Skriniar have been names mentioned and linked with Real Madrid as some of their possible big targets for the near future.

But even though it’s easy to see why Zinedine Zidane would want them in the Spanish capital, it does pose a serious question over their transfer policy as a whole, solely because they have already bought players for those exact positions just recently.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

The potential signing of Skriniar makes little sense since Militao is already a young and aspiring centre-back who’s eager to emerge to the scene.

Jovic was bought to replace Karim Benzema as Real Madrid’s up and coming forward and yet, targeting Kane would definitely brush the Serbian aside.

The case of Eriksen is also a peculiar one – do the Galacticos actually need another attacking midfielder when they already have a total of seven players who can play in that role in some capacity?

So while possibly bringing all of those players sounds like brilliant business by Perez and co on paper, it also reveals a major policy flaw at the same time.

Why were all of those young prospects bought in the first place? Are Real Madrid just targeting big names for their reputation and not according to their actual needs?

There are many questions that remain to be answered but as it stands, Los Blancos don’t seem to have a clear plan in place.

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn scouted by Man United, says Noel Whelan

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

According to former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan, Manchester United are looking to make a move for Aston Villa star John McGinn in January – per quotes on Football Insider.

What’s he said?

Villa have endured a tough spell in the Premier League as of late, picking up just one victory from their opening six matches.

Though, some of their playoff heroes have continued their rich vein of personal form – most notably McGinn, who ranks as their best player according to WhoScored ratings at an average of 7.54 per game.

He’s scored two goals, assisted one and picked up the Man of the Match award in half of their fixtures, continuing on from last season’s campaign where his seven goals and nine assists majorly contributed towards their promotion.

Over the summer, Sir Alex Ferguson wanted United to sign his fellow countryman, and it appears they may well be thinking along the same lines this time around.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan claimed:

“He’s Villa’s one shining light. When you watch Villa, McGinn is the best player every game. He is involved in everything and is a fantastic player.

“That is why Manchester United are looking at him for January. That’s what I’ve been told. They’re scouting him. I think they could do with someone like McGinn. He would be far better for them than someone else like Juan Mata.”

A worrying but expected sign

It’s fair to say that Villa aren’t one of the top sides in the Premier League having only just returned to the top-flight this season, so it is understandable that when any player stands out, it is likely to bring interest from the financial heavyweights in the division.

As the previous statistics suggest, he’s been far and away one of their most impressive players and one that they’ll need to keep hold of at least until the summer if they want to remain in the big time.

Losing McGinn in January could seriously put their survival hopes at risk, considering the club already occupy a relegation place, that’s not something they’ll want to happen unless they are forced to do so.

The club does have riches in the central midfield position, but no player is like the Scot, and his absence would undoubtedly create a big void in the attacking phase. They should, therefore, be fearing the worst if United are circling around.
