Open tryout in USA for regional team in 2016 WICB Super50

Players in USA, Canada and Bermuda will have a rare opportunity of an open casting call this September in Indianapolis to see if they are good enough to take on West Indies stars in a combined ICC Americas regional team to play in the 2016 Nagico Super50

Peter Della Penna22-Jun-2015Players in USA, Canada and Bermuda will have a rare opportunity of an open casting call this September in Indianapolis to see if they are good enough to take on West Indies stars in a combined ICC Americas regional team to play in the 2016 Nagico Super50 tournament. Top performing players for the Americas team in the West Indies domestic 50-over tournament may subsequently be offered tryouts or contracts to play in the 2016 Caribbean Premier League. The announcement was delivered by the ICC during the Associate and Affiliate Members meeting on day one of the ICC Annual Conference in Barbados. The ICC head of global development Tim Anderson hopes it will result in finding some hidden gems to lift up cricket in the region.”We came up with the idea of having a selection camp to pick the team but before that let’s have an open trial to find some talent within the wider region,” Anderson told ESPNcricinfo on Monday from Barbados. “Let’s have an open application process and see if we can find some rough diamonds and get them into the system. Particularly in the USA and Canada with large geographies and challenging environments regarding talent identification, we want to see whether there are some people out there that we haven’t identified or that haven’t been involved in a system that has been able to identify them yet, that might be good enough to play at this level.”Rather than having players apply through their home cricket boards where there are often accusations of favouritism and internal politics at play regarding selection and promotion of players by the respective administrations, Anderson said the ICC Americas office will be overseeing the entire application and evaluation process. Players aged 16 to 30 who are eligible to play for an Associate or Affiliate member in the Americas region can submit bio information and links to their club or league stats as well as videos of match footage or training sessions to give evaluators a better sense of their skill sets. The online application process will be open until July 17. Depending on the volume of applications and skilled candidates that apply, Anderson says that probably between 50 and 100 players will be invited to Indianapolis to take part in phase one of the trial at World Sports Park from September 18 to 21.”We had a really good experience at the facility in Indianapolis a couple of months ago [at ICC Americas Division One Twenty20 and obviously wanting the facilities to continue to be used as well as the fact that Indianapolis as a sports city provides more than just a cricket ground,” Anderson said. “Dave Cameron was there as well so he was a part of the conversation from the start. Mayor Ballard was a part of the conversation. We talked to him about it and he liked the idea a lot too. So over the last month or so we’ve been developing the concept and here we are.”Obviously there needs to be a cap on participation numbers given that effectively we only have a long weekend to establish the best of those that apply and get selected in that first phase. We feel that 100 people might be the maximum to sort through over that period of time in terms of fitness testing, skills testing, match awareness and game related testing as well.”After phase one is complete, a select number of players will be invited back to Indianapolis for phase two of the combined trial from September 24 to 27 during which the newly-identified players will be joined by other regional players who have been tagged as star performers from the ICC Americas Division One Twenty20 tournament in May and the ICC World T20 Qualifier in July. From there, a final squad will be picked to play for an ICC Americas team at the West Indies domestic 50-over tournament early in 2016.Although a coaching staff has not been announced, several high profile names from within the West Indies are understood to be in consideration. Another name that may be on the radar for his expertise is Mike Young. The American most recently was part of Australia’s coaching staff as a consultant during their World Cup triumph in March and has an extensive background in baseball. An American coaching background is something Anderson is keen on integrating into the whole evaluation process in partnership with the ICC and WICB’s established mechanisms.”The process will be coordinated by ICC Americas but there will be some involvement from the WICB in support as well,” Anderson said. “We are also looking at some initial conversations with some of the big sports franchises in Indianapolis and the interlinking skills with baseball are obvious. So we might try to get some baseball coaches as part of this. It’s a bit of an open process for us to try to combine the best of the region in terms of players, coaching staff, support and also get the best of American sports analysis and assessment involved in the system as well.”

ICC blasts USACA's selection policies, player treatment

The ICC’s ACSU has recently received a formal complaint related to national team selection procedures of the USA Cricket Association, according to information contained in a 40-page report delivered at the ICC annual conference last week in Barbados

Peter Della Penna01-Jul-2015The ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit has recently received a formal complaint related to national team selection procedures of the USA Cricket Association, according to information contained in a 40-page report delivered at the ICC annual conference last week in Barbados. The complaint references a threat of legal action “by the parent of an aggrieved child” against the USA U-19 selection process, with the complaint to the ICC ACSU alleging that the selection process was “corrupt” and should be investigated.Though the ICC report did not name any individual, the complaint is believed to reference Shyam Patnam who, as ESPNcricinfo reported last week, was pursuing arbitration with USACA over the USA U-19 selection process held in May. Patnam separately alleged in a letter to USACA that three players were unfairly selected after not attending the trial while four other players benefitted from nepotism, due to relations with current or former USACA administrators. He added that the seven players should be replaced in the USA U-19 squad by his son, Aravind, and six others. Patnam’s initial request for an appeals hearing with USACA was ignored, prompting him to hire California sports attorney Jeremy Evans in a bid to escalate the matter. In addition to the mention of the USA U-19 selection process, the ICC report also outlined numerous instances of substandard selection processes for USA’s other national teams, as well as accusations of politically motivated support staff appointments. The report, which was prepared by a review group led by ICC chief executive, David Richardson, and head of global development, Tim Anderson, states that many USA players and stakeholders referred to the board’s method of staff appointments “as a joke” and felt that such decisions “were damaging to the team’s ability to perform at the highest level” due to the incompetence of support staff.USA technical director Robin Singh’s reputation as an Indian Premier League and Caribbean Premier League title-winning coach was highlighted as one of the few things that served to be beneficial to players. It came with a caveat though, that his coaching pedigree and acumen are helpful only when he is available. The report cited Singh’s prolonged absences, due to his franchise T20 commitments, as “an impediment to the development of the best players and teams in the US.””It is strongly felt that for USA cricket to meet its potential, the recruitment of full-time, competent coaching resources based in the USA is a fundamental requirement,” the report stated.Worryingly, the report also cited instances in which the welfare of USA’s players is undermined by USACA’s inability to provide them proper insurance coverage prior to and during their participation at ICC tournaments held in the USA and overseas. It is part of a pattern of administrative behavior in which players interviewed told the ICC that they felt “disrespected and not supported by USACA.””Such a feeling was exacerbated when, at times, USACA was unable to provide appropriate medical insurance for national team players,” the report stated. “This saw players being asked to sign pre-tour/event waivers,” which would have absolved USACA of financial liability in the case of injury. On some occasions, the report cited, players were not reimbursed when they sustained injures and required medical attention while playing or training for the USA.In its defence, USACA claimed that the geographical size of the country, combined with insufficient funds for preparation and lack of vacation days the players are able to obtain from their day jobs make it challenging for the national team to get together for pre-tournament training in order to produce consistently positive performances. The ICC report countered that even though these arguments have merit, the obstacles should not be as debilitating as they are made out to be.”These challenges are important, however, they are not insurmountable with the involvement of competent, properly motivated people, the development of partnerships and the raising of income. Noting the apparent lack of confidence and distrust within the cricket community about USACA’s capacity to implement a merit-based high performance system, it is, however, doubtful that the injection of additional funds only would lead to better on-field performances,” the report noted. As for women’s cricket initiatives, the ICC expressed disappointment in the fact that the number of female hard-ball players in the country had only risen from 75 to 135 from 2011 to 2015, despite USA’s participation in the 2011 ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Bangladesh. The data submitted by USACA, and similar figures reported by other governing bodies in the Americas, resulted in the ICC pulling the plug on funding ICC Americas women’s tournaments for World Cup and World T20 berths until better efforts are made by the respective local governing bodies like USACA to develop “more robust” playing pools and domestic structures for women.”The review group is of the view that, given the right environment and support, the USA has significant potential to develop an internationally competitive women’s team in a relatively short period of time. This is largely due to the possibility of talented female athletes in the US that have grown up playing softball, hockey or even lacrosse being able to transition into cricket, and/or females with cricket playing expatriate heritage being given greater opportunities to play competitively.”

Heartthrobs brace up to battle heavyweights

Many from New Zealand’s squad have played very little T20 cricket in India, while the hosts are on auto-pilot in the shortest format

The Preview by Alagappan Muthu14-Mar-2016Match factsTuesday, March 15, 2016

Big pictureThe tournament proper is upon us. Its name – Super 10s – says big billing. Its first match caters to the same. India are the heavyweights. New Zealand are the heartthrobs. Considering the World T20 began with fingers dangled at the organisers for their ticketing strategy and the collective anger of the Associates over an unforgiving qualifying round, a blockbuster match between two Full Members at a jam-packed Jamtha cannot arrive sooner.A slice of the hype went missing last December when Brendon McCullum announced his retirement from international cricket. In his stead comes Colin Munro, who has hit the most sixes in a first-class innings and struck New Zealand’s fastest T20 fifty. With Munro, though, comes an asterisk. He has batted only five times in India. Munro managed 19 and 6 for Auckland in the Champions League T20 in 2011 and later made 1,4,1 for New Zealand A against India A in 2013.Very few from New Zealand’s squad have played T20 cricket in Indian conditions. Thirteen of them have played less than 15 games in the country, and the man with the most experience – Ross Taylor, with 46 matches – is coming back after injury.India, on the other hand, have gone on record to say they are on “auto-pilot” in the shortest format thanks to the exposure from the IPL. Their top order is perhaps the strongest in the tournament and you would think with Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya lower down, there is enough of a failsafe should things go wrong. It has worked so far. India have won 10 out of 11 T20I matches since the start of the year.Form guideIndia: WWWWW (last five completed matches)
New Zealand: WWLWWWatch out forMartin Guptill’s recent white-ball exploits include a double-hundred at the 50-over World Cup and fifty off 19 balls in a T20I. It is perceived that the slow, turning tracks in India may dilute his menace. He doesn’t lack for power – he has a reputation for hitting some monstrous sixes down the ground – but Guptill will need to mind the pace of the pitches first before sending balls into the sky. He’s been rated as a proper batsman, but the highest Yuvraj can bat is at No. 5. He had coped reasonably well on seamer-friendly pitches in Bangladesh and if the time he’s spent at the crease has revived his confidence – and he had said it has – that’s another match-winner in an already powerful batting line-up.Team newsThe only reason there may be a change made to India’s Asia Cup-winning XI is if Mohammed Shami has impressed the management enough to squeeze in ahead of Ashish Nehra.India (probable) 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 MS Dhoni (capt and wk), 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Ashish Nehra/Mohammed ShamiNew Zealand might need to pick between Mitchell Santner and Nathan McCullum as the lead spinner. The other toss up might be between Mitchell McClenaghan, who has been part of an IPL-winning Mumbai Indians team, and Adam Milne.New Zealand (probable) 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Kane Williamson (capt), 3 Colin Munro, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Corey Anderson, 6 Grant Elliott, 7 Luke Ronchi (wk), 8 Mitchell Santner/ Nathan McCullum, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Mitchell McClenaghan/ Adan MilnePitch and conditionsRain probably doesn’t strike twice in Nagpur, but it was overcast on the eve of the match and the forecast is said to be partly cloudy on Tuesday. The surfaces in use for the qualifiers here have been dry. Balls have stopped on the batsman a bit – even offcutters from the seam bowlers.Stats and trivia New Zealand have played only one T20I in India – they won it by one run in Chennai in 2012 It appears India’s bogey team in T20Is is New Zealand – four matches, four losses. Quotes”I suppose whatever build-up that you have, it doesn’t promise success. I think in the international game, it is important that you get your head around changing formats consistently.”
.”They have not paid that much attention to who is in the opposition, who I am bowling to or batting against. They have backed their skills, which they also do in the IPL, and that has been an X-factor for our team in the last few series.”

Blackwell, Lanning give Australia easy win

In a clash that briefly flirted with the gripping, it was Australia’s experience that helped them ride a top-order wobble as they began their title defence with a six-wicket win against South Africa at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur

In a clash that briefly flirted with the gripping, it was Australia’s experience that helped them ride a top-order wobble as they began their title defence with a six-wicket win against South Africa at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur. It was vice-captain Alex Blackwell and captain Meg Lanning who led the way to chase down 103 easily in the end, after they were reduced to 9 for 3 in the fourth over.South Africa had an excellent launch pad at 69 without loss in 12 overs after opting to bat. Then they fell into a crater courtesy rush of blood and indecision in shot selection to huff and puff to 102 for 6. As hard as they tried, defending it was never going to be easy against the masters of the big occasion who are gunning for their fourth successive title.Eventually, the batting meltdown played a big part in the result, as Lanning and Blackwell allayed fears with an unbroken 52-run fifth-wicket stand off just 38 balls to see Australia home with nine balls to spare.Spin was expected to play a major part, but to everyone’s surprise, it was a flat batting track, where batsmen could hit through the line without worrying about turn or bounce. South Africa showed they were up for a fight as Dane van Niekerk did the early running by making 45 in a 72-run opening stand with Trisha Chetty, before Australia strangulated them. While Ellyse Perry hustled the batsmen with pace, Lauren Cheatle’s canny variations resulted in South Africa’s middle order having to manufacture strokes that didn’t connect. Of course it didn’t help that Australia’s fielders were on the ball, showcasing tremendous athleticism and agility on one of the biggest outfields in India, cutting out at least 10 runs to the final total. Chetty’s scratchy 34 eventually helped them cross the 100-run mark.Australia’s thoughts of the chase being a walk in the park were firmly put on the backburner. Alyssa Healy walked across to flick, only to find her leg stump flattened to give the fired-up Shabnim Ismail an early sniff. Perry bottom-edged a cut to the wicketkeeper, while Ellyse Villani chopped on to leave Australia in tatters before they could reach double figures.Lanning’s illness that kept her off the field for most parts of South Africa’s innings meant she could come in either after 30 minutes or the fall of the fifth wicket. An air of anticipation hovered in the South African camp, but the conclusion of Ismail’s opening burst took with it the sting in their attack as Blackwell and Jess Jonassen added 44 for the fourth wicket. More importantly, the pair ensured the asking rate never got out of hand. When Jonassen stepped out to be stumped, the game was back in the balance as Australia slipped to 53 for 4, needing 50 off 47 balls.Lanning, not quite her usual self, struggled to run, but wasn’t going to miss out on freebies on offer as she helped herself to three fours to bring the equation down to 23 off the last four overs. Once within striking distance, the feared white-ball striker in her surfaced as she hit Ismail for two fierce square cuts, to convert a tricky chase into a cruise.

Mark Wood facing eight-week lay-off after ankle setback

Mark Wood has been told that he requires a second operation on his troublesome left ankle that is expected to rule him out for up to eight weeks of the 2016 season

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Apr-2016Mark Wood, the Durham and England bowler, has been told that he requires a second operation on his troublesome left ankle that is expected to rule him out for up to eight weeks of the 2016 season*.Wood, who flew home early from England’s tour of the UAE in November to undergo an initial operation on the ankle, was forced to pull out of his scheduled comeback for Durham’s second XI against Scotland, at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday, after suffering from more pain during pre-season training. After a cortisone injection failed to resolve the problem earlier this month, Wood today visited a specialist in the Netherlands who diagnosed a small piece of bone that is causing irritation and inflammation at the back of the joint.A keyhole procedure will take place either later this week or early next, and while the anticipated recovery time is less than the three to six months that would have been required after a full operation, it is still likely to rule Wood out of the three-Test series against Sri Lanka that gets underway next month.Wood, who played the most recent of his eight Tests against Pakistan at Abu Dhabi in October, was an important member of the England team that won back the Ashes last summer, claiming ten wickets in four Tests, including four in each of England’s wins at Cardiff and Trent Bridge. However, Wood himself has faced up to the increasing likelihood of surgery, admitting last week: “At some point, the back of my ankle will need to be operated on, that has been made pretty clear to me by England.”It would be the worst possible time, the worst possible feeling, the worst possible everything, but I would have to take it on the chin.”* 2pm BST: This story was updated with further information
