Zimbabwe look to save series

Mashrafe Mortaza will be full of confidence after his first Man-of-the-Match award in ODIs in over four years•BCB

Big pictureThe 2-0 lead going into the third ODI obviously puts Zimbabwe in a do-or-die situation but at the same time, Bangladesh will be under pressure too. They would be expected to close out the five-match series with a third consecutive win, and simply doing that would be a task in itself. The year so far has been of two extremes for Bangladesh: nine months of losing followed by four weeks of winning. The turnaround in the Zimbabwe series was much needed, and they will want to extend the victorious streak. The home side has a few more performers to bank on. Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque have made important runs, adding 158 for the opening partnership in the second ODI, the team’s second highest. Mominul Haque has shown he can bat at a lower position and still make a contribution.Mashrafe Mortaza, despite not being satisfied with his own performance, has led from the front. Arafat Sunny took four wickets, and generally bowled tightly whenever asked to do the job. Shakib Al Hasan was out for a golden duck in the second game but hit back with a very important late spell to keep Elton Chigumbura quiet. For the visitors, Solomon Mire was a welcome addition to their performers’ list. The young allrounder reached his maiden ODI fifty and looks like a strong hitter. Chigumbura was proud of his bowlers and the fielding but still they remain inconsistent with the bat. The top-order was in too much of a rush while the middle-order couldn’t keep up as soon the required-rate rose.Despite Zimbabwe’s indifferent form, the third ODI promises much. Bangladesh have the chance to clinch the series early, and that should be motivation enough for Chigumbura’s men to put together a fighting performance.Form guide (last five completed games, most recent first)Bangladesh WWLLL
Zimbabwe LLLWLIn the spotlightElton Chigumbura made a telling contribution in the field in the second ODI and had he stayed till the end with the bat during the chase, Bangladesh would have had a real match on their hands. He will be expected to play a more central role in the next game.Mominul Haque gave away a good start at No. 3 but did a good job in the demanding No. 7 position, despite it being a spot he isn’t used to. He could revert to his original position again, and will be expected to make a major contribution, given the chance.Team newsBangladesh have dropped Al-Amin Hossain to have a look at Shafiul Islam. He has been released to play in the Dhaka Premier League for Abahani. Otherwise there is little expectation of a change in the rest of the line-up.Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Anamul Haque, 3 Mominul Haque, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Sabbir Rahman, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 9 Arafat Sunny, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11, Rubel HossainZimbabwe persisted with the same line-up for the first two ODIs, but there could be places up for grabs in the crunch game. They may surprise Bangladesh with Timycen Maruma or Peter Moor.Zimbabwe: 1 Sikandar Raza, 2 Hamilton Masakadza, 3 Vusi Sibanda, 4 Brendan Taylor, 5 Regis Chakabva (wk), 6 Elton Chigumbura (capt), 7 John Nyumbu, 8 Tinashe Panyangara, 9 Tendai Chatara, 10 Solomon Mire, 11 Tafadzwa KamungoziPitch and conditionsThe Shere Bangla National Stadium pitches have been playing well in the six Dhaka Premier League matches held there this month. Batsmen have scored at 4.47 per over, though the team batting first will arguably have the better batting conditions.Stats and trivia Bangladesh have completed 100 international wins – 82 in ODIs, 7 Tests and 11 in T20s. Mashrafe has become the second Bangladeshi after Shakib Al Hasan to have won ten or more Man-of-the-Match awards.Quotes”We are certainly playing a one-off game that we must win. I hope the guys bounce back.”
Vusi Sibanda
“There is no chance of taking it easy just because we are 2-0 ahead. We will definitely look to clinch the series tomorrow.”

Abraçamos a ideia dele – disse Caio.

Ireland 'no fear' approach pays off

Ireland coach Phil Simmons has never seen his team play better and believes the aggressive mindset, which appeared to take the beleaguered opposition by surprise, will become their trademark

The hangovers will not quite have matched Kingston or Bangalore, but Ireland’s players ensured they savoured their victory over West Indies in Nelson. The coach Phil Simmons has never seen his team play better and believes the aggressive mindset, which appeared to take the beleaguered opposition by surprise, will become their trademark.Ireland had 25 balls to spare as they chased down 304 – only a late flurry of wickets preventing the margin being even more convincing – and there was never a moment in the innings when they were losing control.”It’s the best I’ve seen so far and it augurs well for the future,” Simmons said. “It helps that we’ve had a stable top six, that makes a big difference. It’s just the first game, but all-round, in the field and the way we batted is the way we want to play cricket – in a positive way. It excited me the way we played.”The stand-out individual scores belonged to Paul Stirling, whose 92 was his first fifty-plus score in ODIs since May 2013 – 12 innings previous – followed by Ed Joyce’s supremely fluent 84 and an equally commanding, unbeaten 79 from Niall O’Brien. However, Simmons was also keen to highlight the early impact of captain William Porterfield, who pulled two early boundaries off Kemar Roach to reinforce that Ireland would not be tentative in the chase, after having been plundered for 167 in their final 15 overs with the ball.”They played four fast bowlers, thinking we wouldn’t be able to cope with the speed, and in the first couple of overs two short balls are pulled for [boundaries],” Simmons said. “It changes the way the team sees it. All of the top four played well. We played the fool a little at the end, but it’s great.”Niall O’Brien, who was central to the continuation of the high octane approach after Stirling fell just short of what would have been Ireland’s first ODI hundred since Porterfield against England in September 2013, said the warm-up matches, which produced mixed results, had taught Ireland that too much caution would not get them anywhere.”I thought we were a little timid in the warm-up games, perhaps a little careful, and it’s something we spoke about, playing with no fear and going for our shots. When you go through your shots 100%, more often or not they come off. We know we will need big scores during this tournament.”Ireland now have eight more days until their next match, against UAE in Brisbane, and that will bring a new set of challenges. It is a venue they have never played at and it is not a ground conducive to the spin-heavy attack Ireland shrewdly employed against West Indies. They will need to consider if they can find room for another seamer – Alex Cusack, Craig Young and Peter Chase are the options for Simmons and Porterfield to ponder. The first match reinforced the seam department is a weaker suit: the 24 overs of John Mooney, Max Sorensen and Kevin O’Brien cost 194, the 26 overs from the spinners 109.However, although conditions may not favour them, Andy McBrine will be difficult to leave out after his ten-over spell cost just 26, and George Dockrell remains the premier spinner after bagging three wickets.”UAE is a team we know a lot about. We don’t know much about the Gabba pitch but we’ll be right on the money,” O’Brien said. This is not the time for massive celebrations. Ireland’s aspirations for the tournament stretch much further.

England seek surge against rallying Sri Lanka

After shaky starts in the tournament, both England and Sri Lanka will be looking for resurgence when they meet in Wellington on Sunday

Holding: Would like to see Hales in for Ballance

Big PictureIf social media is to be believed, England’s players have been enjoying themselves in Wellington. Several have been spotted in bars and restaurants. Others have been snapped on the waterfront. Perhaps they’re hoping to feel comfortable in the city in which they suffered the massacre at New Zealand’s hands, eight days ago. Maybe they’re hoping to keep minds fresh and loose, still hoping to mount a World Cup surge. They had been dominant against Scotland, as Moeen Ali and Ian Bell galloped to a graceful 172-run opening stand, and Eoin Morgan rediscovered a little of his confidence. There was energy in the pace attack too. Though England had been beaten 5-2 by Sri Lanka late last year, that team had been without James Anderson and Stuart Broad, who are sure to make good use of more helpful conditions than the England seamers encountered in Sri Lanka.Their opposition is just beginning to show signs they are warming to the tournament. Sri Lanka’s top order sputtered against Afghanistan, but they then hit 332 for 1 against Bangladesh, and now each of the three senior batsmen has triple figures from the last two matches. The bowling is slowly beginning to fall into place as well. Rangana Herath is steady as ever, but Suranga Lakmal has also delivered three decent performances, and Thisara Perera appears in better rhythm than he did for much of his time in New Zealand.Sri Lanka’s fielding still gives cause for concern; three clear chances were spilt against Bangladesh. But they appear now to have at least increased the intensity of their outings. Given they have chosen to rest instead of train because of the close proximity of matches, they should be fresh enough to raise their energy a further level on Sunday. They will be buoyed too by the memory of their most recent trip to this venue, which yielded victory.Form guideEngland:WLLLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka:WWLWLEngland need James Anderson to improve his modest record in the World Cup so far•Getty Images

In the spotlightBefore the World Cup, James Anderson was bowling with such skill that England had hopes his new ball spells may dictate games. But here we are, three games into the tournament and he has taken two wickets – both against Scotland – at an average of 67 apiece and is conceding his runs at a rate of 6.38 per over. England need more from their senior players. Anderson also has a modest record in previous World Cups: in 2011 his wickets cost 70.50 runs each and he was the 11th most economical England bowler (conceding his runs at 6.55 per over); in 2007 he claimed his wickets at a cost of 41.12 apiece and was England’s fifth most economical bowler and in 2003, his best tournament to date, he claimed his wickets at a cost of 22.50 but was England’s eighth most economical bowler (with a run-rate of 4.78 per over). If England are to progress to the business end of this tournament, Anderson will need to improve that record.Ahead of the World Cup, ESPNcricinfo asked a random selection of players to name the best death bowler they had ever seen. One name cropped up time after time: Lasith Malinga. But, now aged 31 and on the way back following ankle surgery, he is struggling to recapture his former rhythm and pace. While his really fast days may be behind him, he was also uncharacteristically loose in the defeat to New Zealand. He claimed six wickets in the following two games against somewhat weaker opposition, but more may be required of him against England. The will remains strong – he has trained unusually hard in the past week – but there are doubts whether the body can still obey.Teams newsSri Lanka’s batting conundrum is now this: Upul Tharanga is with the squad – some believe he should have been there from the start – but Lahiru Thirimanne is already settled, and scoring runs, as an opener. Thirimanne, however, is the more versatile of the two batsmen, and is a better bet at No. 4 or 5, where Sri Lanka are in search of reinforcement. There is also a case to be made for strengthening the bowling, via quick Dushmantha Chameera, who made a laudable debut at this stadium last month.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Lahiru Thirimanne, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Upul Tharanga/Dimuth Karunaratne, 5 Mahela Jayawardene, 6 Angelo Mathews (capt) , 7 Dinesh Chandimal, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Rangana Herath, 10 Suranga Lakmal, 11 Lasith MalingaIt seems England will resist the urge to make changes. While Gary Ballance – called into the first game of the tournament having not played a List A match since September – has looked understandably rusty, the men who might replace him are equally short of cricket. Alex Hales continues to push for inclusion, though, and could yet force his way into the top three. Ravi Bopara, after a couple of training sessions where his disappointment was visible, is also pushing hard. Having stuck with Steven Finn for the Scotland game and seen him repay that faith with a performance where he bowled in excess of 140kph, it also seems they will stick with the same attack.England (possible): 1 Ian Bell, 2 Moeen Ali, 3 Gary Ballance, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan (capt), 6 James Taylor, 7 Jos Buttler (wk), 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Steven Finn, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James Anderson.Pitch and conditionsThe same pitch will be used in this game as the one on which New Zealand thrashed England. To that end, England have been preparing with an expectation that the ball may again swing throughout the innings. At least one side has been bowled out in each of the last three ODIs on the ground and only five times has a team exceeded 300 here; once since the end of 2005. In several recent games the ball has appeared to hold up just a little and provide some assistance to spinners. The weather is expected to remain warm, clear and windy, with the straight boundaries longer than the square.Stats and trivia England have won only five games against one of the top eight Test nations at World Cups since they lost the 1992 final in Melbourne. Sri Lanka have won both ODI series against England in the last year; home and away Upul Tharanga’s average in World Cups rises to 38.50, from a career average of 33.57 James Anderson has 24 World Cup wickets at 40.41 overallQuotes”Our performance is going to have to be better than anything we have produced at this World Cup so far.”
“The schedule certainly is inconvenient. It’s tiring for the boys too. It would have been nice to have finished our New Zealand matches before coming to Australia.”
