SL beat rain to win after Herath's six

Arnold: Mathews made a great declaration

Rangana Herath conjured six wickets on a day-five pitch that carried little threat and Sri Lanka hunted down 99 in a dramatic chase under the constant threat of rain and fading light. A big, dark cloud hung over the ground as Sri Lanka closed in but relented just long enough for Angelo Mathews to swat an unbeaten 25 off 13 and drag his side home with under five overs remaining. Just after Mathews tapped Junaid Khan to midwicket for a nearly suicidal, winning single, the skies opened up.Pakistan’s loss was the 12th by a side that had posted 450-plus batting first, as they tried to block their way to safety in the morning and found Herath all over them. They lost three wickets for 62 runs in 32 overs in the first session, and even though they tried being more positive after lunch, Sri Lanka pried out four more by tea. Sarfraz Ahmed counter-attacked with an unbeaten fifty but he was stranded as Herath spun out the tail to leave Sri Lanka 21 overs to get 99.Mahela Jayawardene walked out to open in his last Test innings in Galle and took Sri Lanka to 59 before the sight of the cloud made him make too much room outside leg and miss an accurate Junaid Khan yorker on 26. Kumar Sangakkara swung his way to 21 off 22 before he holed out to long-on as Sri Lanka’s desperation grew and Pakistan fretted over the falling visibility. It was left to captain Mathews to slog a couple of sixes into a wildly cheering crowd to beat the rain.Pakistan’s downfall began in the morning when their young batsmen were reluctant to score after Dhammika Prasad had ended the nightwatchman Saeed Ajmal’s resistance in the sixth over of the day. Ahmed Shehzad made 16 off 74 and was around with the equally sedate Azhar Ali for 93 balls, but the partnership fetched Pakistan merely 28. Even half-volleys were patted away regularly and the spinners were allowed to settle into their rhythms. The occasional attempts to rotate the strike were rushed and tense. Azhar stepped out at times, but went to lunch on 18 off 89.Rangana Herath picked up nine wickets in the match•AFP

Herath and Dilruwan Perera were relentless, even with no uneven bounce available and no exaggerated turn or bounce. Perera, a classical offspinner who has no doosra, used his straighter one superbly from both sides of the wicket, leaving the batsmen unsure about which ones would turn. He beat Azhar with a straighter one and Shehzad on the drive with a flighted offbreak. The batsmen started shuffling further and further across in doubt and umpire Ian Gould gave Shehzad leg-before as he missed an offbreak. Shehzad conferred with Azhar and walked back without reviewing, only to face an incredulous Moin Khan and Waqar Younis in the dressing room, as replays showed the ball would have turned past leg stump.Realising that some runs were dearly needed, Younis Khan drove Perera for four through extra cover first ball, and was way more positive in defence as well as attack than the preceding batsmen.Herath had been taken off after constantly teasing the batsmen with his flight and arm balls, and was brought back ten minutes before lunch. Younis walked out to the second delivery and smothered it. The third one he pushed forward to, playing for spin, but it was the arm ball and slipped through the gate.Misbah-ul-Haq calmly lofted Herath for a straight four off the last ball of that over. Pakistan showed more intent after lunch even as the spinners tried to target the rough outside leg. Both Azhar and Misbah resorted to sweeps, and the latter reviewed umpire Bruce Oxenford’s lbw decision successfully on 8 off Perera, replays showing the batsman had gloved the ball on to pad.A few overs later, Misbah slog-swept Perera for six over midwicket and reverse-swept the next ball for four. The partnership grew to 56, and the calming presence of Misbah seemed to have steadied Pakistan from the tremors of the morning.Sri Lanka struck twice in the space of three balls to deliver bigger jolts to Pakistan. Azhar got his second jaffa of the match from Herath that spun across to take the edge behind on the forward push. Two balls later, Misbah missed a whip off the back foot against Perera, and it was Sri Lanka’s turn to review successfully now for leg-before.Asad Shafiq failed to read Herath’s arm ball again but Sarfraz fought with aggression. Sarfraz came into the Test with a batting average of 18.58 but added fifties in each innings. His approach to spin was in sharp contrast to that of some of his batting colleagues. As the overs remaining kept dwindling, Sarfraz kept walking out, whipping, cutting, driving and sweeping Pakistan’s lead towards 100. Amid all this, he even managed to farm the strike with Mohammad Talha for a while before Herath had his way again. The previous Test between these sides in Sharjah had Pakistan chasing 302 in quick time. This wasn’t as big a pursuit, but it made up on the drama front.

O'Brien, Taylor revive Leicestershire

Stand-in captain Niall O’Brien led the way as Leicestershire staged a spirited fightback in a bid to avoid the follow-on against Surrey at Grace Road

Stand-in captain Niall O’Brien led the way as Leicestershire staged a spirited fightback in a bid to avoid the follow-on against Surrey at Grace Road.Having posted a formidable total of 480, Surrey had the hosts struggling at 146 for 4 but an unbeaten 62 by O’Brien and half-centuries from Dan Redfern and Rob Taylor helped Leicestershire to 303 for seven by the close and needing another 28 runs to make Surrey bat again.Offspinner Gareth Batty ensured the day ended on a high note for Surrey however, claiming two late wickets in two overs for four runs to check Leicestershire’s recovery.Taylor, having made 54 and shared a stand of 99 with O’Brien was bowled by a quicker delivery and in Batty’s next over Jigar Naik fell in similar fashion as the home side slipped from 292 for 5 to 298 for 7.Earlier in the day Steven Davies had hit his best score for Surrey with 174 off 210 balls. It was always going to be a tall order for bottom-of the-table Leicestershire to get themselves back into the game after being battered by the Surrey batsmen. But some wayward bowling from the Surrey pacemen gave the home side the chance to add to the huge boundary count in the game.Even though some early wickets fell the scoreboard ticked along at a good rate with Ned Eckersley making a breezy 40 with eight fours in a stand of 64 with Matt Boyce. But when Boyce was out caught behind off a lifting delivery from Chris Tremlett, Surrey looked in command again. Then Redfern, O’Brien and Taylor gave the home side some hope. Redfern hit 52 with 10 fours before edging Batty to wicket-keeper Gary Wilson and Taylor’s half century contained a six and four other boundaries. With O’Brien still there, Leicestershire will hope they can reach the follow-on target of 331.Resuming at 403 for 8 Surrey added another 77 runs off 22 overs. The main focus was whether Davies could improve his career best score of 192 for Worcestershire against Gloucestershire he posted eight years ago.He certainly looked in the mood to do so, moving quickly from his overnight 147 and past his previous Surrey best of 156.The boundaries continued to flow as well from both Davies and Stuart Meaker in a stand of 108. It was finally broken by Rob Taylor who pinned Davies lbw for 174 off 210 balls. His innings contained 25 fours.Meaker was last man out for 58 off 142 balls when he edged Taylor behind giving the left-arm seamer figures of 4 for 91 in 20.3 overs.

Breese provides another Durham 'fairytale'

Gareth Breese struck the winning runs in what is likely to be his final appearance for the club, earning Durham their fifth major trophy since 2007. It was no surprise that the word “fairytale” cropped up

Alan Gardner21-Sep-2014Ten years ago, in Gareth Breese’s first season with Durham, the youngest first-class county finished bottom of Division Two of the Championship. On Saturday at Lord’s, Breese struck the winning runs in what is likely to be his final appearance for the club, earning Durham their fifth major trophy since 2007. It was no surprise that the word “fairytale” cropped up.Durham’s success has not been a case of waving a magic wand, however. Their resources are more limited than most, part of the reason that Breese will not be staying on. While the team that won Durham’s first piece of silverware, the 2007 FP Trophy, was built around experienced signings such as Michael Di Venuto, Dale Benkenstein and Ottis Gibson, this side featured important contributions from homegrown players such as the captain, Mark Stoneman, England allrounder Ben Stokes and Chris Rushworth.Breese, along with Paul Collingwood and Phil Mustard, played in both games. The 38-year-old Jamaican, who holds a British passport, could not eat his Lord’s lunch due to nerves but showed stomach for the fight when joining Stokes in the middle with Durham seven down and 36 short of victory. His unbeaten 15 followed 3 for 30 with the ball.”He’s been outstanding in his contributions for Durham and for him to go out on a high, hit the winning runs in a Lord’s final – you couldn’t script it any better really,” Stoneman said.Gareth Breese celebrates with the Royal London Cup after what could be his final appearance as a professional•Getty Images

Breese has not retired, despite being released, and is open to offers of a contract elsewhere. Pride in what Durham had achieved was his overriding emotion as he held the Royal London Cup, which had become a handy receptacle for a celebratory rum. “If it’s my last game at this level, then I’ve had a fantastic last game,” he said.”It’s a bit bittersweet. I’m enjoying my cricket, I’d love to play a bit more but circumstances dictate and I’m moving on. It’s just been a fantastic farewell to have another team performance and bring another trophy to the northeast.”To move from being one of the beating sticks of county cricket to having won five trophies in the last seven years, that is what the club is all about … We’ve had some really good Kolpak and overseas players come in over the last few years, like Di Venuto and Benkenstein, who’ve contributed so much to Durham, and we’ve been able to mix that with the academy players we’ve been able to produce. You saw today, Paul Coughlin come in and have a really fantastic game.”I was so nervous sitting in the dressing room, I couldn’t eat my lunch – lunch at Lord’s is fantastic, and not to eat it says enough. I just kept pacing the dressing room and in the back of my mind was ‘Can we pull this off’?'”They could, despite the best efforts of Jeetan Patel and a tenacious Warwickshire side who lost an important toss but fought to keep their hopes of a limited-overs double alive. When Breese attempted to leave what turned out to the final delivery of the match and the ball squirted off the bat to third man for the winning boundary, the boisterous team celebrations, which included a rendition of “Blaydon Races” with the Durham supporters, could begin. It completed their sixth 50-over win in a row as part of a dramatic late-season resurgence, which has seen them win six consecutive games in all competitions. In August, when Durham lost by one wicket to Lancashire, the 2013 champions were second from bottom in Division One; they could end up finishing second, to go with the Royal London title. In the revamped one-day competition Durham only used 13 players, again testament to a tight-knit squad. Stoneman also had praise for Coughlin after his first ever appearance at Lord’s as a replacement for John Hastings, Durham’s overseas signing who had left to take part in the Champions League. Next season, they can expect to see less of Stokes – though his ECB central contract may free up some funds to spend elsewhere – and Breese’s departure will also leave a hole to fill in limited-overs cricket.”It’s going to be tough but when I look a the way we’ve gone this season, if we’ve lost a player someone has come in and performed,” Stoneman said. “There’s definitely strength and depth in the club and some younger players coming through, which is why Durham County Cricket Club came about in the first place. There are a lot of good cricketers in the region, so hopefully that production line can continue.”Durham’s team spirit and sense of the collective was summed up the Man of the Match, Stokes: “We’ve been around each other for a number of years now and we know how everyone plays cricket and everyone’s personality. Everyone fits into the changing room and we’re not just colleagues, we’re mates as well. I think that goes a long way to how successful we’ve been this year.”The celebrations, Stoneman acknowledged, would be at the player’s own expense. “But we’ll not worry too much about that.” Durham, it seems, have a few things that money can’t buy.
