Wasim Akram sees big role for Zaheer Khan

Wasim Akram, former India bowling coach Eric Simons and former India fast bowler TA Sekhar all think Zaheer Khan still has a role to play for India

Even as the whispers have started to get louder over Zaheer Khan’s future in the Indian side, Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan fast bowling great, and former India bowling coach Eric Simons believe the left-arm quick still has a big role to play.In the four Tests since returning to the side in the South Africa tour, Zaheer has taken 16 wickets including a five-for in the second Test against New Zealand. However both South Africa and New Zealand batsmen raised big totals, capitalising on the inconsistency of the Indian bowling which lacked the intensity and importantly a bowling leader.”It is very rare that you make a comeback having played 90 Tests. So it is just not your bowling but also your reputation at stake,” Akram told ESPNcricinfo. “But in the time left before he finally retires, Zaheer has the opportunity to contribute a lot still. Like Imran [Khan] did with myself and Waqar [Younis], Zak can stand at mid-on and mid-off and teach other bowlers skills like reverse swing, have a word with the young fast bowlers when things are not going well.”Shortening his run-up, how and when to use reverse swing, how to use angles and yorkers were some of the things Akram said Imran taught him during his formative years. “Talking, explaining fast bowling is an art. Just because one is a fast bowler does not always mean he can teach easily to others. So the more Zaheer talks to the others, he will learn and teach more. I used to just ask Imran ” for the first three years. And that is how I learned.”Akram cited the example of the Wellington Test last week where Ishant Sharma went wicketless in the second innings – a match that Brendon McCullum turned on its head with a triple-century. “Dhoni cannot speak from behind the wickets. Ishant no doubt bowled well during the series, but no wicket for 160-odd runs it means he had some psychological issues. So it is for Zak to take the initiative to figure out what Ishant’s plan was and talk to him accordingly. If the pitch is flat, wickets are not coming, then how does one stop the runs are things that have to be spoken about. Other than taking wickets Zaheer’s responsibility should help make one or two good fast bowlers before he exits cricket.”Rahul Dravid, former India captain, told ESPNcricinfo earlier this week Zaheer’s struggles were evident in both South Africa and New Zealand and the bowler needed to ask himself some tough questions. “I would hate to see Zaheer Khan end his career bowling 120-125 kph and limp away from international cricket,” Dravid said. However Simons, who was the bowling coach when fellow South African Gary Kirsten was the Indian coach, pointed out that speed has never really been Zaheer’s strength. “Zaheer is not a very physical bowler,” Simons said. “Zaheer is lot more tactical in his approach, lot more skillful in the sense he has relied more on the swinging the ball and using the variations to be successful. And he will just end up relying more and more on those skills as time goes along.”Simons also said that India could not afford to carry a fast-bowling pack who were more medium than fast. “The important thing in any bowling attack is the balance so you can’t have three or four guys just bowling at 120-125 kph and try and swing the ball around. If he (Zaheer) is used more to complement the other chaps, who are bowling quicker then he becomes more effective. That will naturally become his role in future. Even Richard Hadlee became very effective in such a role.”Simons is clear that the best way India can extract the best out of Zaheer was by playing him not as a “strike” bowler but as a “skillful” bowler. “The one thing about Zak is he is a person thrives on lots of bowling. I remember when he came to South Africa he had not bowled as much as he had perhaps in the past. I certainly sensed he was slow to get his rhythm. He needs to be used in a manner that allows him to be the skillful bowler that he is; may be not as the strike bowler. May be he bowls a few overs upfront with the new ball while it is swinging because he is one of the best exponents of that art and then later on in the game where he can bring to the fore the different variations he has.”Simons admitted that considering Zaheer is now 35 he cannot escape such critical assessment especially since he is a fast bowler. “You can’t play him too far in the future. You have to be realistic.”Although Zaheer had worked hard to get back to fitness last year Dravid said that he was not entirely confident about him featuring during the five-Test series in England later this summer. TA Sekhar, former India fast bowler and selector, however pointed out that Zaheer was crucial for the development of the inexperienced Indian bowling attack.”I would rather play Zaheer abroad even if he has become slower,” Sekhar said. “He is one guy who knows when to bowl fast and when to bowl within himself. 124kph you read and wonder what is he doing. But that is not his real speed. Perhaps he is trying to conserve his energy. He is also using a lot of change of pace now. So he deserves to there especially now when the bowling group is developing.”

Crowe: Australia don’t have the spin game for this tournament

If ever proof was needed that Pakistan are world cricket’s most mercurial side, take this match as exhibit A. Bilawal Bhatti’s first over cost 30 runs, Pakistan dropped two catches in three balls, they conceded an 18-ball half-century to Glenn Maxwell and in their own innings stumbled to 25 for 2 in their fifth over. Oh, and they won. Comfortably, in the end. So relaxed was Mohammad Hafeez by the end that he trusted Bhatti with the final over, with Australia needing 23. They managed six. This really was a split personality of a game. The fielding from both sides was poor, as was some of the bowling. But the striking from Umar Akmal and Maxwell was breathtaking, and a couple of wonderful overs from two of Pakistan’s spinners, Zulfiqar Babar and Saeed Ajmal, meant more than Bhatti’s dirty 30-run over. Perhaps the most important feature of the match was the lopsided nature of Australia’s scorecard; nobody but Maxwell and Aaron Finch reached double figures.Smart stats

Umar Akmal’s 94 is the second-highest score by a Pakistan batsman in Twenty20 internationals. Ahmed Shehzad had made an unbeaten 98 against Zimbabwe in August last year.

In his last ten T20I innings, Umar has scored 337 runs at an average of 42.12 and a strike rate of 138.68, the best among Pakistan batsmen during this period.

Glenn Maxwell got to his half-century in 18 balls, which is the fourth-fastest in Twenty20 internationals. Only Yuvraj Singh, Paul Stirling and Stephan Myburgh have scored a half-century in fewer balls.

Maxwell’s strike rate of 224.24 is the fourth-highest for an Australian batsman who’s faced at least 25 balls in an innings.

The No. 4 batsmen from both teams were the top-scorers, and totalled 168 runs in the match, the highest by No. 4 batsmen in a T20I; the previous-highest was 164, by Ricky Ponting (98 not out) and Scott Styris (66) in the first ever T20I, in 2005.

Bilawal Bhatti went for 30 runs in the eighth over of the innings, the fourth-most expensive over in Twenty20 internationals. Stuart Broad (36 v India, 2007), Izatullah Dawlatzai (32 v England, 2012) and Wayne Parnell (32 v England, 2012) are the only bowlers to concede more runs in an over.

And yet while they were at the crease together, Australia rocketed into favouritism. Chasing 192, they had come together at 8 for 2 at the end of the first over, after Babar’s quicker ball rattled David Warner’s stumps and his turner caught the edge of Shane Watson’s bat on the way through to Kamran Akmal. But from there, Maxwell and Finch lifted Australia to 126 for 2 in the 12th over, a position from which they could have and should have won.Had Maxwell stayed there they would have. As he struck six after six with conventional strokeplay, it was hard to work out why he had tried to reverse-sweep Hafeez from the first ball of his innings. Nerves, perhaps. But when he stood still and played the ball on its merits, he was almost impossible to stop. He clubbed Hafeez over midwicket and square leg for two sixes in an over and struck another as Shahid Afridi leaked 15 in his first over.Afridi seemed Scrooge-like compared to Bhatti, who was thumped for two consecutive sixes that brought Maxwell his half-century, the equal fastest in a T20 international by an Australia player. The record was set by David Warner, who struck an 18-ball fifty against West Indies in 2009-10 at the SCG, where the Arizona Diamondbacks and the LA Dodgers are playing Major League Baseball this week. Some of Maxwell’s strikes belonged there. He was put down on 70 by Ajmal in the deep – two balls earlier Kamran had failed to glove Finch’s edge behind off Ajmal’s doosra – but on 74 Maxwell fell when he picked out deep midwicket off the bowling of Afridi. And magically, the runs dried up. The rest of the Australians struggled to force the pace against Pakistan’s spin; George Bailey was bowled by Afridi for 4 off nine balls and after Brad Hodge was well caught in the deep by Ajmal off Umar Gul, Ajmal got rid of the other main danger, Finch.Australia needed 31 off the final three overs when Ajmal was given his last over, and it was a brilliant one. Finch, settled but still a little scratchy, was bowled by an Ajmal straight ball for 65 off 54 balls, and the over brought one run and one wicket. And, more or less, one Pakistan victory. Because 30 off two overs was too much for Australia’s lower order; Gul and Bhatti picked up wickets and there was a run out, and Australia were bowled out from the last ball for 175.It meant that Umar Akmal’s batting had not been in vain. That Pakistan reached 191 for 5 was a remarkable effort given that they were struggling at 25 for 2 in the fifth over. But the Akmal brothers combined to give Bailey a headache for the next three quarters of an hour. They scored at 11.29 during their 96-run partnership and although Kamran has an excellent record against Australia it was Umar who really did the damage this time. Powerful through and over midwicket, especially during an 18-run over from part-time spinner Finch, who was twice dispatched dismissively over deep midwicket, Umar was also able to rocket the ball down the ground straight back past the bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile.Kamran struck four fours during his run-a-ball 31 but the partnership ended when he tried to lift a cut over deep point off Coulter-Nile but was well taken by Warner running around on the boundary. Coulter-Nile picked up a second wicket when he yorked Sohaib Maqsood for 5, but Umar remained at the crease and seemed destined to become the first Pakistan batsman to reach a century in a Twenty20 international. That was not to be. In the final over of the innings, on 94 from 53 balls, he tried to clear the long-on boundary off Mitchell Starc and was caught in the deep by Maxwell. A quick unbeaten 20 from Afridi helped Pakistan to 191 for 5, but the Australians were left wondering what could have been had they been a little less sloppy in the field.Umar had been dropped on 22 when he lifted Coulter-Nile to deep square leg and Brad Hogg put down a catch that was coming to him at pace, but should have been taken comfortably. Afridi was also put down by Hodge at point and Kamran was grassed by Doug Bollinger at short fine leg, although the umpire called a no-ball against the bowler Shane Watson in any case.Bollinger’s first international for two and a half years had started more promisingly – he struck in the second over of the match when Ahmed Shehzad top-edged a pull and was caught by Bollinger himself. When Hafeez played on off Watson in the fifth over, Australia could dream of a small chase. In their dreams.

Sou eu o maior culpado.

É difícil fazer gol no Bahia, a exemplo do Corinthians.

Netherlands humiliate England

Lord’s 2009 was close. Chittagong in 2014 was a thrashing. For the second time in T20, Netherlands humbled England

The Report by George Dobell31-Mar-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:31

England ‘flipped’ to new low by Bukhari

There is a great deal of competition for the lowest point in the history of English cricket. They have been defeated by Ireland and Netherlands, bowled out by a chicken farmer in Zimbabwe and whitewashed by India, West Indies and Australia. They were even knocked out of the World Cup they hosted in 1999 before the theme song was released. But defeat at the hands of Netherlands – the second time they have lost to them in two meetings following the result in the 2009 World T20 at Lord’s – in Chittagong ranks among the worst of England’s defeats. In a winter stuffed with setbacks and disappointment, England left the most ignominious moment until last. The term double-dutch has rarely seemed so appropriate. It is a defeat that might also prove a fatal blow for Ashley Giles’ hopes of gaining the England coaching job. While those at the ECB charged with appointing the next coach might have been expected to take a sympathetic view towards some modest results in light of the transitional phase in which the team find themselves, it may prove harder to overlook a defeat at the hands of Netherlands: a team that were beaten by Zimbabwe early in the tournament; a team that were bowled out for 39 by Sri Lanka a few days ago; a team that recently lost their ODI status.Smart Stats

Netherlands have become the only Associate team to beat a Test team twice in T20 internationals. Their first win against England was in the only other T20I these teams have played, at Lord’s in the 2009 World T20.

England’s total in this match equalled their second lowest score in T20Is. West Indies had also bowled them out for 88 at The Oval in 2011. England’s lowest score in T20Is is 80, by India in the 2012 World T20.

This was Netherlands’ fourth win when batting first in 14 games. They have a better record batting second – 11 wins in 15 matches.

The 45-run defeat was England’s sixth worst in terms of runs. Their worst was against India in the last World T20, when they lost by 90.

The England batsmen scored only three boundaries, the fewest they have hit in a T20I.

Those same men charged with appointing the coach might also like to reflect on the wisdom of dispensing with Kevin Pietersen weeks before the tournament, too. Whether he is disruptive or not in the dressing room – and the evidence of those who shared it with him is mixed – there is no doubt that, without him, England are a weaker team on the pitch. This was a wretched performance. While Netherlands hit three boundaries in the first over of the game, England managed only four in their entire innings. While Holland took 47 off their six Powerplay overs, England managed only 26 for the loss of three wickets off theirs; their second lowest in T20 history. Their final total – a pathetic effort of 88 – was the lowest ever recorded by Full Member nation against an Associate. It summed up England’s awful performance that defeat was sealed by a shambolic run-out. Had an unknowing spectator sauntered into the ground, they could have been forgiven for concluding that England was the Associate nation and Netherlands were the Test regulars. But it is harsh to focus on England’s shortcomings when Netherlands performance warrants praise. Certainly their bowling – intelligent, disciplined and calm – was highly impressive and their fielding calm and assured. They deserve huge plaudits for defending a target that looked some way below par, albeit on a pitch that rendered stroke-making difficult.Timm van der Gugten bowled with pace and control in taking the key wicket of Eoin Morgan, falling to an old weakness and edging one pushed wide of his off stump, while Mudassar Bukhari’s control and variations preyed on an England batting line-up chronically lacking in confidence on a sluggish surface. Logan van Beek also claimed three wickets in two overs by virtue simply of maintaining and decent line and length and preying on England’s increasing panic. However, the key difference was the composure of Netherlands compared to England. While the Dutch played to the conditions, England attempted to play as if on a quicker surface. With the ball not coming on to the bat as England might have liked, the batsmen were encouraged to hit the ball in the air and presented a succession of chances to Netherland’s grateful, and sharp fielders. Only three men made double-figures and none made more than 18.Earlier, it seemed as if England had clawed Netherlands back to a manageable total after a bright start. Stephan Myburgh and Wesley Barresi put on 50 for the second wicket in 43 balls, with Stephen Parry, playing in place of the much-derided Jade Dernbach, punished for 23 off his two overs. The fielding lapses that have marred England’s winter were prevalent once again. Michael Lumb, mistiming his leap, was unable to cling on to a pull stroke by Barresi on 8 off Parry’s first delivery – a long-hop – and instead of catching it, tipped the ball for six. Tom Cooper, on 4, was badly dropped by Alex Hales, while Peter Borren might have been run-out had Buttler not dislodged the bails with his elbow before collecting the ball. But, having made 84 from the first 11 overs, Netherlands scored only 49 from their final nine as Ravi Bopara, in particular, bowled with excellent control and variation. Only 27 came from the final five overs and it seemed they had squandered their fine platform. It proved to be more than enough, though. England’s run-chase never gained any momentum. Nobody took responsibility for their chase, no-one had the composure for the job at hand. Complacency is one potential excuse, but how a team that has been thrashed all winter can be find room for complacency is hard to say.Either way, while the result may prove a hammer blow to Giles’ chances of gaining the England job his counterpart, Anton Roux, must have given himself an excellent chance of gaining the Netherlands job on a full time basis.

Nunca me preocupei realmente com o próximo passo.

Mignon du Preez, the South Africa captain, has called her side’s run to the Women’s World T20 semi-finals a “stepping stone” for women’s cricket in her country. South Africa stunned favoured New Zealand in the group stage to make the semi-finals for the first time ahead of Suzie Bates’ team with a better net run-rate. Although they went down tamely to England in the semi-final, du Preez was proud of her side for their achievement.”Coming into this we were definitely underdogs. I think we have done exceptionally well and over the past few weeks the cricket that we have played, we have shown a lot of character and credit to the team,” du Preez said. “I am very proud of what we have done and I think this is like the stepping stone for women’s cricket in South Africa. It is nice to give something back to people who have been behind us all the way, whether you are winning or losing. I think this is going to open up the doors and be the start of great things for women’s cricket in South Africa.”South Africa lost only to Australia in Group A and beat New Zealand, Pakistan and Ireland. Along the way, they took inspiration from West Indies Women’s motto of ‘Moving in faith’ and said a prayer in the team huddle after their tournament ended against England this evening.West Indies have been probably the most improved side in women’s cricket in recent years, making the final of the World Cup in 2013 and the semi-final of this event. When asked if South Africa could be the new West Indies of women’s cricket, du Preez said she would not mind if her side was called that, as she admired Merissa Aguilleira’s side a lot. “They have come a long way over the last few years and they have played really good cricket,” she said. “They have played together as a team. Individuals do perform but they play really hard as a team. They are also underdogs but they play with a never-say-die attitude which I admire.”Du Preez did not think it was only England and Australia dominating women’s cricket and said South Africa’s run to the knockouts in this tournament proved that other sides were rapidly coming up the ranks. She pointed to the professionalisation of English women’s cricket and hoped that other countries would be able to do the same.
