Liverpool backed to sign Calvin Ramsay

Former Scotland and Premier League manager Alex McLeish believes Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsay would pick Liverpool over Leeds United in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Ramsay linked with Liverpool move

The Reds have been linked with a move for the 18-year-old in recent times, following a string of impressive performances for Aberdeen, with the reliable Paul Joyce naming him as a target.

Ramsay has made 22 Scottish Premiership appearances this season and is someone who is in the ‘elite upper bracket’ of young right-backs, according to Dons chairman Dave Cormack.

Leeds could rival Liverpool for the Scot’s signature this summer, as he potentially moves south of the border.

The Latest: McLeish gives his verdict

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish claimed his compatriot would surely opt for a move to Anfield over Elland Road, given the differing fortunes of both clubs currently:

“I would imagine, if I was in that position right now, I want to go to Liverpool.

“Because of the magnitude of the club, because of the lack of any chance of relegation. Even though I’d be an understudy to Trent Alexander-Arnold for a couple of years, I’ll get in and out.

“You’ve got a timeframe to develop yourself. Then if you end up cutting it at Liverpool, you’ve almost won the World Cup, haven’t you?

“I would expect a young player to be thinking that. Not thinking: ‘Well, Leeds are on the verge of relegation in the Championship. Maybe I’ll play more games in there.’

“That is a blooming hard league, the Championship. Any team can win on any given day. Even the bottom teams can beat the top teams. If Liverpool and Leeds are in for him, I would think he’d, all day long, choose Liverpool.”

The Verdict: Perfect Trent deputy

While Trent Alexander-Arnold clearly isn’t going to be ousted any time soon at Liverpool, Ramsay could come in as a hugely exciting backup option, getting opportunities in the domestic cups.

With Neco Williams possibly moving on, that space in the squad could open up for the Aberdeen man and he could then be loaned out immediately, in order to continue his growth.

Ramsay is clearly a special talent, and with Liverpool always planning for the long-term future, he is someone who should be viewed as a shrewd summer signing.

Captaincy decision not in my hands – Ponting

The next five days could determine Ricky Ponting’s future but the decision over whether he stays as captain is ultimately out of his hands

The next five days could determine Ricky Ponting’s future but the decision over whether he stays as captain is ultimately out of his hands. Australia have to prevent England from winning the third Test in Perth to retain any hope of regaining the Ashes and save Ponting from becoming Australia’s first three-time loser of the urn in 120 years. At a time of so many “what ifs” for the hosts, Ponting is trying not to peer towards the horizon, but that is impossible in his team’s current state. He is realistic enough to know that his future could be decided as soon as the end of this match.”Probably not a decision for me to make,” Ponting said when asked if he would still be captain if Australia lost the Ashes. “I don’t pick myself as captain so, look, in all honestly, I haven’t thought about that at all.”The decision’s completely out of my hands. At the end of the day, I’ll do my best to make sure we’re on a winning end this week and I’ll do my best as a player to make sure I score runs and lead the team the best way possible. Then the powers that be will make those decisions I guess at the end of the series, or after this Test match.”If Ponting was in peak batting form the questions over his future would hold less substance, but he has struggled to 70 runs in this series and has not had an impact on the campaign. Ponting is both the game’s most successful captain, with 47 wins in 75 matches, and the ruler of a unit that has lost most of its powers with the departure of key personnel over the past four years.Three new faces have come into the squad for this game and Ponting is in a situation where he can’t trust his bowling attack or rely on his batsmen for big runs. He remains the only great player in Australia’s side, but he will be 36 on Monday and is in a battle to hang on.There have been no hundreds in his last eight Tests and he will walk out at the WACA with the memories of receiving a tenderised left elbow from a Kemar Roach short ball in the game here last year. That bruise forced his first retired hurt and he has been struggling for sustained form and fluency ever since. After the innings defeat in Adelaide, Ponting had five days off and tried not to think about the series. Compartmentalisation is a key attribute for any leader, but there would be no way Ponting could have escaped from all the disruptions and criticism of himself and his team. He remains relaxed in public but is a man under extreme pressure.”I know a lot of our success revolves around how well our batting does at the top of the order and my input in the series so far hasn’t been what it’s needed to be for us to win games,” he said. “So purely and simply I need to stand up, I need to score runs and we need to play better cricket than we have in the last two Test matches.”Australia last lost a home Ashes series in the depressing summer of 1986-87 and this campaign is already evoking similar feelings among the home supporters. The bowlers have taken only 16 wickets in the opening two matches and England’s batsmen have dominated in gaining a 1-0 series advantage. One thing in Australia’s favour is that the green WACA pitch is looking like providing a result.”Obviously that has to be a positive one for us or it’s game, set and match,” he said. “We are priming ourselves to play our best game so far in the series and we know we have to do it by a long way if we want to win the game.”

Teams hope for respite from rain

ESPNcricinfo previews the second ODI between Sri Lanka and West Indies at the SSC

West Indies will welcome their return to form•AFP

Big PictureThe spectre of rain looms large on the ongoing ODI series even though it had been rescheduled to the new year to avoid exactly that. The spate of inconclusive contests continued with the first ODI being abandoned due to rain at the SSC but not without the visitors again making a strong impression. West Indies had not played an ODI since the home series against South Africa in May and June last year but two of their players, one who had missed that series and another who had been dropped from the Test series against Sri Lanka, struck form to boost the visitors in the lead-up to the World Cup. Adrian Barath sizzled with a maiden ODI ton while Ramnaresh Sarwan marked his return to the national fold with 75 in a 162-run stand with his centurion partner.Sri Lanka’s batting was untested, thanks to the rain, but Lasith Malinga and Muttiah Muralitharan, their bowling mainstays, were back into ODI groove. Nuwan Kulasekara served his role of the back-up seamer with an economical spell though Ajantha Mendis went for runs – could it prompt the team to try out Rangana Herath? Left with just two games prior to the World Cup, barring the warm-ups, now is the time for the teams to test out their respective XVs. But beware the rain, for there’s more forecast in Colombo on Thursday.Form guide (Last five completed games)
Sri Lanka: LWWWW
West Indies: LLLLLPlayers to watch out for …Carlton Baugh: He reminds you of David Williams with his diminutive stature, and has been picked in the West Indies squad for the World Cup ahead of the more experienced Denesh Ramdin. Despite having made his debut in international cricket more than seven years ago, Baugh has been unable to cement his place as a regular largely due to his inconsistency with the bat. He made a half-century in the Test series against Sri Lanka but an average of 14.86 in ODIs doesn’t really promise much.Chamara Kapugedera: Inconsistency has been his problem, too. His reputation as a big hitter and a potential game-changer down the order has ensured his place in Sri Lanka’s starting XIs for the last three years but his results have been mixed. Kapugedera has shuffled positions in the middle order and has his share of attacking cameos but, ahead of the World Cup, would want a better workout.Team newsWest Indies have opener Devon Smith in their ranks, but he may again have to sit out. Shivnarine Chanderpaul batted at No.6 but his style of play is better suited at the top of the order while Dwayne Bravo, who missed the first game due to a niggle, has to be brought back at some stage. “He has taken part in the training session fully and he has done everything that has been asked of him. He comes into the reckoning for Thursday’s match,” coach Ottis Gibson said of Bravo’s chances.West Indies (probable): 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Adrian Barath, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 5 Darren Bravo, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Kieron Pollard, 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Carlton Baugh, 10 Nikita Miller, 11 Kemar Roach.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Mahela Jayawardene, 4 Kumar Sangakkara, 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Chamara Kapugedera, 8 Rangana Herath, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.Stats and trivia The last time a West Indian spinner bagged a five-for in ODIs was in 2003 – Chris Gayle against Australia at St George’s. Adrian Barath’s century was the first by a West Indies batsman against Sri Lanka in ODIs after Brian Lara in 2003.The first ODI was the third abandoned 50-over game between Sri Lanka and West Indies. Quotes”The partnership was fantastic for us and that is the kind of approach we will need in the future going forward – with our senior players guiding our younger players. It was great to see. In tough situations we need them to get us to match-winning totals and ultimately win matches for us.”

Dhoni asks for positive intent from batsmen

MS Dhoni says India’s batsmen need to improve their shot selection but must also look to score quickly in the second ODI against South Africa at the Wanderers

Sidharth Monga in Johannesburg14-Jan-2011India find themselves caught in an ODI series that is neither here nor there. This is no preparation for the World Cup by any stretch of the imagination, for the surfaces, the overhead conditions, the pressure, will be completely different in February and March in India. Still, everything is going to be looked at with an eye on the World Cup. If, for example, one of the younger ODI specialist batsmen struggles against the bouncing ball, the team is not likely to fret too much. The conditions, it will be said, will be different in the subcontinent. The series is not even a chance for the final 11 or 12 players who will be expected to feature in the World Cup to play together; Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Praveen Kumar are already back in India, nursing injuries. Also, winning is looking difficult, especially if even one of the bowlers has an off day, as Ashish Nehra did in the first ODI, in Durban. That leaves the batsmen with a lot to do, and the younger lot is not going to find it easy on bouncy pitches against an attack featuring Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel. The Wanderers game on Saturday will be India’s last before the final World Cup squad is announced, which should get rid of any distraction there might be because of the ICC tournament. MS Dhoni, though, wants his side to forget the tournament even before that, saying the second ODI would not have any bearing on who gets picked for the World Cup. “I don’t think it is just one performance that will matter,” he said. “The guys who have worked hard throughout the year, and have delivered in the last one to one-and-a-half years will get a chance. It will be wrong if you try to select the team on the basis of one performance. We will try to select the best XI [in South Africa].”That seems to be the best way to go: let the selectors do their job in India, let us do our job of trying our best to win the series here. To do that, India will have to quickly adjust to the conditions here in South Africa. If Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh don’t do well, the middle order looks inexperienced despite the number of matches they have played between them.Dhoni called for better shot selection, but not at the expense of scoring runs at a good pace. “Being selective is important, but positive intent is too because you can’t look to [just] survive. There will be something for the fast bowlers initially, especially if you are batting second, but you need to score runs and boundaries off the bad deliveries because that takes the pressure off you. If you are scoring at 2.5 an over, at the end of the day, you are mounting pressure on yourself.”With overcast conditions predicted for Saturday’s match, and perhaps rain interruptions too, the bowlers will look for a better showing than in Durban. The job will only become tougher for the batsmen, with more seam movement expected than in Durban, especially if Dhoni keeps up with his form at the toss, which would mean India will be batting under the lights again.”What we have told ourselves is that the toss is one thing beyond our control. Irrespective of what happens at the toss, we shouldn’t really let it have any impact on ourselves because what is important is to give our 100% on the field, and if you are concentrating too hard on the toss, you are not giving your 100% in a way.”Dhoni said the right mindset will be the key to whether India can make a comeback from yet another slow start to a series. “You lose games, you win games. What is important is to have the same mindset throughout the series. It will be very important to start afresh because whatever has happened has happened. You have to start from scratch, we just need to play to our potential.”Duncan Fletcher, South Africa’s batting consultant, spoke of the need for his side to stay alert to the kind of comeback India staged in Durban after they were outclassed in the Centurion Test. However, both the sides know, with the difference in quality between India’s Test and one-day sides, Wanderers is not as likely to see a comeback as Kingsmead was.

'Not a must-win game' – Shakib

Ireland’s victory over England has thrown Group B wide open, but the match between Bangladesh and West Indies in Mirpur is still a crucial one, and both captains think they can win

Sidharth Monga in Mirpur03-Mar-2011Months before the World Cup started, when the groups were drawn up, instinctively one match was looked upon as the potential knockout before the knockouts. That match is upon us. Bangladesh, ranked higher than West Indies in the ICC one-day rankings, and not undeservingly so looking at the results over the last year or two, meet West Indies at home. However, Ireland and England have jumbled up the equations a bit, and this match is not as simple as a winners-go-to-quarters affair. That doesn’t make the game any less importance though. The team that loses this one will have to travel a long road back into contention. The captains of the sides sought to not talk the game up.”To me nothing has changed,” Darren Sammy said of the upset that Ireland pulled off on Wednesday night to become one of the outside contenders themselves. “Every team in this tournament came out to give a good account of themselves. For me every match is a very important match. We have played two games, we focused on each team on the day we played. Now we focus on Bangladesh, and are looking to go out there and execute whatever plans we have in stock.”Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, said this was not their last chance. “Obviously we want to go to the next round,” Shakib said. “It is not as if we to win tomorrow because we will have three more matches, but a win will surely take us a step forward.”Ireland’s win over England has thrown the group wide open, but Bangladesh do not want to think too far ahead at the moment. “I don’t know how the Ireland game will benefit us,” Shakib said. “It will do so only if we beat England too.”Shakib Al Hasan said Bangladesh’s win in the West Indies in 2009 would give them confidence•Associated Press

Coming back to Friday’s game, both the captains said they could win, the rider being if their sides played as well as they are capable of. “If we play well West Indies are definitely beatable,” Shakib said. Bangladesh swept a two-match Test series and a three-match one-day series in the West Indies in July 2009, but Shakib said he realised that was not a full-strength squad (several West Indies players had skipped the series due to a feud with the board over contracts). “That team did not have some senior players,” he said. “They have all gained in experience, and with the return of Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, they are a better side now.”But in the back of our minds we will always know that we have beaten them at their home. We will not go onto the back foot even before the start. It is our home and we have so much support. If we consider that, I think the advantage they think they have because of the return of their seniors will be neutralised.”Sammy was expectedly asked about his side being ranked lower than Bangladesh. “Cricket is played on the day,” he said. “You saw what happened on Wednesday night. England scored 327, Ireland chased it down. You can say Bangladesh are ranked higher than us, but we have to go out and play to the best of our ability. We won’t be taking them lightly, but at the end of the day, they are beatable; we have done it before.”Playing to the best of their ability seemed to both captains’ refrain of the day, and if their sides heed their call, it will be some game.
