Frustration lingers at new one-day format

If you think watching Australia’s new domestic split-innings one-dayers will be strange, imagine how the players feel

If you think watching Australia’s new domestic split-innings one-dayers will be odd, imagine how the players feel. The 45-over competition begins next Wednesday and some players, particularly those from Victoria and South Australia who have been at the Champions League, have not so much as played a practice match. It’s in this strange environment that men on the fringe of Australia’s ODI side must impress if they are to win a place in the World Cup squad, which is chosen in December. When the concept was being developed, 78% of players rejected the idea and less than a week from the first game, there is still some frustration lingering among the players.”It is [frustrating], to be honest,” the Western Australia batsman Adam Voges told ESPNcricinfo this week. “I was one of the players who voted against it when the surveys came around but they say it’s here to stay. It is a little bit frustrating from that point of view. Unfortunately there’s not a lot we can do about it, so we’ll get on with it and we play the Vics here on Friday and that will be our first taste of it.”While some of the Western Australians have trialed the format during a pre-season camp in Malaysia, Voges had not yet returned from his county commitments. He is one of a number of players who will be in contention for a World Cup place without being an automatic selection and he must now aim to outperform his batting rivals in an unfamiliar game.”There’s plenty of guys around Australia who are hoping to be in that World Cup squad,” Voges said. “It’s not a disadvantage to anyone, because we’re all playing that format. It just would have been nice to continue playing that [50-over] format up until the World Cup, but we can see Cricket Australia’s point of view too.”That point of view is that the fans will enjoy 45-over games in which each team’s innings is split into two sections of 20 and 25 overs. Powerplays have been abolished, any one bowler can send down a maximum of 12 overs and teams can use 12 players, though only 11 may bat and 11 may bowl.As a result, players like Voges will only have a chance to prove their 50-over form before World Cup selection if they are called up for three ODIs against India in October or three against Sri Lanka in early November. South Australia’s Callum Ferguson, who has recently made his comeback from a knee reconstruction, is in the same boat.”That might make it a little bit more difficult preparing for the World Cup,” Ferguson said of the new format. However, he knows that should he make the cut for Australia’s title defence, there will be opportunities in the one-day international arena when Australia host England for seven ODIs after the Ashes.”If I did happen to make my way in to that World Cup squad, hopefully I’d be able to get some 50-over cricket somewhere else leading in to that tournament,” Ferguson said. “But any cricket is good cricket, in my eyes.”The Victoria batsman David Hussey could be competing with Voges and Ferguson for a place at what would be his first World Cup. Although he has not played an ODI since August last year, Hussey is philosophical about the changes and hopes the selectors will consider his strong 50-over history at domestic level.”Hopefully playing a bit of one-day cricket before and my record from years gone past hopefully holds me in good stead for World Cup selection,” Hussey said. “It’s a new format, it’s what the public wants. It’s definitely in place for this year and I’m pretty sure Cricket Australia want to keep it going for a few years yet to come.”Cricket Australia has not ruled out 50-over practice matches for players on the fringe of the ODI outfit ahead of World Cup selection. However, there are unlikely to be many surprises when the selectors make their decision and the regular limited-overs players still have 13 one-day internationals ahead of them before their title defence kicks off in February.”We’re confident that people [already] playing one-day international cricket are going to be the core of the group that defends the World Cup,” Cricket Australia’s spokesman Peter Young said. “But people showing good form in this [split-innings] format are going to be doing their causes good.”The National One-Day Cup – as yet there is no naming-rights sponsor – kicks off on Wednesday when Queensland host Tasmania at the Gabba. Other rule changes include a new ball being used from each end at the start of an innings, with no replacement new balls to be taken as in ODIs.

Injured Bollinger faces tight race for Ashes

Doug Bollinger will have only one match to prove his fitness ahead of the first Ashes Test after Cricket Australia confirmed he won’t start bowling again until next week

Doug Bollinger will have only one match to prove his fitness ahead of the first Ashes Test after Cricket Australia confirmed he won’t start bowling again until next week. Bollinger suffered a stomach muscle strain during the first Test in India, following a controversial preparation that involved him playing Twenty20 instead of first-class cricket. He arrived in India two days before the first Test, having been told by Cricket Australia to stay in South Africa until his Champions League Twenty20 campaign ended. The team physio Alex Kountouris said Bollinger was now expected to make his comeback in a Sheffield Shield game for New South Wales starting only eight days before the Ashes begins.”On returning to Australia, he had scans that have cleared him of any significant muscle injury,” Kountouris said. “As such he will commence bowling next week and is likely to be available for selection for the Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield game for New South Wales against Tasmania starting November 17.”The Blues have a Sheffield Shield match starting this Sunday and another beginning on November 10, but Bollinger is not expected to be rushed back for either of those games. However, Simon Katich, who has been recovering from a thumb injury, should be available for the second of those fixtures, which will give him two matches before the Gabba Tests.”Simon Katich injured a thumb ligament prior to the first Test in India,” Kountouris said. “Since returning home, he has seen a specialist who advised him take a short break from batting and then return to training. As such, he has not batted since returning from India but will do so next week.”The fast bowler Ryan Harris could also be in the mix for the Brisbane Test, having made what Kountouris called “good progress” from the knee surgery he had in July. Harris had been hoping to make his comeback for Queensland at the start of the summer, but is now expected to play a Futures League game next week and, provided he suffers no setbacks, he should play one or two Sheffield Shield matches before the Ashes.

São Bento anuncia contratação de três jogadores para temporada

MatériaMais Notícias

O São Bento encerrou sua participação no Campeonato Paulista, e com isso diretoria foca no mercado. O clube apresentou nesta quarta-feira três reforços para temporada: o meia-atacante Zé Ricardo, artilheiro do Mirassol no Campeonato Brasileiro Série B, o atacante Walterson, e o meio-campista Alaor.

WBA: Predicted XI & injury news v Reading

Today sees West Bromwich Albion take on Reading in both teams’ penultimate match of the regular Championship season.

To be frank, neither team has anything much to play for, with Reading now mathematically safe and West Brom nowhere near the play-off places.

However, having had his future cleared up, Baggies manager Steve Bruce will not see it that way and will instead be looking for some inspired performances from his players, who will be looking to build some momentum to take into next season.

In terms of injuries, Conor Townsend is a doubt for today, but luckily it is not through injury, with the 29-year-old on standby to attend the birth of his child, which is due any day now.

According to Bruce, Albion academy graduate Zac Ashworth will be in the squad, with the 19-year-old likely to take Townsend’s place, as per West Brom News.

Baggies fans will be glad to know that there are no new injury concerns heading into the match against Paul Ince’s side.

With the latest news in mind, here is how we at Football Fan Cast expect West Bromwich Albion to line up against Reading today.

West Brom XI – Button; Ajayi, O’Shea, Clarke; Reach, Livermore, Molumby, Ashworth; Gardner-Hickman; Carroll, Grant

We expect the team to line-up in a 3-4-1-2 formation.

Our prediction sees just one change from the side which started against Coventry City last time out, with 19-year-old academy graduate Ashworth – who has been dubbed “excellent” by Joe Chapman – coming in for the “dependable” Townsend, in the words of Kieran Doody.

With nothing to play for in these last two games, Bruce can afford to give youth prospects like Ashworth an opportunity to assert himself in the Baggies’ first-team.

Up top, Andy Carroll will be hoping to make the manager rue the decision over his contract renewal if he is to start today, with the 33-year-old set to be released at the end of the season after it was reported by The Athletic that Bruce would not offer him a new contract.

QPR: James Rowberry in contention for managerial vacancy

Newport County boss James Rowberry is said to have emerged as the top contender to take over the managerial vacancy at QPR, according to a report published by Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Warburton’s departure

Rangers have recently confirmed that Mark Warburton will be leaving the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium at the end of the season when his contract expires, following a disappointing season in the Championship, having missed out on a place in the play-offs.

The west London outfit are now said to be looking at potential candidates to replace the 59-year-old in a bid to aim for the top six next campaign, and after a new update, it seems as though the hierarchy may have already found the man that they have been searching for.

The Latest: Rangers identify Rowberry

A QPR source has revealed to Football Insider that the club want to appoint a head coach rather than a manager, and firmly believe that Rowberry ‘fits the bill’ of the profile that they want to take over the reins.

The Welshman is said to be ‘highly regarded’ within the football circles, after becoming one of the youngest ever coaches to achieve his pro licence through UEFA’s top qualification at the age of just 29.

He even held coaching courses for the likes of Marcel Desailly, David Ginola, Patrick Vieira, Jens Lehmann, Sol Campbell.

The Verdict: Ideal candidate

Now 37, Rowberry accepted his first solo managerial position when he joined the League Two Exiles back in 2021, and has previously worked under the likes of Mick McCarthy and Neil Warnock during his time on the coaching staff at Cardiff City.

The Hoops target initially managed to turn his Newport squad into promotion contenders, but ended up just falling short, having failed to secure a play-off place after suffering three losses in their last four games.

If Rowberry could create the same team spirit and fight at QPR then he could well be the right man to take on in the dugout, in the hope that Rangers will be making a serious push to make a return to the Premier League next season.

Noema-Barnett blitz gives Central Districts win

Central Districts broke their three-match losing streak with a seven-wicket win against Otago, while Auckland scraped home by one run against Canterbury

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Dec-2010Kieran Noema-Barnett scored the fastest half-century in New Zealand domestic Twenty20 cricket to help Central Districts break their three-match losing streak. Chasing Otago’s 175, Noema-Barnett smashed 57 off 18 to take Central Districts home with 15 balls to spare at Queen’s Park in Invercargill. It was his first half-century in Twenty20 cricket. Central Districts got off to a quick start in their chase thanks to George Worker’s 43 and were on course when Noema-Barnett came in at 100 for 2. He decided not to leave it till the last over as he smashed six sixes of the hapless Otago bowlers. Neil Broom and wicketkeeper Derek de Boorder had got Otago to a competitive total with their unbeaten seventh-wicket partnership of 79 off 38. Michael Yardy, the England left-arm spinner, and seamer Adam Milne took two wickets each to reduce Otago to 96 for 6 before Broom and de Boorder’s partnership. Central Distrcits move up to third in the table after the win while Otago are rooted to the bottom, having lost all four of their games.Auckland scraped to a one-run win at the Village Green in Christchurch after Ryan ten Doeschate failed to hit the required boundary off the last ball for Canterbury. Doeschate, who plays for Netherlands, had brought Canterbury close in their chase of 156 and finished with 51 not out off 41. Auckland had reached their total thanks to opener Jimmy Adams’ 45 off 37 and some late hitting from Colin Munro, who scored 33 off 16. They were helped by Canterbury’s bowlers, who gave away seven runs in wides. In their chase, Canterbury lost two early wickets before Doeschate and opener Rob Nicol put together a 55-run partnership. But once Nicol was out, Auckland got another quick wicket and managed to keep a lid on the runs to take the victory. Auckland move to joint top of the table with the win.It was one-way traffic at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, as half-centuries from wicketkeeper Peter McGlashan and Brad Hodge, the Australia batsman, gave Nothern Districts a 54-run victory over Wellington. Hodge had got the visitors off to a swift start with his 51 off 32, and then McGlashan’s 66 off 31 and Anton Devcich’s 48 off 30 kept the run-rate up to take them to a total of 201. Wellington’s response never kicked off and they were bowled out in 19.5 overs. Jesse Ryder, who missed New Zealand’s ODI series in India with a calf injury, was out for four in the third over and the wickets kept tumbling after that. Left-arm seamer Bradley Scott took 3 for 32 for Northern Districts, as they move up to joint top of the table.
