Wright claimed 5 for 70 and his new-ball colleague Palladino 4 for 57 as the visitors were bowled out for 177.By the close Essex had moved to 103 for 1 in their second innings, thanks largely to an unbeaten 61 from Alastair Cook, to go into the third day with an overall advantage of 194.After Liam Plunket had claimed the final Essex wicket in the morning to bowl them out for 268, Durham suffered a horrendous start to their reply. They lost their first four wickets for only five runs as Wright and Palladino each claimed a couple.Swing rather than seam proved the batsmen’s undoing but it was never as pronounced as the early clatter of wickets suggested. A recovery of sorts stemmed from the efforts of the middle order, with Ben Harmison playing the leading role.First he shared in a fifth wicket stand of 53 with Ian Blackwell, who made 24, before the latter’s defences were breached by Palladino, and then Phil Mustard scored 31 in a stand of 45 before the same bowler struck again.When Wright removed both Scott Borthwick and Plunket, Durham found themselves 108 for 8 and still 11 runs short of being asked to follow on. But the arrival of Mitch Claydon quickly ended such fears as they proceeded to put together the highest partnership of the innings.It yielded 62 before Harmison, after reaching a season’s best 66 that included eight boundaries, provided young paceman Michael Comber with the first Championship wicket of his career by driving into the hands of Wright at mid-off.Wright then got rid of Chris Rushworth to complete his five-wicket haul to ensure Essex went in again with a substantial advantage, one that was built upon in confident style by Cook.Although he lost Billy Godleman, his opening partner, soon after the lead had been stretched into three figures, Cook batted with a confident air to complete his half century from 78 balls with the help of seven boundaries. Keeping him company was 20-year-old Jaik Mickleburgh who again batted with fine composure to reach the close on 31. The partnership has so far produced 74.

Speaking to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur club ‘insider’ John Wenham has suggested that transfer chief Fabio Paratici should be looking to sign Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford. 

The lowdown: Backing the wrong horse…

Spurs have been heavily linked with a move for Leeds winger Jack Harrison in recent times and a summer swoop could be on the cards.

Boasting 11 direct goal contributions across all competitions this season, Harrison has continued to impress in the Premier League.

However, Wenham believes that Tottenham manager Antonio Conte should be focussing attention elsewhere within the Elland Road squad…

The latest: Better options

Speaking to FI, the regular contributor to the Lilywhites Rose social media channels suggested that Bamford may well be a more worthwhile target.

“If we were going to sign somebody from Leeds, he wouldn’t be in my top three, to be honest.

“I really like Bamford, I like the idea of him as back-up for Kane. I think he’s quite underrated.

“He has a similar skill set in that he can bring other players into the game.

“If we were going to get anyone from Leeds, that’s what I would do but maybe Harrison could do a job at wing-back.”

The verdict: Smart move

Whilst this season has been an injury-hit one for the 28-year-old, the outstanding 17 goals and eight assists in the league in 2020/21 suggest that the Englishman is certainly on the level required to bolster Conte’s attacking options.

Comfortable operating in a similar role to that of Harry Kane, Bamford would have no issues adapting to life in North London and could be the perfect foil for the England captain.

At the right price and with fitness woes behind him, the frontman once hailed as ‘exceptional’ by Jurgen Klopp would be a smart addition to the squad at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Former Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson believes Misbah-ul-Haq has the “best cricket brain” in Pakistan and is well-placed to handle the Test captaincy, surprisingly handed to the 36-year-old last week.Misbah was thought to be out of national reckoning when he wasn’t picked for the Asia Cup or the tour to England earlier this year. But a disastrous sequence of captaincy appointments left the board, in their own words, with little choice.Lawson is well-placed having been coach during Misbah’s return to international cricket three years ago during the 2007 World T20, a tournament which he nearly won for Pakistan. That sparked the most productive phase of his career and it was in Lawson’s time, between 2007 and 2008, that he established himself in the middle order; in five Tests under Lawson, he averaged 78 with two hundreds and a fifty; he averaged 41 in 28 ODIs, and over 67 in the ten Twenty20s Pakistan played with Lawson in charge.Misbah was vice-captain to Shoaib Malik during that time and took over on one occasion, leading Pakistan to an ODI win over India in the 2008 Asia Cup in Karachi. “He definitely has the best cricket brain and intellect in Pakistan cricket,” Lawson told ESPNcricinfo. “He has a statesman-like demeanour which so many Pakistan captains have lacked and he handles adversity analytically not emotionally. He knows how to get the best out of players and he is a winner, note his outstanding domestic record as a leader.”Several former players, including Wasim Akram have expressed their surprise at the appointment. Mostly it stems from Misbah’s age – even though he is, for now, captain for only two Tests against South Africa – but also from his batting form.His comeback ended initially in September 2009, when he was dropped for poor form. He returned, however, during the subsequent tour of New Zealand and Australia at the insistence of Mohammad Yousuf, who was captain at the time.More disappointing returns on that tour formed part of a broader decline since Lawson’s departure. He averages 24 in nine Tests since Lawson left in October 2008, and 21 in 19 T20Is. An average of nearly 40 in 16 ODIs since then is not enough to assuage the concerns of some that he doesn’t command an automatic place in the XI.”He works very hard on his fitness and his cricket skills so physically he will be in good shape,” Lawson said. “The question is simply one of age and reactions. Has he got the sharpness to be productive at international level at 36? The captain leading or failing by example can have a significant effect on any team but especially Pakistan. He deserves this but Ideally he should have been captain six years ago.”

West Ham United will take on a Chelsea side without Antonio Rudiger and Mateo Kovacic in the Premier League this afternoon.

What’s the latest?

Speaking to the media ahead of the match, as quoted by Football.London, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel stated: “For Sunday, both of them [Kovacic and Rudiger] are not back, but there are no other new injuries.”

Rudiger missed Wednesday evening’s 4-2 defeat to Arsenal with a groin injury whilst Kovacic couldn’t manage 30 minutes in the Blues’ FA Cup semi-final victory over Crystal Palace last weekend, withdrawing with an ankle injury.

Moyes will be buzzing

Of course, they can’t let their heads drop, however, Chelsea’s chances of finishing third in the Premier League look pretty secure whilst the Hammers will have plenty to play for.

However, in order to guarantee European football via the league, there is now very little room for slip-ups for the Hammers, with Wolves very much in the picture too.

Both Rudiger and Kovacic are major absentees for the west London outfit, with the duo making 47 and 40 appearances this term for Tuchel’s side respectively. Rudiger, in particular, was a big absentee in midweek when Chelsea’s defence were error-prone and mistake-riddled on their way to a 4-2 defeat versus Arsenal.

West Ham must take confidence into their meeting with Chelsea from the fact that they ran out 3-2 victors in the reverse fixture whilst the Blues’ home form of late has been woeful, losing 3-1 to Real Madrid and 4-1 to Brentford in their last two matches at Stamford Bridge prior to the Arsenal crushing.

Moreover, the fact their London rivals will be without two key players will have Moyes buzzing.

Leeds United’s decision to let Tom Cairney leave Elland Road all the way back in 2007 may go down as one of the club’s biggest ‘what if’ stories in recent memory.

The midfielder was with the Whites for nine years but was released after being deemed “too small” at only 5 foot 1, and Cairney himself has since admitted that the rejection has played a big part in the way he would define his career.

In opening up about it back in 2014, he revealed: “To be honest it crushed me, it crushed me a lot. I was with Leeds from I was seven to 16 so it was a big part of my life. I was going there three-four times a week, missing days of schools, and obviously my mum and dad had put a lot into it too.

“So getting released at 16, it just felt like, ‘oh no, after all that effort’. But I was determined I would not stop there.”

After shining at Blackburn Rovers, Cairney made the move to Fulham, and he has been a cornerstone of the London side for a number of years now, helping them to the Premier League a couple of seasons ago and now seeing them back in the hunt for promotion again.

Winner of the EFL Player of the Year award back in 2017, it’s no surprise that he has earned rave reviews for his performances with the Cottagers, with former boss Scott Parker waxing lyrical about him following a 1-1 draw against Bristol City.

He said: “Tom Cairney took his goal superbly and was outstanding throughout the game. I thought he was head and shoulder above every other player.

“We all know his quality on the ball, but in the last three games he has showed much more than that and today it was a complete performance.”

Having recovered from the injury that kept him out for most of the first-half of the season, Cairney has resumed his responsibility as Fulham captain, and is helping lead the promotion charge.

The Cottagers currently find themselves in 1st and well-placed to secure a return to the Premier League under Marco Silva, and Cairney’s inspirational displays in the middle of the park have been a catalyst for that.

Indeed, the Cairney back in 2014 has probably delivered the most impactful line of how those back at Elland Road are probably feeling right now.

He joked: “I think the academy staff at Leeds must have got a bit of a shock when they saw me playing in the Premier League! I don’t know what happened to them but I think they may have got a telling off!”

While Cairney may not be playing Premier League football like Leeds just yet, he looks set to do so very soon.

And had the Whites just shown a bit of faith in a small and diminutive 16-year-old, he could well have been turning out for them instead of a potential rival next season.
