Canada will be the overseas team participating in the inaugural Caribbean Twenty20 tournament between July 22 and 31 in Barbados and Trinidad, Cricket Canada has announced. Apart from Canada, the tournament will include seven regional teams – Barbados, Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica, Windward Islands, Leeward Islands and Combined Campuses and Colleges. The winner will be the sole representative from the West Indies in the Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa in September. Last year Trinidad and Tobago, the winners of the Stanford 20/20, qualified for the inaugural Champions League in India and finished runners-up.Ravin Moorthy, Cricket Canada’s first vice-president, said the tournament was a great opportunity for supporters to fly down from Canada.”Fans across Canada are anxiously anticipating this event and hundreds are expected to flock to the Caribbean to watch the action,” he said. “The world’s biggest T20 stars, including Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard, will be taking the field against Rizwan Cheema and the rest of the Canadian stars. This is a great moment for Canadian cricket and something we should all embrace.”The eight teams will be split into two groups of four, with each team playing three games in the league stage, and the top two teams in each group qualifying for the semi-finals. Barbados will host the first eight games from July 22 to 25, while the next eight will be held in Trinidad from July 28 to 31. August 1 is the reserve day for the final.

Newcastle journo reacts to Ashworth move

Newcastle journalist Liam Kennedy has commended PIF on the impending appointment of Dan Ashworth as director of football.Â

The lowdown

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported in December that Brighton and Hove Albion had given Newcastle permission to speak to Ashworth about the role.

And The Seagulls confirmed on Monday that the 50-year-old would be leaving the club.

Following a period of gardening leave, he’s expected to join Newcastle and become PIF’s first executive appointment (via BBC Sport).

The latest

Kennedy took to Twitter on Monday morning to offer his reaction after hearing the news.

He wrote that it was ‘a seriously good appointment’ by the new regime at St James’ Park.

The Newcastle World journalist is excited that the club are ‘starting to make big moves’.

The verdict

Ashworth boasts an impressive track record at Brighton, certainly when it comes to transfers.

He’s overseen a recruitment team that’s spotted bargains. For instance, they paid Chelsea just over £1million to sign Tariq Lamptey, and less than two years later, reports suggest it will take £40million to prise him away.

In terms of outgoings, he was able to negotiate a £52.65million fee for Ben White, a player who came up from the Under-18s and had only played in the Premier League for a single season.

But the challenge may be different at Newcastle. Ashworth may relish the opportunity to pull the strings at one of the world’s richest clubs, but the ambitious ownership may be expecting ready-made stars rather than rough diamonds or lesser-known talents.

Newcastle sealed dream deal for Bruno Guimaraes

Newcastle United climbed further clear of the bottom three at the weekend as they beat Aston Villa 1-0 in the Premier League.

The Magpies have now won all of their last three games in the division, having won just one of the previous 20 outings this season.

Their resurgence has come off the back of the January transfer window as PIF went about improving Eddie Howe’s squad.

One of the signing last month is yet to start a match in the top-flight for the Magpies after coming back from international duty, but has come off the bench twice – Bruno Guimaraes.

The midfielder signed from Ligue 1 side Lyon and has played two minutes of Premier League football outside of injury time, creating one big chance and winning 75% of his duels in that time. This is a glimpse into what he could produce for the club as his form in France suggests that he will be a huge addition to the team.

Upon the Brazilian’s arrival at St. James’ Park, Howe said: “Bruno is a hugely exciting talent and has been one of our primary targets so I’m delighted to secure him. He strengthens the group immediately ready for the challenge ahead.

“He has been one of the standout performers in France and is a full international for Brazil so I have no doubt our supporters will really enjoy watching him. We look forward to welcoming him to the club on his return from international duty.”

PIF sealed a dream deal by bringing him to Tyneside as they have picked him up at a terrific point in his career. As per Transfermarkt, his market value has skyrocketed 1400% since 2019 – going from £1.8m in February of that year to his current valuation of £27m at Newcastle.

This shows that they have picked up a player who is on the rise and has potential, rather than spending big money on someone with no resale value or much scope for improvement beyond their current state. At the age of 24, he could have plenty of development left in him and this means that he could be an excellent investment by PIF, both in terms of what he could grow into on the pitch and how much he could be worth in two or three years.

In Ligue 1 this term, he averaged a brilliant SofaScore rating of 7.30. He averaged 3.6 tackles and interceptions and 1.8 key passes per game, showing the level of influence he is capable of having at both ends of the pitch.

Of course, he has to prove that he can do it on a consistent basis in the Premier League for Newcastle, but all the evidence indicates that PIF sealed a dream deal by striking an agreement with Lyon in January.

Carefree Sehwag unconcerned by missed ton

Sehwag had shown remarkable patience and application in giving India a superb start, but threw it away when he tried to go from 99 to 105

Virender Sehwag on his dismissal: “I knew it was the doosra, but I went for the shot.”•Associated Press

To listen to Virender Sehwag is to realise that perhaps we take our game too seriously. That, after all is said and done, it is just a sport. Two matches in a row he has thrown away his wicket with the bowlers at his mercy. One of them became part of the reason why India find themselves 1-0 down in the series, the other hasn’t been as fatal, thanks to Sachin Tendulkar. At least that’s what it looks like now.In the second of those instances, Sehwag had shown remarkable patience and application in giving India a superb start, but threw it away when he tried to go from 99 to 105 – off the first ball he faced from Suraj Randiv today. The mind was made up to charge at the bowler, he saw a shortish delivery that he couldn’t reach, made a last-ditch effort to fetch it and drag it to the on side, and missed the straighter one. He just shrugged his shoulders and said, “Yes I read it. I knew it was the doosra, but I went for the shot.”It is not as if he is irresponsible or mindless. To suggest any of those would be unfair, and disrespectful to one of the sharper brains around. Still he gets really annoyed when all the opposition is trying to do is to contain. He fought his instinct for long durations today, and when he saw a new bowler, he perhaps saw an opportunity for a boundary: he had scored only one in the 16 previous overs.”I am disappointed,” he said. “Not because I was out on 99, but because today’s day could have been very good for us if we were one or two down. We had a great opportunity to post a big total. But thanks to Sachin Tendulkar we are back in a good situation. If we play well tomorrow then we can avoid the follow-on and also bat the whole day.”Sehwag didn’t quite panic then, at the mammoth Sri Lankan total. “Not really because the wicket is so good to bat on,” he said. “I knew somebody will make a big one. I was expecting from VVS [Laxman] and Sachin to complete the hundreds, unfortunately Laxman got out. Full praise to Suresh Raina, he batted really well and scored his fifty. I am hoping that tomorrow morning he will come and complete his hundred.”Sehwag deserves praise for the way he began yesterday himself. It wasn’t an easy job to play as aggressively as he did after having spent so much time in the field, and the debacle of the first match. “There was an opportunity if you bat for 18 overs,” he said. “You have a chance to score 50. I grabbed the opportunity and scored 60 not out, and I came today morning and tried to score a big one but unfortunately I got out.”Asked if anybody was waiting in the dressing room to pull him up after that dismissal, Sehwag said, “Probably, I have played (too) many Test matches for anybody to come and tell me I have missed a hundred. It is written there in big letters that I made 99.”Thankfully for Sehwag and India, there was Tendulkar to cover up for his error today. Asked if there was anything new to learn from Tendulkar’s batting, Sehwag is honest. “It is difficult to say what we have learned from watching him,” he says. “Everyday we listen to him in the dressing room, and that is as good as learning.”Looking at Suresh Raina batting and Tendulkar, it is difficult to say who is making debut. The big plus point is about Sachin is that whenever he gets down to play it is as if he is playing his first game.”

– Sempre teve pressão no Corinthians, faz parte.

Essex and Warwickshire found themselves locked in a tense struggle at Southendon a day which saw a total of 17 wickets fell for 234 runs. After Essex had lost their final wicket in the morning to be bowled out for 150, Warwickshire responded with 155 before reducing the home side to 78 for 6 in their second innings.Bryce McGain, in only his second and probably last County Championship gamefor the county, was the key figure in Warwickshire’s demise. The 38-year-old Australian legspinner took 4 for 33 in 10 overs to add to his five-wicket haul in the previous match against Kent.McGain joined Essex a fortnight ago as a replacement for Danish Kaneria. Butnow that Kaneria has been axed from Pakistan’s touring squad, Essex are seekingto re-register him for the remainder of the summer, a move that will signal theend of McGain’s spell. His last outing for the county is expected to be in theClydesdale Bank 40 duel against Northamptonshire on Sunday.McGain’s arrival heralded the first sight of a spinner in the match in the 85thover and he struck with his first delivery to have Tim Ambrose caught behindby James Foster. He also needed Foster’s help to remove Neil Carter and Imran Tahir, before which he also trapped Keith Barker lbw for 22.Darren Maddy and Rikki Clarke grafted away for nearly half of Warwickshire’stotal. Maddy’s innings of 39 spanned 88 deliveries while Clarke’s 36 came from 80balls. Both eventually became lbw victims of paceman David Masters who went onto finish with 3 for 51 from 19.4 overs.Jaik Mickleburgh and Mark Pettini began encouragingly enough when Essexembarked upon their second innings, taking the total to 33 before the WestMidlands county hit back strongly.Pettini was caught behind off Boyd Rankin and Tom Westley edged Clarke to secondslip before Carter struck twice in consecutive overs to leave Essex on 56 for4. First he had Ravi Bopara caught behind and then ended Mickleburgh’sresistance by trapping him leg before after the opener had reached 30.Essex were then to suffer a double blow just before the close. Foster was superbly caught low down at first slip by Maddy to provide Chris Woakes with success and with the day’s final delivery Tony Palladino was stumped when moving forward against spinner Tahir. It all left Essex going into the third day with an advantage of just 73 and with Warwickshire nursing high hopes of claiming only their third Championship victory of the summer.

Crystal Palace keen on Alex Moreno

Crystal Palace and Tottenham are both thought to be keen on signing Spanish left-back Alex Moreno this summer.

The Lowdown: Moreno profiled

Moreno has spent his entire domestic career in his native country and currently plies his trade with Real Betis.

The 28-year-old, who can also play further forward when needed, is valued at £10.8m and is under contract until 2025.

He has impressed this season, contributing to ten goals in 36 games. Before 2021/22, Moreno had only contributed to seven goals in 58 appearances for Betis, and it seems as if his red-hot form this term has now caught the eye of Palace officials.

The Latest: Palace interest

Barca Universal relayed an update from Mundo Deportivo regarding Moreno on Thursday.

They claimed that Barcelona, Palace and Spurs are all keen on Moreno, with Betis preparing to lose the full-back over the coming months.

The Verdict: Competition for Mitchell?

Palace youngster Tyrick Mitchell has starred under Patrick Vieira, playing every Premier League game this season.

The 22-year-old is the only senior left-back on the books at Selhurst Park, though, so it could be wise to bring in someone like Moreno over the summer.

Moreno, who has 25 assists to his name during his career, would provide cover and competition to Mitchell and would also be able to play as a winger when required. Palace face some tough competition for his services, but it could be a deal to keep a close eye on.
