England’s coach, Andy Flower, believes that some of England’s key players will have to be rested during the forthcoming home series against Bangladesh, Pakistan and Australia, in order to make sure they are in peak condition come the Ashes and the World Cup this winter.Speaking in the aftermath of England’s triumphant World Twenty20 campaign in the Caribbean, Flower emphasised the need to keep bodies and minds fresh in the course of a hectic schedule, and warned that key performers such as Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood and Graeme Swann – who are integral to all three forms of the game – are those most at risk of burn-out.”We have a very busy 12 months ahead of us and we are going to have to rest players at various times,” England Flower told reporters at Gatwick on Monday. “In certain situations it is possible that we will have to rest some players either for emotional reasons such as stress, and sometimes it will be for strength and conditioning reasons. With our schedule it will be hard to fit enough strength and conditioning in.”The issue of squad rotation comes into sharp focus this week with the return to action of the Test and 50-overs captain, Andrew Strauss. He has been resting since the end of the South Africa series in January, having been replaced by Alastair Cook for the recent tour of Bangladesh, but is set to lead the side at Lord’s next week for the first Test of the summer, against Bangladesh.Collingwood, who has become the first England captain to lift an ICC trophy in 35 years of trying, says that he has no wish to reclaim the job that he held briefly at 50-over level in 2008, and is ready and willing to return to the ranks when Strauss returns to the fray.”Andrew Strauss is obviously our captain in the one-day format and in the Test format,” said Collingwood. “He’s a fantastic leader, and a lot of this kind of success we’ve had over the last few weeks can go down to a lot of the values he and Andy Flower have installed in us over the past year. The team ethic has certainly helped the team gel together and become a strong unit.””The players are desperate to continue this kind of form and this brand of cricket and hopefully that will take us on to win a lot of silverware in the future,” he added. “The brand of cricket that we played in the Twenty20 is something we have to keep trying to improve. It has been successful in this tournament but we have to adapt it to different conditions now.”We have a World Cup coming up now on the subcontinent and so I’m pretty certain that Strauss and Flower will want us to continue with that same brand of cricket. It’s only another 30 overs on top of what we have been playing in the last few weeks so I’m sure that if we can go out with the same mentality we will go out and scare a lot of sides with the way we play.”

West Ham: Ex drops Caleta-Car update

West Ham United are no closer to agreeing a deal to bring Duje Caleta-Car to the London Stadium on transfer deadline day.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, who revealed in a recent post on The West Ham Way that, despite a host of reports suggesting otherwise, there has been no agreement between West Ham and Olympique de Marseille reached regarding the transfer of the 25-year-old centre-back.

The Irons insider goes on to state that, with things moving very quickly on the final day of the January transfer window, a deal could quite easily be done at some point today, however, as things currently stand, the Croatia international will be remaining with the Ligue 1 side.

In his post, Ex said: “We have just asked our top transfer sources what the situation is with Caleta-Car. Whilst this isn’t going to be what the fans want to hear, unfortunately, French sources and others are [getting] ahead of themselves. There is a ‘jumping the gun’ situation with reports at this stage of the window, with everyone wanting to call the deal first.

“I asked whether reports of a deal being close were true and I simply got ‘not true’ back in response. The talks will be ongoing to get this deal over the line. With only one day left things will have to progress quickly and obviously can do but there [is still] some distance to go. The problem still remains that we want an initial loan deal and Marseille wish to sell. The club do want to continue talks and get this done so let’s hope it does change soon (it has to).”

Not what “fans want to hear”

Considering West Ham’s desperate need for defensive reinforcements following the season-ending injury suffered by Angelo Ogbonna, in addition to the poor form of both Issa Diop and Craig Dawson while covering for the Italian – particularly that of the former – the news that a deal for Caleta-Car is no closer to getting over the line is certainly not what fans will be hoping to hear, as Ex suggests.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-west-ham-news” title=”Check out the latest West Ham News”]

Indeed, in the 11 Premier League fixtures in which Ogbonna has featured this season, the Hammers boast a record of seven wins, two draws and two losses – having conceded 13 goals in this period.

Meanwhile, over the 12 league games in which the 33-year-old has been sidelined as a result of his injury, West Ham’s record stands at four wins, two draws and six losses – with the club conceding 18 times in this period.

As such, it is clear to see that, should David Moyes wish to give his side the best possible chance of securing a top-four finish in the league this season, he simply must get a deal over the line for a new centre-back – preferably the extremely impressive Caleta-Car – prior to tonight’s transfer deadline.

Leeds: Kalvin Phillips poised to sign new deal

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is likely to sign a new contract at Elland Road, according to The Daily Star’s chief sports reporter Jeremy Cross.

The Lowdown: Source drops worrying news

Phillips, who hasn’t featured since December, returned to training last week and is now in the final stages of his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The 26-year-old was the subject of a big-money bid from West Ham late in the January window, with the Whites rebuffing any interest in the holding midfielder along with wide man Raphinha.

A Leeds source then informed Football Insider that the club are expecting to receive major offers for Phillips in the summer which are likely to exceed the Hammers’ £50m offer last month.

The Latest: New deal imminent

Cross shared a story on The Daily Star on Tuesday afternoon in regards to Manchester United’s search for a new midfielder.

Phillips was a name mentioned, however, Cross revealed that Phillips has made it clear he doesn’t want to move to Old Trafford and is ‘poised’ to sign a new deal in Yorkshire.

The Verdict: Massive boost

Phillips has starred under Marcelo Bielsa over the last four years, with the Argentine transforming the player into a brilliant defensive midfielder. He has gone on to star on the international stage as well and was even named England’s Player of the Year for 2020/21.

His Transfermarkt valuation has also rocketed from £4.5m to £36m under Bielsa, so keeping hold of the club’s most valuable player can only be good news.

Hopefully, that will put off any interested parties for the time being, and you’d expect Leeds are willing to hand the midfielder a bumper pay rise on his current £25,000-a-week deal, especially when you consider Rodrigo is on four times that amount.

Futebol de gente grande! Garotada do Fla agrada e ganha espaço no Carioca

– A garotada tá pronta pra enfrentar todas as dificuldades – completou.

Dilshan century drives Sri Lanka to title

On the final day of the tri-series, the clock struck 12 and Zimbabwe’s Cinderella XI ran into harsh reality and were beaten comfortably by Sri Lanka

On the final day of the tri-series, the clock struck 12 and Zimbabwe’s Cinderella XI ran into harsh reality. Put into bat, they were accosted by top-quality swing bowling from Nuwan Kulasekara and Dilhara Fernando, and the damage done in those early overs was too great to reverse for a resourceful Tatenta Taibu, who swept and hustled his way to 71. Tillakaratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga were ruthless in finishing Zimbabwe off with a 160-run opening stand.Zimbabwe were also hit hard by their batsmen’s general tendency to not play the full-blooded cut shot. Brendan Taylor, their best batsman of the tournament, and Taibu, the best on the final day, both fell to limp cuts, finding gully and point respectively. On the big day, Zimbabwe displayed muddled thinking too: with five wickets down, both Greg Lamb and Charles Coventry got out swinging, but the batting Powerplay wasn’t taken before the 46th over. Nor did they open the bowling with spin, a move that had worked well for them. By the time Ray Price bowled his first over, Sri Lanka had already reached 38 in six overs. At any rate, even Price’s best effort might not have been enough. They were forced into perennial rebuilding mode by the Sri Lankan new-ball bowlers. Kulasekara swung the ball in, Fernando out, and Zimbabwe hardly looked like challenging the norm of chasing sides winning in the tournament. Kulasekara gave four runs in his first four overs for the wicket of Hamilton Masakadza, and Zimbabwe never really recovered. If Fernando’s bowling – fuller than his stock length, thus getting outswing – was a bonus, Kulasekara’s use of the straighter delivery was just as good. When an asphyxiated Masakadza tried to counter the inswing by walking across the stumps, the ball just held its line and took a healthy outside edge. Taylor struggled against the current, going from 4 off 10 to 19 off 21, but played perhaps his worst shot of the series when he looked to steer Fernando despite the presence of a gully fielder. Thilan Samaraweera went low to his right to complete the catch, and the openers were gone inside the first 10 overs. The change-up bowlers were just as tight, and by the start of the 17th over Tatenda Taibu and Craig Ervine had scored 16 off 51 deliveries between them. The pressure showed in their going for risky runs: an over after Ervine survived a close one, Taibu ran him out, calling for a tight single and then sending him back. Then began Zimbabwe’s recovery. Taibu went on a sweeping spree, of both varieties. He and Lamb ran hard, putting behind them the run-out. One of those stolen singles earned them four overthrows too. In the 24th over, Taibu hit two lovely chipped boundaries over extra cover. From 7 off 24, he had moved to his fifty off just 70 balls, during a partnership of counterattack.Taibu and Lamb had added 90 when Fernando was called back in the 36th over. Taibu got one short and wide, and he went for the cut. The bat face closed a touch early, and he held back a bit too. Instead of going over point, the ball went straight to the fielder.A spell of ordinary cricket from Zimbabwe thereon resulted in a collapse. Lamb found it hard to keep alternating the strike, Elton Chigumbura played a tame chip to straight extra cover, and Lamb and Coventry succumbed to big shots without having opted for the Powerplay. Fernando and Ajantha Mendis made sure there was no final flourish, and only poor batting from Sri Lanka could now save the hosts.Poor batting they were not going to get. Dilshan loved the pace Chris Mpofu and Chigumbura provided. He whipped the first ball he faced through midwicket, and never looked back. By the time Price came on to bowl, Dilshan had hit his way to 25 off 19. Once again, the Zimbabwe bowlers made the mistake of bowling too short to him, and paid the price. With only a small target, the Sri Lankan openers didn’t offer the Zimbabwe spinners the respect they were used to. Dilshan hit boundaries in Price’s first two overs and, as has been the trend, Tharanga took over after the Dilshan blitz. By the 17th over, Tharanga had almost caught up with Dilshan, and brought up Sri Lanka’s hundred with an effortless six over long-on, off the bowling of Prosper Utseya. The only matter of interest then was the race between the batsmen to a century. It was ended when there was misunderstanding over a sharp single to short third man, and Tharanga sacrificed his wicket. With 40 runs required, Dilshan was the likelier man to get to the hundred, and he did, and overtook Taylor as the highest run-getter in the tournament.
