A dream come true for debutant Arnel

Brent Arnel couldn’t have wished for a more immediate impact on Test cricket. On debut, Arnel picked up his first wicket with his fifth ball, when Phillip Hughes edged to slip. The only problem is that half his family and friends were in the air, on their way from Hamilton thanks to his late call-up.”A lot of people were waiting to see if I was in, they were jumping on the quickest flight,” Arnel said. “Hopefully my wife is here. I haven’t actually seen if she is. I know my mother and stepfather is, and my dad was coming down.”I was ecstatic [with the wicket]. Dream come true, especially to get it so early. It was probably more a batsman error than my bowling, but I’ll take it. [Daniel Vettori] showed his faith in me and I was quite happy to get the ball quite early. He just said after Timmy [Tim Southee] had bowled two, he said BA you’re down that end, and just gave me a little smile.”Vettori’s smile grew when Arnel returned for a later spell and collected the vital wicket of Simon Katich, who was anchoring Australia’s innings with 79. Katich was trapped lbw to Arnel, who enjoyed nibbling the ball around off the green-tinged Wellington pitch and finished with the best figures of 2 for 70.The Katich dismissal left Australia at 176 for 4 but by stumps they had reached 316 for 4, guided by a 140-run stand from Michael Clarke and Marcus North. Arnel said it was a disappointing end to the day after a positive start that featured a sharp run-out from BJ Watling to remove RIcky Ponting.”We let ourselves down quite a lot,” he said. “We knew going in to the third session what we had to do and we didn’t execute the plans. We needed to put the pressure on and Clarke and North came out quite positive. They wanted momentum before the next new ball and they got it.”

NUFC: Magpies to make fresh move for gem

A major claim has been made on Newcastle United’s pursuit of midfielder Jesse Lingard…

What’s the talk?

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Magpies are set to make another move for the England international and remain in talks with Manchester United.

He Tweeted: “Newcastle will push again on Jesse Lingard deal in the next hours,” he began.

“Magpies board working hard to sign Jesse at least until the end of the season, then he’ll become a free agent. #NUFC Negotiations ongoing with both Manchester United and Lingard representatives.”

Delight

Eddie Howe will surely be delighted by this news as it shows that the club are putting in the effort behind the scenes to get this deal over the line.

The Magpies are in a difficult position in the Premier League and are in dire need of reinforcements to bolster their squad. Despite the 1-0 win over Leeds at the weekend, they remain in the bottom three alongside Watford and Burnley as it was only their second victory of the campaign.

Howe’s side are one point off 17th, with a game in hand on Norwich, and adding further quality to the squad could ensure that they are able to get the job done.

They are evidently not a million miles from safety and that is why the head coach will be delighted with further additions to his starting XI as it could increase the quality he is able to call upon in matches, thus improving their chances of picking up points and moving out of the relegation zone.

Lingard could do exactly that as he has shown that he can score and create goals at this level. Last season, he produced nine goals and four assists on loan to West Ham in the Premier League, demonstrating that he has the ability to make a sizeable impact in the final third.

This suggests that he has the potential to arrive at St. James’ Park and become a match-winner for the Magpies, which is why Howe will be buzzing with the club’s efforts to sign him.

He could come in and score the goals to win crucial points for the team in their battle against the drop down to the Championship and it is now down to PIF to get this deal over the line.

O Palmeiras jogou com Anderson, Mailton (Alan Guimarães), Vitão (Pablo), Iago e Matheus Bahia (Luan); Matheus Neris (Gabriel Furtado), Johnny e José Aldo; Yan (Juninho), Fernando e Léo Passos (Papagaio).

IPL absentees look for early momentum

Cricinfo previews the Group A match between Pakistan and Bangladesh in St Lucia

The Preview by Osman Samiuddin01-May-2010Match facts Saturday, May 1, St Lucia

Big Picture Rust could conceivably be a part of it when Bangladesh and Pakistan open proceedings in a tight Group A. The defending champions have played six Twenty20 internationals since last year’s final and Bangladesh only two. Neither set of players had any involvement in the IPL, though there was some competitive domestic T20s.But the format bestows natural flavours to both sides; Pakistan’s players are long used to it and of Bangladesh it is said that the shorter the format the greater their opportunity. Bald statistics, in win-loss numbers, don’t bear this out but the threat remains greatest surely in this format, given the fine margins on which it is built. In any case, Bangladesh are much improved recently, as performances against India and England indicate. In Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mashrafe Mortaza they have the makings of a solid spine. Sprinkled around them, Pakistan will do well to understand, is credible danger in men such as Mohammad Ashraful, Aftab Ahmed, Mahmudullah and Abdur Razzak. But even without Umar Gul, Pakistan will take some bringing down. Is there any side in the tournament as flexible? There are five allrounders (not including Kamran Akmal) in the squad and conceivably four of them will make any starting XI. If the batting is thinned, and will miss Shoaib Malik and even Younis Khan from last year, the bowling attack and its variety will be the envy of all. Both sides are blessed with spin and it may well be a decisive factor.Form guide (most recent first)Pakistan WLLWW
Bangladesh LLLLLWatch out forPakistan’s middle order is bare, so much will depend on Umar Akmal, their batting discovery of the last year. He hasn’t quite exploded in the format just yet, but his skills are far too well-rounded for that to remain the case. He has the shots and the head and a couple of handy innings in the Champions Trophy last year hinted at a temperament for the big stage.Shakib Al Hasan is Bangladesh’s Atlas, a man eminently capable not only of propping up his side when needed, but dragging them along in his brilliance. In particular, given Pakistan’s frailties against left-arm spin, his four overs will have to be carefully monitored. He hasn’t struck gold with the bat yet in T20 internationals, but it is only a matter of time.Team newsPakistan’s ideal line-up should be fairly straightforward, especially the batting, in which there are fairly limited options. The bowling will depend on the surface; if there is spin, they can play two seamers (with Abdul Razzaq the third seamer) and have up to five spinning options. Otherwise they can play three fast bowlers (with Razzaq again) and still have four spinning options.Pakistan (possible) 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Shahid Afridi (capt), 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Fawad Alam, 7 Abdul Razzaq, 8 Mohammad Sami, 9 Mohammad Aamer, 10 Mohammad Asif, 11 Saeed AjmalBangladesh (possible) 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Imrul Kayes, 3 Mohammad Ashraful, 4 Aftab Ahmed, 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Naeem Islam, 7 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 8 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 9 Mashrafe Mortaza, 10 Abdur Razzak, 11 Syed RaselStats and trivia Bangladesh have lost ten Twenty20 internationals in a row, their last win coming back in September 2007 at the inaugural World T20.Pakistan have beaten Bangladesh in all three T20Is the two sides have played.Quotes”I want to see the same body language whether we are playing Bangladesh or Australia.”

Rangers: Update emerges on John Souttar

An update has emerged on Rangers and their deal to bring John Souttar to Ibrox at the end of the campaign.

What’s the talk?

The Gers have already agreed a pre-contract deal with the defender and Hearts boss Robbie Neilson has now admitted that there are no talks to make the transfer happen immediately instead of in the summer.

He told the Glasgow Times: “There’s been nothing new with John. Although I saw they lost three goals today so I might get a phone call!

“But at this moment in time there’s been nothing.

“He’s fine. He’s left here and he’ll be back in tomorrow. And I expect he’ll be available for Tuesday if he’s still here.”

Fuming

Rangers fans will surely be fuming with this news as it suggests that Ross Wilson is not trying to secure a deal to sign the defender before the window closes.

Souttar could be a sensational addition to the squad and improve the side’s chances of winning the Premiership title this season. He has proven his quality at this level for Hearts and could replace one of Gio van Bronckhorst’s current options, strengthening the team in the process.

The Scotland international has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.40 in the league this term – showing that he can perform to a high level on a consistent basis. He has won 70% of his duels in the division, making 2.4 tackles and interceptions per game.

Meanwhile, no Rangers centre-back has averaged a score higher than 7.18. This suggests that Souttar would come in and be an upgrade on what van Bronckhorst currently has to work with, which is why he could increase the club’s chances of securing the title ahead of Celtic for a second successive season.

Therefore, Gers fans will be gutted with Neilson’s comments as they indicate that Souttar will not be coming to Ibrox this month and they will have to wait until the summer to see him in a light blue shirt. They will be fuming with the club for not trying to negotiate a deal with Hearts to bring him in during the current window.

Although, it is worth saying that anything can still happen heading into deadline day and Rangers could pull a surprise in the final hours of the window to get a deal done. At this point, though, Souttar appears set to remain at his current side until the end of the campaign.
