Bruised thumb puts McCullum in doubt

New Zealand’s hopes of levelling the series in Wellington may have received a blow with doubts over Brendon McCullum’s availability for the second one-dayer after he injured his right thumb yet again

New Zealand’s hopes of levelling the one-day series against India in Wellington may have received a blow with doubts over Brendon McCullum’s availability for the second one-dayer after he injured his right thumb yet again. What is clear is McCullum will not be keeping; Peter McGlashan has been called up to replace him behind the stumps.McCullum badly bruised his thumb, which he had previously fractured, when collecting a ball from medium-pacer Grant Elliott. McCullum batted in the nets on Thursday and Daniel Vettori, the captain, was hopeful he would be able to open the innings. “Obviously, the balance that Brendon brings into the squad is undermined by his ability not to keep but Pete [McGlashan] has been in pretty good form for the Northern Districts,” Vettori said. “So we are hoping he can replicate that and it doesn’t unsettle the team too much.”It’s funny with Brendon. We seem to have had a lot of fitness tests with him and he seems to have come through them all. He’s a pretty belligerent guy and he wants to play every game possible even when it is back down for Otago. I would err on the side of optimism with him, but we just have to wait and see just how it goes today.”If McCullum plays, Neil Broom is most likely to sit out the game. Vettori said he hadn’t discussed it with coach Andy Moles but omitting Broom would be the logical step. However Vettori said McCullum’s absence would push Martin Guptill up the order to open with Jesse Ryder. “Take him [McCullum] out, and you lose his experience and that knowledge of how to chase down scores or even set up a big score. He will be a big loss but we are pretty excited with the way Martin and Jesse are playing. If they have to go out and open the batting, we still have a lot of confidence in them.”

Law set for surprise Derbyshire debut

Stuart Law, the former Lancashire captain, is set to make a surprise first-class debut for Derbyshire after their captain and overseas player, Australia batsman Chris Rogers, didn’t secure his visa in time

Cricinfo staff14-Apr-2009Stuart Law, the former Lancashire captain, is set to make a surprise first-class debut for Derbyshire after their captain and overseas player, Australia batsman Chris Rogers, didn’t secure his visa in time. Law had signed up to play only limited-overs cricket but will step in for the club’s opening first-class game against Essex starting Wednesday.Another experienced player, West Indies batsman Wavell Hinds, managed to get his visa two days ago but South African fast bowler Charl Langeveldt is not available as he will be at the IPL. In Rogers’ absence, wicketkeeper James Pipe will lead this side.”It’s massive for the club because everyone wants to start the season well and put their best team out,” John Morris, Derbyshire’s head of cricket, told the ECB website. “The fact that Chris hasn’t been able to get his visa yet is a blow because he’s a quality player and our captain as well.”But we have Stuart available and that’s a bonus as we can call on his vast experience and quality.”

Tottenham transfer news on Kessie

Tottenham Hotspur are competing with a number of Champions League clubs to sign Franck Kessie on a free transfer next summer.

The Lowdown: Contract running down

Kessie’s contract at AC Milan expires in the summer of 2022, and there are ‘growing concerns’ that he could well leave the San Siro as a free agent.

His agent has recently warned that the central midfield player needs a contract that is ‘up to his standards’, suggesting that what Milan have offered so far is simply not enough.

The Latest: Tottenham ‘ready’

As per Italian football journalist Daniele Longo, there ‘isn’t a chance’ that Kessie will leave in the January window, but there are ‘75% chances’ that he will not extend his current deal at Milan.

As such, Spurs, as well as Barcelona, PSG and Manchester United, ‘are all ready’ to sign him for free next summer.

The Verdict: No-brainer

It is certainly a no-brainer to sign Kessie, who is currently rated at £49.5m on Transfermarkt, on a free, providing Fabio Paratici can sell him on the project in north London of course.

Described as ‘devastating’ and likened to Manchester City and Premier League legend Yaya Toure by former AC Milan great Antonio Cassano back in March (Bobo TV via Milan Live), the Ivory Coast international would certainly elevate the quality in Nuno Espirito Santo’s midfield, scoring 14 times from midfield last season.

At 24 years of age, he still has so much potential left to fulfil, and would come with an incredible potential for profit in the future should the Lilywhites be able to capture him for free.

Ismael must unleash Grady Diangana

With West Bromwich Albion heading into Wednesday evening’s Championship clash in a decent run of form, having picked up ten points from a possible 15 over their last five fixtures, Valerien Ismael will undoubtedly be hoping for yet another positive result at the Liberty Stadium in order to keep the Baggies’ push for a top-two finish heading in the right direction.

However, with Wednesday night’s hosts, Swansea City, being in much-improved form in recent weeks, picking up eight points from a possible 15 over their own last five games, the Frenchman will have to ensure he gets his team selection spot on if he is to have any hope of leaving Wales with all three points.

And, having rested the winger in last Friday’s 1-0 victory over Birmingham City due to a slight hamstring injury, it would appear wise for the 46-year-old manager to unleash Grady Diangana from the off against the Swans.

Ismael must unleash Diangana

Indeed, it is clear for all to see that the £18m club-record signing has not been in the best form of his career over his 11 Championship appearances this season, with the 23-year-old averaging a rather disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.64 – ranking him as the Baggies’ fifth-worst performer in the league.

However, in the club’s 4-0 win over Cardiff City prior to the recent international break, the £9m-rated man started to show signs of the form that helped fire West Brom to promotion back in 2019/20, when, over his 27 minutes on the pitch, Diangana registered one assist, created one big chance, made one key pass, completed one dibble and won two free-kicks for his side.

As such, in order to best help the £36k-per-week winger continue his return to form, Ismael must start the man Pablo Zabaleta dubbed a “dangerous” player against the Swans, as, despite his below-par performances this season, the 23-year-old nevertheless still possesses the ability to terrify a defence that has already conceded 14 goals in the current campaign.

India to host 2011 World Cup final

India will host the final and one semi-final of the 2011 World Cup while Sri Lanka will stage the other semi-final, the tournament’s organising committee decided in Mumbai on Tuesday

India will host the final and one semi-final of the 2011 World Cup while Sri Lanka will stage the other semi-final, the tournament’s organising committee decided in Mumbai on Tuesday. India will host 29 of the 49 matches across eight venues, Sri Lanka will host 12 in three venues while Bangladesh will stage eight at two grounds as well as the opening ceremony on February 18, 2011.The 14 matches originally scheduled to take place in Pakistan have been redistributed with eight going to India, four to Sri Lanka and two to Bangladesh. The quarter-finals will be shared among the three neighbours, with Bangladesh hosting two.The committee also decided to shift the tournament secretariat from Lahore to Mumbai. BCCI’s chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty was appointed the event’s managing director in place of Pakistani banker Salman Butt. The organising committee, headed by ICC vice-president Sharad Pawar, will include an operations and planning group comprising the Bangladesh Cricket Board senior vice-president Mahbubul Anam, Indian board secretary N Srinivasan, Sri Lanka’s Duleep Mendis and Shetty. Haroon Lorgat, the ICC’s chief executive, said IS Bindra, the special adviser to the ICC, would be a key person in the management of the World Cup.He swept aside questions on whether Pakistan would boycott the World Cup in protest at being denied hosting rights, saying “we will cross the bridge when we come to it.” The ICC had to decide on the redistribution of Pakistan’s 14 matches after it removed the country from the list of hosts because the “uncertain political situation” would have made it difficult to “deliver a safe, secure and successful event” in Pakistan.Lorgat said the security concerns of the various ICC members and the players would be addressed with the formation of a special committee headed by Shashank Manohar, the BCCI chief, to oversee security details. “The security arrangements are very important and a special committee… would put together security plans for the successful conduct of the World Cup in 2011,” he said.”We are confident of organising a very successful World Cup,” Lorgat said. The subcontinent last hosted a World Cup in 1996, when India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka shared the games. The final was in Lahore, where Sri Lanka beat favourites Australia in a famous win.

Notts win boosts quarter-final chances

A round-up from the latest Friends Provident Trophy matches

Cricinfo staff19-May-2009Group ANottinghamshire boosted their chances of a place in the quarter-finals with a nine-run win over Leicestershire at Grace Road. Nottinghamshire reached 149 for 3 from 35.3 overs before the rain fell, with Mark Wagh (40) and Samit Patel (48*) both impressing. Leicestershire were set a revised target of 77 in a ten-over thrash, but fell 10 runs short. The hosts needed 19 from 10, before 14 were required off the last over, bowled by Ryan Sidebottom, who conceded just two from the first three balls. Joshua Cobb was then run out with two balls to spare, ending Leicestershire’s hopes in this year’s competition.Group CMark Ramprakash continued his imperious form with yet another century – his third in six Friends Provident ties, and his fourth in all competitions this season – as Surrey posted a daunting 241 for 7 in only 39 overs against Sussex at The Oval. In a rain-reduced fixture that total might have been even more had Ramprakash not been run out in his prime, for 102 from 94 balls, having already cracked five fours and five sixes. Sussex, having already qualified for the quarter-finals, opted to shuffle their lineup for today’s match – including drafting in Chad Keegan, the former Middlesex fast bowler – and their pursuit began poorly when Ed Joyce was bowled for a fourth-ball duck. They were soon behind the rate when they slipped to 102 for 6, with Chris Schofield picking up 5 for 32, and despite Keegan’s enjoyably free-spirited 38, they were rolled for 162 in 30 overs.Group DHeavy Welsh rain at Swanseaprevented Glamorgan’s match against Northamptonshire from getting underway, and the match was abandoned at 2.30pm. Both sides took a point each.
