Arteta suffers fresh Arsenal blow

Mikel Arteta has been handed a potential setback ahead of Arsenal’s return to league action this weekend…

What’s the latest?

Gunners star Emile Smith Rowe has returned to the club early this week, withdrawing from England U21 duty, after feeling unwell, according to the Evening Standard’s Jack Rosser.

Young Three Lions head coach Lee Carsley also spoke about the 20-year-old’s situation, and said:

“It’s not Covid related. He was just feeling unwell so we decided to send him back to Arsenal. He didn’t feel 100 per cent so the best thing to do for Emile was to send him back.”

Arteta has seen several of his first-team players ruled out through injury and illness since the 2021/22 season got underway, so this could be another blow in their attempts to get back on track.

Bad to worse

Indeed, the Gunners sit rock-bottom of the Premier League after three matches, having lost every single one of them without finding the net once, as well as leaking a whopping nine goals – more than newly promoted Brentford and 18 other teams.

They face Norwich City, the side directly above them in the standings on Saturday, and will need a victory to kickstart their season. It really is a crunch match at this early stage as another defeat could leave Arteta and co under even more pressure.

Not having Smith Rowe available would be a devastating setback as his versatility in being able to play wide and through the middle has been crucial for Arsenal, especially as he’s one of the more creative options in the side.

He currently ranks as their third-best player on the year so far and is only behind Nicolas Pepe for dribbles per game (2.5). Last season, he topped the charts for key passes per game, averaging 1.4 attempts every league match, per WhoScored.

The 21-year-old’s form saw the Gunners’ hierarchy hand him a new contract and shirt number, taking the famed no.10 from the departed Mesut Ozil, which only goes to show the sort of faith those around the club have in him.

If Arsenal are to put up a good showing against the Canaries, they’ll need Smith Rowe available, so if he does not recover in time, it’ll be one killer blow to the under-fire Arteta – that’s for sure.

The Spaniard will surely be very worried now.

van Wyk ton puts Eagles on top

A round-up of the latest matches in South Africa’s domestic one-day competition

Cricinfo staff22-Dec-2008Eagles moved back to the top of the table with a six-wicket win over Dolphins in Kimberley thanks to a fine 126 from Morne van Wyk in Kimberley. Eagles were set a challenging 268 from their 45 overs, and although they lost Dean Elgar and Rilee Rossouw in quick succession, Boeta Dippenaar (48 from 64) and Ryan Bailey (60 from just 43 balls) took them through to a comfortable win with one over to spare. Imraan Khan was the standout batsman for Dolphins, continuinghis fine form with an unbeaten 110 – his maiden ton – while Jon Kent smacked a stylish 50 from 45. It wasn’t quite enough, however.Lions’ miserable form in this competition continued at the hands of Cape Cobras who romped to an emphatic 48-run win in Potchefstroom. Cape Cobras compiled a daunting 295 for 8 as Henry Davids top-scored with 97 while Stiaan van Zyl made 81. The real injection in momentum came from Justin Ontong who lifted three sixes in addition to four powerful fours, cracking 54 from 31 as Lions’ bowlers began to suffer. And to ice their cake, 20-year-old Richard Levi heaved 29 from 16. Lions’ chase began promisingly when Alviro Petersen stroked 50 and Vaughn van Jaarsveld a powerful 84, but Rory Kleinveldt took 3 for 26 while Claude Henderson also picked up three wickets and the Lions’ tail failed to wag.Dolphins fought back from their defeat against Eagles earlier in the week, recording a nine-win over Warriors inDurban. Khan’s prolific form continued, and he appeared set for another hundred before he was bowled by Wayne Parnell – the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 56 – for 86. Ahmed Amla’s 64 ensured a competitive total of 250. Warriors’ chase began promisingly – Michael Smith got the innings off to a flyer with 54 from 59 – but despite a number of starts, wickets continued to fall. Davey Jacobs gave them hope with a slick 73 from 71 but was bowled by Jayasuriya who finished with 3 for 39 as Warriors fell 9 runs short.Dillon du Preez and Thandi Tshabalala took six wickets between them in Eagles’ second comprehensive win of the week, beating Titans by 12 runs at Centurion. A run-a-ball 93 from Ryan Bailey anchored Eagles’ competitive, if below-par, 244 for 6 and shared in a fifth-wicketstand worth 158 with Boeta Dippenaar (73 from 89). Titans’ Blake Snijman gave his side hope with 73, but du Preez and Tshabalala maintained their lines to leave the tail with too much to do.Titans responded to their defeat with an impressive five-wicket win over Cape Cobras, however, as Albie Morkel smashed 55 to guide them to their target of 246 at Newlands. Cape Cobras were indebted to Stiaan van Zyl’s second slick knock of the week; his 108 was comfortably the highestscore, though Levi assisted with 47 while Ryan Canning cracked some lofty late-order blows. Titans’ chase began poorly, slipping to 92 for 3, but Morkel and Farhaan Behardien – who made 67 from 63 – took Titans to a cantering win with 25 balls to spare as Cobras suffered from the absence of Charl Langeveldt.Dolphins moved to fourth in the table after beating bottom-placed Lions by five wickets in Pietermaritzburg. Fifties from Vaughn van Jaarsveld and Petersen lifted Lions to 229 but that man Khan, yet again, stabled Dolphins’ response with another fifty. He cracked 74 from 82 withseveral scorching drives through the infield, and was dropped on 6, while Amla made 58 from 59. Both fell within four balls of each other but HD Ackerman stroked 44 while Pierre de Bruyn struck 21 from 26 as Dolphins crept home with four balls remaining.Player of the week – Imraan KhanDolphins might be languishing in fourth place, but without Imraan Khan’s prolific scoring they might easily have slipped further down the table. Khan cracked 110, 86 and 74 – all innings of high class, though he isn’t quite as dashing or extravagant as his opening partner Sanath Jayasuriya. Nevertheless, his method is working and he now has 400 runs from seven matches, averaging 66.66.

Barcelona target Leicester’s Youri Tielemans

Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans has been linked with a move to La Liga giants Barcelona after a string of impressive performances in recent years.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo (as relayed by BBC Sport), Barca are interested in securing the 24-year-old’s services as they look to rebuild their first-team squad.

The report states that: “From the Barca club it is admitted to MD that Tielemans is a midfielder who has been closely followed for a long time, and that he is very interesting due to his physical and technical characteristics, by age, and because his contract ends in 2023, and for now, he does not want to renew with Leicester.”

It was previously reported that Tielemans had entered negotiations over potentially extending his current deal at the King Power Stadium, but Barca’s interest may make him have second thoughts over putting pen to paper on fresh terms.

Leicester City fans will be very concerned

With the Blaugrana missing out on Gini Wijnaldum over the summer and seeing promising academy graduate Ilaix Moriba join RB Leipzig, manager Ronald Koeman is believed to be in the market for a new midfielder.

And Tielemans appears to fit the bill. The technically gifted maestro has established himself as one of the best young players in the Premier League in recent campaigns, scoring 18 goals and laying on a further 19 assists in 113 appearances for the Foxes, securing the FA Cup and Community Shield along the way.

His magnificent goal in the FA Cup final victory over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium capped a magnificent rise under Brendan Rodgers and highlighted his importance to the Midlands outfit.

Therefore, the club’s supporters will be very concerned at this latest revelation regarding interest in Tielemans’ services.

English heavyweights Liverpool and Manchester United have also been outlined as potential suitors in recent weeks and months, but the lure of the Camp Nou may be too much for the youngster to turn down, despite their recent financial troubles.

It remains to be seen whether Tielemans commits his future to Leicester or seeks pastures new, and it’s set to be an agonising wait for everyone associated with the Foxes.

Waqar wants Shoaib to quit Tests

Waqar Younis has advised Shoaib Akhtar to give up Test cricket in a bid to prolong his international career by concentrating more on ODIs and Twenty20 cricket

Waqar Younis, the former Pakistan captain and fast bowler, has advised Shoaib Akhtar to give up Test cricket in a bid to prolong his international career by concentrating more on ODIs and Twenty20 cricket. Shoaib Akhtar returned to the ODI fold in the three-match series against Sri Lanka at home, and struggled to impress in the first two matches, failing to bowl his full quota of ten overs and cutting down significantly on his pace. His below-par performance – he conceded more than six-an-over in both games – also drew criticism from his captain Shoaib Malik, who questioned his fitness and commitment.”I know he has said he wants to play on for another three or four years. But I don’t think he can now handle the pressures and demands of five-day cricket,” Waqar told . “He is a very good bowler but I think he would be well advised to restricting his career to one-day and Twenty20 matches that way I can see him carry on for another two or three years.”You can’t always bowl consistently at a pace of around 145 and 150 kph. Age and time takes a toll on the body and I think Shoaib can still serve Pakistan cricket by taking some tough decisions about his bowling and choice of matches.”Waqar, like Malik, felt there was enough talent in the domestic circuit which deserves to be tried on the international stage. “I don’t think there is going to be any problem with our pace bowling resources in future. And the already established bowlers including Shoaib will face stiff competition in future so it is better they adjusted accordingly in the team.”He also expressed an interest to work with them as either a bowling coach or a consultant if the Pakistan board approaches him to do so.

Newcastle without Willock and Lascelles

Newcastle United have now been dealt a big double injury blow before they take on Watford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Result needed

The St. James’ Park faithful are in desperate need of a result in what they will feel is a winnable game against the newly-promoted Hornets.

They currently sit in 19th spot in the top-flight table, with no wins and a mere two points from their opening five matches (Premier League).

The Latest: Injury news

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match, Steve Bruce has now revealed that both Joe Willock and Jamal Lascelles have been ruled out because of injury, and may face more weeks out:

“Joe Willock’s was a complete fluke. He kicked the ground and damaged his toe. He’ll not make this week and it’ll be touch and go for next week as well. Jamaal Lascelles’ is a muscle injury. He tried yesterday but it was no good so it’ll be a couple of weeks.”

The Verdict: Blow

It certainly is a big blow for the North East club to lose two of their key players before such an important fixture.

Although not off the mark so far this season, Willock has already shown the Tyneside outfit what he can do, with eight goals in 14 games during his loan spell from Arsenal last term (Transfermarkt).

Lascelles is the captain, and so he will have a huge influence on his team not only on the pitch, but off of it as well.

Nonetheless, the Magpies will now have to find a way to win at Vicarage Road with the players that Bruce has available.

Louw's last-ball heroics lift Dolphins

A round-up of the second batch of Pro20 matches for the 2008-9 season

Cricinfo staff09-Feb-2009It was a no-contest as the Eagles thrashed the Cape Cobras by 88 runs in Kimberley. The win was set up by good contributions from Morne van Wyk, Adrian McLaren and Dean Elgar ; the target of 177 was a little too much for the opposition as they collapsed to 88. The newcomer McLaren was particularly strong on the leg side and shared a solid opening stand of 110 with van Wyk, who contributed 59. After he was run out, the Eagles were quiet for a few overs before Elgar smashed 16 off Roger Telemachus’ final over, finishing with 46 off 27 balls. There was hardly any resistance from the Cape Cobras as CJ de Villiers took 3 for 15 while Shadley van Schalkwyk claimed two wickets.Johann Louw was the hero of the night for the Dolphins, striking a last-ball six to help defeat the Cape Cobras by three wickets at Kingsmead. The unfortunate bowler was Claude Henderson, who leaked 10 off the last over. The match came down to the last ball with the Dolphins requiring six to win, which Louw duly delivered as he hit a flat six back over the bowler’s head to take the Dolphins to 120 for 7.Yusuf Abdulla’s 3 for 23 set up the victory in a low-scoring game by Twenty20 standards. Cape Cobras wobbled to 18 for 4 after being asked to bat first and were revived by a stand of 60 between Justin Ontong and Richard Levi. Levi top scored with 46 while Ontong contributed 27. Abdulla then took three lower-order wickets to restrict the opposition to 119 for 8. The Dolphins didn’t get off to the best of starts either, losing three wickets for 25 in the chase. The lower middle order then chipped in but the game was still wide open when Louw and Alfonso Thomas came together at 104 for 7.After two consecutive defeats, the Cape Cobras bounced back with a 16-run win against the Titans at Newlands, thanks to Justin Ontong’s all-round efforts. Ontong top scored with 59 to lift the Cape Cobras to 157 and later took two top-order wickets with his offspin to restrict the Titans to 141. Ontong added 67 for the fourth wicket with Andrew Puttick and a quickfire 36 with Vernon Philander towards the end to push the score. Ontong struck early with the ball, claiming the wickets of Blake Snijman and Roelof van der Merwe in quick succession. The sweep shot didn’t really work for the Titans, who lost three wickets to that stroke. Roger Telemachus was the most effective bowler, taking 3 for 17 off four overs. An unbeaten 72 by Robin Peterson guided the Warriors to an easy eight-wicket win against the Dolphins at Buffalo Park. It was an ordinary batting performance by the Dolphins who could only muster 127. Hylton Ackerman played a lone hand with 49 and only two other batsman managed double figures. Wayne Parnell, the left-arm seamer, had a good outing with figures of 3 for 18. Johann Louw caused an alarm when he took two wickets in successive balls to peg the Warriors back at 26 for 2. But Justin Kreusch joined Peterson and the pair hung on till the end. Peterson hit nine fours and two sixes in his 58-ball knock while Kreusch played the supporting role, hitting 31 off 43 balls. The match between the Lions and Titans at the Wanderers was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
