Flanagan stole the show vs MK Dons

Sunderland continued their 100% record in the 2021/22 campaign with a 2-1 win over MK Dons in League One on Saturday.

Lee Johnson’s side have been in fine form to start the season and have now won all three of their competitive games this month. The Black Cats beat Wigan 2-1 in their first league outing before progressing through to the second round of the League Cup by beating Port Vale by the same scoreline.

Ross Stewart and Elliot Embleton scored the goals either side of half-time for Sunderland, with Troy Parrott scoring a consolation for Liam Manning’s team in the 56th minute.

Sunderland Echo reporter Phil Smith highlighted Stewart, in particular, for praise after the game. He scored a goal and won a penalty, with Smith saying that he was excellent at leading the line.

“Another simply excellent display. Led the line so well on a tougher afternoon where possession didn’t always flow. Got his goal, won a penalty.”

However, we believe that another player stole the show for Sunderland against MK Dons – Tom Flanagan.

The central defender was a brick wall at the back and was crucial to the Black Cats eventually coming away with the three points. After Parrott made the score 2-1 there was a flurry of attacks from the home side to draw level in the game, but Flanagan – along with the help of his teammates – was able to halt them.

On Flanagan, Smith wrote:

“Some good interceptions and headers, and was powerful alongside Wright late on.”

Powerful is an apt description of his performance from Smith. He won an impressive 87% of his duels in the game, winning 100% of his aerial battles and four of his five ground duels.

As per SofaScore, the £3.6k-per-week enforcer also made six clearances, made three tackles and one block throughout the game to keep MK Dons at bay as they continued to knock on the door.

Flanagan was not dribbled past on any occasion during the game and committed one foul. This suggests that the MK Dons forwards struggled to get by the 29-year-old defender, whether that be by forcing him to foul them or skipping by him to progress closer to Lee Burge’s goal.

Therefore, he was able to steal the show from the attackers as he allowed their goals to win Sunderland the game with his terrific defending.

Without his excellent interventions to prevent MK Dons from creating chances and scoring, Stewart and Embleton’s strikes would have been in vain.

Hopefully, he will be able to maintain his consistency and continue to deliver similar displays throughout the season. The Black Cats will need them if they are to finally earn that promotion back to the second-tier.

LFC fans fume at news regarding Brazil trio

A number of Liverpool supporters are unhappy after it emerged that the Reds could be without their three Brazil stars next month.

Jurgen Klopp’s men got their season off to a brilliant start on Saturday, cruising to a 3-0 win away to newly-promoted Norwich City.

On a day when numerous Reds players shone at Carrow Road, their Brazilian heroes had a positive impact on the result.

Alisson made a stunning late save to ensure he kept a clean sheet, Fabinho came on and made a noticeable difference in midfield and Roberto Firmino scored Liverpool’s second goal on the day.

Unfortunately, it looks as though Klopp may have to do without them for a small part of September, with The Daily Mail reporting [via LFC Transfer Room on Twitter] that the trio will have to quarantine after Brazil duty and won’t be able to stay in England instead of playing for their country.

Tim Bresnan, the Yorkshire allrounder, has been called into England’s squad for their ODI against Scotland, at the Grange, on Monday to cover for injury problems to Ryan Sidebottom and Chris Tremlett.Sidebottom has a hip problem and hasn’t travelled to Edinburgh with the team and has been ruled out of the Twenty20 against South Africa, at Chester-le-Street, on Wednesday. He will undergo fitness tests at the National Academy in Loughborough with a view to his participation in the one-day series which starts at Headingley next Friday.Sidebottom has been struggling with injuries through the second half of the season. He missed the Headingley Test against South Africa with a back problem and didn’t look fit when he returned at Edgbaston before being left out at The Oval. However, England coach Peter Moores isn’t concerned about Sidebottom’s long-term fitness. “Physically he’s in a better shape than he was 12 months ago, but he has had a lot of workload and he’s bowled a lot of overs in the Test matches,” he told the . “We rested him for the last Test and it’s given him a bit more of a window to get fully recharged. He’s had a bit of groin pain and neck pain, which they are hopeful of getting cleared up so he is available for the next period to come.”Tremlett has a heel injury and although he has remained with the squad he is doubtful to face Scotland, which has earned Bresnan his recall.Bresnan played four ODIs and one Twenty20 international during 2006, but took just two wickets against Sri Lanka. However has impressed with a consistent county season. He has scored 442 runs in the Championship at 36.83 and taken 40 wickets at 26.42, while earlier in the season he took 18 wickets at 18.05 in the Friends Provident Trophy.England will also be without former one-day captain Paul Collingwood for the match against Scotland as he continues to serve the four-match ban he collected for a slow over-rate against New Zealand. Samit Patel, the Nottinghamshire allrounder, could be in line for a debut after hitting 60 for England Lions against the South Africans on Saturday.

Aston Villa reporter thinks Anguissa could join from Fulham

Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield reckons Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa’s athleticism could make him the perfect signing for Aston Villa.

While captain and talisman Jack Grealish has already left Villa Park for a British record fee of £100million during the window, boss Dean Smith has been busy welcoming a host of arrivals.

Emiliano Buendia has joined from Norwich City for a club-record fee, while the likes of Leon Bailey and Danny Ings have also completed big-money moves.

Anguissa, who suffered relegation to the Championship with Fulham last season, could be set for a speedy return to the Premier League as he is thought to be on Smith’s wishlist and Arsenal are also keeping tabs on the central midfielder.

The Cameroon international has made two appearances so far this season, with Fulham taking maximum points in the fixtures he has featured in.

Hatfield feels 25-year-old Anguissa would be a hit at Villa Park.

He told The Transfer Tavern: “Midfield is the area Villa probably need to address most. Anguissa is an interesting one because he has been linked with Villa previously and it didn’t surprise me to see the links come up again this summer.

“When Fulham previously dropped into the Championship, we saw Anguissa didn’t really fancy it and went out on loan. It could be a possibility again.

“He does seem to fit the mould of what Villa need as he offers that battling mentality in midfield, athleticism and can cover the backline.”

Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden, Australia’s two key injury worries for India, are on track to take part in the four-Test series starting next month. Ponting left the West Indies tour early to have surgery on his wrist while Hayden has been struggling with a lingering Achilles tendon problem.”Everything has been progressing exactly as we liked with Haydos,” Australia’s coach Tim Nielsen told the Herald Sun. Hayden did not appear in a game in the West Indies and the team will be hoping he recovers in time, especially if Andrew Symonds does not make the tour due to his rehabilitation after being sent home from the one-day series in Darwin.Ponting had a short bat at the pre-series camp in Brisbane last month and has continued to increase his workload. He visited Alex Kountouris, Australia’s physiotherapist, in Sydney this week.”The feedback was pretty solid, all good,” Nielsen said. “He has just started batting again as well.”Nielsen said they would wait to make a decision on Symonds’ availability for the India trip. “Until we have finalised everything with Roy (Symonds) and made those decisions, we’re probably not really willing to talk about it, to be honest,” Nielsen said. The squad will be named following Australia’s current match against India A in Hyderabad and the first Test is in Bangalore on October 9.

Pará chegou no Flamengo em 2015 e já conquistou um título, justamente o Campeonato Carioca deste ano. Com a camisa rubro-negra, o lateral-direito já fez 115 jogos e balançou as redes em três oportunidades.
