Liverpool fans call for Minamino to leave

A number of Liverpool supporters have been calling for Takumi Minamino to leave the club this summer following an update on his future.

The Reds could be set for a busy time of things in the next transfer window, with numerous incomings and outgoings expected at Anfield.

One player who has had a curious Liverpool career to date is Minamino, with the Japanese forward arriving from RB Salzburg in December 2019.

The 26-year-old has been limited to just 31 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side, having been loaned out to Southampton in January and not being considered a key part of the Reds’ plans. He has found the net just six times in 42 matches since moving to England, a far from encouraging return for a forward. He has also been questioned over his physicality, being deemed a “lightweight” by some pundits.

It remains to be seen whether Minamino has a future at Liverpool, but the Liverpool Echo claimed that the Merseysiders are open to the idea of selling him this summer.

“Minamino has proven he’s not good enough and would probably get more for him, we would get more than £15m for Origi, don’t underestimate Michael Edwards. I would prefer us to get Malen and Daka with an attacker and maybe Aouar or Renato Sanches if we are going into Ligue 1”

Tsolekile stakes Test claim at Newlands

Marcus Prior26-Nov-2000Thami Tsolekile lived up to his reputation as an international in themaking with a superb innings of 95 as Western Province assumed total controlof their Supersport Series clash against Easterns at Newlands on Sunday.By the end of day three, Easterns had slipped to 36-2 chasing animprobable target of 390 for victory.Tsolekile made the most of his promotion to number three and, resumingovernight without a run to his name, faced a total of 208 deliveries beforebeing bowled around his legs by left arm spinner Anthony Botha just fiveruns short of a maiden first class century. He struck nine fours but worked the ball into gaps at will to accumulate a steady flow of singles.Andrew Puttick added 39 to his first innings 153 not out while NeilJohnson (50) and Ashwell Prince (40*) took the game beyond Easterns’realistic reach with a run-a-ball stand of 79 for the fifth wicket.Eastern’s skipper Deon Jordaan used seven bowlers in his attempts tobreak through but the home side never showed a glimpse of indecision on apitch that has played superbly throughout the match so far.Worse was to come for Jordaan when he was given out on the stroke ofstumps, caught at slip, despite the ball appearing to have bounce of hisfoot off the bowling of WP vice captain Alan Dawson.Roger Telemachus made the initial incision into the Easterns battingwhen opener Ernie Mokoenenyane edged the SA seamer into Tsolekile’s glovesin the first over of the final innings. With both teams guaranteed a place in the ‘Super Eight’ section of theSupersport Series, a win would count as almost double for either side – whostand in first and second place in Pool B – although Easterns would happilysettle for a draw needing a daunting 354 runs on the final day at a rate ofnearly four and a half runs per over.

‘A profissionalização vem andando. Em 2015 não tínhamos tudo consolidado como está.Antes era só o Rafa, numa salinha. Aí ficamos nós três, e vai passo a passo.

A gente dá o nosso parecer, a nossa impressão.

Leicester City linked with Jonathan Tah

Leicester City have been linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to German outlet SportBILD (as reported by Leicestershire Live), the Foxes are interested in acquiring the 25-year-old’s services this summer as Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster his first team squad.

The report claims that Leverkusen would be prepared to let Tah leave if they’re successful in their pursuit of Mainz defender Jeremiah St Juste.

Rodgers needs him

Leicester are expected to be in the market for a centre-back, with club captain Wes Morgan announcing his retirement after a stellar career and Premier League-winning defender Christian Fuchs departing following a five-year stint at the King Power Stadium.

While the likes of Caglar Soyuncu, Jonny Evans and Wesley Fofana all performed admirably throughout the recently concluded campaign, all three suffered prolonged injures at some point, forcing Rodgers to play people out of position in order to plug the gaps.

With the Midlands outfit securing European football for next term, reinforcements will be required if they are to stand a chance of fighting on multiple fronts.

Therefore, a move for the 1.95m (6 ft 5) Germany colossus makes perfect sense for the current FA Cup holders this summer. Once described by former teammate Christoph Kramer as a “battleship”, Tah has been one of the Bundesliga’s best performers in recent seasons.

The Germany international made 27 top-flight appearances for Leverkusen last term, achieving a respectable 6.75 WhoScored rating in the process, and it seems as though the time has come to take the next step in his career.

If Leicester are to continue their development under Rodgers, then director of football Jon Rudkin must back the manager over the imminent transfer window.

While their rivals at the upper echelons of the Premier League table may be more affluent, the Foxes have managed to punch above their weight through a series of astute purchases, and bringing in Tah to replace Morgan would go down as another cunning move from the recruitment team.

In other news…Imagine him and Maddison: Rudkin must sanction Leicester swoop for £34m magician

South Africa hit form at right time

South Africa were given the ideal preparation for their CricInfo Women’s World Cup semi-final clash with Australia on Monday when, courtesy of a Linda Olivier century, they subdued a lively Ireland side at Hagley Oval today

Chris Rosie16-Dec-2000South Africa were given the ideal preparation for their CricInfo Women’s World Cup semi-final clash with Australia on Monday when, courtesy of a Linda Olivier century, they subdued a lively Ireland side at Hagley Oval today. In a first innings that ran the gambit of emotions, the Netherlands had Ireland in trouble early. Then they allowed a third-wicket partnership to develop, ripped through the middle order only to stumble over an unbeaten 37-run world-record 10th wicket stand between Barbara McDonald (22) and Sandra Dawson (13 in her retirement match) that allowed Ireland a very respectable 176 for nine off their 50 overs. The key to South African bowling was their direction. Batsman after batsman hurt the Ireland cause as they played across the line. Five bowled and two caught and bowled told the story of Ireland’s failure to post a big score after the third-wicket partnership between Anne Linehan (40) and Miriam Grealey (30 in her last match as captain) threatened big troubles for South Africa.Hanri Strydom, rushed into the bowling attack early after Sune van Zyl injured herself fielding in the second over of the day, responded superbly, her late swing having all the batsmen in trouble. Strydom (10-1-33-3), Sunette Viljoen (10-2-27-3) and Cindy Eksteen (10-3-28-2) had supposedly done enough to ensure that South Africa would face a modest target of less than 140.But there is a saying among the teams at the tournament about the women of the shamrock: “Who let the Irish out?” And it was reverberating around the ground again today as Dawson and McDonald, coming together at 139 for nine, first survived, then took the attack to the South Africans, standing defiant for the last nine overs. It was a fine effort but it was all in vain. McDonald came back with the ball, tight as ever in her first five-over burst, but today would belong to Linda Olivier. Strydom was back too, dominating early proceedings with the bat. But once Olivier had the measure of an Ireland bowling attack that when not dropping too short was too much on the leg, she was on her way with clinical control. She lost Strydom at 117 when four short of a justly deserved half century but found the perfect partner in one of the consistent players of the tournament, Daleen Terblanche. Together they put on an unbeaten 60 (Terblanche 15 not out) as they marched South Africa to a nine-wicket victory in the 37th over and Olivier to her first ODI century off just 117 balls. The South African coach, Rodney Willemberg, could only be very pleased with the batting. “They applied themselves and they played to their targets.”The bowling was another matter. The direction was fine but the length was not. “There were too many run-scoring balls. They bowled two different lengths,” he said. And that last-wicket stand? “Frustrating.” Of the question of whether to attack or defend against such a partnership, he said, “It is not an easy job for a captain to set fields against such hitting.”But overall he said the match would give the South Africans confidence going into the semi-final against Australia. The century-maker said it was an opportunity that did not come around very often and she was thankful and privileged to get it. Olivier told CricInfo that she and Strydom had set targets in the early overs and had been pleased to reach them.Of Ireland, she said: “It is not a side to underestimate.” She confirmed the need to concentrate because so often it was the bad ball that could take wickets. She said she did become concerned towards the end of the innings when the gap between the runs needed for her century and the runs needed to win became increasingly closer. And the semi-final: “Right now I’m not looking ahead; I’m just enjoying the moment.”For the losing coach, John Wills, it was the story of the tournament, a match in which his team did not get all three phases of the game right. “We did not build partnerships. We self-destructed by playing across the line but the tail-enders showed what can come from playing straight.”Then we had to bowl well and field well – and we didn’t.”The bowlers bowled too short – “70 per cent of the runs were scored on the leg side” – and sharp chances that had to be taken were not.”When they get all three phases of the game right at the same time, they will be in the middle of the rankings.”But for now they go home to prepare for the World Cup qualifying in 2002, which, Wills said, “will be good for them.”

Matthew Hayden's belligerent 147 puts Australia in command

Australia bounced back with a bang after their morale shatteringdefeat in Kolkata, to take the honours on the first day of the thirdand final Test match against hosts India at MA ChidambaramStadium, Chennai on Sunday

Santhosh S18-Mar-2001Australia bounced back with a bang after their morale shatteringdefeat in Kolkata, to take the honours on the first day of the thirdand final Test match against hosts India at MA ChidambaramStadium, Chennai on Sunday. The toast of the day was MatthewHayden who bludgeoned the Indian bowling to make an unbeaten 147,batting all through the day to put Australia in a commanding positionat 326/3.Australian captain Steve Waugh remained unbeaten on 43 at close ofplay. He surpassed the aggregate of Graham Gooch (8,900) when on 30and now has an aggregate of 8,914 runs, the third highest in Testmatch cricket behind the legends Allan Border (11,174) and SunilGavaskar (10,122). Steve Waugh’s twin brother Mark Waugh too passed apersonal milestone; he got to his 7000th Test run when on 46.India made three changes to their side, wicket keeper Sameer Dighe andleg spinner Sairaj Bahutule making their debut and Nilesh Kulkarni theslow left arm spinner making a comeback into the side. Nayan Mongiathe regular wicket keeper had to sit out because of an injury.Australia gave Colin Miller a chance to play, replacing MichaelKasprowicz.Earlier in the day Steve Waugh won a crucial toss and did nothesitate to bat first. Michael Slater struck a four but it was all hecould score before being caught by VVS Laxman off the third ball ofthe first over bowled by Zaheer Khan.Harbhajan Singh who spun the Aussies to a devastating defeat inKolkata was brought on to bowl in the sixth over of the day. TheAussies clearly had a game plan, to upset the rhythm of the bowler.Hayden took the honourable task, stepping down the track and smashingHarbhajan for sixes and fours. Justin Langer too was not to be leftbehind as he lofted a ball from Harbhajan Singh over mid-wicket for aglorious six.In the meanwhile Hayden got a reprieve when he was on 21; Sameer Dighemaking his debut missed an easy opportunity to run Hayden out. It isjust another story that Hayden has made the Indians pay dearly forthat early miss. Langer made 35 off 35 balls before edging one fromHarbhajan Singh to Rahul Dravid at first slip.Mark Waugh who has not had the best of series coming into the ChennaiTest, must have thanked his good fortune as Dighe missed an easystumping when he had made just nine. Dighe has had a nightmare of adebut match, extending charity to the best professionals in the gametoday.Mark Waugh too was in attacking mood as he stepped out to loftKulkarni for a massive straight six. He looked to be in excellenttouch and heading for a big score He laced his elegant knock withseven boundaries and a six to make 70 before mistiming a lofted ondrive off Bahatule; only to watch in agony as substitutefielder Hemang Badani ran back and took a good catch at extra cover.Mark Waugh and Hayden added 150 runs in their third wicketpartnership. That was the last success of the day for the Indians. Steve Waugh toomade it clear that he intended to dominate the bowling, playing histrademark heave-ho over mid-wicket for a huge six. Only theintroduction of Sachin Tendulkar in the final session of the day sawthe run rate slow down a little. Hayden and Steve Waugh have puttogether an unbroken partnership of 109 for the fourth wicket.Matthew Lawrence Hayden who plays for the Queensland Bulls, has had amemorable tour so far, scoring a hundred in Mumbai and missing out ona hundred in Kolkata by just three runs. Today he took the opportunityto demolish the Indian attack as he smashed his way to an unbeaten 147off 249 balls with the help of five mighty sixes and a dozenboundaries. What has been most heartening from an Australian point of view is thetemperament and technique of this big man, Hayden. All day along hekept a cool head to negotiate the turn and bounce the Indian spinnerswere getting off the pitch. He used his feet remarkably well tosmother the spin and on occasions to play the lofted shot. But it wasthe sweep shot he played to such perfection that destroyed the Indianspinners, who otherwise would have created a panic amongst the Aussiebatsmen.
