انتقد أنطونيو كونتي، المدير الفني لفريق توتنهام، القرار الغريب بتأجيل ديربي شمال لندن أمام آرسنال في بطولة الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز.

وكان من المفترض أن يلتقي الفريقان يوم الأحد الماضي على ملعب توتنهام، في الجولة الثانية والعشرين من البطولة.

وقررت رابطة الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز تأجيل تلك المباراة بناءً على طلب آرسنال لعدم توافر عدد كافِ من اللاعبين لدى الجانرز.

وبرر آرسنال موقفه بغياب عدة لاعبين بسبب إصابات كورونا، والإصابات العضلية، إلى جانب وجود لاعبين مشاركين في كأس أمم إفريقيا.

وقال كونتي في تصريحات نشرتها صحيفة “ميرور” الإنجليزية: “أعتقد أن النادي أدلى ببيان وأظهر خيبة أملنا من القرار، كان قرارًا غريبًا”.

وأضاف: “يجب أن أعترف أن هذه هي المرة الأولى في حياتي التي يؤجل فيها الدوري المباريات بسبب الإصابات، أنا مندهش للغاية”.

وواصل: “شعوري هو أنه عندما تكون هناك إمكانية للعب، يجب أن تلعب، عادةً ما يكون تأجيل المباريات بسبب الواجب الدولي”.

وأردف: “لدينا مشكلة كبيرة يجب حلها وهي كوفيد، في هذه الحالة فقط، ولكن بالنسبة لمواقف أخرى هذه هي المرة الأولى لي في حياتي بصراحة”.

Protagonista do Fluminense, Gustavo Scarpa não pensa em sair do clube no momento, como revelou em entrevista exclusiva ao LANCE!. According to a report by Claret & Hugh, West Ham United are now committed to bringing defender Craig Dawson onto the payroll permanently, with David Moyes deciding some time back that he wanted a permanent deal regardless of his obligation-to-buy clause.

Indeed, as per the Irons insiders, West Ham had already made the call over Dawson becoming a permanent player, with the 30-year-old having been a revelation since coming to the London Stadium on loan.

The defender, who has started 14 Premier League games this season (WhoScored), took a while to work his way into the side but has managed to usurp the likes of Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop over the course of the campaign.

He is currently a mainstay in Moyes’ backline, and the manager has apparently already made up his mind on a permanent deal for Dawson, with the club set to sign him for around £3m.

Claret & Hugh added that GSB are committed to this transfer regardless of whether Dawson hits the number of games needed to trigger his obligation-to-buy clause, which seems inevitable judging by Moyes’ recent admission that it was ‘very close’.

Given his form over this season, it seems obvious why Moyes made up his mind about the 30-year-old a while ago.

Bringing Dawson to east London permanently for just £3m has been described as a potentially ‘staggering’ deal by pundit Noel Whelan (Football Insider), and it’s hard to argue with his assessment.

Sunderland have had a horrible habit in recent years of letting their academy gems walk through the exit door for not very much money.

Sam Greenwood was one of the first to start the trend. He departed Sunderland for Arsenal in 2018 and is now on the cusp of senior football with Leeds United.

Josh Maja is the most high profile case. His agent convinced him his future lay elsewhere and he left for Bordeaux in January 2019. Now playing at Fulham in the Premier League, there seems to be a familiar trend here.

Other young prospects like Joe Hugill, Bali Mumba, Luke Hewitson, Morten Spencer and Logan Pye have also all departed.

Though, if you cast your mind back to 2014, there is a name who is arguably doing better things than any of those mentioned above.

That happens to be John Egan. The centre-back never made a first-team appearance for the Mackems before being released seven years ago.

He subsequently joined Gillingham on a free transfer, before moving to Brentford and then Sheffield United.

The Irishman has been a wonderful presence in the Blades’ backline, very rarely missing a game. He played 44 matches during their promotion-winning campaign from the Championship in 2018/19 and since they were promoted, he’s been absent for only two games.

During that time, the 28-year-old has become an established international, earning 12 caps for his country, the Republic of Ireland.

Egan has very much become a classic case of one who got away. The defender is Premier League proven and was part of a backline that proved one of the best in the top-flight last term.

The former Sunderland academy graduate helped Sheffield United to the fourth-best defensive record in the entire division. They conceded 39 times, a better tally than Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea.

Egan has come on leaps and bounds over the last few years, being described as “rock-solid” by Chris Wilder.

It’s unsurprising, therefore, that his value has risen so dramatically. Released on a free transfer by Sunderland all those years ago, he is now rated at an eye-catching £9m by Transfermarkt.

That kind of fee is one to bulk at, especially for a club now plying their trade in League One. As the Black Cats tumbled down the leagues, it would have been difficult for them to keep hold of him.

That being said, they got rid of him at a time when they were in the Premier League. He has since proven he is up to the challenge of performing at that very level.

In a recent interview, Gabby Agbonlahor discussed the future of Glasgow Rangers centre-forward, Jermain Defoe, amid suggestions of a summer departure from Ibrox.

Despite having featured just 15 times across all competitions for Rangers so far this season, scoring five goals and registering two assists, Defoe recently claimed that he would love to stay on at Ibrox for another season, with his current deal at the club expiring at the end of the season.

However, Football Insider claim that Steven Gerrard would only consider offering the 38-year-old a new contract at the club if he were to take a significant pay cut to his £30,000 weekly wage.

The same website also appear to suggest that, following the news that Sunderland could be given £60 million to spend if they are to achieve promotion to the Championship this season, Defoe could well make a return for the Stadium of Light this summer.

However, when asked by Football Insider whether a move to Sunderland would be good for Defoe, Agbonlahor stated his belief that the veteran striker would rather stay in Scotland than play in the Championship.

He said: “It could be, maybe. But Jermain Defoe has said he wants to stay at Rangers so I think he’d rather stay where he is than go back to the Championship. Somebody like him, he’s so hungry to play football so he’ll probably continue somewhere.”

Considering just how little Defoe has featured for Rangers so far this season, in addition to the 38-year-old’s substantial weekly wage, it would not appear to make a great deal of sense for Gers to offer the centre-forward a new deal at the club this summer, despite the player’s preference to stay on at Ibrox.

However, whether or not it is indeed Sunderland who come calling for Defoe is something that will only be discovered come the end of the season.
