West Ham have been tipped to test Rangers’ resolve for lockdown rebel Calvin Bassey this summer by former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips.

What’s the word?

Steven Gerrard named and shamed five players – Bassey, Brian Kinnear, Bongani Zungu, Dapo Mebude and Nathan Patterson – who were allegedly caught breaking lockdown rules at an illegal house party last weekend.

All five find themselves in hot water with the Scottish FA set to launch an investigation into the matter that could mean further sanctions for the aforementioned players, with Zungu and Bassey having only just joined the club in the summer.

Phillips told Football Insider: “I think they will have an eye on the situation.

“West Ham might think to test the water in the summer just in case the club do want to move him on.

“It is a tough one because when you make a mistake everyone jumps on you but Stevie G isn’t daft. I think he will give him the benefit of the doubt.

“I’d presume that he wants to keep Bassey for next season. The last thing you want to do is win the Championship and then get rid of one of your best young player because he has slipped up during the previous season.

“Bassey is a talented player so I would be surprised if Stevie G was to move him on. If anyone was to make an enquiry I think he would squash that straight away.”

Stand firm

Gerrard has shown a ruthless streak when it comes to dealing with those unfortunate souls who have crossed the boundary but he also needs to look at the bigger picture.

Yes, Bassey broke coronavirus protocols. And yes, we might be being just a tad hypocritical – after all, we didn’t afford George Edmundson and Jordan Jones with such comfort and luxury.

Rangers are trying to push on to the next level under Gerrard and the Rangers manager knows he needs his best players around him if they are to take the next step in their development.

On the one hand, Gerrard wants to set a certain precedent about the level of discipline and respect he demands from his players, on the other he will only know too well how selling a young prospect like current Chelsea star Billy Gilmour can cause the club irreparable financial damage in the long-term.

He has even openly admitted how important Bassey is to his future plans for the 54-time Scottish champions, describing him as a “rough diamond” who can be turned into the finished article.

Despite his age, the 21-year-old left-back has settled into life at Ibrox in a rather promising fashion, barring his most recent indiscretion.

Full of energy and tenacity, the young defender has demonstrated an insatiable appetite for work and a fighting spirit. Indeed, he’s extremely effective at winning the ball back for his team, as evident by his one interception per 90 in the Scottish Premiership, that being the sixth-best out of the entire Rangers squad and better than the likes of Connor Goldson and Filip Helander.

Relishing working under Gerrard’s tutelage, Bassey will undoubtedly continue become a key component as Rangers take the next steps towards the next phase of their development.

For all of the above reasons mentioned, therefore, Rangers shouldn’t even begin to entertain such an offer if the opportunity arises.

If and when Odsonne Edouard decides to finally depart Celtic, it will be a sad day. However, it will be yet more reality for the Hoops that Parkhead is not a club for the biggest of big names.

Time and time again we’ve seen their best players venture elsewhere in Europe in search of becoming major stars. For some, it proves game-changing. Virgil Van Dijk has since become one of the most imperious defenders in world football, for instance.

If Edouard leaves, few would bet against him becoming one of the most prolific strikers in Europe’s top five leagues. Capable of bulldozing his way past players, the Frenchman also possesses an element of technical grace.

He is a complete forward, a rarity in the modern game. Therefore, when he does depart, it will leave the Hoops in the lurch.

Behind him, they don’t have a wealth of firepower. Albian Ajeti has scored once since September while Leigh Griffiths has just five SPFL strikes to his name in 2020/21.

As for Patryk Klimala, his time at Celtic has never taken off. After his move in January 2020, he played just 15 minutes of league football last season. He’s hardly been a pillar of consistency this term either.

The Polish striker has scored three times in all competitions and his latest performance against Aberdeen was devoid of any quality. He missed a sitter in the first half and had 13 fewer touches than goalkeeper Scott Bain. On top of that, he made just five accurate passes all match.

For Klimala, you have to wonder whether he’ll ever be any good to play for Celtic. Fortunately, they have a player waiting in the wings ready to make an impact next season.

That happens to be Vakoun Bayo. Like Klimala, he hardly typifies consistency; he has scored just two times in 17 outings for the Bhoys.

However, he’s starting to prove himself on loan in the French second tier for Toulouse. The Ivorian has seven goals this term, three of which have come in his last eight outings.

Bayo netted against Amiens last weekend in a goal that typified his qualities. He controlled the ball delightfully, raced clear of the defence and then poked the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper. With qualities like that, he is certainly more athletic than any of Griffiths, Ajer or Klimala.

Speaking about the forward a few years ago, Chris Sutton only had praise for the 24-year-old: “He has some really good raw attributes. I think he’s powerful, and he is good in the air,” he said.

So, could he be the most natural heir to Edouard’s Celtic throne? Of course, he needs to be more prolific in front of goal but in terms of the raw attributes he possesses, he surely stands the best chance of succeeding him out of their current options.

The new manager would certainly do worse than handing Bayo a second chance next season.

Quando a temporada 2016 começou, o torcedor tricolor viu na memória de um passado recente e na novidade que acabara de chegar as bases da esperança por um ano bem próximo da perfeição. Líder em campo, Fred ganhou uma companhia no protagonismo. Diego Souza, que foi cria de Xerém, retornou após uma década de passagens por equipes de Europa, Ásia e também do futebol nacional. Era a dupla perfeita. Só que, quase três meses se passaram e a realidade ainda caminha na contramão da expectativa.

Dos 11 jogos oficias realizados pelo time, entre Carioca e Primeira Liga, apenas quatro tiveram a presença de ambos. A primeira vez terminou com sabor um pouco amargo: empate com o Madureira, por 3 a 3, em Macaé. Depois, uma goleada (4 a 0 sobre o Tigres) levantou o astral nas Laranjeiras. Porém, as lesões castigaram o atacante da camisa 9, que foi desfalque em algumas ocasiões. Ainda assim, ele conseguiu alcançar o terceiro posto na lista dos maiores artilheiros da história do clube (hoje com 273 gols). Fred e Diego estiveram juntos em outras duas oportunidades, mas sem motivos para comemorar: derrotas nos clássicos para Flamengo (1 a 2) e Botafogo (0 a 2). Esta última, por sinal, ocasionou a demissão do técnico Eduardo Baptista. No total, acumularam dois reveses, uma vitória e um empate.

Só com Fred em ação, o desempenho é ainda pior: duas derrotas (0 a 1 – Atlético-PR / 1 a 3 – Volta Redonda) e uma amenizadora goleada (4 a 0 – Tigres do Brasil). Foram nove gols: seis de Fred e três de Diego. Atualmente, a parceria está há seis jogos sem balançar as redes adversárias. Hoje, no Pacaembu, o atacante volta ao time após quatro partidas fora devido a um edema na coxa esquerda. Para Levir, o sucesso desse “casamento” não está ligado a criação de um novo desenho do Tricolor no gramado.

– Não diria ser necessário as mudanças táticas. Mas os dois têm que se adaptar ao sistema tático, isso sim. Tem a questão do conjunto: se funciona com o time, se ataca bem, passa bem, defende bem… Depende muito do acerto tático do time e do aproveitamento tático dos dois – analisou o treinador.

وقال كلوب في تصريحات نشرتها شبكة “بي بي سي” العالمية: “بالتأكيد، لقد كان فوز مستحق تمامًا لـ ليستر سيتي، كانت مباراة غريبة جدًا، لم نكن جيدين بما يكفي، كان ما يزال لدينا فرص كافية، ما فعلناه بالكرات لم يكن صحيحًا، لقد لعبنا مباراة سيئة حقًا، كانت هزيمة مستحقة”.

وأضاف: “صنع القرار كان لدينا ضعيفًا، ربما القليل من الحظ كان مفقودًا، هذا هو الحال، كان يجب أن نحظى بالمزيد من تلك اللحظات، كان لدينا ما يكفي لتحقيق الفوز، ولكن إذا خسرت، فأنت تكون بحاجة إلى المزيد منهم”.

واستكمل: “لقد سددوا تسديدة واحدة على المرمى، لم يكن لديهم الكثير من الفرص، كان يجب أن ندافع بشكل أفضل، نفعل ذلك عادةً، لماذا لم نفعل ذلك اليوم هذا يصعب تفسيره، كان هناك الكثير من العروض أقل من المستوى الطبيعي، ولا يوجد تفسير”.

وتابع: “إنها فجوة كبيرة مع مانشستر سيتي، هذه ليست مشكلتي في الوقت الحالي، إذا لعبنا كرة القدم العادية، كرة قدم ليفربول، لدينا فرصة للفوز بمزيد من المباريات”.

واختتم: “الهزيمة هي هزيمة، علينا أن نتعلم وسنفعل ذلك، أول شيء علينا ألا نقوم بذلك مرة أخرى، فقدنا إيقاعنا ولم نكن هادئين بما يكفي من أجل استعادته، هذا خطأنا”.

Steve Bruce must strive to ease the emerging tension in his goalkeeper ranks after Karl Darlow was tipped to quit Newcastle United this summer.

That’s according to former England international Paul Robinson, who told Football Insider that Darlow may look for a route out of St. James’ Park after losing his place in the side to Martin Dubravka.

Darlow had started each of the Magpies’ Premier League fixtures this term after Dubravka sustained a heel injury during pre-season, but was ousted for last Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Reports by The Times claimed Darlow was ‘angered’ by the way the situation was handled, having only been informed of Dubravka starting two days after speculation first appeared in the press.

Members of the United first-team were also surprised at how the decision was instigated, with Darlow proving to be one of the Toon’s most consistent performers this season.

Robinson believes Darlow could now look for a move to another Premier League side in the summer, should Dubravka remain as Bruce’s first-choice shot-stopper from here on.

“It is important now that clubs have two top goalkeepers. Almost every club has a very able number two,” the former Tottenham ‘keeper said.

“Karl Darlow is in the best form of his career. He can probably feel hard done by to have been brought out against Wolves. He has had a good run of games and played very well. The big problem he has is that Dubravka, a world-class goalkeeper, is sat on the bench waiting.

“Dubravka did not put a foot wrong before his injury. It was only a matter of time before he came back in because managers are loyal to their number ones.

“Darlow always had a difficult task. What Darlow has done is given himself an opportunity of playing again, if Dubravka doesn’t perform, or getting a move elsewhere in the Premier League.”

Any further conflict between Bruce and Darlow will only increase the tensions emerging at Newcastle, who may have to consider cashing in on the 30-year-old at the end of the season if the situation cannot be resolved.

Darlow had plenty of suitors two summers ago when it was expected that he would leave St. James’ Park, and his stock will have likely risen due to his efforts between the sticks this term.

Bruce has previously praised Darlow for producing a number of top-draw saves and exceeding expectations, while Sky Sports pundit Matt Murray was adamant that the number one jersey was his to lose earlier in the year.

“Since Darlow has come in, he’s been absolutely awesome. He makes save after save, even games where they’ve been beaten heavily – against Manchester United he was still excellent. He was Man of the Match against Tottenham,” Murray said, via quotes by The Shields Gazette.

But, like Phillips points out, Bruce will need an able number two who can step in should Dubravka suffer a dip in form or an injury, and that may not be Freddie Woodman either once his Swansea City loan deal expires.

Woodman is not believed to be willing to return to Newcastle just to take a seat on the bench, having kept 17 clean sheets in 30 Championship appearances this season. He is also rumoured to be a target for Arsenal, who are striving to land competition for Bernd Leno.

If Woodman will not return and Darlow is unhappy being the back-up again, Bruce will have to hit crisis mode to secure a suitable replacement for the duo when funds are likely to be tight, at best.

Celtic interim manager John Kennedy has reacted to reports that Leicester City are set to win the race to sign Hoops striker Odsonne Edouard.

The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from Parkhead after scoring 81 goals and providing 35 assists in 160 appearances (Transfermarkt), with Arsenal being one of those clubs keen to secure his services.

Despite this, the Daily Mail recently revealed that Brendan Rodgers’ side are closing in on a £15m move for Edouard, who was initially purchased from Paris Saint Germain back in 2018.

Edouard, who was recently described as “magnificent” by former boss Neil Lennon, was the subject of conversation from Kennedy ahead of his side’s trip to Dundee United on Sunday.

Cited by the Daily Record, he said: “That’s far too cheap for my liking.” Kennedy went on to say that the club will not be pressured into selling their best players due to financial power and that the same has occurred with star centre-back Kristoffer Ajer in the past 12 months.

Transfer Tavern Verdict

Kennedy is taking a firm stance in terms of protecting his best players – which is something that the supporters will appreciate.

However, because of their disastrous season during 2020/21, missing out on Champions League football could mean that Edouard may push for an exit – depending on where the Foxes finish in the Premier League this season.

The final standings of both leagues come May will paint a better picture of the situation.

Comparado a Asprilla, um dos maiores ídolos da história do Atletico Nacional e da seleção da Colômbia, o jovem afirma que será ainda maior que seu ídolo.

– As pessoas dizem que somos parecidos, mas obviamente com as metas e com os propósitos que tenho a curto e longo prazo, vou ser melhor que Faustino – disse, em entrevista ao jornal El Tiempo, de Medellín (COL).
