Wolves can put European doubters to the sword this season

[ad_pod ]For a host of teams, the Europa League has been nothing short of a poisoned chalice. Many sides are reduced to starting their season in the murky depths of Europe, playing on grounds that wouldn’t be fit for cattle, let alone a bunch of professional footballers.Yet, at the end of it, Champions League football looms for the winners. The pros and the cons to the competition are both huge. Do well in Europe and it’ll significantly enhance your reputation, as well as producing greater income, but it could also be incredibly detrimental to a club’s domestic performances. However, exiting in the early rounds can also be embarrassing, especially playing against the types of opposition that arise in qualifying.

Wolves enter the competition in the second qualifying phase this week as they take on Crusaders.

It seems like something straight out of a Medieval drama as opposed to a football team, but that’s the magic of the Europa League.

Wolves will be expected to come through that tie with ease but after seeing West Ham defeated by European minnows Astra Giurgiu, you can’t write anything off.

The Midlands outfit come into this campaign off the back of comparisons with Burnley, however.

After finishing seventh in the Premier League in 2017/18, they crashed and burned before enduring a nightmare start domestically.

Undeniably Wolves could struggle with their squad depth. In 2018/19, they used just 21 players in the top-flight, two of which in Ivan Cavaleiro and Helder Costa have since departed.

They could, therefore, be staring down the barrel of the dreaded second season syndrome.

That’s unless they prove their quality and skill which many of their players have already displayed on the European stage.

After all, this is a squad filled with quality, even if it is a small one.

Among their ranks they have the likes of Rui Patricio and Joao Moutinho, two men to have won the European Championships.

Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota, meanwhile, were in the squad when Portugal achieved Nations League glory this summer.

On July 15th 2018, just under two weeks before Burnley’s Europa League campaign got underway, the value of their squad was a mere £141.1m, per Transfermarkt.

Wolves, by comparison, go into this season’s competition with a squad value of £248.1m – accurate as of July 15th 2019 – and that yawning disparity serves as a telling indicator of the clear difference in quality.

However, they will have to overcome a problematic European tradition in doing so.

Since the team that finished seventh in the Premier League were granted access to the Champions League’s sister competition, no side has ever been beyond the ground stage.

Try as they might, Southampton, West Ham, Everton and Burnley all failed.

Three of them didn’t even go beyond the qualifying phase, which tells you all you need to know about the task on Wolves’ hands.

Nuno hasn’t yet added to his squad this summer, despite moves for Patrick Cutrone, who scored four times in the Europa League last term, and Ruben Dias being touted.

Those two players would add far greater depth to a side that lacks it considerably.

A sparsity of options is one of the main issues that could reap havoc as Wolves aim to be successful in continental football, but that’s no secret.

If you don’t know the words to the Joao Moutinho chant in the video below, are you even a real Wolves fan?…

What’s arguably set Wolves up best, though, is their pre-season.

Their players already look fit and ready to go, despite various members of their squad featuring in international tournaments.

Diogo Jota has come back and scored twice in the Premier League Asia Trophy, whilst young prodigy Morgan Gibbs-White is already showing incredibly promising signs. The only concern lies with Raul Jimenez, who has just won the Gold Cup with Mexico.

But the fact is that Wolves don’t warrant Burnley comparisons. They have greater resources and to put it simply, their players have more experience at the top level.

Beyond their Portuguese contingent, Jonny and Leander Dendoncker have also played in the Europa League, further supplementing that point.

The rigmarole of playing on a Thursday and then on a Sunday can be a straining one, but many of their players have already been put through this, jetting off around the continent before playing at the weekend too.

Breaking English tradition will be difficult, but there is evidence to suggest that Nuno’s men can do it and put their doubters to the sword.

Arsenal shouldn’t worry themselves with missing out on Everton-bound Moise Kean

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal made an attempt to sign Juventus star Moise Kean, but the lack of guaranteed first-team football saw the now Everton-bound striker turn them down.

What’s the word?

In a blockbuster move, Kean is set to join the Toffees for a reported £36m, but The Daily Mail claim that Arsenal got in touch with the player’s representative, Mino Raiola, to explore a deal of their own.

However, the report claims that following the Gunners’ refusal to promise him a starting spot next season, the 19-year-old opted against the switch and looks set to finalise a move to Goodison Park this summer.

A blessing in disguise

There is no doubting that Kean certainly has the talent to play for many of European football’s top sides. The Italy international enjoyed somewhat of a breakthrough campaign last season, scoring six times in 13 Serie A appearances.

But the Gunners have their own promising striker waiting in the wings in Eddie Nketiah. Signing Kean would have demoted the 20-year-old down the pecking order, and perhaps in even worse circumstances, see him pursue a move away himself.

Unai Emery has already indicated that he is willing to give his talented academy players the chance to shine, and insisted that Nketiah could be a major part of the squad as a foil to the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

So whilst the Gunners may initially rue missing out on Kean, Nketiah’s presence should surely help ease some of that pain.

Leeds target Josip Vukovic has trait that could help Helder Costa and Co thrive

[ad_pod ]

According to a report by talkSPORT, Leeds United are one of three clubs in the race to sign Maritimo midfielder Josip Vukovic, and one of the stand out attributes of his game suggests he would be hugely important to the club’s plethora of wingers next season.

What’s the word, then?

Well, talkSPORT report that the Whites, along with Premier League duo Aston Villa and Southampton, are all keen on the Croatian, who could be available for as little as £1.5m.

TalkSPORT suggest that any move for the 27-year-old could depend on whether Kalvin Phillips remains at Elland Road or not, with the same source saying Villa are one of the clubs interested in the Englishman.

The report adds that Vukovic has already rejected offers from Lille, Benfica and from an unnamed Russian club as he targets a move to England.

Important trait

Phillips starred in something of a quarterback role for the Yorkshire outfit in 2018/19, averaging a remarkable 4.6 long balls per game, according to WhoScored, as he looked to win the ball back and then set the team on their way from an attacking point of view.

Watch fans explain why the Football League is better than the Premier League in the video below…

Vukovic’s numbers aren’t quite at that level, but he still averaged 2.7 per game for Maritimo last term, suggesting that he is a similar sort of player to the impressive 23-year-old.

With Leeds already having the likes of Ezgjan Alioski and Pablo Hernandez – and with Helder Costa a new addition alongside the returning Jack Clarke and Jack Harrison – Marcelo Bielsa has a wealth of wing talent at his disposal next term.

To get the best out of them, the Argentine needs a player he can rely to find those passes if Phillips leaves or even if he stays and his absent for some reason, and Vukovic looks to fit the bill.

At £1.5m he wouldn’t break the bank, but you would also think that the Whites would target a more experienced centre-back before they move for a defensive midfielder – just ask some of their fans who have been complaining on Twitter.

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang showered with praise after decisive goal

[ad_pod ]

It was tough, a bit sloppy and extremely difficult at times but when all is said and done, Arsenal got their three points and the clean sheet away from home on Sunday.

Newcastle were formidable opponents and neither team really shone particularly more than the other. The Gunners had their Gabon talisman on their side, however.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was once again the difference-maker, bagging the only goal that separated the two teams after 90 minutes of fighting at St James’ Park.

Shortly after the triumph, Aubameyang took to social media and

/B1B6zW-HY_9/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram to celebrate the victory.

And it didn’t really take long until his teammates and other stars flooded to Instagram, congratulating Aubameyang on securing the victory for his team and just swarming him with great messages.

Joe Willock told him he actually saved Arsenal, which is very much exactly what happened while Mesut Ozil just told him he did well.

There were many others drooling over his performance as well. Alexandre Lacazette just said “thank you” while Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele replied with a series of emojis.

Next, Arsenal will welcome Burnley to the Emirates on August 17.

Leeds’ summer policy has positives that can prove game-changing going forward

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

For Leeds, this summer was very much about taking the rough with the smooth.

It was a whirlwind and a roller-coaster experience for those involved at the club but they’re now finally out of the other side.

And in their grasp they still rather remarkably have Kalvin Phillips. They also have Mateusz Klich, a player who had attracted the eyes of the Premier League.

Phillips was no stranger to interest either, fielding it from Aston Villa, Wolves and Bournemouth.

But as Leeds rejected £35m worth of offers for various players, both Pontus Jansson and Kemar Roofe still departed.

If there was ever a topsy-turvy window, this was it. Indeed, concerns may still lie surrounding the defence after the Whites failed to bring in anyone other than Ben White but the business they have done must be looked at in a positive way.

Why? Because it could prove to be game-changing in the future.

Leeds decided to operate this summer with the policy that they’d bring in players on loan.

Through the doors came White, Helder Costa, Jack Harrison, Jack Clarke, Eddie Nketiah and Illan Meslier.

Three of those players all have clauses specifying they can return permanently next term. Those lie in the contracts of Costa, Harrison and Meslier who prove that Leeds have been particularly meticulous in their operations.

It may have been a frustrating period, but ultimately they look well set for the future.

Costa and Harrison will give depth out wide whilst it’s already been detailed how big a fan manager Marcelo Bielsa is of White, even if they do lack options at centre-back.

That being said, their attack, with the addition of Nketiah still looks a considerable threat. He is a player who scored against Bayern Munich and Fiorentina in pre-season whilst his record at youth level, scoring 46 goals, speaks for itself.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

However, the fact they can make three of those players permanent parts of the furniture next summer bodes well, even if they don’t achieve promotion.

Securing players on loan means they won’t have unnecessary baggage to ship out if they do go up whilst Aston Villa have already shown the benefit of loan signings like Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause who both returned fairly simply.

For Leeds, it may not have been the best summer, but there are definitely positives if you look further enough ahead.

Given financial fair play, this is one of the best outcomes they could have had.

Of course, achieving promotion is the ultimate goal, but there are reasons to be encouraged.
