Crystal Palace: Fans don’t want club captain Luka Milivojevic back in the starting eleven

Many Palace fans would not like to currently see club captain Luka Milivojevic return to the starting eleven, as without him, the South London side have won their last three in a row (BBC Sport).

Eagles fans have been replying to an article by The Athletic journalist Matt Woosnam who asked the question whether any of the current midfielders (James McArthur, Cheikhou Kouyate and James McCarthy) should be dropped for the Serbian midfielder.

Since his arrival from Olympiacos for £13.59 million in January 2017, Luka has been key to the side, making 111 Premier League appearances and scoring 26 times (Transfermarkt). Most of these have been from the penalty spot, for which he boasts the stat of a 95% conversion rate (Crystal Palace).

However he has not been at his best this season and also got sent off for misconduct in the FA Cup tie against Derby, something which could have been easily avoided, so maybe a break from the first team is the best thing for Serbian.

Here are what Palace fans had to say on the 28-year-old midfielder:

How Palace can clear £19.06m from their annual wage bill

Crystal Palace have effectively secured their Premier League status for another season after reaching 39 points.

Though they are still one point shy of the safe haven that the 40 point mark notoriously brings, a challenge for Europe looks more likely than relegation at this stage given they are just four points shy of 6th place Wolves.

How the current suspension of football influences the season, though, still remains to be seen.

With that in mind, Steve Parish and the rest of the Palace decision makers will surely be looking ahead to the summer window in order to draw up a coherent transfer strategy.

New arrivals in forward positions are surely a must for a side who have only scored more goals (26) than Newcastle United and rock-bottom Norwich City this season, but they will need plenty of investment in order to achieve that.

At the beginning of the current season, Dominic Fifield suggested that a hefty wage bill dictated their lack of activity in the transfer market.

That simply needs to change if Palace want to progress and just a handful of departures could give the Eagles much more financial flexibility.

Ahead of the summer window, Football FanCast look at how Parish can trim £19.06m from the wage bill.

Likely to leave

Scott Dann has played just nine Premier League games this season and, considering he is 33 years old, it is difficult to envisage a scenario in which his contract is extended.

Dann is due to become a free agent in June and that presents a perfect opportunity to trim £3.12m from the wage bill.

Those who aren’t warranting their wage

This is where things get interesting. Max Meyer’s reputation preceded him when he arrived at Selhurst Park but his career has stagnated in south London.

The Germany international will turn 25 this year and his career is already in danger of getting away from him. Considering his £6.5m yearly salary, it would be best for both parties if he moved on this summer.

Christian Benteke, who earns £6.24m per year, is a less clear cut case. His goal scoring record in the past three seasons has been abysmal to say the least, with a return of just five goals in a staggering firmly illustrating his fall from grace. However, there are clear reasons why Hodgson has stuck by him, his lack of alternatives notwithstanding, and some of his linkup play of late has been eye catching.

The bottom line is that he doesn’t score enough goals for a £120k per week striker and he doesn’t appear well suited to Hodgson’s style of play. A clean break this summer will allow both player and club to progress into a brighter future.

Finally, Connor Wickham is clearly not cut out for top flight football and at £3.2m per year he’s simply draining valuable resources.

If the club manage to get the aforementioned quartet out of the club, Parish will have an extra £19.06m per year to play with.

Man United’s Wan-Bissaka compared with TAA by Ferdinand

England have a number of strong options at right-back currently and Rio Ferdinand believes Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Trent Alexander-Arnold both possess attributes which the other can’t match.

What did he say?

A lot has been made of Alexander-Arnold and his importance in the current Liverpool side that looks destined for the title. Jamie Carragher has likened him to Kevin De Bruyne and his 12 Premier League assists mean he offers a devastating threat going forward.

That is one area where the £36m-rated Wan-Bissaka doesn’t particularly excel, though there have been signs recently that he is making progress, playing in a brilliant cross for Anthony Martial’s goal at Chelsea a few weeks ago for example.

He has also made Manchester United more difficult to score against, with the Red Devils conceding 28 goals in his 26 league games, compared to the 54 goals they allowed past them in the 2018/19 Premier League season.

As a result, Gareth Southgate has a very difficult decision to make when it comes to England selection, and it seems that Ferdinand too finds it challenging to pick between the pair.

Speaking on Instagram, via the Independent, he said:

“If you moulded them two players together, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Trent Alexander-Arnold, you’ve got the best player.

“On the ball [Wan-Bissaka is] nowhere near as good as Trent, but Trent defensively one-on-one isn’t anywhere near as good as Wan-Bissaka, so if you had both of them you’ve got the ultimate machine.

“It depends on the game, If I knew I was going to have to defend a lot and I need someone to lock down the winger I’m bringing [Wan-Bissaka] on.”

Lessons to be learned

While both players have key attributes in specific areas, what makes them so effective is that they each suit their respective teams perfectly.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made improvements to the defence and by adding pace in attack he has made the Red Devils an efficient counter-attacking team.

His methods were best evidenced in the 2-1 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad earlier this season. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were devastating on the break but they were only able to provide victory due to a stalwart defence, with Wan-Bissaka arguably the stand-out.

He dealt with Raheem Sterling expertly and made an astounding five tackles and seven clearances. The 22-year-old also made eight tackles in the recent reverse fixture against the Citizens and has twice achieved 10 tackles in one game – against Norwich and Southampton.

Alexander-Arnold, by comparison, cannot live up to that standard, with his five tackles against Everton the most he’s managed in a single match this term.

Liverpool, though, do not come under the same type of pressure as the Red Devils, but he should still watch Wan-Bissaka’s positioning and take some notes, as otherwise he will be caught out at the highest level.

Quickfire Questions: Can you get 100% on this Man United prodigies quiz?

In an England home match against Kosovo earlier this season, for example, he was too advanced up the pitch and failed to get back in time to stop a goal after a turnover in midfield. Meanwhile, a lack of awareness against Watford recently for Ismaila Sarr’s opener from a throw-in also highlighted his shortcomings.

In other news, the Red Devils may face a struggle to hold onto a young player amid interest from another top Premier League club…

Celtic fans react to club post of iconic win over arch-rivals

Loads of Celtic fans have been responding to a post from the club’s official Twitter account, as they relived a classic Old Firm win from 1998.

With no football for the foreseeable future, clubs have been forced to find new ways to entertain their fans on social media. For the Hoops, that appears to be by broadcasting classic matches on their Youtube channel, and this weekend they streamed the 5-1 win over their arch-rivals from November 1998.

The match was marked by two particularly memorable performances from two of the club’s greatest talents, with Lubo Moravcik and Henrik Larsson both finding the net twice, while Mark Burchill capped the mauling off with the fifth goal.

Per The Celtic Wiki, it was fan favourite ‘Lubo’ who really stole the show, dazzling Celtic Park in a performance that “outshone everyone”. The nifty 5 foot 8 ace went on to spend four years at the club, winning the league in both 2001 and 2002.

Spurs fans react to fresh links to AS Roma ace Cengiz Under

It feels like Cengiz Under’s name has been linked with Tottenham for what feels like eternity.

The Turkey international appeared to be heading to north London way back in the summer of 2017, before Serie A giants AS Roma stole a march on them to sign him.

Despite the move, the rumours linking him with a switch to the Lilywhites never failed to die away, and now, according to Italian publication Tuttomercatoweb, Spurs are once again interested in luring him to the Premier League.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

After hearing about the fresh reports linking them with a move for Under, Spurs fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on their potential summer transfer target.

A couple of fans revealed that a move for Under wouldn’t make sense, particularly when they have other priorities to worry about, namely up front.

One Spurs supporter meanwhile brought Leandro Damiao’s name into the conversation, the Brazilian of course another player who was annually linked with a move to Spurs ever since the Andre Villas-Boas days.

As is always the case with the transfer window, there’s always that one player linked to every club who seems destined to make that move, but never actually does.

With Spurs well-stocked in the wide areas, particularly after the January arrival of Steven Bergwijn from Dutch giants PSV, it’s difficult to see how the £21.6m-rated Under could realistically fit into Jose Mourinho’s first-team.

This may be one of those rumours that you take with a pinch of salt.

Meanwhile, Spurs must take this perfect chance to sign long-term target.

Spurs fans reminisce about Gareth Bale’s time in north London

It’s fair to say Gareth Bale will go down in the history books as one of Tottenham’s best ever players in recent memory.

Having arrived from Southampton, the Wales international broke out of his shell as a left-back, and developed into one of the world’s most devastating wingers, eventually earning a big-money move to European giants Real Madrid.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

In his time at Spurs, Bale played 203 times across all competitions, scoring 56 goals and providing a further 58 assists, and came up with some truly epic moments, not least that hat-trick at the San Siro against Inter in the Champions League.

Despite it being a few years since he left the club, Spurs fans have taken to Twitter to reminisce about their former talisman.

Some supporters of the north London side called on Bale to “come back”, with one fan in particular urging Daniel Levy to “bring him home”.

If the finances are right, then Levy can somehow work his magic in the transfer market, then it really would be a story for the ages to see Bale return home to north London.

He seemingly hasn’t quite settled into life off-the-pitch at Madrid, with teammate Thibaut Courtois publicly questioning his commitment to the cause.

As some Spurs fans have suggested, maybe it’s the perfect time for him to come back.

Crystal Palace: Fans go crazy reminiscing over ‘Crystanbul’

A lot of Crystal Palace fans are raving over a dramatic thriller against Liverpool which was played six years ago at Selhurst Park.

The club posted highlights of the game, in which recently promoted Palace were battling for safety and had to face the Reds who were fighting for the league title against Manchester City, via BBC Sport. No one could have expected the 90 minutes that the footballing world was about to see, as Liverpool eventually held a 3-0 lead and the away end were singing for them to score more.

However the final ten minutes saw a historic comeback as a deflected strike from Damien Delaney gave the club the faintest of hope, before a brace from Dwight Gayle including an 88th minute equaliser meant the South London side salvaged a draw and damaged Liverpool’s chances of winning the title.

The great comeback made Selhurst Park erupt and gave the Palace faithful a very memerable night under the lights in the division. The game is now dubbed ‘Crystanbul’ as the comeback was similar to Liverpool’s in the Champions League final in Istanbul.

Here is what fans had to say following the tweet:

Swansea fans react to the FA Cup quarter-final draw

[ad_pod ]

Swansea fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was revealed that they would be facing Manchester City at the Liberty Stadium in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The Swans managed to beat Brentford by four goals to one in the fifth round to secure their place in the last eight, although they will perhaps have been hoping for an easier opponent than the Citizens.

Just one game stands between Graham Potter leading his side out at Wembley, although every single Swansea player will have to bring their A-game if they are to overcome the reigning Premier League champions.

This is the first time that the pair have been put up against each other in the FA Cup, and is also the first meeting between the two since Swansea were relegated last season.

Let’s see how Swansea supporters on Twitter reacted after being given arguably the hardest draw out of any team left in the competition…

Aston Villa fans want Dean Smith out after defeat to West Brom

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter in frustrated fashion following Saturday’s 2-0 loss to West Brom at Villa Park.

The Villans have just one win from their last nine Championship games, and now sit tenth in the Championship table – the Midlands-based side are now nine points off the play-off positions with their chances of promotion fading quickly.

Villa sacked Steve Bruce and appointed Smith back in October after luring him away from his post at Brentford, but that switch hasn’t had the desired effect despite a promising start.

Sloppy mistakes that simply could not be accounted for by Smith saw the Baggies run out 2-0 winners at the weekend, but fans have been pointing the finger at the former Bees manager for the defeat.

It is quickly looking like a season destined for a mid-table position, and fans of the Villans have voiced their opinions on Twitter after yet another defeat…
