Danny Pugh excited by Leeds’ plan after promotion

A lot has changed at Leeds United since they last played in the Premier League, many a coupon has been won and lost, but one thing that has been a constant over the past 16 years is the support they get from the fanbase.

The Whites are once again topping the Championship attendance figures this term, and the fanbase is only growing as the Yorkshire club now have over 460k followers on Twitter.

A few months ago Angus Kinnear laid out plans to expand Elland Road to a 50,000 seater stadium if the club are promoted to the Premier League.

However, questions must be raised as to whether or not that’s a good idea. It wasn’t too long ago that Leeds were averaging crowds of under 25,000 in League One, so there’s no guarantee that they’d fill it.

However, one man who has played over 100 games for Leeds United believes that expanding the stadium could be genius.

Danny Pugh spoke exclusively to Football FanCast about Leeds’ planned expansion as well as if he thinks developing Elland Road would change anything about the atmosphere on a matchday.

“I think if they can keep it like it is it’d be brilliant,” said Pugh.

“Of course, Man City and West Ham moved from their stadiums so it’s different, but I think if Leeds do expand Elland Road and stay at Elland Road in the Premier League, I do think they’d fill it.

“It’s always a special atmosphere at Elland Road, and if you add 20,000 more or however many it would be, I think that’d be a little bit special.”

Of course, the expansion still relies on Leeds’ promotion, but Pugh clearly thinks that United would have no problems in filling a 50,000 capacity ground.

In other news, Leeds may want to make a U-turn on one man’s departure after a recent performance.

Celtic fans react to Aaron Hickey transfer report

Celtic have signed their fair share of project players in years gone by, such as Marian Shved and Eboue Kouassi, and a recent report from The Scottish Sun suggests another exciting teenager is on their radar.

Indeed, the report claims the Hoops are interested in signing lifelong fan Aaron Hickey from Hearts, but they are reluctant to meet the SPFL club’s asking price.

The 17-year-old left-back left Celtic for Hearts in 2017 and has since established himself as a regular in the starting XI despite his age.

The youngster, who turns 18 in June this year, has already started 18 times in the SPFL and chipped in at right-back and even central midfield where required, per Transfermarkt’s database.

Hickey is clearly a player with strong potential for future development, and there are many Celtic fans who believe the club should re-sign the former academy prospect.

While there is clearly a strong interest in bringing Hickey back to Celtic Park, it’s clear from the social media reaction that not everyone is convinced he is ready to step into Neil Lennon’s starting XI right now – a feeling prompting fans to recommend a deal which would see the youngster immediately return to Hearts on loan.

Not everyone is totally convinced by the reported target, though, as a contingent of supporters suggested the club should avoid a move altogether.

Considering Celtic’s supremacy in Scotland is under threat right now, it’s easy to understand why fans would prefer to see the club signing players with more experience.

Finally, this fan suggested the rumour doesn’t bode well for Boli Bolingoli and Greg Taylor…

Sunderland fans discuss the reasons behind the change in form

Sunderland had an absymal first-half of the season that didn’t stop with a change in manager, and it seemed that no matter what changes Phil Parkinson made, results were not getting any better.

At one point he had two wins from 14 games but a simple change to a five-at-the-back system brought a draw, then a crucial away win at Doncaster, and since that point the Black Cats haven’t looked back, with their seven-game unbeaten streak taking them back into the play-off places.

There is still considerable work to do but there is clearly a new-found confidence and belief that this squad can produce success, and the turnaround in results has been quite something.

Parkinson was heavily criticised and though supporters still believe they were right to do so – because they were – they have also given him credit where it’s due, including the decision to hire fitness coach Nick Allamby, which fans believe has really paid off.

As well as that, some of the fanbase have highlighted key individuals and the role they have played over the last few matches, namely Chris Maguire and Lynden Gooch – who scored a brilliant winner away at MK Dons last time out.

Over the last five games the pair have each made six and four goal contributions respectively, so their praise is well deserved, and if their manager can continue to get the best out of them then Sunderland will be in good hands.

There isn’t as much direct praise as Parkinson as there ought to be, though. He has worked wonders with a defence that has conceded four goals in six games and found a great balance throughout the team, as well as building a strong spirit in the squad thanks in part to the omission of Aiden McGeady from the first-team squad.

Idiots Abroad: Do you know where these famous Brits are playing now?

However, goalscorers are always likely to steal the limelight and that is the case here, with numerous fans picking out Gooch in particular.

In transfer news, Sunderland have been linked with another exciting player who could help to continue the recent good results.

Wolves fans swoon over Daniel Podence’s debut against Manchester United

Having joined from Olympiakos in a £16.6m deal in the last week of the January transfer window, Wolves fans would surely have been salivating at the prospect of seeing Daniel Podence in action.

And the 24-year-old came on to enjoy his debut for the club when he helped his side clinch a 0-0 draw with Manchester United on Saturday afternoon. The winger was thrown on for Adama Traore in the 76th minute, and in the limited time he was on the pitch at Old Trafford, he showed Nuno Espirito Santo and the travelling fans just exactly why they signed him.

As per Sofascore, he had one shot on goal blocked, played one key pass and cross, and also showed his defensive diligence by winning both of his ground duels, and making a tackle and interception a piece.

It was an all-round cameo from the Portuguese ace, and after watching his performance, Wolves fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the former Olympiakos man.

A couple of fans even drew comparisons between Podence and current Real Madrid star Eden Hazard.

One fan in particular meanwhile appeared to poke fun at United for spending £47m on their Portuguese January signing, Bruno Fernandes.

Having been given less than 15 minutes to shine by Nuno, Podence did everything he could to make the most of his opportunity. He almost grabbed the winner too, but saw his swivel and shot blocked by a recovering United defender very late on.

There was plenty of promise about his display, not least the fact he didn’t shy away from getting into challenges, and making a tackle.

For true Wolves fans only: How much did each of these players cost?

Shifting Traore from the first-team might be tricky, but Podence certainly showed enough to warrant a greater chance over the coming weeks and months.

Meanwhile, Wolves fans have been left to rue this man’s loan departure.

Leeds fans discuss Pablo Hernandez’s display against Nottingham Forest

In what was a disappointing result against Nottingham Forest, Leeds’ Pablo Hernandez didn’t enjoy the greatest of times.

The Spaniard isn’t currently in the greatest of form at the moment, with his blank against Forest taking him to just one goal in his last eight games in the league.

And his performance wasn’t spectacular either on Saturday. As per Sofascore, in the 59 minutes he was on the pitch before he was hooked for Tyler Roberts by Marcelo Bielsa, Hernandez had his only shot blocked, provided no accurate crosses, and lost possession 12 times.

After seeing his display, Leeds fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the 34-year-old.

Some Leeds fans pointed to his age as one of the reasons why he looks like he’s “past his best”, with one supporter in particular sarcastically applauding the fact they gave him a new contract.

One supporter in particular pointed to one particular moment in the first-half when he misplaced a simple pass.

Make no mistake about it, if Leeds are to secure promotion to the Premier League for next season, they are going to need some major goal contributions from those who play behind the striker.

And Hernandez is chief amongst that. The Whites desperately need the Spaniard to add more to his measly four goals and four assists this season, and that will in turn ease the pressure on the likes of Patrick Bamford and Jean-Kevin Augustin.

How Liverpool could line up at the beginning of the 2020/21 season

What a season it has been for Liverpool so far.

The Reds are currently a huge 22 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, and have won 24 out of their 25 matches so far in the top flight. Not only that, they also topped their Champions League group, and they have already got their hands on the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

Can you name the result these iconic Liverpool images belong to? Give it a go now…

A first league title in 30 years looks inevitable, but to keep themselves at the top of the pile, they will need to progress, and that could very well mean heavy investment in the summer. Here, we take a look at what their team could look like at the start of next season.

In goal, Alisson will keep his place. There is absolutely no need for the Reds to replace him – he won the Yachine Trophy last year, given to the best goalkeeper on the planet, and he is joint-top with Dean Henderson in the race for this year’s Premier League Golden Glove (9 clean sheets).

The back four, too, is likely to be unchanged. Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have 18 assists between them this season, whilst Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have kept eight clean sheets in their last nine games as a centre-back pairing. Ben White has been linked, but were he to arrive, he would likely be a squad player at best.

Midfield could be the first position to see a new arrival come in to the side. Sandro Tonali has been linked with Jurgen Klopp’s team – in January, Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness) said that the former Borussia Dortmund manager liked the 19-year-old a lot and that the Brescia owner, Massimo Cellino, would demand at least €50m (£42.5m). With one goal and four assists in Serie A this term, he would fit in nicely alongside Jordan Henderson.

Klopp could be compelled to change to a 4-2-3-1 formation – one he has used on numerous occasions this term – to make space for one new arrival.

First though, Jadon Sancho could be a recruit on the right wing. It has recently been reported that Borussia Dortmund want £126m for the England international – whilst that is a lot of money, the 15 goals and 16 assists he has in all competitions to date indicate that he would be worth every penny.

Mohamed Salah could find himself battling for his place in the starting XI against the former Manchester City man.

Roberto Firmino – in an attacking midfield role – and Sadio Mane would make it a formidable trio.

That leaves one space up front for Timo Werner. Liverpool are believed to be his preferred destination should he leave RB Leipzig in the summer, and he has a release clause of €60m (£51m) – not too bad for a 23-year-old striker with 25 goals already this season.

The Germany international’s arrival would spell danger for the rest of the Premier League – you wouldn’t bet against this side being just as dominant as this season’s team.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans react to Liverpool’s reported interest in one of their stars.

Leeds fans react to Liam McCarron’s strike for the Under-23s

Liam McCarron was on the scoresheet as Leeds United’s Under-23 side recorded a 4-1 win over Bolton Wanderers’ Under-23s on Monday afternoon.

And it was a smart finish from the 18-year-old winger, who collected a pass from Theo Hudson before finding the back of the net in emphatic fashion.

The first team are not exactly full of goals at the moment having failed to find the back of the net in five of their last six matches in all competitions.

And a lot of the Leeds supporters were impressed with McCarron’s effort.

A true test for any Leeds fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

One fan even took the chance to have a dig at Patrick Bamford, who remains Marcelo Bielsa’s first-choice striker despite his issues in the final third.

Indeed, the 26-year-old has failed to score in six of his last seven Championship appearances, drawing another blank against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Not everyone was impressed, though, with another supporter claiming that the “horrific defending” from Bolton played a key role in the goal.

The Whites are next in Championship action away to Brentford on Tuesday night, and there is simply no downplaying the importance of the contest.

Meanwhile, a number of Leeds supporters blasted the performance of one player in particular in the defeat at Forest last time out.

Moussa Sissoko responds to Spurs teammate Tanguy Ndombele’s Instagram post

Tottenham Hotspur begin the Champions League knockout stages later this evening as they welcome Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig to north London.

Jose Mourinho’s men are in fantastic form at the minute, going four unbeaten in the league, including three straight victories.

Ahead of the tonight’s fixture, Spurs midfielder Tanguy Ndombele posted a snap from their training preparations on Instagram, and he’s received glowing praise from fellow Frenchman and teammate Moussa Sissoko.

Sissoko has been sidelined since suffering an MCL tear to his right knee and will be out of action until at least April following surgery last month, but that hasn’t stopped him from encouraging his teammates ahead of their all-important knockout bow.

The 30-year-old has described his midfield compatriot as “le magicien” which is translated to mean ‘the magician’ – something that Spurs fans may not agree with going by their reaction to his last performance.

Where is he from?! Can you name which obscure countries these famous players have represented?

It remains to be seen if Ndombele will feature tonight, but this pre-match picture indeed suggests he will be involved in some form.

Spurs fans react to Jan Vertonghen latest

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is edging ever so closer to an exit this summer, and there’s a good chance he rejoins a former teammate if reports are to be believed.

According to Dan Kilpatrick at the Evening Standard, the Belgian centre-back is a potential free transfer target for Serie A side Inter Milan, should he not receive a contract extension.

His current deal is set to expire at the end of the season so the 32-year-old could reunite with Christian Eriksen who joined I Nerazzurri last month in a £17m move.

It has left fans discussing the possibility of Vertonghen ending an eight-year stay in north London.

Here’s what has been said…

There was a clear divide between fans, some were against the idea of the 6 foot 2 stalwart leaving while many were all for it.

“Best for all” was a claim from one member of the Spurs faithful as a further supporter suggested his wife was behind the move.

Vertonghen was also described as a “club legend” and as a “great servant.”

The potential for a reunion with Eriksen has also been on the minds of other fans…

One thought the Danish playmaker was behind the rumour while another cracked a joke at the ‘wife’ situation between the pair.

Further members of the Hotspur fanbase took a swipe at the Italian giants, claiming they were becoming a place for all the Premier League rejects.

West Ham fans slate Mark Noble

West Ham United secured a vital 3-1 against Southampton on Saturday, with the three points earned taking them out of the relegation zone.

The media team have looked to capitalise on this positivity, posting about some of the team’s men on the club’s official Twitter page.

This has backfired in the case of their post about Mark Noble, as it has led to fans slating the club captain.

One fan claimed that he is “an awful footballer”, while others said that he is “useless” and “needs to step up”.

Noble has struggled at times this season, as shown through his tackling statistics, as he averages 1.7 tackles per game as per WhoScored, but commits 1 foul and is dribbled past 1.5 times.

Did he really play for us?! No West Ham fan has managed to name all of these obscure Irons signings….

He may have recorded four goals and an assist, while maintaining a pass success rate of 82%, but this has not been enough to get fans on his side.

There are some who even feel the 32-year-old “should be dropped”, with one claiming that Robert Snodgrass should play centrally until Tomas Soucek returns from injury.

Noble is somebody the club have continuously relied on down the years, as he has made his 500th appearance for the club in December.

However, if David Moyes was to listen to the fans, the Hammers cult-hero wouldn’t be in the team with quite the same regularity.

Meanwhile, West Ham fans were drooling over one player’s performance against Southampton.
