Ramos and Zidane the perfect partnership to turn Manchester United around

Manchester United could look to Zinedine Zidane to replace Jose Mourinho in the Old Trafford dugout.

Mourinho has been under immense pressure following a poor start to the Premier League campaign. Things looked to be improving following a three-game win streak, but defeat against West Ham meant the Portuguese has guided the club to their worst start since the 1989/90 season. His time as manager could be running out.

Reports suggest that Zidane is the leading candidate to take the reins at the club. The Frenchman is without a club after leaving Real Madrid at the end of the season following three consecutive Champions League wins. He is viewed as the perfect replacement to help turn their fortunes around.

Should Zidane move to the Premier League, he should make an outrageous attempt to sign Real Madrid defender – Sergio Ramos. Valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, the Spaniard has been a mainstay in the Real Madrid side since joining from Sevilla back in 2005. The 32-year-old has made over 570 appearances during his trophy-laden spell with the Galacticos and could be tempted to try a new challenge with his former manager in England.

Ramos is undoubtedly one of the best centre-backs in world football, and his wealth of experience would help add some much-needed stability to the United back four. United wanted a new defender in the summer, and the World Cup winner could be the perfect addition to their squad.

Madrid wouldn’t want to lose their iconic defender but could definitely be tempted into a sale. The Spanish giants decided to sell Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer and could be willing to allow Ramos’ departure and search for a younger replacement.

If Zidane is appointed, he must try to bring Ramos to Old Trafford.

Replacing Steve Bruce with Sam Allardyce would be a terrible decision by Aston Villa

Aston Villa supporters have been pretty subdued in recent times after seeing their team’s testing run in the Championship continue on Tuesday night.

The Villans went into their meeting with bottom side Preston North End at Villa Park having won just one of their preceding eight league games, thus seeing them fall into the bottom half of the table prior to kick-off. Yet they looked on course for a fourth victory of the campaign when they raced into a 2-0 lead, only to somehow fall behind 3-2 heading into the final few minutes, with Yannick Bolasie sparing their blushes with an equaliser late on to secure the Midlands giants a point from an enthralling encounter.

Nonetheless, there have been many frustrated Villa fans up and down the country in recent times, although some are likely to be more upbeat following the news that manager Steve Bruce has been sacked by the club following their poor recent run of form.

And with Bruce gone, attentions are now turning towards who could be his successor at Villa Park, but the club’s board simply must not make what could prove to be a terrible decision in appointing Sam Allardyce as the new Villans boss.

The 63-year-old has been out of the game since losing his job at Premier League side Everton during the summer, where although he led them away from the bottom three to the safety of eighth place, he did so in a way which didn’t go down at all well with the supporters.

And having performed similar survival missions at Sunderland and Crystal Palace in recent years, there is no doubting Allardyce’s pedigree in that particular situation – yet that situation isn’t applicable to where Villa are at presently.

The Midlands heavyweights aren’t in relegation trouble in sitting just a few points off the top six, and while there is little doubting that Allardyce would make an immediate impact at Villa Park, as he has done in most of his other jobs, he is unlikely to win the fans over.

Clearly, one of the chief reasons why Bruce fell out favour among the Villa Park faithful, and subsequently lost his job, was because of the boring brand of football he played – for the players Villa have in certain areas of the pitch, the fans have every right to expect to be more entertained.

But it is likely to be even worse under Allardyce were he to succeed Bruce in the Villa Park dugout – the club needs someone progressive to take the club forward now, and the 63-year-old simply isn’t that man.

Ultimately, Bruce did a decent job at Villa in stabilising a club that were heading only one way when he took over back in the autumn of 2016, and if the circumstances were similar now, Allardyce would be a good choice.

But the Villans are in a much better place now after a couple of tricky years and transfer windows, but the players are there, the infrastructure is there, and the supporters are certainly there for the club to sustain a promotion push this season – it just needs someone to get the very best out of that squad of players.

And while Allardyce deserves credit for the career he has had in management, he simply isn’t the right man to replace Bruce at Villa Park.

Liverpool fans react to Bergwijn links

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool are one of a number of clubs interested in signing Steven Bergwijn, and fans are absolutely loving the links to the PSV wonderkid.

According to SPORT, Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona and AC Milan are all interested in PSV winger Bergwijn.

The youngster turned 21 this week, and has already scored four goals and added four assists in the Eredivisie this season.

The Reds of course signed Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, but they still have nowhere near the squad depth of the likes of Manchester City.

Add to that the fact that Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have gone off the boil in recent weeks, and it’s not surprising to see Klopp looking to boost his attacking options.

Bergwijn certainly wouldn’t displace any of Liverpool’s front three immediately, but the youngster has electric pace, can player on either wing and has already shown great end product for such a young winger.

Fans think he could be the perfect signing, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

West Ham eye swoop for Aston Villa defender Mitchell Clark

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa-owned defender Mitchell Clark is being monitored by West Ham ahead of a potential swoop, according to The Sunday Mirror (21/10, page 67).

What’s the word?

West Ham have struggled to find their feet under the guidance of Manuel Pellegrini despite splashing in excess of £100m in the summer and have suffered six defeats in their opening nine Premier League matches.

The poor form has left the Hammers in the hunt for further additions in 2019 and it appears Pellegrini is keen to bolster his defensive options as The Sunday Mirror (21/10, page 67) name West Ham amongst the clubs eyeing a move for Aston Villa defender Mitchell Clark.

Currently, on loan with League Two side Port Vale, Clark’s contract at Villa Park expires next summer and he is also said to be attracting the attention of another struggling Premier League side in the form of Newcastle.

A good addition?

The 19-year-old defender has excelled with Port Vale this season, making 12 league appearances in the third-division of English football and keeping four clean sheets in the process to help the Staffordshire side remain above the relegation spots.

With West Ham already having the likes of Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena in their squad, both of whom were signed in the summer, it seems as though Clark would be seen as one for the future, but his arrival would also suggest that Pellegrini has definitely decided that Declan Rice won’t again take up the centre-back role he often did under David Moyes last term.

Liverpool fans impressed by Chilwell’s display against Arsenal

Ben Chilwell has been a rumoured target of Liverpool, but any future deal is likely to cost the Reds a hefty sum as he recently signed a new contract at Leicester City.

The left-back is now tied down to the Foxes until 2024 unless another club offers a substantial figure that is too much to refuse.

This season, the 21-year-old has started all nine of Leicester’s Premier League matches and has completed a full 90 minutes in all of them.

On Monday night, Chilwell and his teammates went up against Arsenal at the Emirates and the youngster played a hand in the opening goal.

After the hosts lost possession in their own half, the left-back latched on before delivering a low ball across goal, which deflected off Hector Bellerin and into the back of the net.

Unfortunately for Leicester, though, they were unable to hold on to their lead as they were beaten 3-1.

Last week, The Mirror reported that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been a long-time admirer of Chilwell, who is believed to be on the list of candidates to replace Alberto Moreno at Anfield.

Liverpool’s first-choice left-back is Andrew Robertson and that does not look as though that will change any time soon, but judging from the reaction on Twitter, it seems that plenty of fans would love Chilwell to be part of the squad.

West Ham consider swoop for Benfica striker Nicolas Castillo

[ad_pod ]

According to Portuguese publication Record, who cite unnamed Mexican sources, Benfica’s Nicola Castillo has emerged as a January transfer target for Manuel Pellegrini at West Ham, who reportedly met with his countryman’s agents this week to discuss a move to London.

What’s the word?

The Hammers are floating just three points above the drop zone but are getting ready to bail out in January as holes start to show; an injury list including the likes of Andriy Yarmolenko and Manuel Lanzini has left the London Stadium outfit short of options in the midfield and attacking areas.

The performances of Michail Antonio and Javier Hernandez were poor as they were drafted in for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup loss to Spurs with many fans bemoaning both on social media for their lack of effort and many feel that, despite spending just shy of £100m in the summer, fresh faces are needed urgently in the new year.

Unnamed Mexican sources (via Record) link burly striker Castillo with a switch to the Irons, so what would the 25-year-old offer Pellegrini and his teammates?

Castillo in Claret and Blue

The number 30 left Liga MX outfit UNAM Pumas in July after having a solid season in Mexico in which he chalked up 17 goals and four assists in 30 games in all competitions.

Known for his ability in the air and his strength in hold-up play, the Santiago-born hitman’s physicality would be a nightmare for most defenders and his stats back up the fact that he is a clinical finisher, exactly what West Ham need as they seek to score only their 10th goal of the season.

Transfermarkt points out that the 5ft 10in forward was awarded ten cards in his 30 games last season, eight yellow and two red, indicating that his discipline could do with some work. However, after seeing the lethargic performances from the aforementioned Antonio and Hernandez the West Ham faithful would probably relish the thought of bringing in a player who would get stuck in.

At the very least the former Frosinone Calcio man would be a decent back-up option to Marko Arnautovic and depth is what the East London side need the most in January.

Liverpool fans buzzing about news of a fresh contract for Gomez

[ad_pod ]

Towards the end of last season many would have been concerned about Joe Gomez’s long-term future at Liverpool.

The 21-year-old had been booted out of the right-back role by Trent Alexander-Arnold, who came of age during the 2017-18 campaign.

Injuries also hampered his progress, and it was difficult to see where he would fit in this season.

However, manager Jurgen Klopp decided to use Gomez as centre-back cover during Dejan Lovren’s injury absence at the start of the season.

Since then the England international has made a strong case to be Virgil van Dijk’s permanent partner in the heart of defence.

Gomez has looked comfortable and solid in the role, and it seems as though the club have been mightily impressed.

According to The Mirror, the Merseyside outfit intend to offer the defender a new and improved contract with a significant wage increase as a reward for his performances.

Gomez – valued at £25.2m by Transfermarkt – is regarded as a mainstay for the future, and judging by the response to the news on Reddit, Liverpool fans are keen for the young star to commit.

Opinion: Birmingham must make January loan move for Liverpool youngster Adam Lewis

[ad_pod ]

Thanks to the EFL sanctions for breaking Financial Fair Play regulations, Birmingham City will only be able to make one signing when the January transfer window opens, and Garry Monk must use this to provide cover at left-back.

What’s the situation?

Birmingham were placed under a transfer embargo during the summer after it was revealed that the club had recorded a loss of approximately £46m in the period between 2015/16 and 2017/18, breaking the FFP rules for spending.

The Blues are now working with the EFL but are yet to find out their punishment, which The Times recently reported could be up to a 15-point deduction after they went ahead with the signing of left-back Kristian Pedersen despite the embargo.

On the pitch, Monk’s side have been impressive and currently sit in 10th place in the Championship table thanks to five wins, eight draws and only three losses from their first 16 games.

Summer-signing Pedersen though is the only recognised left-back in the squad, and Monk should target Liverpool youngster Adam Lewis to provide the perfect backup to the 24-year-old.

Perfect backup

Goal recently reported that Alberto Moreno would not be given a new contract at Anfield, meaning that he will be allowed to leave on a free-transfer in the summer of 2019. The Spaniard lost his place to Andrew Robertson last season and in truth has struggled since arriving from Sevilla in the summer of 2014.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”327140″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafa’s Pub Facts Leicester Trump Man City Chelsea & Liverpool”]

The report also claimed that Jurgen Klopp had been impressed by 18-year-old academy prospect Lewis, and that he would become the understudy to Robertson next season.

Lewis has played 11 games for Liverpool’s U23s so far this season, providing an impressive five assists from left-back, but although he looks to be a serious talent he has never experienced first-team football and so a loan to Birmingham to provide cover for Pedersen would be perfect at this stage in his career.

So, Blues fans, would you like to see the club move for Lewis on loan in January? Have your say by voting in the poll below.

Charlton must put themselves at the front of the queue for Will Keane in January

[ad_pod ]

Hull will listen to offers for their former Manchester United striker Will Keane in January, according to Hull Live, and Charlton should be at the front of the queue to secure a bargain deal with the 25-year-old out of contract next summer.

What’s the story?

Hull Live report that the Tigers will need to reduce their wage bill at the end of this year when the Premier League parachute payments cease to arrive at the KCOM Stadium, and the club will refuse to activate the option for a further year in Keane’s current contract.

The Englishman joined Hull from Manchester United for £1m in the summer of 2016, but after less than half a season he suffered a cruciate ligament injury that kept him out for well over a year.

Keane is now behind Fraizer Campbell, Chris Martin and Nouha Dicko in the pecking order for Nigel Adkins’ side, but he could certainly be a good signing for Charlton in January, especially if the Tigers are hoping to shift him on the cheap.

Striker solution

Charlton are currently sat in sixth position in League One and boss Lee Bowyer will have his sights set on the play-off places come the end of the season. This means he may have to convince the owners to spend at least something in the January transfer window.

Bowyer clearly prefers to play with two up front but he is yet to settle on a permanent partner for the impressive summer signing Lyle Taylor, who has nine league goals already this season.

Keane then would be an excellent signing for the Addicks as he is just coming into his prime, whereas Jamie Ward and Billy Clarke are both in their 30s and no youngster has stood out when given a chance.

So, Charlton fans, would you like to see a move for Keane in January? Have your say by voting in the poll below.
