Recent developments underline that Tottenham have missed a trick failing to land Wilfried Zaha

According to the club’s official website, Wilfried Zaha has signed a new long-term deal at Crystal Palace. The 25-year-old has been at the Premier League club since 2014 when he first joined on loan after struggling to break through at Manchester United, before making his move permanent there a year later, from which he has since gone from strength to strength to become one of the Premier League’s most influential attackers.

And Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham have reportedly been long-term admirers of the Ivory Coast international, but the North Londoners balked at the asking-price earlier this summer, a price that will now only rise following news that he has signed a new deal with the Eagles.

As such, there is little doubt that Spurs have missed a trick failing to land the wing wizard in recent times.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, there were occasions last season, most notably in the big matches, in which Pochettino’s side were crying out for someone like Zaha to produce a moment of brilliance in the final third of the pitch.

The most obvious example was their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester United at Wembley, whereby Spurs took the lead only to find themselves 2-1 down with half an hour to go, only to fail to really ask any testing questions of the Red Devils backline – they needed someone like Zaha to take the game to Jose Mourinho’s men.

Thus, while some Tottenham fans may have argued that the 25-year-old wouldn’t have commanded regular football at the North London club, there is no doubt that he would be an asset to have in the squad ahead of the new season, not least given Spurs will surely want to be competing for major honours both domestically and in Europe this time round.

And when one looks at just how influential he has been for Palace in the last few years, it further underlines that Tottenham have seriously missed a trick failing to get a deal done before the winger penned a new deal.

The 25-year-old netted seven goals and laid on 11 assists in the 2016/17 campaign to help keep Sam Allardyce’s side in the top-flight, before producing the goods again last term in bagging nine goals and laying on three assists to inspire Roy Hodgson’s men to safety – outside of the top six, there aren’t many better attackers in the league than Zaha.

And a new deal is only likely to add many more millions onto his price-tag ahead of the next few transfer windows, which is why, despite having been linked with the Ivorian for many a year now, Spurs have certainly missed a trick failing to get a deal done this summer, as it now looks extremely unlikely that they will be able to strike one in the coming years either.

Barcelona triggering Mina’s reported buy-back clause would be a step backwards for Everton

Everton manager Marco Silva would have walked away from the summer transfer window with a feeling of satisfaction.

The signing of Yerry Mina, in particular, is the addition that Silva is likely to be most pleased about.

The Toffees central defensive options were not the greatest and, since the arrival of the Portuguese boss, Funes Mori and Ashley Williams have departed Goodison Park to make way for Mina and Kurt Zouma.

But while Mina looks to be a good acquisition in this moment of time, in the long run, the perception of his signing could completely change.

The Breakdown

According to Marca, Mina has a £53.9m buy-back clause in his contract which Barcelona can activate in 2020.

And if the circumstances materialise for Barcelona to do so, it would be a huge blow to Everton which would also send the wrong message supporters.

In essence, Everton, who aspire to one day be a European powerhouse, would be developing a player as if they were a feeder club.

Zouma and Andre Gomes could also be set for short spells at Goodison Park but, with both Chelsea and Barcelona already stacked with central defenders and central midfielders, the pair are virtually surplus to requirements giving Everton a good chance of making their loan moves permanent.

On the other hand, the La Liga champions still appear to value £27m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Mina meaning should his time in Merseyside be a huge success, a return to the Nou Camp could be on the cards.

With that in mind, some questions may need to be asked about Everton’s long-term strategy.

That being said, the trio of Zouma, Gomes and Mina can at least offer the Toffees much in the present and potentially help the club bridge the gap between themselves and the Premier League top six.

Southampton fans unhappy Sims has left St Mary’s

Southampton announced on Monday that midfielder Josh Sims had joined Championship outfit Reading on loan for the 2018-19 campaign.

Sims came through the youth system at Southampton, and made seven appearances for the club in all competitions last term.

The 21-year-old had also been tipped to feature for the first team this season, but a loan move to Reading has been sanctioned before the end of August.

The Southampton fans have been reacting to the news on social media, and it would be fair to say that many are confused why the 5ft 9in ace has been allowed to leave.

The Saints will feel that a whole season playing regular football in the Championship will bring on Sims’ development.

But it seems that the majority of the club’s supporters feel that the Englishman is ready right now to be a first-team star for the Premier League outfit.

Leeds fans react to Ekuban exit

Loads of Leeds fans have been giving their verdict on the latest transfer update, as Caleb Ekuban has now officially joined Trabzonspor on loan.

Turkish side Trabzonspor announced the capture of Ekuban on Wednesday, and Leeds fans have got a lot to say about the young striker.

In a way, the 24 year-old sort of summed up everything that was wrong at Elland Road last season, a player who was signed from a poor league, and was quite simply out of his depth in the Championship.

According to The Yorkshire Evening Post, the Turkish side also have a “purchase option” if the striker impresses during his loan stay.

Though his work rate cannot be questioned, Ekuban scored just one Championship goal in 20 appearances last season, and the 24 year-old’s departure is perhaps a sign of things to come under the ruthless Marcelo Bielsa.

The new boss has a very specific style of play that he wants to implement, and clearing out the “dead wood” is just as important as signing new players.

Everton fans react to Zouma’s post-match tweet

Loads of Everton fans have been heaping praise on Kurt Zouma, and they’re praying Marcel Brands can make the towering Frenchman a permanent Toffee next summer.

Everton fans were delighted with the performance of Zouma on Saturday, and loads of fans have been responding to the summer signing’s post-match tweet.

The Toffees have been so close to an excellent start to the season, but a few small setbacks have taken the gloss off an otherwise perfect start.

The draw at Wolves could have easily been three points, and the red card for Richarlison at Bournemouth ruined what had been a perfect start for the young Brazilian.

The game against Huddersfield was a major disappointment though, as Marco Silva’s side simply failed to take the initiative when the game was there for the taking.

One man who certainly didn’t disappoint was Zouma, winning an impressive six aerial duels and completing 90 per cent of his passes.

Fans are have been showing the love for their Chelsea loanee after his post-match tweet, and you can find some of the best reactions down below, where some are calling for his move to be made permanent…

Manchester United fans react to Shaw injury

Loads of Manchester United fans have been having their say on England’s defeat to Spain, and they’re absolutely gutted about Luke Shaw’s injury.

[ad_pod ]

Jose Mourinho has drawn plenty of criticism over the last 18 months, but his much-maligned treatment of Shaw seems to have had the perfect effect.

The young left back has looked a completely different player this season, bombing down the wing to great effect and improving defensively all the time.

He picked up a very worrying injury on Saturday night though, appearing to be completely unconscious after a clash with Spain’s Dani Carvajal.

Shaw had already shown his improved form earlier in the match, slotting a wonderful assist in behind the defence for Marcus Rashford.

The Red Devils relied on Ashley Young in that position last year, and fans are now fearing the worst about entering a crucial stage of the season with the 33 year-old winger as their left back.

Sunderland fans react to draw against Fleetwood

Loads of Sunderland fans have been reacting to the draw against Fleetwood, and they’re furious with the Black Cats’ set piece troubles.

[ad_pod ]

Not for the first time this season, Sunderland had to fight from behind to stay undefeated on Saturday.

Jack Ross’ side have developed a nasty habit starting slowly, and Joey Barton’s Fleetwood took an early lead at the Stadium of Light on Saturday as Paddy Madden headed home from a corner.

The Black Cats equalised through the red-hot Josh Maja and were by far the better team in the second half, but Fleetwood held on for a 1-1 draw in front of a huge crowd.

Ross and the new owners have been a breathe of fresh air on Wearside, but they simply must stop going behind in games, and they absolutely need to sort out their set pieces.

Ross signed several defenders in the transfer market, and fans are fuming with the set piece defending and slow starts, as you can see from the Twitter reactions down below…

Liverpool failed to lend legend Gerrard a helping hand with this loan

After it was reported in The Evening Standard that Steven Gerrard’s Rangers missed out on signing Dominic Solanke, the Liverpool legend can feel let down by his former club.

The Reds ended up keeping hold of the former FIFA u-20 World Cup winner, but the 20-year-old is yet to feature under Jürgen Klopp this season.

Solanke would have fitted in well at Ibrox, as Gerrard will want a striker that he can trust throughout the season. He currently has Alfredo Morelos as his first choice striker, but the Colombian is just too inconsistent to make Rangers title challengers this term.

Solanke would push Morelos all the way, and would be guaranteed to be playing more regularly than he will be at Liverpool.

The current backup options to the Colombian are Kyle Lafferty and Eros Grezda, but Solanke would be more than capable of challenging these two for a starting berth alongside Morelos.

Liverpool have obviously chosen to keep hold of Solanke as they believe he is under the best tutelage possible with Jürgen Klopp, but Gerrard would also be a great manager to work under. Gerrard would obviously try and mould Solanke into the best player possible, not only for the sake of his Rangers team, but for the future of the Liverpool team that means so much to him.

Ultimately, Solanke has a season stuck behind the likes of Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge, Mo Salah and Sadio Mané, which almost seems like an impossible task to break into that team. Aldredo Morelos is a much easier target to usurp.

Aston Villa fans were handed positive news earlier today when the club announced Jack Grealish had signed a new five-year deal at Villa Park.

The new contract brings an end to consistent transfer speculation for the 23-year-old midfielder, who has struggled for form this season with a return of just one assist in his nine Championship appearances.

With his future now secure, Grealish will be looking to kick on in the weeks ahead to help improve a woeful run of form for Villa that has seen Steve Bruce’s side win just one of their last eight matches across all competitions – while they have also kept a clean sheet just once in the league.

While the news regarding Grealish’s contract was positive, many supporters on social media took the opportunity to urge the club to announce a departure for Bruce – with many adding that they believe the England U21 international would not be able to fulfil his potential unless a change in management follows swiftly.

Tottenham fans react as Vertonghen joins injury list

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham fans are fearing the worst for this week’s clash against Barcelona, after Jan Vertonghen became the latest star to join the growing injury list.

Spurs continued their comeback from that disappointing three-game slump on Saturday as they picked up a comfortable 2-0 win at Huddersfield.

The North Londoners were completely in control against Brighton last weekend and the game followed a similar pattern at Huddersfield, as Harry Kane’s early double was enough to grab all three points.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”301458″ player=”12034″ title=”The Problem With Paul Pogba”]

The Englishman nodded home from a wonderful Kieran Trippier cross after just 25 minutes, and he doubled the lead nine minutes later from the penalty spot.

Vertonghen was withdrawn at half time as he struggled with a suspected hamstring problem though, and Pochettino’s squad is practically down to barebones already.

Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Hugo Lloris all missed the trip to the John Smith’s Stadium, and the prospect of facing Barcelona without four first team players is very worrying.

There is no update on the extent of the Belgian’s injury yet, but you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…
