Spurs line up move for amazing Dragusin upgrade who’s played for England

When it rains, it pours, and that was certainly the case for Tottenham Hotspur last week.

Ange Postecoglou’s side threw away a one-goal lead to lose the North London derby 2-1, and then instead of bouncing back against relegation-threatened Everton, they ended up losing 3-2.

The Lilywhites’ first-half showing was nothing short of shambolic, and while there were poor performers across the entire team, it was another abject display from Radu Dragusin at the back that stood out.

Radu Dragusin for Tottenham

So, recent reports linking the club to a league-winning upgrade this month should be no surprise.

Tottenham target proven winner

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Tottenham are in the market for new defenders this month to help the manager cope with injuries in the squad, and one of the players who have caught their attention is AC Milan star Fikayo Tomori.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report has revealed that the North Londoners view the Englishman as a market opportunity and one of several options they are considering to bolster their backline.

A potential price tag for the former Chelsea ace is not mentioned in the report, but stories from earlier this month revealed that an offer in excess of £25m could be enough to tempt the Rossoneri into selling.

AC Milan's FikayoTomoriand Slovan Bratislava's Idjessi Metoko react

It might not be a straightforward transfer to get over the line, but given Tomori’s ability and experience, it’s one worth fighting for, especially as he could finally send Dragusin packing.

How Tomori compares to Dragusin

So, if Spurs were to get their man and bring Tomori to the club this month, he’d likely come in and compete with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero for a place in the starting lineup, which in turn would see him totally surpass Dragusin as, at worst, Postecoglou’s third choice.

AC Milan's Christian Pulisic celebrates scoring their first goal with Samuel Chukwueze and FikayoTomori

With that said, how does the Serie A winning centre-back stack up against the Lilywhites’ number six?

Well, given their position, the best way to compare them is by looking under the hood at their underlying numbers, and when we do this, we can see just how one-sided this comparison is in favour of the Milan ace.

For example, the “outstanding” international, as dubbed by former Chelsea ace Joe Cole, comes out ahead in almost every metric, including, but not limited to, progressive passes and carries, passing accuracy, key passes, passes into the penalty area, shot and goal-creating actions, tackles, tackles won, tackles plus interceptions, ball recoveries and more, all per 90.

On top of that, the Calgary-born titan has been an essential part of a winning team, making 40 appearances in Milan’s Scudetto winning campaign in 2021/22 and then beating Juventus and Inter Milan to lift the Italian Super Cup this season.

Ultimately, while Dragusin might be a better player than his performances suggest this season, Tomori looks to be the far superior defender from pretty much whatever angle you take.

Therefore, while it could prove challenging, the Spurs must do what they can to bring the Englishman back to the Premier League this month.

Lizelle Lee retired over fears of being dropped, denied NOC for overseas leagues because of poor fitness

Lee accused CSA of failing to offer her any resources to help her lose weight, which the board has denied

The issue came to a head when Lee was required to complete a fitness test before the squad left South Africa•Getty Images

Lizelle Lee has admitted that she did not meet CSA’s fitness requirements, and that is what led to her abrupt retirement from international cricket. In an interview with the BBC’s Stumped podcast, Lee revealed that after she failed to complete aspects of the fitness test, she was on the verge of being withdrawn from South Africa’s current tour of England, and the no-objection certificate to play in overseas leagues would have been denied. She chose to retire from the national side instead, which meant she would no longer need NOCs to play for T20 franchises. The issue came to a head when Lee was required to complete a fitness test before the squad left South Africa. She asked to do it in her parents’ hometown of Ermelo in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa instead of at her provincial base, North-West, or at CSA’s headquarters in Johannesburg because of the cost of travel. Lee weighed herself and sent the results to the team’s fitness trainer, who told her she had to also have her skinfold measured. Lee visited a biokineticist in Ermelo for that test later in the day, but did not weigh herself again because “it fluctuates and it’s small margins”, she said on the podcast. “I’m not going to do it again because if it’s over [the limit] I won’t be eligible for the England tour.” She told the biokineticist she had recorded her weight herself. She was subsequently selected for the tour and retested on arrival in England in early July, where, according to Lee, her “skinfolds were down but the weight wasn’t even close to where I thought it’d be”.CSA asked Lee for an explanation and established that Lee’s weight had not been verified by the biokineticist. In an email to CSA staff on July 5, Lee said she knew that she should have tested her weight again but didn’t, “because I was afraid that it might differ from the morning which might result in me not being selected” and conceded she “that was wrong and that I should have done it there”.The following day – July 6 – Lee was informed via email that she would be withdrawn from the squad. In communication between CSA and Lee, seen by ESPNcricinfo, CSA also said it would exercise its right to withhold an NOC for participation in leagues until she “met and maintained workload and fitness requirements”. CSA has since confirmed it was confident Lee could use the six to eight weeks away from the national squad in June and July ahead of The Hundred to meet the requirements if she returned home. They were also worried about her form and hoped she could work while at home on that too. Prior to the tour, Lee had played seven ODIs in 2022 and scored 81 runs at an average of 11.57, including five single-figure knocks.Related

Lee, however, was concerned that she would not get an NOC in time for The Hundred, which would have considerable financial implications, especially as she had just become a parent. “It was a lot of money,” she said. “We needed it. We’re a young family. So I just said I was going to retire.”Through CSA, she initially issued a statement saying she was ready to focus on the next phase of her career but, days later, tweeted that national coach Hilton Moreeng was aware of CSA’s intention to deny her the NOC. That was in response to Moreeng telling a press conference he had no knowledge of the Lee situation.Lee accused CSA of failing to offer her any resources to help her lose weight. “I never got any support from CSA with that,” she said. “They never asked me ‘what do you need, what can we do to help you lose weight’. That’s something that I have had to do on my own.” CSA has denied that assertion.Lee recognised that CSA was “in their rights to do that [withhold the NOC] and that’s 100% fine”, but criticised their fitness requirements. She said that bracketing an athlete’s ability to run along with their skin folds and weight is not a true measure of cricketing ability and would prefer that the cardiovascular and body composition components be separated.”I understand the running, if you don’t make the running, they don’t see you as fit enough to play which I think is probably fine,” she said. “The big thing that just got me is that I made fitness physically, I did the running that I had to do. Basically, I’m fit to play, and I had this conversation with them before Ireland because I got dropped in Ireland because of my weight as well, and I told them ‘you’re dropping me because of the way I look and how much I weigh’ and they said ‘no, we’re dropping you because you failed the fitness battery’.In seven ODIs this year, Lizelle Lee had scored 81 runs, with a best of 36•ICC via Getty Images

“I said ‘yes, but if you break the fitness battery down, what did I not make? I made the fitness, the running, but not the weight. So you’re dropping me because of weight’. So as a woman that breaks me.”Lee’s gender is the reason CSA did not make these details public, with several officials citing an understanding of the sensitivity of body-image issues facing women as a reason to keep the matter private. In early 2020, CSA held a conditioning camp for Tabraiz Shamsi, Lungi Ngidi, JJ Smuts and Sisanda Magala targeted at, among other things, their weight. At the end of the camp, all four players took fitness tests and Magala was the only one who did not pass. He was subsequently left out of an ODI squad to play England and his challenges have been well documented. Magala, despite being the leading wicket-taker in the domestic one-day cup in the 2021-22 season, will continue to be unavailable for national selection until he meets the fitness requirements.Lee asked for a complete relook at the process of fitness tests, especially for women. “We have to make sure, especially with women, the things that really count have to count more – like running and skills, all of those things that actually contribute towards winning instead of how people look.”

West Ham could move for "sensational" £30m Premier League player this month

West Ham United could make a move for a “sensational” Premier League player this month, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Graham Potter off to a solid start

West Ham were made to work hard for their opening victory under Graham Potter, but they just about got over the line, edging Fulham 3-2 in a closely-contested match at the London Stadium.

With Potter’s first three points in the bag, the new manager can now start looking at making a push for the top half of the Premier League table, but he may be keen to aid his side’s chances by bringing in some new reinforcements this month.

Given that Niclas Füllkrug is set to be sidelined for several months due to a hamstring injury, bringing in a new striker may become a priority for Potter, and there are a few options being considered.

The Hammers are now in talks with Nottingham Forest over a deal for Taiwo Awoniyi, who could set them back as much as £20m, while they have also tabled a bid to sign Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran.

Not only are the Irons looking to bring in a new striker, but they are also keen on a new attacking midfielder, and Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has now confirmed they could make a move for Chelsea’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Dewsbury-Hall

Dewsbury-Hall is yet to start a Premier League game for the Blues this season, failing to justify his £30m price tag since arriving from Leicester City back in the summer.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is not ruling out letting the attacking midfielder leave during the January transfer window, so it seems like a deal could be there to be done, should West Ham make a concrete approach.

Dewsbury-Hall was "sensational" for Leicester

Although the Englishman has failed to make an impact at Stamford Bridge, there are clear signs he could be a solid signing for the Hammers, given his previous exploits in the Premier League.

Brendan Rodgers praised the 26-year-old during his time with the Foxes, while also providing an overview of the type of player he is: “Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has been sensational really since he has come into the team, and there’s so much more to go as well. He can add goals to his game. But his energy, his physicality, his concentration – he is playing at a really high level.

“It’s the type of player I love: a technical player, he’s got agility, he’s got a good tactical idea of the game, who doesn’t see it as a chore to run and work, he sees that as the obligation.”

The former Leicester man was also impressive in the Championship last season, scoring a brace to help his side overcome rivals Coventry City en-route to promotion.

As such, it is exciting news that West Ham could make a move for Dewsbury-Hall this month, and the player himself may well be keen on the move, given that his game time has been so limited this season.

Michael Hussey and David Saker have been added to England men’s coaching set-up for the T20 World Cup in Australia next month.Hussey, the former Australia international who currently works as batting coach for Chennai Super Kings, and fellow Australian Saker, who was England’s Test bowling coach from 2010 to 2015, have been enlisted by Matthew Mott, England’s white-ball head coach, to add home-grown insight to the squad’s preparations ahead of the tournament in Australia, which gets underway from October 16.Saker, the former Victoria fast bowler who was a key factor in England’s triumphant Ashes tour of 2010-11, will link up with the squad in Pakistan ahead of the seven-match T20I series that begins in Karachi next week. Hussey, meanwhile, will join the squad when it arrives in Australia in October, when England are scheduled to play three T20Is against the host nation before their opening World Cup fixture against Afghanistan on October 22.The pair will augment the existing coaching structure, with Mott currently working alongside two assistants in Carl Hopkinson and Richard Dawson. The Pakistan leg of the tour – England’s first in the country since 2005 – will be captained by Jos Buttler, although Moeen Ali is expected to lead the side for the opening fixtures in Karachi while Buttler recovers from a calf injury.England are also reportedly close to appointing a new national selector, following the decision to dispense with the formal role that Ed Smith held until April 2021. According to The Telegraph, Nick Knight and Steven Finn are among the leading contenders for the position, with Steve Harmison also believed to have shown an interest in applying.

European media say Rangers have tabled transfer bid directly to 6’4 player

Rangers are reportedly said to be interested in bringing a former player back to Ibrox in the January transfer window, as they make an offer directly to the defender.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers still have time to complete some late business during the current window, with Nottingham Forest striker Emmanuel Dennis linked with a move to Ibrox. He has found playing time impossible to come by this season, so a move away could appeal to him, also giving Philippe Clement additional firepower.

Highly-rated Motherwell midfielder Lennon Miller has been a rumoured transfer target for Rangers for some time, with reports continuing to back him to move to the club before the end of the month. Just 18 years of age, he has registered six assists in 19 Scottish Premiership starts this season.

A reunion with former winger Ryan Kent has also been mooted for the Gers, having scored 33 goals and registered 56 assists in 218 appearances for the club during his first stint there, also winning the Scottish Premiership title.

In terms of potential exits at Rangers in the coming days, left-back Ridvan Yilmaz has been linked with a move to Besiktas, having played for the club earlier in his career. Interestingly, Celtic’s Greg Taylor is considered an alternative option for the Turkish giants.

Rangers make offer to former defender

According to a new update from Swiss outlet Watson (via Glasgow Times), Rangers have made an offer to former defender Nikola Katic, looking to bring him back to the club after he left in 2022, but it is not clear if there have been any formal negotiations with his current club Zürich.

The 28-year-old was signed by Steven Gerrard in 2018 but suffered an injury-hit spell at Ibrox, never quite being able to consistently show his best form.

Nikola Katic

Katic could be a strong addition for Rangers before the window is closed, considering the Zürich defender is still at an age where he can be at his peak for several more years. The former Gers man has won six caps for Bosnia, as well as representing Croatia once before changing his allegiances, while Gerrard hailed his long-term potential when he managed him during their time together.

Katic himself is thought to be both keen on a move away from Zürich and interested in making a return to Rangers, and the fact that he would improve Clement’s defensive options means it is a transfer that could make sense for all parties.

Rangers have struck gold on Ibrox gem who's worth more than Lyall Cameron

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 28, 2025

The centre-back may even feel that he has unfinished business at Ibrox, given his injury-prone nature and the fact that he was limited to only 59 appearances – he scored six goals in that time – so the hope is that the Gers’ offer is accepted.

Rodgers personally driving Celtic move to sign "crazy" Kyogo replacement

Following the departure of Kyogo Furuhashi in the January transfer window, Brendan Rodgers is now reportedly driving Celtic’s summer move to sign a replacement for the forward in the summer.

Celtic transfer news

The Bhoys may have been forced to bid farewell to Kyogo last month, but they certainly earned a reward for their sacrifice – welcoming star forward Jota back to the club less than two years after he swapped Scotland for the Saudi Pro League. With plenty of making up to do, it’s fair to say that he got off to the perfect start by scoring on his second debut in a recent 3-1 victory over Motherwell.

Those at Celtic Park may not stop there with attacking improvements though, as they look to replace the goals of Kyogo when the summer transfer window arrives.

Following a relatively quiet transfer window which saw just Jota and Jeffrey Schlupp arrive on loan from Crystal Palace, the Scottish giants may yet aim to steal the headlines ahead of the next campaign.

Jeffrey Schlupp

According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Rodgers is now personally driving Celtic’s move to sign Mathias Kvistgaarden in the summer transfer window having been left unhappy by the club’s failure to replace Kyogo in January.

A long-term target, Celtic could finally get their man when the summer arrives in what would end their search for his signature at last. The 22-year-old has certainly got the credentials to replace Kyogo, with an impressive goalscoring record speaking for itself.

Celtic fans will be excited to see him in action.

BySean Markus Clifford Feb 8, 2025

Seemingly destined for Scotland following such continuous links, Kvistgaarden could now take that record to a bigger stage and one he could share with Jota to form quite the partnership.

"Crazy" Kvistgaarden can replace Kyogo

Whilst replacing Kyogo will be no easy task, 10 goals in 15 games so far this season suggests that Kvistgaarden is the man that Celtic should be chasing to do exactly that this summer. With such a record, the young Dane has found himself at the centre of praise from football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who described his form as “crazy” last season.

Of course, as already mentioned that “crazy form” has only continued in the current campaign and doesn’t look destined to come to an end anytime soon – whether that be at Brondby or, indeed, Celtic next season.

Given that Kyogo is already 30 years old – eight years the senior of Kvistgaarden – welcoming a younger replacement is far from a bad idea, either. In the space of two moves, Celtic could have both Jota and a rising star in the Danish forward to spearhead Rodgers towards another Scottish Premiership title next season.
