Azeem Rafiq: Joe Root's comments about not seeing racism at Yorkshire were 'hurtful'

Rafiq claims relationship with Gary Ballance was ‘toxic’ during moving testimony

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Nov-2021Azeem Rafiq has told a parliamentary inquiry he found Joe Root’s assertion that he never witnessed racism at Yorkshire as “hurtful”.Giving evidence to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Select Committee hearing on Yorkshire’s investigation into Rafiq’s claims of institutional racism at the club, Rafiq was at pains to state that Root, the England Test captain, had never used racist language himself. But Rafiq said he found Root’s comments “strange” and an indication of how “normal” the use of such language was at the club.Root, a Yorkshire player since 2009, issued a statement last week calling for “change and actions” at the club to ensure “a culture that harnesses a diverse environment with trust across all communities”. Asked if he had seen any incidents of racism at the club, Root said: “Not that I can recall, no I can’t. But it is clear things have happened at the club and we have to make sure we eradicate it.”His comments followed an admission from Gary Ballance, the Yorkshire batter and Root’s former housemate, that he had used the slur “P**i”, which was deemed as “banter” in the club’s report into Rafiq’s claims.”To be clear, Root is a good man,” Rafiq told the hearing on Tuesday. “He’s never engaged in racist language. I found [his statement] hurtful, because Rooty was not only Gary’s housemate but, before he started playing for England, he was involved in a lot of those socialising nights out where I’d been called a P**i.”He might not remember it, but it just shows how normal it was in that environment, in that institution, that even a good man like him doesn’t see it for what it is. It was strange, but it’s the environment and the institution that made it such a norm that people don’t remember it. And it’s not going to affect Joe. It’s something I remember every day. But I don’t expect Joe to.”Addressing the DCMS committee, Rafiq doubled down on his criticism of Ballance, who had addressed the initial allegations by speaking of a deep and lasting friendship between the pair. This characterisation was inaccurate, Rafiq said, adding their relationship went downhill in 2013 and had become “toxic” by the time Ballance was named club captain in 2017.Asked by Julian Knight MP, the committee chair, about references to the word “Kevin” in the Yorkshire report, Rafiq explained that this was a derogatory word used by Ballance to describe non-white team-mates. “It was an open secret in the England dressing room,” he said. “Anyone who came across Gary would know that was a phrase he would use to describe people of colour.”Rafiq also alleged that Alex Hales, the former England batter, had been one of those players to pick up on the word, and even went so far as to name his dog ‘Kevin’ because it was black. “It’s disgusting how much of a joke it was,” Rafiq added.Related

Yorkshire come to grief over Azeem Rafiq affair, but acceptance is a way off yet

Rafiq told Tuesday’s hearing that it was important for the inquiry not to focus on individuals, including the former Yorkshire and England captain, Michael Vaughan, who revealed in his column for that his name appeared in the report, where Rafiq alleged he had noted the inclusion of four players of Asian heritage in the Yorkshire side and said: “There are too many of you lot; we need to do something about it.”Vaughan denies those allegations, even though Rafiq’s recollections have since been corroborated by two of the Asian players who were present in the team, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Adil Rashid.”I think it’s important on Michael [Vaughan] that we don’t make it all about Michael,” Rafiq said. “It was a long time ago, Michael might not remember it as I said about earlier because it doesn’t mean anything. But three of us remember it.”He used his platform at the Daily Telegraph to tell everyone that he hadn’t said these things but then to go and put a snippet of my statement out and then talk about other things, I thought was completely wrong.”Azeem Rafiq gave a moving account of his experiences of racism to a parliamentary inquiry•Charlie Crowhurst/Getty Images

During his testimony, Rafiq revealed that as a 15-year-old playing for his local cricket club, he was pinned down in a car and had wine poured down his throat by another player.”The first instance of drinking, I actually got pinned down at my local cricket club and red wine got poured down my throat,” Rafiq said. “The player played for Yorkshire, played for Hampshire.”I didn’t touch alcohol until about 2012 and around that time I felt like I had to do that to fit in. I regret that, but it has no bearing on the things that I was called.”Rafiq also gave a moving account of the toll his experiences of racism, and subsequently speaking out about it had on him and his family, including his wife.”Do I believe I lost my career to racism? Yes I do,” Rafiq said. “Hopefully in five years time we’re gong to see a big change and I can look back at it that I did something that is far bigger than any runs I got or any wickets I got. But it’s horrible, it hurts.””We’ve got two young kids and they’ve not had a dad really because all I’ve been worried about is Yorkshire going out to discredit me and how I’m going to deal with it. Dealing with lawyers, dealing with press. [It’s been] challenging but I just hope today provides some sort of closure and I can treat her for what she deserves.”

Mominul wants to set 'small goals' for Bangladesh in 2022 and not look far ahead

Starting with the New Zealand tour, Bangladesh would want to improve their record of 2021, in which they lost five of their seven Tests

Bangladesh will look to forget 2021, in which they lost five of their seven Tests, and set shorter goals for a better 2022. Their first task in hand, on the first day of the new year, will be to tackle the rampant home side New Zealand. Test captain Mominul Haque said that he will continue to have a positive outlook for his side, despite their torrid experience in the last 12 months.”For now, we are not thinking about what happens in 2022,” Mominul said on the eve of the first Test in Mount Maunganui. “I am more focused on the current series, how we can do well, and win. It is hard to set goals in this way. We will play in tough conditions – South Africa, West Indies and Sri Lanka. We want to set small goals, rather than thinking too far ahead.”I am excited about starting well in the new year, rather than thinking about what happened in the past. Starting well gives more chance of doing well in subsequent challenges. I know we haven’t done well in New Zealand, but it is best to be optimistic if we want to do well in the present.”If I am captain at this time next year, even if the team is at the tenth position, I will say the same thing (that we will have a good 2023). I will always think positively regardless of our situation. I want to take Bangladesh to a better position this year. We want to learn from the mistakes, and we are thinking about doing well.”Mominul said that despite Bangladesh’s poor Test record in New Zealand, he hopes for a better result this time. He is pinning those hopes on a combined team effort as he firmly believes that individual success won’t bring them wins.”We usually win when we play well as a team, regardless of where we are playing,” Mominul said. “If we don’t combine, I don’t think we can get a good result. I think even if someone scores a hundred or a double-hundred, we need bowlers to take the 20 wickets. Everyone has to chip in, for us to do well.”One of the areas in which Bangladesh seem to have improved is their fast bowling stocks. Compared to the 2016 to 2020 period, when at times they didn’t even pick a fast bowler in a home Test, the likes of Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam have given the side a bit more teeth in the attack.”Taskin, Ebadot [Hossain], Rahi (Abu Jayed) and Shoriful have done well recently,” Mominul said. “We also have Khaled [Ahmed] and Shohidul [Islam]. So we have a number of pace bowlers in our midst. I am excited to see them do well, especially how they have improved over the last 12 months.”But there remain a few areas of worry, particularly the top-order positions where they have seen the likes of Shadman Islam, Saif Hassan, Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mahmudul Hasan Joy struggle against Pakistan. Saif hasn’t traveled to New Zealand, but the other three are likely to feature at the Bay Oval from Saturday. Coach Russell Domingo said these batters have had to learn about the conditions in New Zealand, particularly dealing with the bounce.”Couple of the guys in our top-order hasn’t played in New Zealand before,” he said. “The ten days practice and warm-up games have been beneficial to accustom to the bounce. It has been excellent learning for the coaching staff to see some of the younger guys, and where they need to improve on. The two-day game was beneficial for the players too.”Bangladesh’s catching has also been a cause for concern in 2021. Even during their previous New Zealand tour couple of years ago, Bangladesh’s catching had let them down. Mominul said they were working hard on various aspects of catching, and he expects improvement.”We have to adjust to the crosswinds in New Zealand grounds. We are working hard on the technical and tactical sides of fielding. We don’t have to mention it but we must work on slip catching and those who will do bat-pad, inner circle and in the outfield. I can go ahead with the process, but we have to wait for the result. I am hopeful we will field well.”

Nottingham Forest move for £80k-p/w ace in January, they’ve had a response

Nottingham Forest have launched a move to try and sign a new striker in January, it has emerged, and they have already had a response.

Nottingham Forest still pursuing a striker

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side have enjoyed an excellent start to the 24/25 Premier League campaign, even with a defeat to Newcastle United in their most recent outing leaving them fifth in the Premier League at the quarter stage, after they had been as high as third.

Behind Arsenal and Chelsea only on goal difference, the Garibaldi have been spearheaded by the form of New Zealand striker Chris Wood, who has found the net a mammoth eight times and has the best conversion rate of any striker in the Premier League since Nuno arrived.

Now well beyond a traditional purple patch, the 32-year-old has emerged as one of the top flight’s most lethal marksmen, and accounts for over 50% of Forest’s goals this season so far.

However, they remain keen to sign an alternative striker to provide cover and competition for the ex-Newcastle man, with the reliable John Percy explaining: “I think a striker has got to be the priority.”

“They obviously looked in the summer and sort of rained back a bit and thought, let’s just wait, which we’ve all said at the time was another sign of the evolution of the club and maturity. But I think that’s going to be the number one priority.”

Now, they appear to be trying to land one ahead of the January transfer window.

Nottingham Forest try audacious swoop for teenage star

That comes as reports in Germany [Via Sport Witness] claim that Nottingham Forest have approached Bayern Munich over a potential deal to sign Mathys Tel.

The teenager has seen his gametime limited at the Allianz Arena, racking up just 224 minutes under new boss Vincent Kompany despite his evident potential, with Football analyst Ben Mattinson describing him as an “Elite level goal-scorer” on X, before adding that he is a “2-footed ball-striking machine” who is also a “clinical finisher” with “top movement”.

ByBrett Worthington Nov 13, 2024

And after reports that he could be available on loan in January, it appears that Forest wanted to test the waters over a potential mid-season switch. It is claimed that they offered to take the Frenchman on loan, but that Tel himself “rejected” the move to the City Ground, explaining that “he wants to join a top club” if he leaves Bayern this winter.

Tel himself is in no rush to leave, with the France U21 international still having almost five years left to run on his £80,000 a week deal in Bavaria, and keen to remain at the Allianz Stadium to eventually replace Harry Kane.

Though he is undoubtedly a quality striker, he would be a major change from Chris Wood and other physical strikers that Forest have chased in recent transfer windows, which could have had a knock on effect on their results across the remainder of the season. Perhaps, then, missing out on the teenager is for the best.

Michael Vaughan stood down from BT Sport Ashes coverage after Azeem Rafiq allegations

Channel to adopt a “hybrid” approach with Vaughan’s stints on Fox Sports to be overlaid

Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, will not be heard by UK audiences during this winter’s Ashes in Australia, after BT Sport followed the BBC’s decision to remove him from their TV coverage of the series.Vaughan, 47, was last week stood down from BBC Test Match Special’s coverage for “editorial” reasons, following allegations from Azeem Rafiq, the former Yorkshire cricketer, that he had said “there are too many of you lot” following the selection of four players of Asian heritage in a county fixture in 2009.Vaughan, who denies the allegations, apologised last week in an interview on BBC Breakfast for the “hurt” caused to Rafiq during his time as a player at Yorkshire, and will still be involved in this winter’s Ashes coverage through his commentary role with Fox Sports, the Australian host broadcaster. However, BT Sport – who are due to take the Fox Sports feed after choosing not to send a bespoke commentary team to Australia – announced on Tuesday that they will be taking a “hybrid” approach to their coverage, with Vaughan’s on-air stints to be overlaid with studio analysis.”As a result of Covid and travel restrictions BT Sport had made the decision to take our commentary feed from the Australian host broadcaster,” the channel said in a statement. “The recent report presented to UK Parliament uncovering institutional racism within cricket and specifically Yorkshire County Cricket Club is extremely disappointing and a concern for all.”Given these recent events and the controversy with the situation we have taken the decision that including Michael Vaughan within our Ashes coverage would not be editorially appropriate or fit with BT Sport’s values. We are still finalising plans but we are assessing the option of taking a hybrid approach, using Fox commentary where possible with the aim of putting our own commentary team in place if necessary.”Vaughan’s troubled build-up to the series continued on Tuesday, when he announced on Twitter that his arrival in Australia had been delayed by a week due to a positive Covid test. “[It] is frustrating,” he wrote. “But at least I’ll avoid the rain in Brisbane for a few days!”However, his hopes of being retained by the BBC after the Ashes have received a boost, after the corporation confirmed that they had been in “regular contact” with Vaughan since his suspension, and had held “positive conversations with him in recent days”.”Our contributors are required to talk about relevant issues, so Michael’s involvement in a story of such significance means it’s not possible for him to be part of our Ashes coverage or wider cricket coverage at the moment,” the statement added. “We’re pleased with how our conversations are going and expect to work with Michael again in the future. He remains on contract to the BBC.”The BBC’s stance was criticised this week by his former England team-mate Monty Panesar, who wrote in a column in the Daily Telegraph: “This feels deeply unethical — a classic case of someone being tried and convicted without any form of due process being undertaken.”

Conte and Napoli planning January bid for "extraordinary" Arsenal player

Serie A giants Napoli and Antonio Conte are now planning a January bid for an “extraordinary” Arsenal player, who could well be tempted by a mid-season move.

Players linked with January exits from Arsenal

It has been a difficult start to the season for Mikel Arteta, who was tipped to guide the Gunners to their first Premier League title in 21 years.

Last week, Arsenal lost influential sporting director Edu Gaspar, who will no longer play a pivotal role in growing Arsenal as a club after announcing his departure. This comes amid their troubles on the field, with Arsenal failing to win a single league game since their 3-1 victory over Southampton in early October.

The north Londoners are now nine points behind league leaders Liverpool as their chase for a first domestic crown in decades looks to be unravelling already, but despite this, there are still reports that Arteta could look to offload personnel in the winter.

Left-back Kieran Tierney is widely expected to depart Arsenal after falling out of favour under Arteta, with the Scotsman not playing for them since the club’s Community Shield win over Man City in 2023.

Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney.

Meanwhile, it is also believed that Arsenal have been contemplating the sale of Takehiro Tomiyasu in January. The £100,000-per-week Japan international has suffered from serious injury problems since pre-season, with Tomiyasu playing just six minutes all campaign due to a recurring knee issue.

“We don’t know that [how long he will be out for],” said Arteta on Tomiyasu last month.

“It doesn’t look like, hopefully, a long period, but we have to see when he comes back how he reacts to the load and to the impact on the pitch as well.

“But we really need him, he has been incredible, his work rate, the amount of hours he has put in to get back. He did it and he was in great shape – and now he has got something else again. But, we are all behind him. He needs our support, and hopefully he will be fine.”

As well as Tomiyasu and Tierney, there are suggestions that defender Jakub Kiwior is expected to depart N5 next year.

Napoli planning January bid to sign Jakub Kiwior from Arsenal

According to Italian news outlet TUTTOmercatoWEB, Napoli are thinking about making a loan bid for Kiwior in January as Conte’s side scour the market for new central defensive reinforcements.

They’re also admirers of Radu Dragusin from Tottenham, but Arsenal’s fringe defender could be far more attainable in their eyes due to the Poland international being further down Arteta’s pecking order.

The loan bid could include an option to buy or an obligation based on certain conditions, which would hand Kiwior the opportunity to make a permanent Serie A return in the summer, who has received high praise from international teammate Robert Lewandowski in the past.

“He has great potential,” said Lewandowski in 2022 when asked about Kiwior.

“During the warm-up of the game with the Netherlands, I thought: ‘Who is this guy?’ Then, during the match, I saw that he is extraordinary.”

Lukaku 2.0: Dyche must unleash "devastating" Everton star to save his job

Everton are once again finding themselves in a precarious situation for the third Premier League season in a row, with relegation a real threat given their recent form.

The Toffees have only picked up 11 points from their opening 12 outings this campaign, winning just two games in the process.

Last Saturday’s meeting with Brentford pretty much summed up the campaign they’re having under Sean Dyche, drawing 0-0 with Thomas Frank’s side at Goodison Park, despite the visitors playing with just ten men for over 45 minutes after Christian Norgaard’s first-half dismissal.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

His side were frustrated in attacking areas, unable to find the back of the net and capitalise on the advantage they were handed – ultimately a familiar story of their season to date.

They have struggled to replicate their end-of-season form from 2023/24 which saw them secure survival despite a combined eight-point deduction, with one area of the pitch undoubtedly contributing to their lowly league standing of 15th place.

Everton’s major issue so far in 2024/25

Goals have been hard to come by for Everton in recent seasons, as seen with their tally of just 41 goals in 38 matches during their near miss with relegation last year.

However, Dyche has been unable to transform their fortunes in the final third in recent months, with goals still hard to come by on Merseyside in the Premier League.

His side have only produced ten goals in 12 matches, with Dwight McNeil the top scorer to date, scoring just three goals – a signal as to how much the Toffees have struggled to create opportunities in attacking areas.

In the league this campaign, they have been presented with 16 big chances, with striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin missing seven of those on his own, restricting him to a measly tally of just two goals scored.

Dyche’s men have also only averaged four shots on target per 90 since August, the fourth worst of any side in England’s top-flight, which sees their lowly goal tally come as no surprise given the lack of chances directed on goal.

Such records will undoubtedly be a cause for concern to supporters, as they desperately hope to enter their first season at Bramley-Moore in the top division rather than the Championship.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

If there is to be a change in fortunes, the 53-year-old could turn to one member of his squad to try and push the club away from any looming relegation threat and maintain his status as manager, with rumours already swirling regarding possible replacements in the dugout.

The man who Dyche must unleash to save his job

Over the summer transfer window, the hierarchy invested money into the playing squad to try and combat their recent issues – most notably in forward positions.

Jesper Lindstrom and Iliman Ndiaye were just additions who arrived at Goodison, but despite the latter registering two goals, Everton’s situation up front still remains the same. In truth, they are missing a figure of the past like Romelu Lukaku, who powered home 87 goals in just 166 games for the club.

Everton's Iliman Ndiaye

As a result, Toffees boss Dyche could turn to fellow summer signing Armando Broja, who – like Lukaku before him – joined on an initial loan from Chelsea on deadline day.

The Albanian international is yet to feature after his temporary signing following a long-term ankle issue, but the 23-year-old has been spotted making his comeback in training over the last couple of weeks.

Broja, who’s previously been dubbed as “dangerous” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has proven he’s capable of supplying consistent goals in the Premier League, as seen during a previous loan spell with Southampton in 2021/22.

He managed to register six goals during the aforementioned year, in what was his first taste of top-level football in England, despite his breakthrough at Chelsea. That purple patch as saw the youngster described as “devastating” by Sergio Porrini, the assistant manager of Albania, at the time.

Whilst it’s to be expected that he will take time to settle into the squad on Merseyside after his recent injury struggles, the under-fire boss must unleash the striker over Calvert-Lewin upon his return to full fitness.

Expecting Broja to follow in the footsteps of that man Lukaku may be a tough ask, although as journalist Gab Marcotti previously stated, he “can do a lot of the things Lukaku can do”.

Time is ticking for the former Burnley manager at Goodison following another slow start, with Broja able to dig the 53-year-old out of trouble and get his own career back on track in the process.
