Nick Hockley interim Cricket Australia chief executive as Kevin Roberts departs

Hockley was chief executive of the Australia T20 World Cup organising committee

Daniel Brettig16-Jun-2020Kevin Roberts’ ignominious exit from Cricket Australia will see the T20 World Cup local organising chief, Nick Hockley, installed as acting chief executive while the governing body conducts a global search for the next long-term leader.Hockley, who has impressed many with his handling of the women’s event capped by a crowd of more than 86,000 people at the MCG for Australia’s win over India in the March 8 final, was first involved in cricket as part of the organising team for the ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, before holding a senior commercial role with CA from 2015 to 2017.Support for Roberts at CA board level had been conditional right from the start of his tenure, given that he was signed to a three-year contract with the option of two more in October 2018, meaning he had the chance to prove himself before major negotiations for broadcast rights and the MoU with the players fell due. Initially he seemed to have worked effectively if slowly through a period that saw the men’s team rehabilitated after the Newlands scandal and the women’s team reach new heights in winning dual Twenty20 World Cups. However, the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and CA’s chosen response – staff stand downs on 80% pay cuts and requests for funding cuts across the country – re-opened old questions about Robert’s communication style and level of trust with players, state associations and the governing body’s own staff. This saga confirmed whatever reservations the board still had about his ability to be CA’s long-term chief, turning it into a matter of when to part ways. Deteriorating talks with players and states, plus a rapidly improving Covid-19 outlook, brought the matter to head over the weekend, leaving Roberts to discuss his future with the board on Monday and eventually tender his resignation.Earl Eddings, the CA chairman, spoke to staff before addressing the media on Tuesday with the board due to confirm details of a restructure that will include redundancies later in the week. “Kevin and the board and I have been working hand-in-glove over the last three to four months around this. We thought it’s time now and Kevin agreed with the board that it’s time for a new leadership and he tendered his resignation accordingly for the good of the game,” Eddings said.”Ultimately the board takes all responsibilities. Being the chair, I’m the one ultimately responsible for the organisation. Hence why we’ve made these changes today and what we are doing tomorrow. We have responded appropriately. We are living in very unprecedented times. Our response has been in line with all other sporting organisations in the past three months. It would be naïve to think that Australian cricket wouldn’t be affected like all our other sporting codes and organisations around the world.”At the time, we made prudent decisions about the welfare of Australian cricket and, yes, that means we had to make some hard decisions and we’ve done that. And I don’t move away from that because it’s been necessary to protect us through this crisis. However, if things emerge and change, we adapt our plans, but ultimately that’s my responsibility and the board’s responsibility.”Nick Hockley will step into Cricket Australia•Getty Images

While CA had been working on plans based on projections for the loss of up to 50% of revenue next summer, Eddings confirmed that the board was now reassessing the situation as it improved with each day, particularly in terms of Australia. However, he underlined CA’s view that the T20 World Cup, due to be played in October and November, was still too complex an undertaking.”I sit on the ICC and we’re having meetings as we speak. It’s a bit of a moving feast at the moment,” he said. “I’d say it’s unlikely, while it hasn’t been formally called off this year or postponed, trying to get 16 countries into Australia in the current world where most countries are still going through Covid-19 spiking, I think it’s unrealistic or would be very, very difficult. We’ve put forward a number of different options to the ICC we’re working through at the moment.”Prior to the 2015 World Cup, Hockley had worked on the London Olympics, so brings a deep wealth of event management experience. Hockley has also worked closely with the former CA chief executive, James Sutherland, who remained a director on the T20 World Cup board following his departure from the CA CEO’s chair after nearly 18 years at the helm.”I’d say it’s still sinking in, it’s very fresh this news over the last 24 hours, so really my focus and priority is the immediate term and it’s really just work towards getting the best possible summer away,” Hockley said. “There’s a huge amount of work going on around [T20 World Cup] contingency planning. I think there’s meetings coming up next month at ICC level where some decisions will be made and we’ve got a fantastic local organising committee who are busy preparing for every eventuality and the decision that will come forth.”The departure of Roberts ends an eventful period of a little more than 18 months in the role, culminating in an ugly and ongoing dispute between CA, its state associations and the Australian Cricketers Association over disputed cost-cutting amid the financial shocks brought on by Covid-19.”It’s been a privilege to lead and serve the sport I love as CEO of Cricket Australia,” Roberts said. “Our team of staff and players are outstanding people who contribute so much to the game and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together. I’d like to thank the army of volunteers in communities across the country who are the lifeblood of our sport, enabling kids to experience the game and to dream about emulating their heroes in our national teams. As a lifelong and passionate member of the cricket community, I look forward to seeing the game thrive into the future.”

Joe Root: Bad light issue 'needs to be addressed' by game's authorities

England captain suggests earlier start times, better floodlights and “lighter” balls

George Dobell at the Ageas Bowl17-Aug-2020England’s Test captain, Joe Root, believes the issue of bad light “needs to be addressed” so the game can avoid the farcical scenes witnessed at the Ageas Bowl in recent days.Only 134.3 overs were possible in the second Test – 38.1 of them on the final day – as a combination of bad light and conditions deemed too wet to play conspired to ruin any chance of either England or Pakistan pushing for victory. Only eight Tests in England or Wales in which any play has been possible have been worse hit by such conditions; all but one were not five-day encounters. That left Root calling for a variety of “different things that could be trialled” to avoid such examples in the future. Among the measures Root suggested was earlier start times, the use of a brighter ball and improved floodlights to ensure play could continue regardless of the light.ALSO READ: Crawley makes most of chance as second Test ends in drawBut he cautioned against expecting a change to start times ahead of the final Test of this series, which is scheduled to begin on the same ground on Friday, arguing that agreements had been made with Pakistan ahead of the series and it may be too late to change them.”Maybe we could start half-an-hour earlier if we’ve lost time,” Root said. “You don’t necessarily have to start every game at 10.30am, but maybe if you need to make time up that is something to look at so light isn’t as much of an issue. It’s something to look at. It may be a possibility.”There an MoU [Memorandum of Understanding] that’s been put in place [ahead of this series], so I’m not sure how flexible things are to change. But moving forwards, it is something that could potentially be looked at beyond this series.”Maybe there’s got to be a minimum standard of floodlights and [we should] play on throughout. Maybe we could use a lighter red ball rather than a dark Dukes ball.”There are different things that could be trialled to avoid similar scenarios in future. It’s not very often you lose so much cricket to bad light, but it’s frustrating and a huge talking point. I think it needs to be addressed somewhere, somehow.”At present, every day of Test cricket in England starts at 11am regardless of the amount of overs lost in the game. The ECB has, in the past, argued that to change the start time at short notice – such as the evening before – could leave ticket holders missing the start of play. There have also been concerns expressed at the help an earlier start might provide to seamers able to exploit any dew or other moisture in the pitch or wider environment.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Many of Root’s concerns were echoed by the Pakistan bowling coach, Waqar Younis, who also called for more trials into measures that could mitigate against the problem of bad light.”Worldwide the pink ball is only really being played with on a trial basis as we see if we run into problems,” Waqar said. “In day-night matches, there is strong evidence to suggest the pink ball could work, but in England, only one pink-ball Test has happened.”I don’t yet know how a pink Dukes ball is going to behave in this country. If conditions are overcast and the lights are on, maybe it’ll do too much. The toss becomes very important.”Purely for revenue and entertainment, it’s a promising idea, but everyone will need to adapt. We need to see more pink-ball use in domestic cricket in England to get the full picture. We need further trials in England.”I feel unless the light gets really bad, we can stay out there a bit longer.”Root, meanwhile, said he had sympathy both for the match officials and groundstaff and suggested it was an issue which needed to be addressed “higher up the chain”. ESPNcricinfo understands the ICC cricket committee will review issues around bad light at their next meeting.”I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game be affected by bad light as much as this,” Root said. “Which is very frustrating. But it’s been very wet throughout the week and the ground staff have done everything they can to get it dry.”I do think it’s hard to blame the umpires here. I think there’s something bigger that needs looking up higher up the chain. This is way above my pay grade.”Root also provided some insight into the challenges posed by playing in poor light, suggesting safety was only one of the aspects to consider.”There’s an element of danger that comes into it,” he said. “Sometimes when you are facing someone really quick it can feel a little bit more dangerous.”But sometimes with the bat in hand, if I’m brutally honest, it becomes more challenging [in poor light]. It can be quite hard trying to pick which way a bowler is looking to swing it or you might be trying to spot a googly from a legspinner. That can be frustrating at times.”But it’s the field, square of the wicket, where you feel most vulnerable. You don’t want to be at fault, running in the wrong direction or missing a big chance. Similarly, the umpires might feel in danger as well if someone crunches a pull shot or hits one straight back at them. They have also got to be able to see and make the right decisions on the field.”

£115 million attacking duo want to join Chelsea as their agents open talks

An attacking duo are both eyeing a move to Chelsea this summer, with their agents opening talks in a bid to make the transfers happen.

Maresca arrival announced as Chelsea kickstart transfer plans

On Monday, Chelsea officially announced the arrival of new head coach Enzo Maresca, who comes in to replace Mauricio Pochettino as a new era begins at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca excited to work with £60,000-per-week Chelsea ace, really rates him

The Blues officially announced Maresca’s arrival on Monday.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 4, 2024

Pochettino signed off his final Premier League campaign as Chelsea boss in excellent fashion and even managed to secure Conference League qualification for next season. He also guided the Blues to five wins in his final five league games to seal their place in Europe, but this form wasn't enough to keep the Argentine in a job as both the tactician and Chelsea chiefs agreed to part company by mutual consent.

Chelsea 2-1 Bournemouth

Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

Nottingham Forest 2-3 Chelsea

Chelsea 5-0 West Ham

Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

After weeks of speculation, Maresca has now been confirmed as Pochettino's heir, and it is believed that the Italian's transfer plans are being set in motion. Chelsea have already sealed a Bosman deal for defender Tosin Adarabioyo, with Fulham announcing today that the centre-back has left Craven Cottage.

Elsewhere in the squad, it is widely reported that co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart are looking at making fresh attacking signings as well, both at centre-forward and out wide, in a bid to bolster Maresca's options.

Maresca apparently wants Inter Milan frontman Lautaro Martinez at Chelsea, according to some reports, but intense speculation also surrounds Crystal Palace ace Michael Olise and RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko as attacking alternatives.

The latter's contract includes a £55 million release clause, which would allow Chelsea to bypass club negotiations and discuss terms directly with Sesko himself. This figure is reportedly tantalising for Chelsea, as well as Arsenal, given the Slovenia international bagged 18 goals in all competitions last season.

Olise, meanwhile, can leave Palace for around £60 million. The Englishman is also attracting interest from elite Premier League sides, including Chelsea, after another brilliant campaign at Selhurst Park and especially under Oliver Glasner.

Sesko and Olise both want to join Chelsea this summer

In a promising update on Chelsea's links to the £115 million attacking duo, Foot Mercato journalist Santi Auona has shared some news on X this week.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise

The reporter claims that both Sesko and Olise are keen on joining Chelsea this summer, with their agents opening talks over making the deals potentially happen.

"Chelsea are considering Michel Olise and Benjamin Šeško as a top target for their attack," wrote Aouna.

"Talks have started talks with their agents. Both players keen on the move to Chelsea. Other PL clubs are there."

Sesko's prolific nature and relatively affordable price tag make him an attractive option for Maresca, not to mention his towering 6ft 5 frame. The perks of a move for Olise are his proven top-flight experience, with the winger netting 10 goals and bagging a further six assists last season alone.

Wolves one of main candidates for £9m ace with more assists than Ait-Nouri

After an excellent first season under Gary O'Neil, Wolverhampton Wanderers have turned their attention towards rewarding the manager with a possible left-back boost in the transfer window.

Wolves transfer news

For clubs outside of the Premier League's top six, impressive campaigns can come at a price with those at the top of English football and around Europe more likely to circle around their top stars. And that looks set to be the case at Wolves this summer, with Pedro Neto and Matheus Cunha already linked with summer departures to Arsenal and Manchester United respectively.

Wolves star Pedro Neto celebrates

The attacking duo enjoyed standout seasons in the Midlands, earning such links as a result, with Neto battling injuries whilst still maintaining his form when available throughout the season.

Both departures would undoubtedly deal Wolves a frustrating hole and two major gaps to fill, but they're not the only ones linked with a move away. Reports have also cast doubts over Rayan Ait-Nouri's future in the Midlands, with Liverpool mentioned as a potential destination. Suddenly, O'Neil could be looking at losing three of his best players in what would leave his side instantly battling against the odds in the Premier League at the start of next season.

Wolves eyeing £30m signing who’s a dream Adams alternative

This Premier League forward could be the perfect partner for Matheus Cunha.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 2, 2024

After being pushed aside under Julen Lopetegui, Ait-Nouri found himself restored to the Wolves side by O'Neil this season in what turned out to be a stroke of genius by the former Bournemouth boss. Now, however, if the defender repays that faith by heading for the exit door, those at Molineux may have a potential successor lined up.

According to A Bola, Wolves are one of the main candidates to sign Francisco Moura from Famalicao this summer in a deal that could be worth just €10m (£9m). Moura has impressed in Portugal and could follow a famous trend of Portuguese players finding themselves on their way to the Midlands, following in the footsteps of the likes of Neto and Ruben Neves.

With five assists to his name – three more than Ait-Nouri managed this season – Moura certainly represents a solid option to turn to when looking to ease any potential summer blow.

Wolves wise to target Moura

Still just 24 years old, Moura would represent smart business for Wolves, especially if Ait-Nouri does leave in the coming months. The Famalicao man, at just £9m could quickly turn into a bargain deal if he took his form from Portugal into the Premier League. Replacing Ait-Nouri will be no easy task, however, with the left-back attracting the interest of Liverpool for good reason.

Having bounced back well from losing Neves last summer, Wolves will be hoping to enter the start of next season in similar form no matter who they lose in the coming months. What's more, if links to Moura are anything to go by, the Midlands club could be willing to spend when it comes to replacing any outgoings this summer.

Jos Buttler desperately needs to convert his start after lacklustre keeping effort

Time running out as Buttler’s sloppy glovework lets Pakistan off the hook

George Dobell at Emirates Old Trafford06-Aug-2020Whatever Jos Buttler achieves in the remainder of his playing career, his place in the folklore of English cricket is secure.Already established as perhaps the best white-ball batsman his country has ever produced, he kept his nerve under considerable pressure to complete the run out that secured victory in the World Cup final. There may have been better moments in the history of English cricket, but it’s not especially easy to remember them. His subsequent decision to auction the shirt he was wearing when he completed the run-out underlined the impression he is, very much, one of the good guys. The proceeds were donated to help the NHS.So, you can understand why the England management want him around. He is a selfless presence, a calm voice, a talented player and, potentially, a destructive batsman.ALSO READ: Buttler still ‘vital’ insists Root as pressure mountsBut there are serious questions to ask about him as a Test cricketer. Now playing his 45th Test, he has one century to his name and averages 31.63.While that might not sound too bad, it needs to be seen in the context of the 17 Tests – including the current one – he has played since the start of 2019. In those, he has averaged 24.46 with four half-centuries. Two of those came in a dead rubber in St Lucia; one other came when the Ashes had been conceded at The Oval. His 67 against West Indies a couple of weeks ago was his first half-century in eight Tests. He desperately needs – and England desperately need him – to convert his start in England’s first innings into a substantial contribution.Whether he does or not, there must be doubts over his continuing role as keeper. He missed three chances during Pakistan’s first innings of the series. And if two of the chances were relatively demanding, the third was as regulation as can be expected. He also fluffed a run-out chance when his throw to the bowlers’ end looped comically wide.Jos Buttler endured a tough couple of days in the field•Getty Images

They were costly errors. The first two – a dropped catch and a missed stumping – reprieved Shan Masood when he had 45. He eventually made 156.To be fair to Buttler, his keeping has been generally sound since he reclaimed the gloves at the end of last year. He didn’t drop any chances in the four Tests he played in South Africa or the one he played in New Zealand. But he did drop one in Southampton and it was costly. Jermaine Blackwood, on 20, gloved a chance down the leg side but Buttler was unable to cling on. Blackwood went on to make 95 that ensured a West Indies victory. Was it a tough chance? Well, keepers whose footwork is better tend to make chances appear easier. It wasn’t easy, but this is Test cricket and a generation ago, when keepers were picked primarily for their ability to catch rather than their ability to make runs, it would have been considered regulation.Spare a thought for Dom Bess, too. As if it wasn’t hard enough trying to pursue as a career as an international spinner when you are 22 years old and far from certain of a place in your county side, Bess is also failing to gain the support he should be able to expect from his keeper. All three of the chances Buttler missed were off his bowling. He finished with 1 for 74; he deserved considerably better. The worry for England is they are scheduled to play seven Tests in Asia – two in Sri Lanka and five in either India or the UAE – this winter. That means they require a keeper who is proficient standing up to the spinners. On this evidence, they do not have one in Buttler. He’s yet to complete a stumping in his Test career. It’s not as if England are struggling for alternatives, either. In Ben Foakes, England have an excellent keeper who has already shown in his brief international career that he has the talent and temperament to contribute more with the bat. He made a century on Test debut and claimed the player-of-the-match award in his only ODI. Within a day of keeping at Test level, he had completed more stumpings than Buttler.None of this should be a surprise, really. Going into this match, Buttler had played 109 first-class games and averaged 32.06. That is not a small sample size. He wasn’t first-choice keeper at Somerset and there’s considerable doubt whether he would be at Lancashire. It is unrealistic and probably unreasonable to expect him to go up a level and perform better.ALSO READ: Stubborn Smith staking reputation on Buttler’s Test careerBut he is Ed Smith’s signature selection. For when Buttler was recalled in May 2018, Smith made it very clear that it was on his personal insistence. There certainly wasn’t much statistical evidence to support it: Buttler hadn’t played a first-class match in eight months and hadn’t made a first-class century in the best part of four years. It worked for a while. In the next 10 Tests, Buttler averaged 44.70, registered his maiden century and added six half-centuries. It may be relevant that he kept wicket in only one of those games. In a low-scoring series in Sri Lanka, he was particularly influential.Buttler missed a stumping chance with Masood on 45•Pool via Getty Images

But the start of 2019 is a long time ago. Buttler has benefitted from more patience and more chances than most. Whatever he contributes off the pitch, he has not contributed the runs required or the dismissals expected on it. Yet Smith and co. appear reluctant – some would say stubbornly reluctant – to accept their hunch was wrong. The other concern for England is that, at some stage, Buttler’s red-ball disappointments might seep into his white-ball cricket. In the shorter formats he is such an irrepressible, confident figure and he’s so integral to England’s hopes of becoming the first men’s team to hold both T20 and 50-over World Cups simultaneously. Here, though, he looked weary, disappointed, and bereft of confidence. At some stage, the England management might need to cut him free in Test cricket so as not to spoil him as a limited-overs player. He is, without doubt, a brilliant international cricketer. It’s just there’s increasing evidence to suggest he’s not a brilliant Test cricketer.

"Very fast" Man United target tells his agents he wants to sign for Arsenal

A top Manchester United transfer target has made it clear, via his representatives, that he wants to join Arsenal as a priority this summer.

Arsenal identify attacking signings for Arteta

The Gunners wish to reinforce their attacking options ahead of 2024/25 after very narrowly missing out on the Premier League title last season.

Arsenal hold fresh agent talks as they eye £34 million Sesko alternative

The Gunners could get him for even cheaper than Sesko’s £55m release clause.

Arsenal pushed Man City all the way to the final day, but fell just short despite accumulating 89 points and scoring 91 top-flight goals. Kai Havertz impressed in a makeshift forward role under Mikel Arteta, chipping in with 13 goals and seven assists over 37 league appearances.

However, despite the German's form, it is believed Arteta personally wants to sign a young Havertz partner for Arsenal this summer, and one who can help to lead the line.

A new striker to alternate with the former Bayer Leverkusen starlet is on the agenda, and one name who won't stop being mentioned in tandem with Arsenal is RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko.

The 6 foot 5 centre-forward scored 18 goals in all competitions, and the £55 million release clause in his contract is tempting elite clubs across Europe. Arsenal chiefs are said to be confident Sesko will choose to join, though, after making him a proposal behind the scenes (TEAMtalk).

Sesko makes it clear that he wants to join Arsenal

According to HITC, Sesko has made it clear via intermediaries that he wants to join Arsenal despite serious interest from Man United, Paris-Saint Germain and Chelsea among others.

Chelsea, in particular, are working hard to sway the 21-year-old, but it is the Emirates Stadium that stands out as his preferred destination as things stand. As well as his proficiency in front of goal, Sesko stands out for his physical attributes, while he possesses top speed for such a tall player.

"It was very exciting to see such a tall player with such good coordination, good speed, not as fast as he is today, and a very soft touch on the ball. That impressed me enormously," said his agent, Elvis Basanovic, to AS in 2021.

"I think he is a very complete forward who can score with his head, with his right foot, with his left foot, inside the area, from medium distance, after dribbling or completing a collective action. He is very fast, in some games he reaches a speed of over 36km/h which makes him one of the fastest forwards in the world.

"But it is also important to say that he is only 18 years old and is just beginning his career. That is why he must keep his feet on the ground, concentrate and continue working hard every day for his development. I don't want to let him think that he already did something in his career. That would be very bad."
