Tottenham Hotspur have placed the recent five-match slide in the Premier League firmly behind them by responding with two convincing victories in succession.
Despite a raft of injuries and suspensions, Ange Postecoglou's side will still be confident that they can defeat an in-form Everton team at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium this afternoon, with three points certain to move them ahead of Manchester City in fourth place, temporarily at least.
Should a positive result be achieved then it will be crucial that Dejan Kulusevski is performing at the standard that has captured the awe of the Spurs support across recent weeks.
Dejan Kulusevski's stats this season
Kulusevski ebbed and flowed from form last season but has made some remarkable progress this term, currently boasting five goals and two assists in the Premier League.
Not a bad return, but direct contributions do not tell the full story for Kulusevski, who is a non-stop running machine and an absolute menace for opposition defenders, averaging 2.3 key passes and 4.3 ball recoveries per game and completing 83% of his passes.
Sky Sports' Jamie Weir has been particularly impressed by his recent performances, saying: "Dejan Kulusevski really is a special special player. Works so hard, covers every blade of grass. Hell of an engine on him, and just so much heart."
While James Maddison's ongoing injury absence has been a big setback for Postecoglou's Spurs revolution, Kulusevski is producing increasingly influential efforts, and he will be sure to have his say against Everton.
While the 23-year-old might be the creative engine, it could be Richarlison who plays the most important part this afternoon, with the Brazilian firing himself into form across recent weeks.
Richarlison could dismantle Everton
It's fair to say that Richarlison hasn't been great since signing for Tottenham from Everton for £60m in 2022, only scoring one goal across the duration of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign.
But he clearly welcomed Postecoglou's summer appointment and demonstrated discernible improvements, with a return of five goals and three assists from 15 appearances across all competitions this season.
As per FBref, the 26-year-old ranks among the top 7% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 6% for tackles, the top 7% for interceptions and the top 1% for blocks per 90, highlighting his creative threat and the defensive contribution that has prompted Spurs reporter Alasdair Gold to dub him a "nuisance" for rival players.
Returning from groin surgery at the end of November, Richarlison has been shifted back to a centre-forward role and has responded with a couple of excellent displays, scoring three times from two matches.
This rekindled Midas touch in front of goal will be important against a resilient Everton backline, and the menacing Richarlison will only be too happy to score at his former club's expense.
With Kulusevski and Heung-min Son pulling the strings behind him, the 5 foot 10 Richarlison could produce another sublime goalscoring display to continue a budding resurgence that could pay dividends for the Lilywhites down the line.
Her 3 of 12 restricted Sri Lanka to a below-par score before the hosts chased down the target with over five overs to spare
The Report by Liam Brickhill at Newlands01-Feb-2019
Dane van Niekerk sets off after bowling Mithali Raj for a duck•ICC
South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk’s all-round brilliance set up a resounding seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the first T20I at Newlands. Van Niekerk led the way with three cheap wickets as Sri Lanka were held to 90 for 8, and then followed that up with an unbeaten 71 from 55 deliveries to complete the hosts’ chase with more than five overs to spare.Sri Lanka captain Chamari Atapattu called correctly at the toss and opted to give her team the chance of setting a total but van Niekerk’s 3 for 12 scuppered a good start and rattled the middle order.Hasini Perera combined with Anushka Sanjeewani in an opening stand of 20, Sanjeewani swiping two leg-side boundaries in Masabata Klaas’ first over but then chipping a drive to Tumi Sekhukhune in the covers attempting a third. After her dismissal, Hasini helped to guide Sri Lanka to the reasonably stable position of 26 for 1 at the end of the Powerplay, but the innings began to stagnate as van Niekerk brought herself on with the field spread and started to choke the flow of runs. Her first over went for just two runs, and with the first ball of her third she had a frustrated Hasini caught at short fine leg by Lara Goodall for 27 – the top score of the innings. In her next over, van Niekerk struck twice to have Shashikala Siriwardene caught by a backpedaling Shabnim Ismail at long-off before bowling a slogging Atapattu with one that spun into the left-hander.In the very next over, Sekhukhune flattened Nilakshi de Silva’s leg stump with a full, swinging delivery and Sri Lanka were floundering at 53 for 5 in the 14th over. Imalka Mendis struck two late fours in her 25 to boost the run rate a little, but Sri Lanka’s eventual total was well under par.Van Niekerk showed just how far beyond a competitive total the visitors were when she strode to the crease and stroked four fours to motor through the Powerplay at a run a ball. Unafraid to loft the ball, she brought up a 40-ball fifty in the 11th over, crunching three fours in four balls off Inoka Ranaweera.By then, South Africa were already closing in on victory, and wickets at the other end did little to stem van Niekerk’s charge. Tazmin Brits was the next highest scorer with 10, but van Niekerk entered the 70s and ended the game with her 13th four, slapping medium-pacer Udeshika Prabodhani straight back over her head to the boundary.
Tottenham are said to be weighing up an offer to sign a "role model" defensive alternative to Genoa star Radu Dragusin as talks for the Romanian persist.
Spurs working on Dragusin deal
Earlier this week, reliable transfer source Fabrizio Romano shared news that Spurs have already agreed personal terms with Dragusin and negotiations are expected to continue over the weekend.
However, the presence of Serie A side Napoli appears to be complicating things somewhat, and there are some reports in Italy that they've even reached a draft agreement over Dragusin.
While it is believed Dragusin wants to join Spurs, it appears Ange Postecoglou faces stiff competition from abroad for the 21-year-old's signature.
Forward "on the verge" of joining Tottenham with "final negotiations today"
It’s been a surprise development this morning.
ByEmilio Galantini Jan 6, 2024
He's been a star player for Genoa under Alberto Gilardino this season, making 19 Serie A appearances as a starter and even chipping in with two goals in that time.
His young age and sky-high potential also makes the player a pretty enticing target for Spurs, but that isn't to say the Lilywhites don't have alternative options to Dragusin.

One of them, according to recent reports, is Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.
The Englishman is out of contract at the end of this season, making him a pretty viable and affordable option for Spurs with Premier League experience to boot.
Tottenham weighing up offer for Kelly
According to broadcast giant Sky Sports, Tottenham are weighing up an offer to sign Kelly from Bournemouth, either in January or in the summer when his contract expires.
The 25-year-old is attracting interest from abroad as well as from clubs in England, with previous reports suggesting Kelly would consider a move to Spurs if offered the chance.
Lloyd Kelly
Sky says major European clubs like AC Milan, Juventus and Stuttgart are also interested in a move for Kelly, who is free to open talks with them over a pre-contract agreement for the summer.
The Englishman was targeted by Spurs over the summer window, and it appears they are still real fans of Bournemouth's "role model" player.
“He’s a really good person. He’d give his time to anybody, and he’s an amazing role model," said Bournemouth's former academy manager Gary Probert on Kelly to The Athletic.
"The local lad that lived a stone’s throw away from the stadium, that comes through, plays in the team. He’s the poster boy, really.
“He’s an amazing role model for all of our young players, not just because of the football he plays for his country, in the Premier League and all of that, but just how he is as a person. If he walked into the academy now, you wouldn’t know he’s played in the Premier League and is an England Under-21 international.”

Central Districts won five of the eight matches they played in 2018-19 with their captain Greg Hay finishing second on the top-scorer’s list

Central Districts are Plunket Shield champions once again, making it the first time in over fifty years that they’ve won back-to-back first-class titles. The New Zealand domestic season came to a close on Wednesday with Greg Hay’s side 21 points clear of their closest rivals, Canterbury, on top of the points table.”It’s a pretty special moment to do it in my first year as captain,” Hay said. “But I think a lot of the work had been done over the last few years to get us in this position. And coming in to take over from Will Young, to take over a successful side already, with a lot of the foundation already laid, but it’s obviously still very special to win it in my first year.”Central Districts won five of the eight matches they played in 2018-19 with Hay finishing second on the top-scorer’s list with 633 runs, including a career-best 226 in December. “The beauty of four-day cricket is that it doesn’t change a lot, especially as an opening batter. You just go out and be consistent about your routine, doing the same things day in, day out and that’s how I go about at. Managed to be reasonably consistent over the last two years which sets the platform for the team in terms of batting and obviously we’ve got a talented bunch behind me to come in and play a few shots.”It was 1968 when Central Districts last won back-to-back first-class trophies, and this was their second of the year. They won the Super Smash T20 tournament, beating Northern Districts thanks to their superior bowling strength. In fact, Hay highlighted that as one of the team’s key strengths in long-form cricket as well, with Ryan McCone (24), Doug Bracewell (22) and Seth Rance (22) among the top-10 wicket-takers.”Ryan’s had some injury problems over the last couple of years but this year he’s managed to stay fit and he showed his class. He’s probably one of the less heralded of our bowlers. You almost think when we’re at full-strength we have all internationals playing and he probably might not even be in the starting line-up. But for him, obviously, with how the season turned out, with all the guys away, he carried a big load for us at the start of the season and ran in to some red-hot form in the back end. He was, really, the go-to guy for me. I knew I could throw him the ball and he’d be straight on the spot and manage to do something with the old ball.”Dougie, another one, obviously phenomenal. Runs in all day. And then we’ve got Seth who’s had another good season with the red-ball, swinging it at the top. We’ve got Tips who’s a bit different again and obviously Ajaz Patel. We’ve had quite a few that have contributed to the group this year, so it’s been good. Obvilusy Milny when he’s fit he’s been there as well . It’s a pretty potent bowling attack but to have some of that glue that holds it together like Ryan or Dougie, that’s key.”It was also the perfect send-off for coach Heinrich Malan who ends his six-year stay at Central Districts by helping win their 11th title in domestic cricket.

In the ODI rankings, England have held on to their top position.Following the update, series from 2015-16 were removed from the calculations and results from 2016-17 and 2017-18 were weighted at 50%, with series after that weighted at 100%.Success against Ireland and Pakistan will mean England host the upcoming World Cup ranked No. 1 in the format.India, who have held the top spot in Tests since October 2016, were on 116 points before the update but their 3-0 win over South Africa and 2-1 win in Sri Lanka during the 2015-16 season have dropped out of the ranking period, meaning they lost three points. New Zealand, meanwhile, were on 108 but have had their two 2-0 defeat to Australia expunged from their record, gaining three points to move to 111.In the only change of positions on the Test table, England have overtaken Australia to fourth position and are on 105 points. Australia are on 98 points after dropping six points they had held from winning four of their five series in 2015-16. Further down the table, the gap between seventh-placed Pakistan and eighth-placed West Indies has been trimmed from 11 to two points. In order to go into the World Cup as the top ranked ODI side, England will need to beat Ireland in Friday’s one-off ODI and then beat Pakistan 3-2 or better at home later this month. If they lose to Ireland, then beat Pakistan 4-1 or better, they will still hold on to their position.South Africa have overtaken New Zealand in ODIs, moving into third position, while another change in positions sees West Indies moving ahead of Sri Lanka to seventh place. No team has dropped out of the top 10, and the 10 top-ranked sides are all taking part in the World Cup.Namibia, Oman and USA were all awarded ODI status at the end of the World Cricket League Division 2 competition and will join the rankings once they have played the requisite eight qualifying matches. Papua New Guinea join the rankings immediately having played several ODIs prior to April 2018, and Netherlands, who already had ODI status, will need to play two more ODIs to achieve a ranking. The annual update to the T20I team rankings will be made on May 3.

While three wins from three has proven the perfect way to start 2024 for Leeds United, manager Daniel Farke will still be aware that there is much work still to do in order to bridge the gap between his rampant side and Ipswich Town in second.
With seven points separating the Whites and Kieran McKenna's high-flying outfit – with Southampton also now firmly in the picture – the Yorkshire giants really will need to put a consistent run of form together over the coming weeks and months if they are to mount a proper push for automatic promotion.
To aid that challenge, Farke is likely to require further reinforcements to help bolster a squad that was depleted by numerous departures over the summer, albeit with the only activity so far this month having been further outgoings, in the form of Djed Spence, Darko Gyabi and Luke Ayling.
Although that peripheral trio were happily shown the door by the Elland Road side, there may be fears that the squad has so far been weakened rather than strengthened in the winter window – despite the positive news that teenage sensation Archie Gray has signed a new 'long-term deal' at the club.
The hope will be that fresh faces will arrive before the close of the window at the start of next month, with numerous targets having already been mentioned in recent weeks, including a sparkling talent who is currently operating in the Premier League.
Leeds eyeing ex-Sheffield United man
According to Phil Hay of The Athletic, while Farke and co are prioritising the signing of at least one new full-back – amid the departures of Spence and Ayling – there could also be a fresh face to bolster the attacking ranks, in the form of Bournemouth's David Brooks.
As per Hay's recent report, Leeds believe an 'extra attacking midfielder' may prove 'useful' between now and the end of the season, with Brooks – who left Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United back in 2018 – said to be a 'player of interest'.
David Brooks
The Cherries are, however, wary of allowing the 26-year-old to depart on loan this month, although Hay suggested that such a stance could 'soften' as the window edges towards its climax, offering hope that a deal for the Wales international could be wrapped up.
Although the 5 foot 8 playmaker has been restricted to just two league starts this season, he will likely be raring to go to prove his talents once again with a consistent run of game time.
How David Brooks would fit in at Leeds
For much of the campaign so far, Farke has experimented with more unorthodox options in the number ten berth, with former Swansea City striker Joel Piroe featuring predominantly in that role, while fellow forward Georginio Rutter has also taken on that challenge in recent weeks.
Being able to acquire a more natural fit in that role behind the striker, such as Brooks, would certainly be a wise move, with the "Welsh wizard" – as described by the Bournemouth Echo's Jack Tynner – typically operating in an attacking midfield berth or on the flanks in his senior career to date.
Once on the books at Bramall Lane – where he registered 11 goals and assists in just 37 games for the Blades – the Warrington-born ace has now almost spent six years at the Vitality Stadium, albeit having seen much of that spell cruelly hampered after being diagnosed with cancer back in October 2021.
To his credit, Brooks has bravely fought his way back to establish himself as part of Andoni Iraola's first-team squad, producing a respectable haul of two goals and one assist in 16 games in all competitions this season, despite largely being utilised off the bench.
For Leeds, if a deal is to be struck, they will be hoping to coax out the type of performances that the 27-cap international had shown prior to his spell on the sidelines, notably registering 11 goals and assists in the Championship in 2020/21, as well as previously scoring seven goals and contributing five assists in the Premier League in 2018/19.
Brooks' 2020/21 Championship record
32 games (25 starts)
5 goals
6 assists
6 'big chances' created
1.1 key passes per game
79% pass accuracy rate
1.4 fouls won per game
1 successful dribble per game
Stats via Sofascore
Evidently a player who can unlock a defence with a piece of creative magic – having created nine 'big chances' in that debut season at Bournemouth – as well as also being able to find the back of the net himself, Brooks would provide another weapon to Farke's attacking arsenal.
The hope would be that he could also strike up a partnership with his international colleague, Daniel James, with the former Manchester United man currently flourishing under the one-time Norwich City boss.
Daniel James' season by numbers
It is fair to say that James has finally found a home for himself this season after a turbulent last few years, with the oft-maligned winger having established himself as a key figure for the promotion hopefuls.
Leeds forward Dan James.
The 26-year-old had endured a difficult two years or so after joining from the Red Devils in 2021, scoring just four goals in his debut season at Elland Road, before being shipped off on loan to Fulham last term – where he netted just three times in 23 appearances.
With the likes of Jack Harrison and Luis Sinisterra no longer at the club, however, James has taken his chance under the new regime, scoring nine goals and registering six assists in 25 league games – the best return of his senior career so far.
Farke can then combine the winger's "raw pace" – as hailed by Ryan Giggs – with Brooks' majestic midfield quality, with the latter man having previously been lauded by former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe for his "creative flair" as he can "do a little bit of everything".
The Whites are seemingly keen to strengthen their ranks this month, amid their hunt for promotion.
ByRobbie Walls Jan 18, 2024
The £50k-per-week talent may still be in the process of getting back to his prior elite levels, yet surrounded by familiar faces – such as James, Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu – he could well flourish in the second tier at Elland.
Not just then a dream partner for James, Brooks could also represent a dream January signing for the Yorkshire side.
