Hearts: Jambos star has seen his value rise to £19m after leaving

Heart of Midlothian have suffered a few transfer howlers over the years, with a variety of players either leaving for nothing or being sold far too cheaply.

A perfect example is that of Josh Ginnelly. The former Hearts winger joined the club for free when his Preston North End contract expired in 2021, and he went on to be a big success at Tynecastle.

Across two full seasons, the Englishman scored 18 goals and grabbed 11 assists in a hugely productive spell in Edinburgh for the player.

As he was coming towards the end of his contract last season, Hearts offered him an improved deal, yet he turned it down and left the Jambos for nothing, going on to join Swansea City shortly after.

It represented a massive blow for Steven Naismith, who could have used his abilities this term, but it isn’t the first time Hearts have allowed this to happen.

John Souttar is another recent example of a player coming into their best form departing the club for nothing, as he joined Rangers on a pre-contract agreement last summer, yet there is another name who Hearts supporters will wish had remained at the Gorgie outfit for a few years longer – Aaron Hickey.

How much did Hearts sell Aaron Hickey for?

The left-back emerged as one of the finest talents the academy had produced in years during the 2019/20 campaign, going on to make 30 appearances across all competitions, and it was clear that he wouldn’t be with them for long.

Brentford defender Aaron Hickey.

Robbie Neilson, who had just returned to the managerial role, expected plenty of potential suitors for the youngster, saying: “I expect interest but my hope is that he comes back to pre-season.

“My hope is he plays for us over the season and we can tie him down to a longer deal.

“He’s still a young kid and he still needs to develop. This is a great place for him to do that. Those will be conversations we have with him in the coming weeks and we’ll see how it goes. We want to keep hold of our best players and Aaron comes into that category.

“He’s shown great potential but at the moment it is potential. From Aaron’s perspective, it’s important he plays matches.”

The motivational talk didn’t work as Hickey ended up signing for Italian side Bologna for a £1.5m transfer fee. This sounds like a solid bit of business, especially as he was coming into the final year of his deal, but his performances since departing Tynecastle have proven that the club had a shocker by selling him for so cheap.

What happened to Aaron Hickey?

The defender enjoyed a wonderful two-year spell in Serie A, going on to make 48 appearances for the club while even scoring five goals during his stint in Italy.

During his second season at Bologna, Hickey performed well and ranked in fourth place across the squad for goals and assists and seventh for successful dribbles per game, giving a demonstration of his attacking intent despite playing at left-back.

These displays caught the eyes of several teams and his brief spell in Italy was soon to be over, with a move back to British shores fast approaching.

Where is Aaron Hickey now?

Premier League side Brentford were mightily impressed with Hickey during his spell on the continent, and they managed to lure him to England, with the move costing the club £14m, a massive increase on the £1.5m Hearts sold him for just two years prior.

Manager Thomas Frank lauded the youngster upon his arrival, saying: "I am very pleased to sign Aaron.

"What he has already achieved in his career is very impressive. He is only 20 and has played a full season in Scotland as well as almost two seasons in Serie A.

"We think that Aaron is a player with great potential, who already has an impressive number of games at a good level under his belt.”

It has since gone on to be a great piece of business by the Bees, as they have turned Hickey from an extremely talented youngster into a player who is currently thriving in the English top flight.

Aaron Hickey

As per Sofascore, he ranked sixth among the squad for accurate passes per game last term along with ranking sixth for successful dribbles per game and tackles per game, indicating that he settled in well at the club.

The 5 foot 8 starlet is also versatile in that he can operate either on the left or right-hand side of the defence and this isn’t just a big boost for Frank, but also for Steve Clarke, the Scotland manager.

How much is Aaron Hickey worth now?

The 21-year-old has won 11 Scotland caps so far during his short career and there will be plenty more in the future. The defender was even praised recently by commentator Mark Donaldson in 2021 with regard to his flexibility.

He said: “Aaron Hickey just as comfortable on his right-foot. A potential option for Scotland at right-back in future to compete with Nathan Patterson?”

Aaron Hickey

He is only going to get better, especially as he plays more games in the Premier League and there is no doubt he will go on to play for a club such as Arsenal or Liverpool in the near future.

Having left Hearts for just £1.5m, Hickey is now valued at a staggering €21.8m (£19m) according to Football Transfers and this value should just keep increasing as time goes on.

Of course, it was inevitable that he was destined to leave Hearts for bigger and brighter things, yet if they had convinced him to sign a new deal during the summer of 2020 and held onto him for a season or two longer, they might’ve received a far greater transfer fee.

It was a major blow losing him so soon after shining in the first team, yet his progress should give the other youngsters in the academy plenty of hope that if they work hard and take the opportunities presented to them by Naismith, they might also get to experience the bright lights of Serie A or the Premier League in the future.

INEOS can fund Wharton bid by selling Man Utd’s future “£100m + footballer”

Manchester United have had a long-term interest in Crystal Palace central midfielder Adam Wharton, stretching back to the middle of last year.

The Red Devils were reportedly keen on a deal for him in the summer of 2024, when Erik Ten Hag was in charge. It was then reported this summer that Ruben Amorim wanted to bring the England international to Old Trafford.

With the January transfer window on the horizon, it has recently been reported that the club are planning to make a move for Wharton next month to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

What Adam Wharton can bring to Man Utd

Man United have been interested in the central midfielder for such a long time because he has been an incredibly impressive performer in the middle of the park for Palace.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The left-footed star has the technical ability and passing range that you would associate with a Spanish player, as shown in the clips below, whilst possessing the tigerish defensive qualities that you would associate with an English midfielder.

Wharton has averaged 2.6 tackles and interceptions per game, winning 56% of his ground duels in the Premier League this season, per Sofascore, whilst Casemiro has made 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game and won 55% of his ground duels for United.

The Brazilian, though, has only made 0.6 key passes per game and is yet to create a ‘big chance’ in the top-flight, per Sofascore, whilst Wharton has made 1.6 key passes per game and created six ‘big chances’ for Palace.

These statistics suggest that the Eagles star can replace Casemiro’s defensive contributions in midfield, and offer far more to the team in possession as a passer and as a creator.

In order for INEOS to fund a move to finally sign the English maestro, the Manchester United owners should ruthlessly cash in on Kobbie Mainoo.

How Man Utd can fund Wharton move

It has been reported that it will take more than the £67.5m that Palace raked in for Eberechi Eze to prise Wharton away from Selhurst Park, which could mean that INEOS need to raise funds to bring him in by selling one of their current players.

Reports suggest that Chelsea are leading a 12-team chase to sign Mainoo in the January transfer window, though it does not reveal whether they are looking at loan or permanent moves.

The England international was once described as “generational” by teammate Rasmus Hojlund, which seems to be a fair comment for a 20-year-old star who has racked up seven goals in 83 appearances for United, and ten caps for England, after coming through the academy.

However, as Amorim explained in the quote above, Mainoo has found himself in a position where he is competing with the captain, Bruno Fernandes, for a spot in the middle of the park.

The England international’s lack of minutes on the pitch in the Premier League is a cause for concern, hence why there are 12 clubs lining up moves for him in January, and this is why INEOS should ruthlessly cash in on him.

As you can see in the table above, Mainoo has rarely been used by Amorim in the Premier League, getting cameo minutes here and there, sometimes not even coming off the bench.

Having a ‘generational’ talent like the 20-year-old and not giving him regular minutes is a waste of resource, particularly given that TEAMtalk recently claimed that he is valued at £80m by United. Some, like United writer Alex Turk have even suggested this is a “£100m-plus footballer” in the making.

If INEOS are unwilling to sack Amorim and if the manager is unwilling to change his system to accommodate Mainoo, selling the midfielder for £80m could be the best option for all parties involved.

As sad as it would be for United to cash in on such a talented academy graduate, having an £80m-rated player who is rarely getting minutes on the pitch is not helpful to anyone, and that is the situation that United have found themselves in.

Given that Wharton, who we have explained could be a dream upgrade on Casemiro, could cost upwards of £67.5m, selling Mainoo for £80m could provide INEOS with the funds needed to finally bring the left-footed star to Old Trafford to bolster the squad in January.

It is a huge call for the owners to make, one that may not be popular with supporters, but it could be the right decision if it allows them to sign Wharton, who would arrive as a brilliant deep-lying midfielder to play alongside Bruno Fernandes.

Man Utd identify two priority targets who could each cost club-record fees

INEOS are planning to stabilise the club while making two big midfield signings in 2026.

Anderson's hard yards set new record

The years of bowling for England’s leading Test wicket-taker are reflected in a new landmark

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Apr-2018Few would blame James Anderson if he was feeling a little weary. With the last delivery of his 17th over in New Zealand’s second innings in Christchurch he had bowled more deliveries in Test cricket than any another pace bowler: 30,020.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Newcastle transfer news: Update on "reborn" £149k-p/w target

Newcastle United have been strongly linked with a move for Juventus star Adrien Rabiot, and a fresh report has revealed that PIF have taken their first step towards signing him in January.

What type of player is Adrien Rabiot?

At the Allianz Stadium, Rabiot is naturally a central, box-to-box midfielder who first joined the Serie A side from Paris Saint-Germain back in 2019, where he’s since gone on to make a total of 183 appearances to date, but there’s a chance that he could soon be heading for the exit door.

The France international’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and having firmly established himself as Massimiliano Allegri’s overall top-performing player so far this term with a WhoScored match rating of 7.50, he won’t be short of a potential suitor should he depart.

Back in June, Eddie Howe’s side saw an offer turned down for the 28-year-old, but recent reports have claimed that the black and white stripes remain interested and are, as it stands, the second favourites to secure his services behind Manchester United.

Now, a new update has emerged which would suggest that the northeast outfit are indeed firmly in the running to land their target and they have made a significant stride towards registering their admiration ahead of the window opening at the start of the new year.

Are Newcastle signing Adrien Rabiot?

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato.it (via Sport Witness), Rabiot has "received requests" from the Premier League, including one specifically from Newcastle United.

The Magpies are "looking at the possibility of exploiting" the central talisman's contract situation knowing that he could be available for a cut-price, and whilst it's stated that he is currently in negotiations over signing fresh terms, Allegri's side are "shaking" knowing that his long-term admirers could "make a move" in January.

Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

How many trophies has Adrien Rabiot won?

Since the start of his career, Rabiot has secured an outstanding 24 trophies for both club and country so he knows exactly what it takes to compete and be successful at the highest level, possessing the winning mentality required to come in and push a young Newcastle squad up one more level.

Sponsored by Adidas, the left-footed ace is strong in the defensive aspect of his game having made 16 tackles so far this season which is more than any of his fellow teammates, via FBRef, highlighting his desire to get stuck in, but he’s equally capable of making a positive impact at the opposite end of the pitch.

Juventus’ £149k-per-week earner already has three involvements (two assists and one goal) to his name in six outings in the Serie A, with his recent form over in Italy having seen him hailed a player “reborn” by members of the media.

Finally, Rabiot has the ability to operate slightly deeper in front of the backline and on the left-side of the midfield alongside his usual role in the centre of the park, so his versatility will be yet another attractive attribute to Howe, making this a no-brainer of a deal to pursue.

Wesley é a única notícia boa no inferno astral palmeirense

Seen 'better players than Fawad' in last three years – Inzamam

The chief selector says the decision to omit Fawad Alam was based purely on merit

Umar Farooq16-Apr-2018Unfazed by the severe criticism concerning the omission of batsman Fawad Alam, chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq insisted he has seen “better players in the last three years”. He has been passed over for national selection, and this time, it ignited nationwide anger.Alam’s selection – or lack thereof – has been an enigma for years. Despite the mounds of runs he accumulates year upon year in domestic cricket – his average in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy over the past four years has been 40.71, 55.54, 56 and 71.90 – the left-hander has been overlooked for Tests by various selection committees and captains over the past eight years. He made his Test debut in 2009, scoring 168, and played a further Test against New Zealand later that year, but was subsequently dropped, and hasn’t played Test cricket since. During the intervening years, he made it into the limited-overs squads occasionally and went on to play 38 ODIs and 24 T20Is until 2015. But it is Test cricket he is best suited to, his average in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy consistently well over 50.He was called up by Inzamam among the 25 probables in the fitness camp ahead of the Ireland and England tour, only to be overlooked yet again.”Fawad Alam is an outstanding player but in the last three years there are others at the top of the list,” Inzamam told ESPNcricinfo. “We got him here in the nets but we found Saad Ali to be better, and the decision to prefer Saad was unanimous, with input from all the coaching staff and captain. Fawad is a good player and we obviously can’t ignore his career average; that is why he was brought into the camp. During my tenure, I have given 12 to 14 players an opportunity and none of them have disappointed us. If you look back in the past three seasons, there are players who have scored more runs than Fawad Alam.”Dropping any player doesn’t mean we are disregarding them. It’s easy to pick players following scorecards or statistics, but there are many more things we take into consideration. I am not sure why Fawad wasn’t picked in the past before me but if you ask me about my tenure as chief selector, I have seen better players.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Alam was last picked in a Test squad in 2015 that played three matches against England, but he never made it into the playing XI. He sat out for several years because of a settled middle order comprising Misbah-ul-Haq, Sarfraz Ahmed, Younis Khan and Asad Shafiq. But with the exit of Misbah and Younis, Alam’s prospects looked bright. Instead, the selectors opted to bring in younger players , recalling left-hand batsman Harris Sohail, investing in Sami Aslam, and now Usman Salahuddin and Saad Ali – who scored 957 runs at an average of 68.35 in last year’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.”I am not taking away anything from Fawad, as he has scored a lot of runs in domestic cricket at a great average. When there is a competition, some players get left out, but that doesn’t mean their career ends there,” Inzamam said. “We haven’t ignored him, we have actually given an opportunity to a few others we thought were more suited to English conditions. Last season, we had tough bowling conditions in the QeA, and Saad Ali was a stand-out performer, and that is why he was preferred. I have spoken to Fawad on many occasions and given him the confidence to keep on working hard.”I know people are very critical about his non-selection but we need to see things in perspective. People have expectations and they want to see their team win every game which brings a lot of responsibility on us. I have nothing against any player. We have a responsibility and what is important is we do not fail it. We must select players on merit. I am lucky that most of my picks so far are paying off well, and we now have a bigger pool of players.”Talk of merit invariably raises the uncomfortable topic of Imam-ul-Haq in the team. Imam is Inzamam’s nephew, and his selection for the tour of England raised eyebrows, particularly because he had a slightly worse average than Alam in the 2016-17 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the last season both of them played the competition together. Imam was, however, the third-highest run-scorer that year in the competition, and was picked for the ODI series against Sri Lanka, and ended up scoring a century on debut.”Picking Imam is a tough decision but this is one decision I didn’t take,” Inzamam said. “People might be cynical about this but the head coach [Mickey Arthur], batting coach [Grant Flower] and other selectors made the decision to select Imam. I am the part of the discussion group, but I didn’t say anything about it. The report given by trainers and coaches about him showed a significant improvement in his skill and fitness levels. He was already in the system even before my becoming selector, so associating me shouldn’t be a point of discussion.”

Hankins and Dent see off Glamorgan

Gloucestershire timed their run chase to perfection to see off Glamorgan as George Hankins paraded his 50-over potential

ECB Reporters Network18-May-2018

ScorecardGloucestershire gained an emphatic eight wicket victory against Glamorgan in their opening game in the Royal London Cup, as they easily chased down 265 with 10 balls remaining. Chris Dent and George Hankins, in only his fourth List A game, laid the foundation with a rousing opening partnership of 147 in 25 overs, Dent scoring 80, and Hankins a career-best 85. Benny Howell’s unbeaten half-century then ensured there would be no relapse.Gloucestershire were far superior throughout the day, as their bowlers stuck to their task by taking pace off the ball, and also restricting Glamorgan by allowing them to score only 63 runs, and to lose 6 wickets in the process, in the final ten overs. When Glamorgan bowled, Michael Hogan and Graham Wagg apart, the other bowlers – notably Marchant De Lange – bowled far too short and the result was an avalanche of early boundaries.Glamorgan’ innings had been built around a 98- run partnership between Shaun Marsh and Colin Ingram, after Nick Selman had struck a composed 32, before he nicked Chris Liddle to the wicketkeeper from a ball that probably would have been called a wide.Marsh and Ingram then settled into their productive partnership at five runs an over, before Ingram, leading Glamorgan for the first time in his new role as one day captain, pushed too early at Danny Worrall’s medium pace to give short cover a simple catch.Marsh appeared set for a big innings, before Worrall found some extra bounce and forced the Australian batsman to edge a lifting delivery to the wicketkeeper. Chris Cooke and David Lloyd then added a useful 75 for the fifth wicket, but from 239 for 5, Glamorgan lost their way, losing their last 5 wickets for 26, and were all out for 264 with 2 balls remaining. With Gloucestershire needing to score at 5.3 runs an over, Hankins and Dent set off at a furious pace, with Hankins, a 21-year-old product of Millfield School, striking de Lange for three fours in his second over. Dent supported him well, but the Gloucestershire captain was dropped from a difficult caught and bowled chance to Timm Van Der Gugten, and then from a skier as Cooke and Lloyd left the ball for each other. The opening pair quickly shared a 100- run partnership and such was their domination, that 15 fours were struck in the first 16 overs. Dent was eventually dismissed, when Wagg, after bowling four overs of seam, reverted to spin and his fifth ball was struck to fe Lange on the long on boundary. With 39 needed, Hankins’ excellent innings ended when he was leg before to Andrew Salter’s off spin, but Benny Howell saw Gloucestershire home with an undefeated 68 from 81 balls.
