Mason Crane, the Hampshire legspinner, has become the first overseas cricketer to play for New South Wales in more than 30 years after being handed his debut against South Australia. There was some thought that damp weather in Sydney would hamper his chances of being named in the XI, but on Tuesday morning he was handed his NSW cap by former Australia legspinner Stuart MacGill, who Crane has worked closely with during his stint playing grade cricket for Gordon where he caught the eye of NSW selectors. At the end of a rain-affected first day, Crane had his first Shield wicket. Despite only bowling five overs, he had Tom Cooper caught trying to clear the infield as South Australia stuttered to 5 for 169.His spell in Australia had been arranged through the ECB’s overseas placement scheme with help from Hampshire team-mate Will Smith, a previous Gordon player, and 20-year-old Crane is the first overseas player for NSW since Imran Khan in 1984-85.”Australian State teams don’t pick overseas players lightly, especially New South Wales, as their record shows,” Peter Such, the ECB’s leading spin-bowling coach, said. “So to force his way in through weight of wickets, and also the impression he has made in their practice sessions, is a tribute both to his ability and the hard work he has put in.Speaking to ESPNcricinfo last month, Crane highlighted his time with MacGill – “there can’t be many better blokes to talk about that with” – and said the volume of overs he had bowled had been ideal for him.”I’ve bowled nearly 500 match overs out here, and there’s really no substitute for that,” he said. “I’ll leave here very cricket-fit, and in great rhythm.”Ahead of his NSW debut, Crane had 45 first-class wickets at 40.75.

A century from David Miller and three new-ball wickets from Marchant de Lange overshadowed a quickfire hundred from Titans captain Albie Morkel to help Knights climb their way to fourth place from the bottom, with a resounding bonus-point victory of 111 runs in Kimberley. Both teams now have 14 points each.Chasing 303, Titans were in tatters when de Lange ran through their top order with an opening spell of 5-3-4-3 that left them on 8 for 3 in the seventh over. To add to Titans’ miseries, Farhaan Behardien and Tony de Zorzi were run-out, slipping them further to 22 for 5 in the 11th over. Once David Wiese also fell three overs later, Morkel combined with Shaun von Berg who scored only 29 in their partnership of 120 in just 17.1 overs. The duo took the score past 150 but fell within the space of four overs after Morkel scored a century off 69 balls and was eventually dismissed for 117 off 84 that featured 13 fours and four sixes. Titans lasted another 15 balls and were wrapped up for 191 in 37.2 overs. When Knights were asked to bat, Grant Mokoena retired hurt for 36 after an opening stand of 57 with Rudi Second. Once they were 90 for 2 in the 20th over, Miller, on debut for Knights, and captain Pite van Biljon stitched a dominating partnership of 185 runs in under 26 overs to charge them to 275 with 27 balls left. Miller ended with 104 off 100, his seventh List A hundred with eight fours and two sixes, while Biljon’s 90 off 76 included nine fours and two sixes that helped the lower order post 302 for 8.File photo – JJ Smuts, the Warriors captain, surpassed his previous best of 132 with an unbeaten 173 against Cape Cobras•AFP

JJ Smuts’ unbeaten 173 led Warriors to a 90-run victory over Cape Cobras in Cape Town, despite a brisk century by Richard Levi.In what was their third bonus-point victory, and as many wins from seven matches, Warriors posted 305 for 6 after Smuts strung an opening partnership of 119 runs with Gihahn Cloete, who struck 70 off 75 balls. The two Colins – Ingram and Ackermann – then chipped in with twenties each to help Smuts, the Warriors captain, surpass his previous best of 132 against Dolphins in 2011-12. While it took Smuts 134 balls to bring up his ton, he amassed his next 73 runs in only 30 balls, clobbering nine fours and eight sixes overall to register the third-highest one-day score in South African domestic cricket after Reeza Hendricks’ 181 and Morne van Wyk’s 175*.Cobras’ decision to field found little validation, as only Eddie Leie and Rory Kleinveldt offered any sort of resistance with returns of 4 for 56 and 2 for 48 respectively. Richard Levi, however, provided Cobras’ chase a rapid start, plundering 94 off 53 balls before retiring hurt in the 18th over, his side having made 128 for 2. Cobras’ subsequent loss of four wickets for 32 runs prompted Levi’s return in the 26th over but he ran out of partners and his 70-ball 106 went in vain. No Cobras batsman, barring Levi, scored more than 20 and Ingram and Ayabulela Gqamane returned combined figures of 5 for 78 to skittle Cobras for 215 in 37.3 overs, the last wicket having fallen to the Player-of-the-Match, Smuts.

Arsenal Could Repeat RvP Blinder With £51m-rated Sensation

It is fair to say that it has been a rather impressive start to the window for those at Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta and co having first wrapped up a deal for Chelsea playmaker, Kai Havertz.

The signing of the German international now looks set to be followed by the additions of Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice, with the Gunners hoping to build on last season's encouraging, second-placed finish in the Premier League.

Whether that is the end of the club's business remains to be seen, however, with the north Londoners likely hoping to improve their strength in depth ahead of a return to the Champions League next season, following a six-year absence.

According to reports in France, the Emirates outfit are believed to be interested in signing PSV Eindhoven starlet, Xavi Simons, with the 20-year-old having enjoyed a sparkling debut campaign in the Netherlands last time out.

While Fabrizio Romano has indicated that the youngster's former club, Paris Saint-Germain are hoping to exercise their €6m (£5m) buy option to bring the playmaker back to the Parc des Princes, it remains to be seen if the young Dutchman is open to that return, hence ensuring that Arteta's side still have the opportunity to pounce.

Although it would be a real step up for Simons – who scored 19 goals and registered nine assists in just 34 Eredivisie games last season – to make the move to England, he could well follow in the footsteps of his compatriot, Robin van Persie and prove to be a real star for the Gunners in the years to come.

How good was Van Persie at Arsenal?

Although the now-retired striker somewhat soured his relations with Arsenal supporters after making a controversial move to rivals Manchester United in 2012, prior to that the elegant goal machine had been simply prolific under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger.

arsenal-transfer-arsene-wenger-robin-van-persie

Like Simons, the 6 foot ace had come to wider attention as a result of his form in his native Holland for Feyenoord, notably registering 12 goal involvements in the league during the 2003/04 season, before joining the newly-crowned 'Invincibles' for the following season at the age of just 20.

That reported £3m deal ultimately proved particularly astute as Van Persie eventually blossomed into something of a talisman in his number nine berth, memorably hitting 30 league goals in his final campaign at the club during the 2011/12 season.

All in all, the Rotterdam native plundered 132 goals and 58 assists in just 278 games for the club in all competitions, with it fair to say that Arsenal more than got a return on their initial investment.

The hope will be that the Gunners can enjoy a repeat of that transfer masterclass with the addition of Simons, with the £51m-rated sensation – who can operate all across the forward line or in a number ten role – the kind of player who has that much-needed "X-Factor", according to journalist Antonio Mango.

Also described as "technically special" by Mango, Simons could well be another exciting addition in an already stellar window for Arteta, with the youngster having the pathway ahead of him to try and emulate Van Persie's success in north London.

Rangers star to "finally" leave Ibrox

Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara will "finally leave" Ibrox in the summer with clubs from the Championship and "abroad" offering him a new place to play, claims transfer insider Dean Jones.

Is Glen Kamara leaving Rangers?

The blue side of Glasgow has been a hive of activity so far this summer, with a swath of players both coming to Ibrox and leaving.

Rangers manager Michael Beale.

In total, the club have seen seven players leave Glasgow, and seven come in, with the club spending £3m on Sam Lammers from Atalanta and Cyriel Dessers from Cremonese for £4.5m.

However, the column for outgoings could have another name added to it fairly soon as it was revealed by the Daily Herald that the Teddy Bears have placed a £5m price tag on their Finnish midfielder, Kamara.

The 27-year-old joined the Glaswegian giants from Scottish Championship side Dundee United in January 2019.

The midfield dynamo initially signed a pre-contract with the side, but the two teams eventually agreed upon a fee of only £45k, which, considering the 193 appearances he's made for the Gers, surely has to be one of the best value for money signings in the club's history.

At the moment, Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas have the most concrete links to the player, with Turkish outlet Sozcu reporting that Kamara has requested the club to let him leave for the Istanbul outfit.

Outside of the Turkish giants, TeamTalk have reported that the recently promoted Sheffield United and recently relegated Southampton are both interested in securing the player's signature.

Glasgow Rangers central midfielder Glen Kamara.

What has Dean Jones said about Rangers and Kamara?

Jones spoke about the saga that has surrounded the player for quite some time before highlighting some Championship clubs that have expressed interest in his services.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: "Glen Kamara has been a topic of talk for some time, but it does look like he will finally leave.

"Leeds and Southampton are looking at him, and for clubs like that, in the Championship, he would probably be a great signing.

"He has offers from abroad too though, so it'll be interesting to see what he decides to do."

How good is Glen Kamara?

The Tampere-born "monster", as former manager Steven Gerrard once dubbed him, has proven his ability to those that have watched Scottish football over the last few years, even if he has faded somewhat over the last 18 months.

Despite suffering another injury setback last season and still not quite reaching the heights he did under Gerrard, he still had a reasonably decent campaign in Glasgow, playing 20 games and averaging a rating of 6.79 across his league appearances, according to Sofascore.

He doesn't offer much attacking threat, but his passing is as good as it ever was, with him achieving a pass accuracy of 89% across his 20 league appearances last season.

Perhaps the best measure of his importance can be seen from what former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie said after Kamara's initial reintroduction into the side under Michael Beale:

"He is a good player and Gio did not put him in the team for some reason. He has come back and all of a sudden they are starting to play a bit better."

Unfortunately, he soon fell back to being a regular on the substitute bench for the club, making a transfer away potentially the best option for all involved.

Warner, Rashid give Lions a thrashing

Rashid Khan and David Warner combined to ease Sunrisers Hyderabad to their second win of the season, and send Gujarat Lions crashing to another huge defeat

The Report by Nikhil Kalro09-Apr-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details2:21

Hogg: What was Raina thinking?

Sunrisers Hyderabad dominated all aspects of a T20 game – batting, bowling, fielding and winning a toss – to consign Gujarat Lions to their second rout of the season. Sunrisers cruised to their second comfortable victory, with nine wickets in hand and 27 balls to spare.Lions stuck to the same combination as the first game – four overseas batsmen and five Indian bowlers – and lacked balance and penetration again. With the bat, they could muster just 135, their second-lowest first-innings total. With the ball, they’ve taken just one wicket in two games.Sunrisers, on the other hand, were outstanding in planning and execution. Rashid Khan flummoxed the Lions batsmen with his variations to become the highest wicket-taker of this season’s IPL. Then chasing 136, Moises Henriques struck his second fifty of the season, and David Warner made an unbeaten 45-ball 76, going past 1000 IPL runs at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium and 7000 runs in T20 cricket. The IPL’s most significant trend
Sunrisers captain Warner was clear at the toss. He knew the surface would be slower in the afternoon and his spinners would be useful against Lions’ four overseas stars. After putting Lions in to bat – the fifth time in six games a team has chosen to chase this season – Warner started with left-arm spinner Bipul Sharma. The pitch played pretty much as expected: slow, low, and timing spinners wasn’t easy. Sunrisers’ spinners – Rashid and Bipul – returned combined figures of 8-0-43-3 leaving the Lions to play catch-up thereafter.Moises Henriques scored his second half-century of the season•BCCI

Legspin winning T20sPicking Rashid’s variations from his stock ball has been one of the harder tasks in Associate cricket. That is why he is regularly employed towards the end overs in T20Is for Afghanistan. In just two games, Rashid has shown discerning legspin isn’t simple for the elite either.Batsmen often look for a cross-batted option against spin they aren’t able to read. That seemed the case when Brendon McCullum chose to sweep in Rashid’s first over. He missed the googly and was struck in front of the wicket. Aaron Finch and Suresh Raina were deceived too: Finch by a googly and Raina by a regulation legbreak. Both batsmen missed the ball by a considerable distance, an indicator that they failed to pick Rashid. It was the first time a bowler took three lbws in an IPL game. Two of the best legspinners in the world currently, Rashid and Imran Tahir, both attack the stumps – a legbreak to a left-hander and a googly to a right-hander – to new batsmen. It has worked, and not just in the IPL.Not timing a T20 chaseSometimes, a higher total to chase frees up a batting team. Pacing an innings while chasing a relatively small total can also be fraught with danger because of the unpredictability of the end overs. Warner, however, didn’t change his normal approach to Sunrisers’ 136 target. With two left-handers opening for Sunrisers, Suresh Raina bowled the first over. He had bowled only 30 balls in the Powerplay and conceded 32 runs prior to this game. His first delivery was flat and straight, skidding on with the arm. Warner gave himself room and cut to point off middle stump. While that was a risky stroke, it showed Raina his best delivery could be taken for runs. That risk paid off in the next over, when Raina was forced to change his length. Warner used his feet against Raina’s flight to hit a straight six, and then used the depth of the crease to pull for six off a shorter delivery. He had raced away to 32 off 17 balls in the Powerplay, and Sunrisers were 59 for 1. By then, the game was effectively won.

Liverpool Plot Deal For £103m "Exceptional Talent"

Liverpool are continuing their midfield rebuild this summer with a number of targets still being looked at ahead of next season, and now a reliable source has revealed another potential incoming.

What's the latest on Liverpool's interest in Florentino Luis?

According to Sky Sports senior reporter Melissa Reddy, Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis is one of many targets the Merseysiders have identified to replace Fabinho this summer.

Reddy revealed on Twitter: "Liverpool had been assessing longer-term candidates to replace Fabinho. Profile might shift as they'll require an immediate starter. Among the names mooted have been Sofyan Amrabat, Ryan Gravenberch, Kalvin Phillips and Romeo Lavia…

"Lavia and Gravenberch have long been considered by LFC (regardless of current situation), with their reps spoken to. Other players they've looked at: Nicolo Barella, Khephren Thuram, Florentino Luis, Joao Palhinha, Teun Koopmeiners… They do love a surprise, stealth signing."

Who is Florentino Luis?

The Reds are seeking out more new additions for the centre of the pitch after it was confirmed this weekend that Fabinho is expected to make a £40m move to the Saudi Pro League to join Al-Ittihad.

Whilst it won't be easy to replace the Brazilian mainstay's impact at Anfield, it presents an opportunity for Jurgen Klopp to complete a full rebuild of the midfield personnel with Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai already acquired for the next generation of success.

As a result, the signing of Luis could be a great piece of business for Liverpool and the German coach could repeat his Darwin Nunez masterclass by snapping up another youthful prospect from Portugal.

benfica-florentino-luis-premier-league-liverpool-transfers

The 23-year-old is already showing glimpses of his strength and dominance in the deep-lying midfield role, ranking in the top 15% of his positional peers across the Men's Next Eight Leagues for aerial duels won, interceptions, tackles, progressive passes and pass completion, as per FBref.

Not only that, when comparing the talented midfielder's output with Fabinho's last season, Luis comfortably outperformed his Liverpool counterpart in several key defensive attributes including pass completion (89.7% v 88.3%), percentage of dribblers tackled (69.7% v 38.7%), successful take-ons (59.1% v 46.7%) and aerial duels won (61% v 58.8%).

The Portugal youth international has been the recipient of high praise over his career so far, with his former coach Joao Tralhao comparing Luis to Manchester United's Casemiro:

"[He has] an exceptional talent and physical qualities totally in line with his footballing qualities. [He] has a very similar profile to Casemiro. From very early on, we realised that Florentino was on his way to becoming an elite player."

Luis has a reported release clause of €120m (£103m), but Liverpool will be hoping that their relationship with Benfica will help to agree a deal much less than the contractual obligation, after working with the Portuguese giants recently to secure their record-breaking deal for Nunez last summer.

The latter man's debut campaign in England was arguably not plain-sailing – as he started just 19 league games and missed 20 big chances in the top flight – although the Uruguayan hotshot did still showcase his undoubted talent, having scored 15 times in all competitions to finish behind only Mo Salah in the scoring charts.

The 24-year-old – who had scored 34 goals the year prior in Portugal – will be hoping to truly catch fire next season, although if his stunning, instinctive flick against Real Madrid is anything to go by, then Klopp certainly has a real player on his hands.

With that being said, if the Reds can seal the deal for Luis there is no doubt that he would be a worthy successor to Fabinho at Anfield next season, while he could also follow in Nunez's footsteps by being another exciting talent to have flourished after leaving Lisbon for Liverpool.
