Referee Don Robertson may have made a big mistake after not handing Borna Barisic a second yellow card for diving against Celtic in the Scottish Cup.

What’s the latest on Borna Barisic and Celtic?

Meeting at the semi-final stage on Sunday afternoon, the Bhoys came up against Old Firm rivals Rangers at Hampden Park.

Looking to retain their status as the competition’s holders, Michael Beale’s side started with intensity, but Celtic soon began to take control, and by half-time, the Hoops were ahead.

It was a mix-up at the back from Rangers as their defensive line fell asleep, allowing Daizen Maeda to whip in a superb cross to set up Jota for the opener.

However, before the first half was up, Ange Postecoglou and co had a good shout for a red card when Barisic threw himself to the ground to try and win a penalty.

As this footage shows, the 30-year-old defender hits the deck inside the box despite there being no contact on him.

Did Barisic dive against Celtic?

Considering Barisic was already on a yellow card after making a poor challenge, he certainly was at risk of being sent off had referee Robertson viewed it as simulation.

When getting his first card, former Rangers winger Neil McCann told BBC Sportsound: “Barisic has got a problem now because he has a booking. He’s got a lot of this game left to make sure his tackling and his positioning is right.”

Ironically, though, Barisic was up at the other end with the ball at his feet attacking when he made the poor decision to go to ground and try to win the penalty. On another day, he could have easily been shown a red card for a second bookable offence.

In fact, with another referee, the Croatian defender could have received his marching orders. As it happens, Willie Collum picked up an injury during his warm-up at Hampden Park and so had to pull out of the game. Had he been in charge of the Old Firm instead of Robertson as was originally intended, perhaps we would have seen a second yellow in that moment.

But with VAR not able to intervene in any possible yellow-card decisions, we feel Barisic certainly got away with one here.

On May 12, 2004, James Hildreth came out to bat against Shoaib Akhtar in a County Championship match. Akhtar was one of the two quickest bowlers in the world, consistently exceeding 90mph. Hildreth was a slightly built 19-year-old playing the second first-class game of his career.He promptly scored 101 and 72. It was the performance of a singular talent, and marked Hildreth out as a coming man in English cricket. But, somehow, he has remained there ever since. There has been much to laud in Hildreth’s batting: he is a player of languid class, who has one of the most exquisite cover drives in the land. He has scored runs, and lots of them: 14,039 in first-class cricket, to be exact. These have never, though, been enough to entice the England selectors.Hildreth has a legitimate claim to being the pre-eminent batsman of his generation never to win international selection: his first-class average of 44.71 is better than any other Englishman established on the county circuit not to win a cap.But when Hildreth has been spoken about, the discussion is less of the cricketer than the caricature. He has been called artful but flaky, a harvester only on Taunton’s benign tracks, and ropey against the short ball. There have even been whispers that he is a man who prefers the easy life in Taunton to the strains that would come with playing for England.It is a claim that Hildreth could not refute more strongly. “I get up every day desperate to play for England,” he said after helping secure a draw for Somerset at Lord’s. “The aspiration will always be there. That’s what gets me out of bed in the morning.”Neither does he think the other charges against him are fair. In particular, Hildreth is bemused by the suggestion, recycled for years, that he is vulnerable to the short ball. “I find that quite strange. I’ve never experienced that during an innings or even at the beginning of an innings. I’ve always felt comfortable with the short ball, it’s never been a particular issue. Yet Hildreth has four centuries at Trent Bridge, a riposte to those who suggest he is vulnerable to the moving ball.Somehow Hildreth’s moment has never quite come. After a stellar 2010, when he scored seven first-class centuries, he had a fine winter captaining the England Lions, and seemed primed for Test selection. But he averaged just under 40 in the County Championship in 2011: hardly a bad season but enough for the England selectors to ignore him, consigning Hildreth to sumptuous run-making in the shires instead.”I’ve only been consistent this year and the year before – I’ve been a bit up and down previous to that,” he said, in blunt assessment of a 14-year career.It has taken Hildreth long, perhaps too long, to blossom in the way so many hoped and expected. But blossom he now has. Since the start of last summer, Hildreth has made 2184 runs at 60.67 apiece. To see him batting at Lord’s was to see a man in complete control of his game, unperturbed by all bowling and at ease with himself.”I’m just comfortable. No hype, nothing major, just comfortable with what I’m doing,” he said. “I’ve got to the stage where I think it’s an effective technique and if I can have trust in that there’s no reasons why I can’t consistently score runs.” In years gone past, Hildreth admitted he had been “too desperate to score runs and worried about external stuff going on, like targets, rather than trusting my method.”Hildreth remains convince that method could work in Test cricket too. “I’ve always felt that. All I can do is wait, score my runs and keep knocking on the door. Hopefully I’ll get a call-up.”Here there was plenty of Hildreth’s style, encapsulated in two silken off drives from consecutive balls off Ollie Rayner. He advanced balletically to the first ball and stayed in his crease to the second, but the result was the same: a sweet ping emanating from his bat while the ball raced up the Lord’s slope and over the boundary rope.But mostly this was an innings that defied the lazy Hildreth caricature. For Somerset, it needed to. A game that had seemed to be sleepwalking to a draw was imbued with life as Tim Murtagh snared both openers with the new ball. Rayner induced Rogers to edge behind soon afterwards and, just when Hildreth and Peter Trego seemed to have eradicated all danger, Rayner had Trego caught at square leg and claimed Lewis Gregory first ball, poking to slip.Rayner is an orthodox offspinner who embraces his limitations, but there was nothing humdrum about the delivery that accounted for Ryan Davies two overs later. The ball spun viciously through his gate, as he attempted an extravagant flick to the legside, and uprooted his leg stump. Rayner screamed with joy in the belief that he had ripped open the match.Not on this occasion, not with Hildreth in this form. The only shame was that bad light curtailed his innings, depriving him of a first century away from Taunton since the end of 2013.Marcus Trescothick’s fantastic early season form has led to idle talk in the west country that he could break Harold Gimblett’s record for most first-class runs for Somerset, of which he is now just under 4000 runs shy. But he is not the only one who could do it: another 4000 runs back, and nine years Trescothick’s junior, lurks Hildreth.

Ruben Neves could end up joining Man United if a potential transfer to Barcelona collapses, as reported by Sport via Sport Witness.

What is the latest on Ruben Neves to Man United?

The Wolves midfielder has been at Molineux since helping take them out of the Championship and into the Premier League back in the 2017/18 campaign. He set the second tier alight with his dominating displays from midfield and his penchant for long-range goals and has been a mainstay in the club's side ever since.

Having gone from strength-to-strength in the top flight and now racked up over 216 league showings for Wolves, he has proven to be a wanted man amongst other top tier sides over the last few seasons. Last summer for example, both Man United and Liverpool expressed an interest in trying to snap up the player.

However, Neves stayed with his current team for the duration of this campaign and has once more proven important with six goals and one assist in 32 league outings. Now though, the midfielder could finally be set to move on with his Wolves deal expiring next summer. His club won't want to let him leave for nothing and that means they could cash in this summer.

A fresh report from Sport via Sport Witness suggests that he will indeed end his time with Wolves but that he has his heart set on a move to Spain and La Liga, with Barcelona the front-runners to snap up the 26-year-old. However, the deal that would send him to the Camp Nou involved a trade for Ansu Fati and with the Barca man unwilling to swap teams, it has stalled negotiations according to this source.

It means that a La Liga switch might not happen for Neves after all – and if that is the case, Man United would step in as the next available club, with the player set on departing Molineux.

Would Ruben Neves be a good Man United signing?

The midfielder has lit up the Premier League ever since he helped drag Wolves back into the top flight and he has shown no signs of slowing down either.

This year, despite his club toiling at the wrong end of the division, he has still regularly put in a shift and emerged as the one bright spot in what has been a lacklustre campaign for the team. This has been showcased by his 6.99 WhoScored rating in the Premier League – a better score than any other player at Molineux this season.

It comes as no surprise though, with even his teammates heaping the praise on Neves. Hugo Bueno labelled the midfielder as an "incredible player" and admitted he is a "key player" to the side.

Neves then could certainly slot into a top-level club considering that he continues to impress and shine above the rest at Wolves. Former India captain Anil Kumble has been appointed coach of the national side for one year, the BCCI announced on Thursday. His first assignment will be India’s four-Test tour of the West Indies.The question of who would take over as India coach has been a talking point since Ravi Shastri’s tenure as team director ended after the World T20. Some of the uncertainty was addressed when Anurag Thakur, after his appointment as BCCI president, said the vacancy would be filled before the Tests in the Caribbean.The BCCI put out an advertisement for a new coach in the first week of June and received 57 applications, including Kumble’s. However, it appears he was not among the 21 names shortlisted by the BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke’s office. The Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, assigned to pick India’s next coach asked for Kumble’s name to be included, at which point he became an instant favourite.The committee interviewed Kumble and a handful of other candidates in Kolkata on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, they made their recommendations to the BCCI. Thakur, along with Shirke, made the final call.”The CAC recommended a few names to the BCCI. After discussions with various stakeholders, we have taken the final call that for next one year Anil Kumble will be the head coach.” Thakur said at a media briefing in Dharamsala. He added the support staff would be appointed after consulting with Kumble.Kumble applying for the job was a surprise to many in the BCCI, considering he has not coached a cricket team before. The BCCI had preferred their candidates to have had that experience, but his pedigree as a player and two stints as mentor in the IPL worked in Kumble’s favour.The BCCI offered Kumble a one-year term to help him acclimatise to the job better and to give themselves the cushion to reassess if needed.”As for the one-year period, Kumble is now transforming himself from being a great on the cricketing field to probably becoming a great coach that we expect him to be. That transition has to be smooth. This is professional appointment. All professional appointments try to cover all bases. Therefore that is the reason we want to be able to be in a position to review our options should there be any need. I am confident that we will not have that need to address that need. That is the exact reason behind the one-year appointment.”A senior official privy to the selection process said a long-term contract was not a viable option considering the lengthy interval between now and the next World Cup in 2019. But he felt Kumble was in “the driver’s seat” to prove his credentials.”We have 13 Tests at home and then there is the Champions Trophy next year,” the insider said. “He is now in the driver’s seat. We have given him the keys and he has to now prove himself.”Kumble’s lack of experience is made up for by his standing as a player and captain in an 18-year-long international career. He finished as India’s highest wicket-taker in Tests, and the third-highest overall, with 619 wickets, including a best of 10 for 74 against Pakistan in Delhi in 1999.After being appointed Test captain in November 2007, he led India in 14 matches, winning three, losing five and drawing six, until his retirement a year later. Among his notable victories as captain was the Perth Test in January 2008, which was played after the controversial Sydney Test where, among other issues, India faced allegations of racism from the Australia side.Kumble is the first Indian to be appointed full-time India coach since Kapil Dev resigned in September 2000.According to Shirke, there were four overseas candidates who had made the shortlist of 21, including Tom Moody and Andy Moles, who, it is understood, were among those interviewed by the in Kolkata.”It’s not about Indian or foreign coach,” Thakur said. “There was no such limitation that we have to look for only Indian coach. So you take feedback not only from one sector, you take feedback from all stakeholders. He was elected president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association in November 2010, served as chairman of the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore and also headed the BCCI’s technical committee from 2012 to 2015.

Celtic duo Callum McGregor and Carl Starfelt have been slammed for their displays as the Hoops fell to a 3-0 defeat at Ibrox in the Old Firm derby.

With the visitors already trailing 2-0, the defender and midfielder were caught out following a calamitous giveaway, and this allowed Fashion Sakala to net the third goal for Rangers.

It was a poor mistake from both players, and sealed their fate on the day as the Champions saw their 28-match unbeaten run come to an end.

Sky Sports commentator Andy Walker singled out both players for giving an easy goal to the hosts, who enjoyed a dominant victory against a rotated Celtic side.

"Credit to the goalscorer, but my word, what a mess from McGregor and Starfelt. It's a gift that secures the win for Rangers," he stated on commentary.

What next for Celtic?

Despite putting in a thoroughly unimpressive performance at the home of their rivals, Celtic will likely not be too dismayed, given that they came into the game with the title secured, and made a number of changes to the lineup.

Starfelt has been a regular starter despite suffering from injuries earlier on in the season, and despite his poor display, will still likely keep his place going forward.

McGregor and Starfelt were both given 6.2 ratings by SofaScore given their role in the third goal, and neither player will have been happy with their showings on the day.

McGregor won just one of his five duels and lost possession five times, whilst Starfelt lost the ball nine times in a difficult afternoon.

The pair both attempted to seize on a loose ball in the Celtic half, and both lost out amidst confusion which allowed Sakala to pounce and eventually finish for the goal.

Celtic have now won the Premiership with just two defeats under their belt at this stage, and with the Scottish Cup final coming up, Ange Postecoglou elected to rotate his squad, with the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda on the bench.

It was a decision that ultimately backfired, but if Celtic do secure victory against Inverness in June, they will secure a dominant domestic treble, having beaten Rangers in the Scottish League Cup final and the FA Cup semi-final.

There has been speculation linking Postecoglou with a move to England, but if he stays at Celtic Park, it seems likely that another season of glory will await the Hoops next season.

Referee Jarred Gillett may have made a notable error by not spotting a foul on Harry Kane shortly before Tottenham Hotspur conceded in their recent loss.

It was an afternoon to forget at home for Spurs on Saturday as they were soundly beaten by Brentford in the Premier League.

Things had started so well, however, with star man Kane firing in a brilliant freekick after just eight minutes which was enough to see them lead at halftime.

But the Bees were by far the better team in the second 45 and they made the dominance count as they netted twice through Bryan Mbeumo before he also set up Yoane Wissa to make it 3-1 on the day.

The crucial goal of the day was Brentford’s second but it came in controversial fashion as Kane appeared to be fouled by Aaron Hickey before the defender then slipped in Mbeumo to score only seconds later.

Was Kane fouled by Hickey?

As this footage from BBC’s Match of the Day shows, Kane gets to the ball first before Hickey bumps into him on the halfway line and turns over possession despite not making any contact with the ball.

It’s the sort of challenge that tends to result in a foul being given more often than not but Gillett opted to play on and VAR must have felt it wasn’t a clear or obvious mistake and so they decided not to intervene either.

The Spurs players certainly weren’t happy with Jonathan Pearce on the BBC commentary noting: Tottenham are surrounding the referee, they think that’s a foul on Kane.”
