Financial Issues To Block £1.1m-p/w Star’s Barcelona Deal

Journalist Sid Lowe has revealed that Barcelona's current financial situation means that as things stand, they would not be able to re-sign Lionel Messi this summer.

What's going on with Messi and Barcelona?

The 35-year-old is out of contract at Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season, and recent reports have indicated that he is keen to re-join Barcelona, with whom he had many successful years.

Messi originally departed Camp Nou in 2021 following financial issues which meant his contract could not be renewed, and he subsequently moved to PSG.

He could move on a free transfer this summer, but with reported wages of just under £1.1m-per-week, it would be a tall order for Barcelona to reduce their already large wage budget to accommodate him.

Speaking on ESPN FC, Lowe claimed that Barcelona would either have to activate more economic levers – which saw them spend heavily last summer – or reduce their wage bill massively to have any chance of bringing their greatest-ever player back.

He said: "You'd be in a position where you wouldn't be paying a transfer fee for him, but it would depend on the size of the salary.

"But right now, no, they don't have the margin for it. So that asks all sorts of questions: where's the money coming from – sales of players, or maybe we go back and we discover a few more levers that can be pulled?"

Should Barcelona move on from Messi?

Barcelona are in a tough situation, as there could be a strong temptation to bring back arguably the greatest player of all time, who is still capable of performing at a high level as shown in Ligue 1, but the deal as a whole does not make a lot of sense in the long run.

Sales appear to be necessary to accomodate an ageing player, and after a number of transfer windows in which younger players such as Raphinha, Ferran Torres, Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde arrived – while Pedri, Gavi and Alejandro Balde were given more prominent roles – disrupting the squad to shoehorn Messi into the team may not suit Xavi's project.

Xavi's former boss Pep Guardiola once described Messi as "unstoppable", and whilst he may still have a lot to offer in front of goal, his supposed diminished impact on games may yet hinder Barcelona.

Indeed, he was blamed for PSG's Champions League exit against Bayern Munich, perhaps signalling that his impact on games at the most elite level is not what it used to be having scored goals and won trophies for fun at Barcelona, and given the financial gymnastics the club will have to go through to bring him back, there is a fair argument to suggest that they should move on without him.

Spurs eye impressive Nagelsmann alternative

Tottenham Hotspur have identified an ‘impressive’ Julian Nagelsmann alternative in Feyenoord boss Arne Slot, according to The Times.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Conte replacement…

It is believed that Spurs, after manager Antonio Conte’s outburst last weekend, are on the lookout for a new head coach with many candidates becoming linked over the past fortnight.

Chairman Daniel Levy and sporting director Fabio Paratici are believed to have drawn a shortlist of bosses to succeed the 53-year-old, ranging from Mauricio Pochettino to more left-field ideas.

Roberto De Zerbi, Luis Enrique, Marco Silva and Thomas Frank have been mentioned by Sky, meanwhile the likes of Oliver Glasner and Maurizio Sarri are apparently of interest as well.

There has also been talk of Ryan Mason taking interim charge until the end of this Premier League campaign as Levy and co work in the background to hire a permanent replacement for next season.

After being fired by Bayern Munich, perhaps the most sensational name to be linked with Spurs is Julian Naglesmann given his newly-found availability.

The Latest: Tottenham identify Slot…

As per The Times, there has been another development in Spurs’ search for a new boss, as the north London club identify Feyenoord boss Slot as a potential alternative to Nagelsmann.

The reliable news outlet claims Slot, who is currently chasing an Eredivisie title in the Netherlands, has made his way on to Levy’s managerial shortlist as a new target comes to light.

The 44-year-old is joined by Pochettino and Sporting boss Ruben Amorim but it is believed that Spurs wish to seek talks with Nagelsmann.

The Verdict: Good candidate…

Slot is a name who was recently courted heavily by another club in England – Leeds United.

The Whites attempted to hire him as a replacement for Jesse Marsch but were ultimately rejected in their advances, eventually being forced to turn to Javi Gracia.

Their loss could be Tottenham’s gain if they can’t get their hands on Nagelsmann, Pochettino or any of the other big name candidates.

Slot has catapulted Feyenoord into title contention across the continent – amassing quite the reputation with Dutch football experts like Karan Tejwani calling him the most impressive manager in his country right now.

Tejwani said:

“A league title would be a huge achievement for Arne Slot’s CV. The most impressive manager in the Netherlands at the minute. Conference League final last year, top of the Eredivisie this year and still in the Europa League. Keen to see how his career shapes up.”

Slot apparently also has loose links to Tottenham through ex-Spurs manager Martin Jol, with the pair sharing the same agent, Rafaela Pimenta.

West Ham United Could Find Tevez 2.0 In 17 y/o "Jewel"

West Ham United have reportedly made contact with Velez Sarsfield over a possible deal for 17-year-old wonderkid Gianluca Prestianni and the Argentine could prove to be the Hammers' next Carlos Tevez.

Could West Ham sign Prestianni?

According to Tutto Mercato Web, West Ham have been in contact with the Argentinian side about a deal for the teenage forward but could struggle to complete a move because of their current predicament in the Premier League.

David Moyes' side find themselves 18th in the top flight after some woeful recent performances, and relegation to the Championship would no doubt prove disastrous after their recent successes at the London Stadium.

Prestianni reportedly has a release clause of just €12m (£10.5m) so wouldn't be an expensive option for the Hammers this summer, although Benfica and Sevilla are also seemingly keen on a deal and have already offered a fee with the hope of securing a deal for the young talent.

Is Prestianni the next Tevez?

Such is the 17-year-old's reputation that Roberto Mancini is already trying to call him up for the Italian national side, for whom he also has citizenship, which suggests that his market value will only rise further if he can feature for the Azzurri's first team.

Prestianni's one goal came in a 4-0 win earlier this month, when he kept his composure to brilliantly find the net, which saw him dubbed a "jewel" by Argentine journalist Fabian Godoy.

The teenager, who is capable of playing on either flank, has scored once and assisted once in his first ten appearances for Velez Sarsfield and was recently named on the NXGN list of the top 50 wonderkids in the world, where he was likened to the legendary Lionel Messi.

They also claim he has attracted interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, which suggest that if he were to arrive at the London Stadium this summer, it would be a coup on par with the Hammers' signing of Tevez back in 2006.

The striker had impressed at the World Cup and attracted interest from some of the Premier League's top teams but would join alongside Javier Mascherano in a controversial summer deal, which later saw the Hammers fined £5.5m.

However, the fine was almost certainly worth the money when you consider the impact that Tevez had in his brief time in east London, as he contributed seven goals and three assists, including the winner on the final day as West Ham won 1-0 against champions Manchester United to retain their Premier League status.

He would move to Old Trafford that summer but left a West Ham hero, so the idea of signing another exciting young Argentine talent is surely a mouthwatering prospect for Hammers fans.

Liverpool interested in signing Antonio Silva this summer

Liverpool are interested in signing highly-rated Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh rumour.

How is Silva doing this season?

The 19-year-old is arguably one of Portuguese football's hottest properties right now, already becoming an influential part of a Benfica team preparing to face Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals. He has started 22 Primeira Liga matches this season, enjoying a 91.7% pass completion rate, as well as starting all eight European fixtures in 2022/23 to date.

Silva could even be viewed as one of the leading young centre-backs in the game currently, and while his current contract doesn't expire until the summer of 2027, Benfica could find it difficult to keep hold of him at the end of the season.

Liverpool could be looking to sign a new central defender this summer, with doubts surrounding the long-term worth of both Joel Matip and Joe Gomez. The former is out of contract in 2024, meaning this year is the last chance to receive a fee for him, while the latter's performances have often been poor this season.

Now, a new update suggests that Silva could be man to come in and enhance Jurgen Klopp's defensive options.

Benfica defender Antonio Silva.

Could Liverpool snap up defender?

According to Calciomercato, Liverpool are keen on acquiring the teenager's signature at the end of the season, even though he has a release clause of €100m (£87.9m) which may have to be met. That sums up how highly thought of Silva is at Benfica, though, with the club only willing to part ways if a huge offer arrives.

While his value is clearly great, he could end up being worth every penny over time, possibly being viewed as Virgil van Dijk's long-term successor and Ibrahima Konate's eventual partner at centre-back. His aforementioned pass completion rate sums up his quality on the ball, but he also mucks in defensively when needed, averaging 3.8 clearances per match in the Champions League this season.

Silva has been hailed as "incredible" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, such has been the impressive nature of his season to date, and the fact that he is only 19 means that he still has so much improving to do. If Liverpool brought him as competition for Van Dijk and Konate, immediately leaping above Matip and Gomez in the pecking order, it should immediately make the Reds more formidable defensively next season.

Newcastle United Hold Concrete Interest In £25k-p/w Star

Newcastle United hold concrete interest in signing Watford striker Joao Pedro this summer, according to a recent report from Football Insider.

Will Newcastle sign a striker this summer?

Since returning from injury, Alexander Isak has hit a rich vein of form for Newcastle, scoring five goals in his last five Premier League games, though Eddie Howe is still running the rule over new strikers for the summer transfer window.

Marcus Thuram is one target for the Magpies, and they have recently been handed a boost in the race for his signature, as the Borussia Monchengladbach man is said to have rejected a contract offer from Inter Milan.

Goncalo Ramos has also been linked with a move to St James' Park – however, it has now been reported that any potential suitor will now need to fork out €120m (£105m) in order to win the race for the Benfica forward.

There are more affordable options available, however, with Football Insider claiming Newcastle have a concrete interest in signing Watford striker Pedro, who they have tried to sign before.

The Magpies had a £30m offer rejected for the 21-year-old last summer, but they are still said to be keen, and have been closely monitoring him throughout the current campaign.

The starlet is regarded as a top talent, with the versatility required to play in a number of different roles at the top level, and another bid appears to be on the cards this summer.

Would Joao Pedro be a good signing for Newcastle?

After a slow start to life in English football, scoring just three goals in 28 Premier League games during the 2021-22 campaign, the Brazilian is starting to find his feet, albeit in the second tier, emerging as a vital player for Watford.

The marksman is the Hornets' top scorer in all competitions, having scored ten goals so far this season, also weighing in with four assists, which indicates he could be ready to make the step up to the top flight.

Watford's Joao Pedro celebrates scoring their second goal

Football Scout Jacek Kulig seemingly echoes that view, given that he described the £25k-per-week forward as "one of the Championship's best players" earlier this season, also lauding him as "elegant & skilful".

Over the past year, the attacker ranks in the 99th percentile for successful take-ons per 90, when compared to his positional peers at a similar level, while he also places in the 92nd for aerials won, showcasing his dominance in the air.

It may be difficult for Pedro to immediately break into the Newcastle starting XI given Isak's recent performances; however, he is still very young and could go on to be an important player in a few years' time.

Man Utd Eye Summer Move For £60m "Ox"

Manchester United are believed to be interested in making a move for Fulham sensation, Joao Palhinha this summer, with manager Erik ten Hag seemingly keen to bolster his midfield ranks ahead of next season.

What's the latest on Palhinha to Man United?

According to The Sun, the Red Devils are said to be 'monitoring' the 27-year-old ahead of the upcoming window, with it looking as if the Carabao Cup winners will 'make their move' once the market re-opens.

The report suggests that the former Sporting CP ace – who only arrived at Craven Cottage on a £17m deal last summer – could fetch as much as £60m if he was to depart in the near future, with Marco Silva's side having already identified a potential replacement for the Portugal international in the form of Porto's Mateus Uribe.

It would appear that Palhinha has been something of a long-term target for those at the Theatre of Dreams, with reports early last year having suggested that United were keeping tabs on the 20-cap menace.

Would Palhinha be a good fit for Man United?

While the addition of the 6 foot 3 titan would arguably not be the playmaking, Frenkie de Jong-esque signing that Ten Hag may be craving, it would certainly add some further steel to a midfield department that has only recently been strengthened by the £70m addition of Casemiro from Real Madrid last summer.

To have the potential to partner the latter man alongside Palhinha on occasion is truly mouthwatering indeed, with the Old Trafford outfit set to have a simply menacing and destructive duo on their hands in front of the back four.

In the case of the Cottagers' rock, the £50k-per-week monster has arguably been "one of the signings of the season", according to Sky Sports reporter Jamie Weir, having been a real standout presence at the heart of the midfield in west London throughout the current campaign.

Hailed as being as "strong as an ox" by Weir, the towering brute currently ranks first in the division for tackles made (105) as a marker of his ball-winning prowess, memorably making nine tackles and winning 12 duels in total when taking on Ten Hag's men in the Premier League back in November.

Fulham's Joao Palhinha

That class was again evident when the two sides met again in the FA Cup prior to the international break, with Palhinha winning nine of his 13 total duels, while also showcasing his quality in possession after completing three of his four attempted dribbles.

To have such an all-rounder alongside Casemiro would certainly offer the top-four hopefuls real solidity, with the Brazil international – who has been hailed as the "cement" in the side by Ten Hag – also a ferocious presence in the centre of the park after averaging 3.1 tackles per game this season in the league, a record only slightly lower than that of Palhinha (four tackles per game).

That partnership would also potentially allow the current United man to offer more in a creative sense having thus far created five big chances and averaged 0.9 key passes per game, with Palhinha – who has created zero big chances and averages just 0.2 key passes per game – providing more of a defensive shield.

Whether or not the deal does come to pass, it would certainly be of intrigue to see Ten Hag put together a midfield pairing that few teams in the league would relish coming up against.

Moyes Must Unleash West Ham’s Unbelievable Star v Liverpool

West Ham will face Liverpool in the Premier League on Wednesday evening, just three days after they brilliantly dispatched Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

The Irons coasted to a simple and resounding 4-0 victory over their relegation rivals to create a six-point gap between themselves and the relegation zone.

The final goal of that encounter was courtesy of Pablo Fornals, who was introduced after 65 minutes and scored just seven minutes later, thanks to a spell-binding scorpion kick, sealing the joint-highest domestic win of David Moyes’ season.

It may be worth a shout to reintegrate the Spaniard back into the starting line up whilst he is riding the crest of this footballing wave.

Should Moyes start Fornals against vs Liverpool?

The 27-year-old was overjoyed with his second Premier League goal of the campaign, which Troy Deeney described as “unbelievable” on Match of the Day.

The playmaker said: "When you have a chance like that, you just need a bit of luck – the ball bounced, the 'keeper took a step to the other side and it went in. Everything was good in that moment, so thank God for that.

“Not having so many minutes, I’m trying to improve my finishing, so I was really happy and really lucky to score that beautiful goal.”

Pablo-Fornals-scorpion-kick

It has been a difficult season for the £65k-per-week man, who has only started 12 Premier League games, but this magical moment proved he is still supremely capable of moments of uncoachable brilliance.

When Liverpool last visited the London Stadium in November 2021, the Hammers secured a stunning 3-2 victory, and Fornals was ruthlessly efficient.

As per Sofascore, in 54 touches, he recorded two key passes, one accurate long ball, a 100% dribble success rate, as well as scoring his side’s second goal of the affair.

Although he has endured a far quieter campaign, it would be illogical to forget his offensive acumen that has been regularly portrayed since he arrived in England four years ago.

Last term, the former Villarreal ace registered the highest number of key passes per 90 (1.3) of the squad, to underline his undeniable importance and unrelenting ability to link attacking sequences.

Fornals’ inclusion ahead of Said Benrhama could be the move to throw off Jurgen Klopp, as the six-cap international possesses quality in abundance to expose the defensive fragility of Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The £13m-rated man could also be a key source of support for the Hammers backline as he ranks in the top 13% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for tackles per 90, and the top 7% for interceptions, as per FBref.

The "unbelievable" Spaniard – as per the Independent's Karl Matchett – could emerge as a difference maker in a clash where three points would nearly ensure survival for the Irons.

Tottenham Hotspur Linked With "Extraordinary" 64 y/o Manager

Tottenham Hotspur could look at appointing Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri as their new manager, according to recent reports from Italy.

What's the latest Tottenham manager news?

The Telegraph have reported Tottenham have compiled a four-man shortlist of managers, with Julian Nagelsmann said to be their top target, however they face a potential stumbling block, as the compensation may be too expensive.

If Spurs are unable to bring in the German, they could look at appointing Fulham boss Marco Silva, with Football Insider recently detailing the Cottagers are set for contract talks for the 45-year-old, in order to prevent an approach from the north London club.

Journalist Dean Jones has reported the Lilywhites are still interested in Burnley's Vincent Kompany, while the likes of Brendan Rodgers, Thomas Frank and Oliver Glasner could also be considered, as per a report from 90min.

It is still anyone's guess as to who will take over at Tottenham this summer, and there has been a surprise name thrown into the mix by Italian outlet Il Messaggero, as relayed by Citta Celeste (via Sport Witness).

Spurs could reportedly make a move for Sarri, who is said to be attracting the interest of a number of Premier League clubs, and strangely he has also been linked with a move to Newcastle United, who don't look like they'll need a replacement for Eddie Howe any time soon.

The report speculates that a move to Tottenham makes the most sense of the name-checked suitors, but Sarri has recently rejected a big-money move to manage in the United Arab Emirates, indicating he is pretty happy at Lazio.

Should Tottenham go for Maurizio Sarri?

It seems unlikely that Daniel Levy would approach the Italian, although he has done a very good job as manager of Lazio this season, with his side currently sitting second in the Serie A standings.

Arsenal midfielder Jorginho has previously hailed the 64-year-old as "extraordinary", and he did enjoy some success during his last spell at an English club, leading Chelsea to a Europa League triumph in 2019 and finishing third in the Premier League.

Known for utilising an attacking 4-3-3 system, there are indications the Napoli-born tactician would bring an exciting brand of football back to Tottenham, but he is not the manager they need at this moment in time.

At just 35-years-old, Nagelsmann is likely to be a more viable long-term option than Sarri, and he should remain the club's top target.
