NUFC can axe Gayle with David transfer

Following on from the recent January transfer window that saw Newcastle United spend a substantial amount of money and add a handful of new players to their squad, it seems as though rumours for the next summer transfer window have already begun.

According to a recent report from Tuttomercato, Newcastle are one of the clubs interested in making a summer move for Lille striker Jonathan David.

In 164 senior appearances for Lille and Gent combined, prior to the French club’s Champions League clash against Chelsea tonight, the 22-year-old has managed to rack up 66 goals and 20 assists along the way, showing that he certainly knows how to find the back of the net.

If Newcastle were able to secure the Canadian’s signature when the summer transfer window opens for business, this could give the Magpies the opportunity to get one of their current attacking players off their wage bill and out of the club.

Despite manager Eddie Howe claiming that he will have an important role at the club this season, Toon striker Dwight Gayle has only played eight minutes of Premier League action from two appearances since the Magpies appointed their new manager back in November.

Even though he has been described as a “weapon” in the past by Noel Whelan in terms of his attacking capabilities, it seems as though the 32-year-old has been surplus to requirements this season.

With that in mind, the upcoming summer transfer window could give Newcastle a great opportunity to finally get rid of Gayle and free up a space in their squad for someone like David, who has been described as a “phenomenon” by Hein Vanhaezebrouck, to come in and fight for a spot in the team.

Given how much younger the Lille star is than the current Magpies attacker and his clear knack for scoring goals, he could be a great investment from the Tyneside club, especially if he can be their long-term consistent goalscorer for the foreseeable future.

However, while Howe’s side are currently out of the relegation zone at the moment, they are not fully out of the woods yet in terms of securing their league safety for next season, which should be the club’s main focus before any transfer plans get put into place for the summer.

Mosquera ready to return to Wolves team

Yerson Mosquera could finally be ready to return the Wolves squad and provide competition to the likes of Romain Saiss and Willy Boly – who himself has just returned from injury, bolstering an already solid defence.

The West Midlands club have conceded the fourth-least goals in the league this season, but with Saiss turning 32 this month and Boly turning 31 last month, 20-year-old Mosquera could receive plenty of playing time alongside Max Kilman, with Conor Coady between the two, towards the end of this season to develop him further.

Having experienced pros all around him will only benefit him going forward, but it might not be long before he leaves them in his dust in the centre-back pecking order, with just Coady and Kilman nailed on starters right now – despite Saiss’ excellent form this season.

Mosquera, a centre-back who is “very fast” and has been described as a “wonderkid” by Carlos Aleman, a Colombian football expert to The Athletic, suffered an unfortunate ‘high-grade’ hamstring injury during their Carabao Cup defeat at home to Tottenham, and has only just started playing football again at youth team level.

On Monday, the Colombian, who was signed from Atletico Nacional for £4.6m, leapt highest to head home a Luke Cundle corner against Reading for the U23 team, in the same Premier League 2 match that promising forward Chem Campbell bagged a perfect hat-trick.

Wolves boss Bruno Lage spoke highly of him as he was stepping up his recovery from injury, saying: “We believe a lot in him. Even in pre-season, the fans and I knew we had the right player with us.

“We believe a lot in him. Even in pre-season, the fans and I knew we had the right player with us.

“After that injury, he came back and everything was good. We thought Tottenham could be a good challenge for him to start playing for us and he picked up another injury, so it was very hard.

“He has a big spirit. He’s always happy and the club is helping him to return stronger. We are now waiting for him, and when he comes [back], he comes without problems.”

When Mosquera does come back to the Wolves first team, what is for sure is that he will bring energy, pace and intensity to that wide centre back spot on the right-hand side of defence, slotting in well for whoever drops out should he get the opportunity to start.

Nelson Semedo could be out for longer

Wolverhampton Wanderers right-wing-back Nelson Semedo could face a longer spell on the sidelines than originally feared after the Portugal international picked up a hamstring injury in Wolves’ 2-1 defeat away at Arsenal last month.

What’s the story?

According to injury expert Ben Dinnery, the 28-year-old may be unavailable for selection until mid to late April as he continues rehabilitation.

Speaking to Football Insider, Dinnery said: “My understanding is that it will probably be slightly longer. It is extremely optimistic to expect a return to play within that month. I would expect that it’s more likely to be mid to late April, in all honesty.

“I presume that Bruno Lage was maybe hoping for a return after the international break. It might well have been a case of wishful thinking. But my understanding is that it will more likely be around the six to eight-week mark, so it’s a significant setback.”

Wolves will suffer as a result

With Wolves still within a good shout of finishing in a European place, manager Bruno Lage will be desperate to have every one of his players available, with Semedo’s absence a harsh blow.

The right-wing-back has played in 23 of the Wanderers’ 28 league matches this term and is a major asset for Lage’s squad.

Having joined from Barcelona in September 2020 for a fee believed to be around £37m, the Portuguese has been vital for Wolves, racking up 61 appearances already.

Lage’s side have been rightly applauded all season for their solidity at the back with the West Midlands outfit the top-flight’s fourth-best defenders, having conceded just 23 goals in 28 games. Semedo has proven to be a major contributor to that feat.

What makes the predicament even more frustrating is the fact that reserve right-wing-back Ki-Jana Hoever is also sidelined with a hamstring injury, meaning that left-sided wing-back Jonny Otto has to make do on the right.

Sat in eighth ahead of their trip to Everton this afternoon, Wolves can go seventh with a victory after Tottenham’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United yesterday. Moreover, if West Ham lose to Aston Villa and Lage’s side win at Goodison Park, the Portuguese manager will see his team break into the top-six.

Yet, a defeat in the continued absence of Semedo could see them continue to lose their grasp on European football; a dire consequence for everyone at Molineux.

There is still so much to play for as the Black Country club look to secure a European spot, however, with the trip to Everton the first of their final ten matches of the season.

Wolves still have to play the current top-three in Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, however, the trio are the only sides from the current top-eight Lage’s side still have to face, meaning that the remaining fixture run certainly favours the Golden Boys which could arguably make the Semedo blow softer.

Everton: Frank Lampard must axe Richarlison

Frank Lampard is facing arguably the biggest challenge of his managerial career thus far as he tries to steer Everton away from the Premier League relegation zone, with a number of financial and political issues going on in the background.

It’s not helping matters that two of his star players, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, are enduring a bad patch of form at a difficult, high-pressure stage of the season.

Richarlison is in a particular poor run, registering just two goals and one assist in all competitions since the start of 2022.

Despite averaging a solid 6.82 match rating across the season in the Premier League, the Brazilian has scored just four goals and created three more, working out at a scoring frequency of one every 365 minutes. That’s not good enough for a player worth £49.5m (as per Transfermarkt) who’s playing for a team fighting for their top-flight lives.

He can still be a hit with fans and critics, with journalist David Prentice once suggesting that the forward “makes things happen” for the Toffees.

Club and international team-mate Allan also heaped praise on him last month, saying: “He’s very hard-working and I try to pass on my experience as I get older to help and guide him. I’m sure he will have a great career here at Everton and for the Brazilian national team.”

However, Lampard’s patience with Richarlison must be running out after averaging a 6.45 Sofascore match rating in his last four Premier League games, failing to find the net and missing two big chances in total during that time.

In the Toffees’ last outing, a 5-0 humiliation at the hands of an inconsistent Tottenham, the 24-year-old completed just nine passes in 90 minutes, had zero shots on target, completed zero crosses and won just 43% of his duels.

Recently, there seems to be no fight in the Brazilian. By comparison, 21-year-old Anthony Gordon won 57% of his duels, completed two crosses, made four tackles and two key passes on Monday night despite ending up on the losing team.

Everton need more fight, particularly up top, and more players need to take it upon themselves to follow in Gordon’s lead and give everything they have for the team. While Richarlison is failing to do just that, it might be time for Lampard to make a statement and axe the 24-year-old from the starting line-up for the time being.

Newcastle tipped to sign Lloyd Kelly

A claim has been made over Newcastle United’s pursuit of England under-21 international Lloyd Kelly.

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Dean Jones has suggested that the Magpies could be in for the centre-back in the summer because of his history with Eddie Howe.

The Toon head coach signed the defender for Bournemouth from Bristol City for £13m during his time at the Vitality Stadium and has been linked with a swoop for him this year.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Obviously, Eddie Howe knows him very well, and it’s not just that. It’s the potential that he’s got, the level he’s already playing at.”

Imagine him & Burn

PIF must land a Newcastle deal for Kelly in the summer as he would form an exciting partnership with Dan Burn at St. James’ Park.

They would complement each other well as their contrasting styles would help them work in tandem in matches as a pairing.

Whilst Burn excels in his individual duels and likes to bully attackers, he lacks the pace to cover in behind and can be exposed when he gets turned and has to chase after a ball that goes past him – as shown in recent goals for Everton and Chelsea as Alex Iwobi and Kai Havertz broke into the space behind him to score.

He has made 3.1 tackles and interceptions whilst winning 3.0 aerial duels and 4.7 battles in total per game in the Premier League this season – as per SofaScore. This shows that he is a strong one-on-one defender as he is regularly winning 50/50’s to regain possession for his side to make up for his lack of mobility.

Kelly, meanwhile, has only won 1.1 aerial battles per game in the Championship at an underwhelming success rate of 47%. The 23-year-old is not outstanding in the air, like the former Brighton man, and can leave the bulk of those particular duels to Burn.

He does, however, have the turn of pace to cover the 30-year-old and ensure that his speed is not a major issue in games. Former Cherries boss Jonathan Woodgate previously heaped praise on the central defender’s physical attributes, saying:

“At the minute he just looks like a bit of a Rolls-Royce doesn’t he? He looked very, very good (against Bristol City).

“I was impressed to be honest with you, especially when (Antoine) Semenyo tried to run him down the line and Semenyo gave him two yards and Lloydy overtook him. It’s eye-catching when things like that happen, especially as a fellow defender. When you see things like that, it’s like ‘you’ve got a bit’.”

This suggests that he will be able to alleviate any problems caused by Burn’s mobility, or lack thereof, and that is why they would be a perfect pairing at Newcastle next season and PIF must seal a deal for Kelly in the summer.

NUFC in pole position for Botman transfer

Newcastle United’s owners showed in the previous January transfer window just how capable they are of being active in the market and spending money on bringing new players to the Tyneside club.

With the upcoming summer transfer window on the horizon, it seems as though a big twist has emerged over one potential deal that could take place for Newcastle once the current season ends.

What’s the latest?

According to a recent report from Football Insider, the Magpies are in pole position to sign defender Sven Botman from Lille for around £30m this summer even though he has apparently already agreed personal terms with AC Milan.

The Toon were linked with a move for the centre-back during the previous winter transfer window but couldn’t get a deal over the line.

Since joining the French club back in the 2020 summer transfer window from Ajax’s U21 side, the 22-year-old has made 75 appearances for Lille across all competitions, chipping in with three goals and two assists.

With an average of 4.5 clearances per game in Ligue 1 this season, more than any other Lille player, the Dutchman could be a big asset for the Toon and strengthen their back line.

Labelled as a “golden boy” by Francesco Miniero, the director of Botman’s agency in Italy, the defender would certainly be a special deal for PIF to pull off, who will surely be happy at being at the front of the line to sign the youngster.

Even though Eddie Howe’s side haven’t conceded more than one goal in any of their 12 previous games across all competitions, adding the Lille star, who is currently valued at £27m according to Transfermarkt, to their ranks would definitely make the team stronger at the back, even after they already added some depth to it in January with the arrivals of Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett.

Moving forward, if Newcastle were able to snatch Botman out of Milan’s hands and finally get their target after missing out on him in January, this would certainly please a lot of Toon fans and further increase the reputation of the club’s owners and their ruthlessness in the transfer market.

Erik ten Hag happy to be Man United boss

Of recent, Manchester United are known to take an age when pondering important decisions.

Though, with Ralf Rangnick’s interim managerial contract expiring in late June, the Red Devils have a chance to act fast and appoint a manager who could oversee their summer rebuild.

What’s the word?

For those who want to see 52-year-old ten Hag takeover the United helm next season, the latest reports will be very much welcomed.

According to Fabrizio Romano, who spoke on his YouTube channel:

“He would be super happy to be the new Manchester United manager. The feeling was positive even on Erik ten Hag’s side during the meeting with Man United.

“He wanted to know budget, potential signings and how they would back him in the market. This is a key point.”

Fabrizio also addressed the logistics behind the potential deal.

“A key point, on compensation, from what I’m told on Man United’s side they don’t see a problem for compensation. They are ready to pay what is right to Ajax.

“The conversation between the club has always been good. The relationship is fantastic due to Edwin van der Sar.”

Great news for Man United

The latest reports from super-journalist Fabrizio Romano will please the alleged 87.9% of United fans who want ten Hag to take over as manager next season.

Although it is worth noting that whilst these discussions between Erik and the Old Trafford side are positive, nothing is guaranteed until the agreements have been made and the contract has been signed.

Though, the discussion of details in this depth does mean that talks are moving in the right direction, with ten Hag showing his eagerness and commitment to the cause by wanting to understand more on the intricacies around how the club is run and the type of resources that he will be equipped with.

As Romano points out here, the relationship between Manchester United and Ajax is strong.

With their shared link with van der Sar, who is the CEO of the Amsterdam outfit, the Red Devils are in the best decision to appoint the Dutchman who worked with Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils should act as fast as possible with ten Hag, who can then begin the rebuild process at the club.

All in all, the news that compensation won’t be a problem is particularly good news for the club. They appear to be a step further towards appointing him which given his winning mentality, securing several major honours in his homeland, he’d be a wise hire.

Journalist urges Celtic to sign player

Celtic simply must seal the permanent signing of centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers this summer, according to journalist Stephen McGowan.

The Lowdown: Carter-Vickers superb on Sunday

The Hoops picked up arguably their biggest win of the season so far on Sunday afternoon, clinching a 2-1 victory away to their bitter Glasgow arch-rivals.

It was Carter-Vickers who scored the winning goal at Ibrox and his all-round performance was sensational as he ensured that Celtic held on for victory during a tense second half.

As per Sofascore, the 24-year-old made a hugely impressive eight clearances during the game, also winning eight out of 10 duels and making three interceptions as he posted a man-of-the-match rating of 7.7.

The Latest: McGowan urges Celtic to stump up for Carter-Vickers

Taking to Twitter after the match, McGowan urged Celtic to make Carter-Vickers’ loan move permanent in the summer following the American’s tremendous display against Rangers.

The Scottish Daily Mail’s Chief Football Writer gushed: “Irrespective of whether Celtic get that Champions League money they should pay whatever it takes for Cameron Carter-Vickers.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-23/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: No-brainer for Hoops

It makes complete sense for Ange Postecoglou to bring in Carter-Vickers permanently, with the 24-year-old’s performances for Celtic catching the eye throughout the season.

He has made 27 Premiership starts and won 4.3 aerial duels per game, and there are real signs that he is forging a dominant partnership with Carl Starfelt at the back. As per WhoScored, they both rank in the top five players this season currently in Postecoglou’s squad.

Also, at 24, he is at an ideal age in terms of his peak years most likely still being ahead of him.

The eight-cap USA international’s current deal at Tottenham expires in 2023 and they may be keen to receive a fee for him while they still can this summer. That could play into Celtic’s hands if there is both a willing seller and an enthusiastic buyer.

Celtic can sell “maligned” Parkhead flop by unleashing Donovan in new role

Celtic left it late against Aberdeen to seal Wilfried Nancy’s first win in charge of the club, as Kieran Tierney and James Forrest grabbed last-gasp goals.

The Hoops were drawing 1-1 with the Dons with 15 minutes to play, on course for a fifth straight game without a win, before Tierney popped up in the 88th minute to put them 2-1 up.

The moment that changed the game was created by substitute Colby Donovan, whose brilliant cross found the former Arsenal man at the back post to score.

Why Wilfried Nancy must finally unleash Colby Donovan

Nancy’s new 3-4-2-1 system has slowed down the academy graduate’s progress at Parkhead, because he has not started any of the manager’s games in charge yet.

This fresh formation means that there is no right-back position, which is where Donovan typically plays, in the side. Instead, there is a right-sided centre-back role and a right wing-back role.

Donovan should finally be unleashed as a starter by Nancy in a new role for him as a wing-back, because he has the attacking qualities to potentially be an effective player in that position.

The 19-year-old starlet has provided three assists in 12 appearances in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League combined this season, per Sofascore, including the one for Liam Scales against Sturm Graz in the clip above.

Donovan provided another reminder of the quality that he can offer at the top end of the pitch with his sublime ball into the box for Celtic’s second goal against Aberdeen, and that is why he should start in that new role against Livingston this afternoon.

If Nancy unleashes the teenage talent as a starter in that position, there could be an opportunity for another player in the squad to be sold next month.

The Celtic flop who should be sold in January

Since the new manager came through the door to play a new formation at Parkhead, Hyun-jun Yang has been playing as a wing-back for the Scottish giants.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The South Korean attacker has started four of the manager’s five matches in all competitions, starting every game other than the League Cup final against St Mirren, but he has not offered much in the way of quality in the final third.

Since signing in 2023, the 23-year-old winger has only scored nine goals and provided ten assists in 63 appearances for Celtic in all competitions to date, per Transfermarkt, which shows that he has not offered a consistent threat in front of goal.

Journalist Graham Spiers noted that Yang is an “often-maligned” player, possibly because of his lack of goal contributions, but hailed some of the work that he did for Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill.

His last two starts, against Dundee United and Aberdeen, show the best and the worst of the forward, explaining both why he may be underrated, yet also why the Hoops should cash in on him.

Unfortunately, lacking quality in the final third has been the theme of the South Korean’s overall career at Parkhead, as evidenced by his aforementioned output for the club to date.

Yang has produced two goals and no assists in 19 appearances in all competitions this season, per Sofascore, which means that he has even fewer goal contributions than Donovan, who has recorded three assists.

This suggests that the Scottish full-back may carry an even greater threat at the top end of the pitch than the South Korean flop as a wing-back, which is why Nancy should make this change to the starting XI.

Celtic have reportedly opened talks to sign a star in a deal that could spell bad news for Liam Scales.

Replacing Yang with Donovan would then allow the club to finally cash in on the winger, who would then not be a starting-calibre player, amid reported interest from Birmingham, Norwich, and Preston.

Hicks: Money available for Benitez

Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks has promised manager Rafael Benitez transfer funds this summer despite the uncertainty at boardroom level.

Hicks and fellow American George Gillett put the Reds up for sale last month following three years in charge at Anfield.

The American duo have been criticised by fans for a buyout which placed a huge burden of debt on the club, while the failure to begin work on a proposed new stadium left many supporters calling for their heads.

On the pitch it hasn't been much better after last season's seventh-placed finish in the Premier League left the Reds facing up to prospect of no lucrative place in next year's Champions League.

However, Hicks insists that Benitez will have money to spend this summer and has rejected suggestions that star players Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard could be sold to boost the empty Anfield coffers.

"We have no intention of selling any of our top players and we have a substantial transfer budget in place," said Hicks.

"There's so much misinformation about transfer spending. It's more than doubled under the ownership of George and myself from the previous three years and we will make a significant investment this summer. It's really about getting the right players."

Meanwhile, Hicks has hit out at suggestions that he and Gillett have taken the club backwards during their time on Merseyside.

"There's been so much misinformation put out by people who have their own agendas and it's unfortunate," he told Sky Sports News.
