Red Dragons star remains a prolific presenceCan be relied upon to deliver on the fieldFaces as many challenges off the pitchWHAT HAPPENED?

The prolific Wrexham striker has forged quite the reputation for himself in recent times, with a 47-goal haul last season helping to fire the Red Dragons to promotion back into the Football League. Mullin is a firm fan favourite in North Wales – with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney among his many admirers – but the 29-year-old is eager to point out that events and challenges away from the pitch will always be his top priority.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT MULLIN SAID

Mullin, whose famous ‘A’ hand signal goal celebration offers a nod towards his young son, has said in his new autobiography : “People say going to an autism discussion group will help me, but I’m not arsed about me. The last person I’m arsed about in this whole situation is me. I genuinely couldn’t give a f*ck about me. I care about Albi. I spend every minute thinking about how I can help him overcome barriers that he, as a child, can’t foresee. As soon as I work out he can jump one, in my head the next one appears. Sometimes the worry hits me like a cannonball. I sit on the couch and cry. Or I’ll watch him when he’s asleep and feel wave after wave of emotion. I don’t know why, because I don’t care that he’s autistic.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mullin added: “What I am, though, is scared. For him, not me. Not knowing how it affects him is what I hate. Does it affect him? Does it not? Does he care? Does he not? I’m constantly trying to get inside his head and sometimes I just hit the wall. It’s as if my own head has split open and a flood of emotion has come pouring out. If one week he isn’t as vocal as the one before, I’ll feel a massive weight of guilt – it’s my fault. Those emotional episodes are necessary in a way, because when I wake up the next day I feel ready to go again. The other side of me is back – I’m on the train again. My focus is there, and it’s a positive focus. ‘You’re being stupid,’ I tell myself. ‘You spend so much time with him that you do know how he works. You know what’s inside his head.’”

Mullin has earned plenty of plaudits for the work that he continues to do regarding autism awareness, with funds being raised for several charities. He can always be relied upon to give his all professionally, with the 29-year-old as ambitious as any other player, but there will always be more important things for him to worry about than where his next goal is coming from.

Chelsea's unlikely Saudi saviours: Pro League spending set to rescue Todd Boehly's bloated Blues from growing financial concerns

The sales of Kalidou Koulibaly, Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy are set to breathe life into the Blues' clear-out – but is there trouble ahead?

After some questionable transfer decisions, Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali are being bailed out of trouble amid a precarious financial situation, courtesy of interest in a host of expendable players from Saudi Arabia. However, the Blues must tread carefully, as their transfer dealings could mean they risk being thrust into hot water again.

A spending spree sparked by the Saudi Public Investment Fund's (PIF) takeover of four of the kingdom's leading clubs earlier in June – Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli – has caused a serious stir across the world of football. The fund has acquired a 75 percent stake in each of those sides and has immediately set about targeting elite-level players for their assets.

Karim Benzema's move to Al-Ittihad has been the marquee signing of the summer so far following Al-Nassr's groundbreaking capture of Cristiano Ronaldo at the end of 2022, but the Saudi focus has shifted onto as many as SIX Chelsea players who have been deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge, and another whose contract is up.

But how could this fire sale help Chelsea, and what are the possible ramifications?

instagram / @fabrizioromWho's going where?

Kalidou Koulibaly has already ended his ill-fated one-season spell at Stamford Bridge by joining Al-Hilal for £21.5 million ($27m), while three more players who Chelsea were desperate to shift this summer are all seemingly destined for lucrative moves to the Middle East; Hakim Ziyech is expected to join Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is in advanced talks with Al-Ahli and a Saudi offer is anticipated for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Elsewhere, returning loanees Romelu Lukaku and Callum Hudson-Odoi have both been linked with moves to the Gulf, although the former has rejected the idea of joining Al-Hilal as he wants to return to Inter.

Meanwhile, N'Golo Kante – a player Chelsea were more open to keeping – has agreed a free transfer to join his compatriot Benzema at Al-Ittihad, with his contract due to expire at the end of June.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesChelsea's FFP and budget boost

Chelsea are desperate to balance the books after posting huge losses in the two previous seasons and splurging an eye-watering £600m ($763m) on new players in 2022-23 – all of which leaves them in danger of failing to stay within the Premier League's three-year limit on losses of £105m ($133.6m) or more.

The Blues were added to UEFA's Financial Fair Play (FFP) watchlist in September 2022, with European football's governing body keeping a close eye on their activity in the months since. Consequently, their January spree will likely have raised some eyebrows.

Player sales are the only real exit strategy for the mess the club finds itself in, and therefore interest from free-spending Saudi clubs in so many of their stars will come as a serious relief.

If they want to include any more sales in their accounts for 2022-23 to offset their spending, they will need to have them signed off by June 30. They only sold the likes of Timo Werner, Emerson Palmieri, Jorginho and Billy Gilmour within that period for less than £60m ($76m) in total. Although Koulibaly's switch has already been confirmed, it remains to be seen whether that can be added to the total as the Saudi transfer window doesn't open until July 1.

The potential exodus to the Middle East also provides a boost in terms of potential incomings, as Chelsea need to raise funds for further spending, although any deals are expected to be more targeted this summer.

Getty ImagesBoehly bailed out

Chelsea co-owner Boehly in particular will be breathing a sigh of relief. It was he who sanctioned ill-advised deals for Koulibaly and Aubameyang last summer, during his ill-fated spell as self-appointed sporting director. Both were among the club's biggest transfer failures in 2022-23, and the club will have been desperate to shift them in this window.

Despite taking a loss of around £10m ($12.8m), recouping £21.5 million ($27m) for Koulibaly after an underwhelming single season in English football will be seen as a relative success, and Chelsea will also expect to come close to clawing back the £10.3m ($13.1m) they paid Barcelona for Aubameyang when an offer eventually arrives from one of the PIF-backed clubs.

GettyReports of PIF investment

Although unconfirmed, it has been reported that PIF previously invested in Clearlake Capital, who are 60% majority shareholders of Chelsea, with billions of pounds worth of their assets allegedly managed by the investment firm. It has also been claimed that PIF has collaborated with one of Boehly's firms to invest in a hotel chain.

However, the west London club has denied any existing financial interest in the club from the Saudi fund, and claim that any interest in their players is purely transactional and comes as a result of Chelsea's popularity in the Middle East, per . Any alleged investment from PIF was also supposedly scrutinised in great detail by the Premier League in its ownership tests last year.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was at his match-altering best once again as he inspired a dramatic late comeback from Inter Miami that forced a thrilling cup clash into extra-time. He then helped his side to prevail on penalties and remain on course for another shot at silverware following their recent Leagues Cup triumph.

Despite finding himself on the wrong end of another Messi masterclass, USMNT star Vazquez was happy to take advantage of an unexpected opportunity to rub shoulders with the all-time great. The Cincinnati forward did not even wait until heading down the tunnel before cornering Messi and asking him to sign what will become a prized memento.

AND WHAT'S MORE

Messi was not among the goals in Inter Miami’s remarkable 3-3 draw with FC Cincinnati, but he did provide two assists – including one deep into second-half stoppage-time – before successfully converting from the spot in a dramatic shootout.

Dest was sent off in the first half of the 2-1 defeat, leaving his team with it all to do after an inexcusable red card. The defender was having a solid game at the time of his dismissal, having already assisted Antonee Robinson's opener. The Barcelona fullback was shown a red card with his team up a goal from that opener and, more importantly, up 4-0 on aggregate. Dest appeared frustrated with a decision and, after a stoppage in play, hoofed the ball into the stands. After being given a yellow card, he continued to yell at the referee, blowing kisses at the official before being sent off.

Dest's teammates were noticeably angry at the defender, with Tim Ream and Matt Turner both seen yelling at him after his dismissal. Dest's exit left the U.S. with plenty of hard running to do and, just moments after, they conceded a goal to make it 1-1. After the match, Gregg Berhalter and Ream blasted the defender for his behavior, although the coach said that the team will welcome Dest back after he apologized for his mistake.

WHAT DEST SAID

"I want to apologize to my Teammates, Staff, Fans and whole nation for my behaviour," Dest wrote on Instagram. "It was unacceptable, Selfish and immature I let my team down! It’s something I have to learn from and it won’t happen again!"

Who is the next Mbappe? Ligue 1’s young stars to watch out for in 2018-19

France's conveyor belt of young talent paid off in the summer as Les Bleus lifted the World Cup – but who are the stars of the future?

Getty1Timothy Weah (PSG)

It’s not easy making a breakthrough as a young player into one of the world’s biggest clubs, but Timothy Weah, son of former Ballon d’Or winner George, is threatening to do just that. He turned out three times for PSG last season, playing 122 minutes in total, and in the Trophee des Champions clash with Monaco last week he notched his first senior goal and played the full 90 minutes. The USA international, just 18, is beginning to justify the hype.

AdvertisementGetty2Martin Terrier (Lyon)

Perhaps no one has caught the eye in pre-season quite as much as Lyon attacker Martin Terrier. OL swooped to sign the 21-year-old from Strasbourg last January before loaning him immediately back to the club to finish the campaign. He impressed with Racing, scoring three times and creating four more in Ligue 1 but suffered from injuries in the second half of the season. He appears to have hit the ground running at Parc OL and should supplement the likes of Nabil Fekir, Mariano Diaz and Memphis Depay nicely.

Getty Images3Oumar Solet (Lyon)

Centre-back has been a problem position for Lyon for several seasons now and they are hopeful that 18-year-old Oumar Solet can one day grow into the player to finally act as a solution. Signed from third-tier Laval in the summer for little more than €500,000, he could prove one of the bargains of the summer. Bruno Genesio has already given him game time in pre-season, where he looked comfortable against Inter in a 1-0 friendly defeat.

It’s not certain that 19-year-old Stanley N’Soki (pictured left) will still be at Paris Saint-Germain when the season begins, as the likes of Arsenal, Marseille and especially Newcastle hover. He is not yet tied down to a professional deal, but one imagines that after his impressive display against Monaco in the Trophee des Champions it has to be a top priority. He impressed down the left for the Ligue 1 champions on his full senior bow, even lending an assist, yet his more natural position is centre-back.

Rooney claimed that he considers Lionel Messi to be less selfish than Ronaldo as he stated that his former Manchester United colleague only thinks about goals while the Argentine gives more effort on the pitch and tries to create chances.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT WAYNE ROONEY SAID

Former Chelsea winger Eden Hazard recently claimed that he considers himself to be a better 'pure footballer' than the Al-Nassr star. Now Rooney has supported the Belgian's statement while speaking to YouTubers Lyes Bouzidi and CultureCams.

The former England striker said: "So for instance, Cristiano Ronaldo, his mindset is goals. He doesn’t care about anything else, it’s goals, that’s all he wants. Whereas you look at Messi, he wants to play a bit more.

"I suppose that’s what Hazard is saying, he liked to play – exactly like myself. I saw something that Gary Neville said recently, that Alex Ferguson always used to have a go at me for coming too deep, but it was because I wanted to play football. And I could have been a bit more selfish and stayed up top, and maybe scored a few more goals, but I wanted to play. I wanted to enjoy the game and I imagine that’s what Hazard means."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Portugal captain had attacked his former colleagues Rooney and Neville in an interview with Piers Morgan in 2022. Ronaldo went on to claim that he no longer considers the duo as his friends after they criticised him towards the end of his second stint with the Red Devils.

Kane came the closest for the Bavarians in the first half, seeing a free header denied by an acrobatic stop. He didn't miss in the second half, creating space inside the box before lashing a left-footed effort into the bottom corner. But Leipzig battled their way back, Sesko bagging the equaliser with 20 minutes to play. Kane had the last laugh, though, guiding home a fine finish in second half stoppage time.

AdvertisementGettyTHE MVP

It hasn't been an easy few weeks for Kane. The English striker was toothless against first Leverkusen, then Lazio, going missing in the Bavarians' biggest games of the season. And although he scored in a losing effort against Bochum last week, he failed to convince. On Saturday, he turned in a far more convincing performance. He was unlucky not to open the scoring after five minutes, and took first his goal well when the moment came. The second was even better – a fine left footed finish. A welcome return to form.

GettyTHE BIG LOSER

It's on nights like these that big players need to show up. And Leipzig's Lois Openda simply didn't. The pacey forward has been excellent in the Bundesliga this season, scoring 16 goals and adding four assists. But he was almost anonymous here. He managed just 27 touches – only four of which came in the Bayern box – and didn't put a shot on goal. In the end, Leipzig were perhaps unlucky that the opposition had a truly elite striker leading their line. But they could have done with a better contribution from their own centre-forward in this one.

Bayern will face a scrap to stay in the Bundesliga title race – as current leaders Bayer Leverkusen keep winning. Thomas Tuchel's side continue that effort with a clash with Freiburg on Friday, before turning their attention to the second leg of their Champions League last 16 clash with Lazio.

What is wrong at Chelsea?! Winners, losers and ratings as Blues falter against Southampton

Chelsea lost 2-1 against Southampton on Tuesday, and there were plenty of culprits.

If Thomas Tuchel wasn't concerned before, Tuesday night's performance will provide plenty of reasons to worry as the Blues continued a lacklustre start to the Premier League season.

Chelsea were deservedly beaten 2-1 by Southampton as goals from Romeo Lavia and Adam Armstrong cancelled out an opener from Raheem Sterling. The loss is Chelsea's second in three games, having previously been blasted 3-0 by Leeds before a narrow 2-1 win against Leicester.

The Blues looked a step off the pace, with Southampton trampling an overrun Chelsea midfield trio. The absences of Reece James, N'Golo Kante and any sort of No. 9 were felt on a night to forget for Tuchel and his players.

With the loss, Chelsea now have just seven points through five games and are in danger of falling out of the title race.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Raheem Sterling:

Sterling was wasteful at times particularly in the first half. The winger squandered several chances, one of which fell apart due to his own selfishness.

But he should get credit for creating those opportunities, and he did put one first-half shot into the net.

Sterling scored Chelsea's lone goal, a scrappy finish to cap off what was a beautiful move leading up to it. Mason Mount's ball across goal was pushed out to Sterling, who took advantage of a slow-to-react defence to turn and fire.

The former Manchester City winger was the only Chelsea player whoo was truly threatening, and the only attacker who seemed to be matching the pace of the game.

Romeo Lavia:

What a moment for the former Manchester City youngster!

Lavia hit an absolute missile to level the score, digging Southampton out of a hole soon after Sterling had taken the lead.

Lavia became the first player born in 2004 to score in the Premier League – not bad for the teenager, who has hit the ground running at Southampton to start the season.

Manchester City essentially have to let players like Lavia go sometimes, as minutes are hard to come by for youngsters in Pep Guardiola's machine. But they'll certainly be keeping a close eye on the midfielder as he continues to prove he's more than ready for England's top-flight.

The transfer market:

Deadline day is nearly here, and Chelsea look like a team that will need some help.

As they faltered in Southampton, reported target Anthony Gordon starred in Leeds, scoring a lovely goal for Everton as rumours swirl. The young winger would be an expensive buy for the Blues, who, despite their attacking talent, have really struggled to convert in front of net.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been linked for similar reasons, while Wesley Fofana and Josko Gvardiol could come in to provide more options at centre-back.

It remains to be seen if any of these players come in before the window shuts, or how much they'll cost if Chelsea do pull the trigger. But, so far this season, the Blues have looked like a team that will need to do a bit of business if they hope to compete at the top of the table.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Cesar Azpilicueta:

Prior to the match, with both teams waiting to march onto the field, Azpilicueta was mocked by a young Southampton mascot. It was a light moment that broke the tension pre-match, and it also proved to be the only bit of fun on the day for the Spanish defender.

Azpilicueta looked his age in this one. The 33-year-old defender struggled on the right-hand side, where he started in place of Reece James, who was out sick.

He conceded the corner that led to Southampton's first goal, and then mis-hit his clearance right to Lavia for the youngster's fine finish. In general, Azpilicueta struggled with the pace of the game as James' presence was sorely missed.

The England star is irreplaceable these days as questions remain about Azpilicueta's ability to truly back him up as a pure right-back.

Jorginho/Loftus-Cheek pairing:

For years, Tuchel's preferred formation has included three centre-backs, and nights like this show why.

Chelsea simply don't have the personnel to play in a four-at-the-back system right now, as the midfield left the backline exposed too often.

Jorginho struggled defensively and cannot play as a pure No. 6 without some sort of cover. Loftus-Cheek had a promising start, but was then far too predictable on the ball after the first few minutes, proving a detriment as the game wore on. And Mount did well enough, but obviously doesn't offer as much of a defensive presence.

Do Chelsea need a stronger presence like Declan Rice? Quite possibly. Would a healthy N'Golo Kante mask these sorts of problems? Maybe. Are they better suited for a three-at-the-back system? Most definitely.

It was a night to forget for the Blues' midfield.

Christian Pulisic:

The American was benched for the fifth consecutive game as transfer rumors continue to swirl.

Recent reports say that Pulisic will not leave Stamford Bridge, despite links to a loan move to Manchester United. He will instead be asked to fight for his place with Tuchel unwilling to let him go.

All of that, then, for him to just be thrown into the game out of position after the team's initial setup didn't work.

Pulisic is not a wing-back, and while it is nice for him to get onto the field, minutes in that part of the pitch don't help anyone. After coming on in the second half, Pulisic struggled, turning the ball over twice early and never really making much of an impact from where he was on the field.

It doesn't look like he'll leave, and that will likely be frustrating for a player who can't seem to ever get onto the field in his preferred position.

Getty ImagesChelsea Ratings: Defence

Edouard Mendy (6/10):

Was unhappy to concede after getting a hand to Lavia's rocket of a shot, but there was nothing he could do on the second.

Marc Cucurella (5/10):

Relatively quiet night as he never really got involved.

Kalidou Koulibaly (5/10):

Returning to the line-up, Koulibaly has just seemed off since coming to London as he misplaced several passes.

Despite still being at the top of her game, Ertz – who is married to NFL star Zach of the Arizona Cardinals – has decided that she wants to spend more time with her family. She bowed out at club level with NWSL side Angel City FC in August, having suffered a surprise last-16 exit at the 2023 Women’s World Cup with the United States national team.

She hinted after a shock defeat to Sweden that she was done, but has agreed to take in one more outing for the USWNT against South Africa on Thursday. Ertz has said of calling it a day, with the next Olympic Games in Paris only 10 months away: “There's always the next opportunity, and your whole career as an athlete, you're like, ‘I don't want to regret anything’. And I think when I get to a point to be able to choose myself, when I could step away… I do feel I could step away and be like, 'It's not because Momma can't play. Momma can play. She has just adapted [her] priorities.' And I think that just comes with age and just I feel like I've been so blessed to have the career that I've had. I think time with my family is just irreplaceable, especially with just where [son] Madden is and his age.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ertz savoured World Cup glory with the U.S. in 2015 when operating as a centre-half, before then moving up into a midfield holding role to help defend that crown four years later. She has been a model of consistency for the States and returned to action in 2023 just eight months after giving birth to son Madden.

Ertz was unable to complete a hat-trick of World Cup wins in Australia and New Zealand and added on what needs to happen in order for the USWNT to restore global dominance: “It's really about how you learn from this. And I know that there was obviously plenty [of] first-timers at the World Cup, and I'm excited to see their comeback. The way to get back on top is you've got to win. So that's a bunch of things. I feel like it's so obvious. I could sit here and be like, well, this and that. At the end of the day, you have to score goals, you have to get them back in the net and you can't make excuses.”

THAT is why both Liverpool and Chelsea want Moises Caicedo! Winners and losers from a chaotic draw at Stamford Bridge

Both backlines were badly exposed in an incredibly open game at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon

Well, who saw that coming?! Pretty much everyone, truth be told! Chelsea's Premier League clash with Liverpool on the first Sunday of the new Premier League season proved just as entertaining an encounter as we all anticipated, with two imbalanced sides playing out an absorbing 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

The first half was particularly chaotic, with the visitors taking a deserved lead after Luis Diaz got on the end of a sublime through-ball from Mohamed Salah, before Chelsea levelled matters when debutant Axel Disasi bundled the ball home after Ben Chilwell had nodded a clearance back into the Liverpool box.

Chilwell then looked to have edged the hosts ahead when he slotted home after rounding Alisson but VAR intervened – just as it had when Salah had 'scored' earlier in the half – because the Englishman was marginally offside.

More goals appeared inevitable at that point but despite both sides' best efforts, Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino were forced to settle for a point apiece.

Below, GOAL runs through all of the winners and losers from west London…

WINNER: Axel Disasi

Wesley Fofana's latest injury setback was obviously a disaster for both the defender and his employers, who had spent big to sign him from Leicester last year. However, in Axel Disasi they look to have found an excellent replacement. Indeed, the former Monaco man's debut couldn't have gone much better.

Disasi, remember, hadn't played a minute of pre-season football, so he was coming in completely cold here – and yet he acquitted himself wonderfully. The goal was obviously the icing on the cake – you could just see how much it meant to him, and the way in which he ghosted in behind Liverpool's centre-backs while at the same time keeping himself onside was seriously impressive.

However, Pochettino will have been even more pleased with Disasi's disciplined defending after a nervy opening quarter for the Blues backline, as well as his excellent distribution of the ball.

The 25-year-old could well become a very popular figure at the Bridge.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: Mohamed Salah

Let's make one thing clear straight away: Salah's assist for Diaz's goal was absolutely outstanding and he deserves the utmost respect for both his vision and his precision. The Egyptian also repeatedly threatened during the first half, and he was unlucky to have been caught ever-so-slightly offside after latching onto an excellent pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold before coolly placing the ball past Roberto Sanchez.

However, Salah's finishing was actually pretty poor, and contributed to Liverpool failing to make the most of their blistering start. He hit the bar with one fine effort but only after a poor touch had left him in a poorer position to score. The winger also wasted two other excellent openings, much to the irritation of his fellow forwards.

But Salah ended up looking like the picture of frustration himself, after being replaced with just under 15 minutes to go. That was understandable to a degree, as he is always capable of conjuring up a bit of magic out of nothing but, truth be told, his influence on the game had long since faded and his withdrawal was wholly justified.

So, he let himself down with his petulant reaction to being taken off, which arguably illustrated why Klopp decided against picking Salah to replace Jordan Henderson as the club's new captain…

GettyWINNER: Chelsea's wing-backs

Chelsea's backline had their problems during the opening period of the game, which was inevitable given they were getting to grips with the demands of a new manager. However, the longer the first half wore on, the more influential their wing-backs became.

Reece James may have been caught napping by Luis Diaz for the game's opening goal but once he began working in tandem with a reinvigorated Raheem Sterling, he began tormenting Andy Robertson, who was left badly exposed at left-back due to the deployment of Cody Gakpo, a forward, in the Liverpool midfield.

On the other side, Ben Chilwell was also a threat every time he went forward and was unlucky not to get himself a goal as well as an assist.

Chelsea are quite clearly a work in progress – which is wholly unsurprising given the turnover of players at Stamford Bridge – but in James and Chilwell, they have two wing-backs that should cause opponents all sorts of problems this season.

GettyLOSER: Nicolas Jackson

Nicolas Jackson impressed in pre-season for Chelsea and did a lot right on his Premier League debut, asking questions of the Liverpool defence with his pace and direct running. On this evidence, he should make for a productive attacking outlet for Chelsea. At the very least, he offers a reference point that was conspicuous by its absence last season.

However, when chances came his way on Sunday, they went begging and that is the one nagging doubt over Jackson. He is not a proven prolific goalscorer and most of the 13 strikes he managed at Villarreal last season came during a purple patch right at the end of the campaign.

It remains to be seen, then, if the 22-year-old is really the answer to Chelsea's problems up front.
